New Poker Tournament, Find the Mickey Ornaments, Candy Cane Lane, More

Happy Thanksgiving! A last minute reminder that both Katie's and CV Steak have traditional Thanksgiving Dinner Specials plus their regular menu items Thursday. Last we checked, CV Steak was "full" but you might check with them at 775-783-6650 for any last minute openings due to cancellations.  If you are one of the many folks who ordered our Thanksgiving Turkey to go, we appreciate your business! We hope to have information in next week's blog about our Christmas Dinner to Go program which will include your choice of Turkey, Ham or Prime Rib with all the trimmings. We'll do the cooking, you heat and serve at home and enjoy the holiday!

No Limit Hold 'em Poker for those without a Zillion Dollars:  The crew in our Poker Room has done it again – they've come up with yet another fun way for people to enjoy live poker. This one is a daytime no-limit game that gives you the thrill of pushing your entire stack of chips to the center and saying "I'm all in" without having Mr. Moneybags to your left scoff at your meager bankroll. This special no limit game starts at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and the buy-in is $20-$100. This is a "table stakes" game so no worries about Mr. Moneybags digging in to his wad of hundreds to take you out.  This special game joins the other poker room additions we mentioned in our blog on November 5 (scroll down, it's there).  We don't know if it's the free draft beer, high octane coffee, or the occasional plateful of sweets, but the staff and regulars in the CVI Poker Room sure are a friendly, jovial, and welcoming bunch!

It's All About Christmas!
  • Christmas Lights For Kids of All Ages:   Our visual and musical salute to the festive holiday season, Candy Cane Lane, will be powered up for your enjoyment starting Sunday and continuing nightly through December. Thousands of Christmas lights surround  a variety of scenes depicting traditional characters and images getting ready for and enjoying Christmas. To experience Candy Cane Lane, pull into the Carson Valley Inn parking lot at the RV Entrance – between the Carson Valley Market and the Inn's electronic sign . . .the lighted arch marks the way. Tune your car radio to 89.9 FM and enjoy the music as you do a slow drive-by to soak in the sites and get into the Christmas spirit!
  • More Christmas Inside the CVI: as the Thanksgiving weekend unfolds, the rest of our Christmas  Decorations  will be sprouting up in our  restaurants, hallways and casino.  And that takes us to something we mentioned in last week's Blog . . .
  • $100 Dining Certificate for CV Steak: There are a handful - say a half-a-dozen - of "Hidden Mickey's (Mickey Mouse shaped Christmas ornaments) sprinkled here and there inside the CVI. Look around for them and click here to send us an email letting us know where you noticed these Mickey Mouse ornaments. For each location you find during the contest, you will be entered once into a drawing on December 23 for a $100 dining certificate for CV Steak!  You don't need to slide down any chimneys to find these special decorations . . . All are in plain sight!
  • Holiday Giveaways Ramp Up in December:  the dollar amounts associated with our Friday and Saturday night Holiday Giveaway drawings ramp up in December. For a peek at what's going on, Click Here.
  • Our Christmas Kickoff Weekend Hotel Package is a great 3-night deal on December 4 – 6 and it's not too late to make reservations now . . . a most affordable way to enjoy the many Christmas Spirit Inducing Events near the Carson Valley Inn!
  • Food Drive Almost Here: Please start gathering your food donations for the annual KTVN Channel 2 Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive on Friday, December 12 at the RV Park entrance from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Toys! A Toys for Tots donation box is near our Hotel Desk.
"Sandwich Wars" starts December 1 – another local eatery ”best of”  search contest run by our friends at www.carsonvalleytimes.com After CV Steak's Gourmet Hamburger (aka The French Disaster) made it to the finals in the Burger Wars, we had to sit out Pizza Wars . . . but the word from Publisher/Editor Joey Crandall is that a few of our Katie's Sandwiches will be on the starting block in the nomination round for Sandwich Wars. We'll have more on this in next Wednesday's CVI Blog.

  • Jackpot Update: The Penny Progressive Jackpot was over $48,000 last we looked on Tuesday afternoon and the Pro PK'em Progressive is $9 shy of $4,000 for this weekend's NFL games. Someone came one game short of winning the Pro PK'em Progressive this past weekend . . . brings up some thoughts we'll share in next week's blog.
  • This Week's Game-On Fridays special in CV Steak is another on our "always-sells-well" list: Braised Lamb Shank slow cooked with herbs, Cabernet and mustards . . . served with  Pearl Barley Risotto, tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato . . . all for $26.00!

Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Parties, Jackpot Update, More

Thanksgiving Dinner: your house or our house, we have you covered either way!
  • Your House: everyone likes the aroma of Thanksgiving dinner in their home, and certainly having leftovers is another good reason to celebrate at home. However, the preparation and cooking is so time-consuming . . . So, we have a mitigation plan that can't be beat! Our Thanksgiving Dinner to Go for up to 10 People is only $84 and we do all the messy time-consuming part! Find out more by clicking here and please get your order in soon as we do have a cut-off!
  • Our House: both Katie's and CV Steak have traditional Thanksgiving Dinner Specials. And here's the best part, our specials are reasonably priced and we still serve the regular menu in both restaurants. So, no need to get gouged while you are gorging yourself when you go out for Thanksgiving Dinner - at least not here at the Carson Valley Inn. In order to pull all this off, we do make three minor adjustments on Thanksgiving day:  in CV Steak, we open at 1:30 PM instead of 4:30 PM and the Sunset Special is not available on Thanksgiving Day. In Katie's, the usual Thursday night $6.99 Roast Turkey special is not available.  And here's an important tip: if you plan to dine in CV Steak on Thanksgiving Day, please make a reservation now at 775-783-6650.

Speaking of holidays, here are a few more thoughts: Holiday Parties are big at the Carson Valley Inn. Between our convention center, the VIP Picon Room and the private dining room in CV Steak, they'll be something going on just about every night in December. While the weekend evenings are pretty much booked, we still have room on some Sunday through Thursday nights. So, whether it's your office, club, group of friends, or family we can make it quite easy for you to celebrate here at the CVI. Plus, to encourage safety, we offer a very special hotel room rate on the night of your holiday party. Want to know more? Get in touch with Carrie at 775-783-6673.

First Half of $20,000 Guaranteed Giveaway is Saturday! Here's the breakdown - $10,000 in Cash and FreePlay will be given away this Saturday - $5,000 at the CVI and another $5,000 at Bodines. Drawings are at 5, 6, 7 and 8 p.m., all $5,000 will be given away at each location, the whole process repeats on December 19 and all the details are at this link.
Toys for Tots: The Carson Valley Inn is again a collection location for the Toys for Tots program this Christmas Season. The drop-off box is near the hotel desk and we'll call to have it picked up every day if the donations come in that fast!

Airport Shuttle is Rolling! The talk is over, the web site has been tweaked, the schedules are at our hotel desk and the buses are rolling for the Carson Valley Airporter shuttle service between the Carson Valley and Reno – airport and downtown. It's convenient, affordable and waiting for you to use – whether you are arriving at Reno International or travelling from the Valley to Reno . . . . Let's jump on board and make it successful!!

CVI Christmas Decorations Going Up Very Soon: Eileen Knox, our Chief Decorating Elf and pictured here, and her minions are busy unpacking, repairing and polishing the plethora of Christmas Decorations  that will soon be spectacularly visible in our restaurants, hallways,  casino and other areas. In the process, they have crammed decorations in just about every unused or temporarily uninhabited back-of-the house nook and cranny. Just a little peak into the incredible effort that Eileen and her helpers put into bringing the Christmas Spirit to the inside of CVI. Meanwhile, our Engineering staff has just about finished the creation of Candy Cane Lane which will light up on November 30 at the latest!

Mickey Mouse's Birthday: Speaking of Eileen (and we were - just above) she is one of the biggest Disney fans in the west . . . and Mickey Mouse is the icon of Disney . . . and Micky Mouse's Birthday was yesterday (86!) . . . so, Eileen has some special "Hidden Mickey's" going up in the Christmas decorations . . . but more about that next week!

Third Party Kudos for CV Steak: Myscha Theriault is an author and avid traveler. She is currently traveling through North America with her husband and Labrador retriever and the trio recently spent a weekend in the Carson Valley. We were fortunate that they dropped by CV Steak for dinner. Myscha did a great story about her swing through the Carson Valley. Distributed by McClatchy-Tribune News Service, it has popped up in numerous places on the Internet. Here's what Myscha had to say about their dinner in CV Steak (no, the Labrador retriever did not join them for dinner). Here's the excerpt, Thanks, Myscha!!

"If carnivorous offerings captivate your taste buds, you may want to head to CV Steak. Located in the Carson Valley Inn, it also offers a wide array of entrees for less than $30, including steak, seafood, chicken and even a few vegetarian options. Many of their starters are available at less than 10 bucks as well. Value hunters will want to check out a couple of key menu options.
First, their sampler appetizer tray lets you test drive numerous snacks at a price of just $15. It's sized for two to share, and makes a nice start to an extended dining experience. Second, they have an early dining menu that starts at 4:30 in the afternoon and runs for one hour. For $18, you can order a three course meal from a set menu that includes options such as chicken Marsala, salmon fillets, pork medallions and more. Pretty tough to beat, especially for a fine dining experience."

  • Jackpot Update: The Penny Progressive Jackpot was over $45,000 when we checked late yesterday afternoon and the Pro PK'em Progressive is $3,886 for this weekend's NFL games.
  • As Steve Martin Said, "First you get a million dollars: This Monday is the last day to get in on our Monday Millioni$er promotion. Earn just one point on Monday and you get a free $2 pull on the Aristocrat Millioni$er game near CV Steak (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.). The big jackpot is over $2.9 million and someone will eventually win it . . . just sayin!
  • What a Hoot!! The Late Nite Catechism comedy show was hilarious last Saturday night. And that's just one in a series of Comedy Catechism Classes produced by the same folks . . . stay tuned!
  • This Week's Game-On Fridays special in CV Steak is Game Mix Grill with marinated Buffalo and Elk medallions, Venison and Alligator Sausage and finished with a Brandy Cherry Demi-Glace. Served with  tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato . . . all for $29.00! We tried to get the chef to smother it all with a generous helping of Wild Turkey "for the season," but his sense of taste and food pairing outweighed our nonsense!

Airport Shuttle Starts Monday, Dungeons & Dragons Is Here, Last Call for Catechism/Comedy Show, More

The World of Slots Progresses with the Times!
  • Steve Forester, original and longtime General Manager of Bodines and now Corporate Director of Slot Development for Mike Pegram's properties, recently returned from the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. Steve's descriptions of some of the "things to come" in the video slot world were incredible and, in some cases, had us wondering whether he was embellishing a little. But we are rooted in reality here at the CVI (most of the time, anyway) so let's talk about the new stuff we either just acquired or that we will see in the next month or two.
  • Yesterday, the Dungeons and Dragons video games made their way to our floor in what wound up being an all-day installation process. Produced by Konami Gaming, this new slot theme is based on the fantasy role-playing game that has been played by over 20 million people in some form or another since it first appeared in 1974.
  • We recently we added new games from Ainsworth Game Technology including Trojan Treasure, Rich and Wild and Twice the Money.  Aruze Gaming America is also represented on our floor with their new and already popular Ultra Stack Games - Panda, Dragon and Africa.
  • On December 3, the first True 3D video slot called Sphinx will be available at CVI!  Steve shared that this game is being rolled out slowly and that the bigger casinos in Las Vegas are getting only four of them while the smaller casinos like the CVI will only get one. But. By gosh, Steve made sure that we have one coming! The game requires no 3D glasses and symbols pop from the screen and seem inches from your eyes. Sometimes a direct quote is better than anything we can make up, so here is exactly what Steve told us: "It's freaking amazing. I believe there will be some people who won't be able to play it because it will really mess with their heads."  Guess we'll find out soon!
  • Steve is seeing new vendors in the creative world of video slot development and they are bringing in fresh ideas and fascinating games that would've been tagged as pure fantasy a few years ago. Not to worry . . . as always, we will continue to have many traditional games while we follow – and stay ahead of – the developing trends to make sure that those who grew up on video games are entertained on the casino floor with the "new stuff."
So that you have it handy, here are events and happenings we covered in recent blogs – click on the highlighted text for info:

Airport Shuttle Closer, Late Nite Catechism Selling Fast, Poker Room Extras, More

Carson Valley Airporter Getting Very Close: the start of the Carson Valley Airporter shuttle service between the Carson Valley and Reno airport is still a week or two away. However, we know it's getting closer because one of the buses was here a few days ago as it ran the orientation route with all of the drivers. Our Bell Captain (Mark) and one of our Hotel Supervisors (Clarissa) couldn't resist the "Wheel of Fortune" pose next to one of the two specially marked buses that will be running the service. The rates and schedules will be on the Carson Valley Airporter website which now has preliminary information. The folks at The Amador Stage Lines folks will be back in town early next week to deliver the schedule cards which will be then available at our hotel front desk.

Halloween Meets Late Night Catechism: we know this seems like a deliberate set up, but honestly it was a coincidence. Deanna, Stephanie and Julie (l-r in picture) from our Marketing Department dressed up as Nice, Naughty and Mean Nuns for Halloween. In addition to winning the first place day-shift prize, they also gave us a great segue into the Late Night Catechism show coming up on Saturday, November 15 in our Valley Ballroom. This based-on-how-it-really-was comedy show/play is certain to bring tears of laughter and twinges of nostalgia to anyone who was taught by nuns in school, had friends who were taught by nuns in school, or has ever heard any of the "stories" involving having your hands slapped by a ruler. Hurry - tickets are selling faster than we thought! As for the rest of the employee Halloween Costume Contest Winners: Second place on day-shift went to Unique in Katie's who dressed as a Unique-a-Corn. The swing-shift costume winners: First place (tie) went to Jenny at CV Steak Bar (Oktoberfest Gal) and Bonnie in Slots (Dracula) and second place went to Jessica in Slots (Little Bo Peep)! Back to the Nice, Naughty and Mean Nuns for a second - that combination only begins to describe Sister Nonee who will be "teaching"  Late Night Catechism on November 15. More on this show in the "Interesting Tidbits" section below.

Christmas Kickoff Weekend December 4 - 6: As promised in last week's blog, we now have all the information on our website for the Christmas Kickoff Weekend, a three-night package for December 4, 5, and 6. In addition to three nights in the hotel and $100 in dining credit for our restaurants, you'll have access to a number of free Christmas Kickoff activities in Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa that weekend. From Christmas tree lightings to fireworks to Santa arrivals to the parade of lights, you'll have something to do every day and night. This is one of our best weekend values of the year and we suggest you check it out by clicking here.

Secret Circle, California Chrome Come up Short: If you follow horse racing at all you know that Mike's horse Secret Circle ran a close second in the Breeders' Cup Sprint to Work All Week and California Chrome ran well but finished third, half a length behind winner Bayern in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Two good showings last Saturday from horses with local ownership but, unfortunately no trip to the Winner's Circle. The local crowd was solidly behind California Chrome as shown in the above video of rising hope and eventual disappointment  in our Cabaret Lounge during the Breeders' Cup Classic. Mike did have a winner on Sunday at Santa Anita when Global Hottie won the 8th race.

Poker Room Extras: the zany crew in our poker room has put together a couple of enticing extras over the next few weeks. On Tuesday and Thursday nights, a $50 cash drawing is being held for all participants in that night's tournament. All the names go into a hat (or something similar but with the tight security of a hat) and a winner is drawn 30 minutes after the end of the tournament. If you're playing in a live game at the time of the drawing, the 50 bucks is yours. If the winner is not present, the $50 rolls to the next tournament night. Here's the other extra: on Saturdays from 2 to 6 PM, whoever has the high hand of each hour (full house or better) gets a chance to spin the wheel. Regulars know that wheel prizes include 1,000 to 2,000 free INN Club points, dinners in CV Steak, and even a stop on the wheel for a cash progressive jackpot. These two extras are in addition to a whole bunch of other things going on regularly in our poker room. Click here for all the information including what's happening for our 10 Year Poker Room Anniversary on December 19!

Thanksgiving Dinner to Go: It was a big hit last year, so we're bringing it back – Thanksgiving Dinner to Go for up to 10 People is available again! We start with a sizable & plump turkey, add in all the trimmings, and pack it up in a way that makes it easy for you to pick up on Wednesday and heat it all up for Thanksgiving Day. Advance orders are a must and all the details are at this link.

Carrie Nicolaisen – Employee of the Year! This Saturday the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and The Record Courier host the Annual Community Recognition Awards . . . and our own Events, Conventions and Catering Manager Carrie Nicolaisen will be honored as the Carson Valley's Employee of the Year! Carrie has earned the respect of many people and organizations through her work in the community and on the hundreds of functions that are held at the CVI each year!

Veteran's Day is Tuesday, November 11 and we invite all Veterans and Active Military – plus one guest – to our 4th Annual CVI Veteran's Day Spaghetti Feed in the Valley Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.   There will be a Veteran's Day colors presentation, the National Anthem and an invocation at 11 a.m. and then lunch is served until 3 p.m.

As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Even Useful Tidbits and News:
  • Free Entertainment in the Cabaret: Paul Covarelli appears tonight, Steppen Stonz takes the stage Thursday – Saturday nights, NFL Football has the spotlight Sunday and Monday nights and Greg Austin entertains Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Ladies Night: Tonight's Hot Seat winners will receive a Gift Basket from Fresh Ideas and the first 150 ladies to check in tonight will receive a Fall Candy Dish!  To have your business featured on one of our Ladies' Nights (we do pay you for the prizes); call Stephanie at 775-783-7711.

  • This Week's Game-On Fridays special in CV Steak is Braised Buffalo Short Ribs: one and a half pounds of American Bison short ribs braised and slow-cooked, finished with natural pan sauce and served with  tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato . . . all for $29.00!
  • Tuesday is our Monthly Blackjack Tournament – just a $25 buy-in and you're in the hunt for the cash prizes - 50% of all entry and buy-back fees to the winner, 30% to 2nd and 20% to 3rd.  Check at the table games area (aka "The Pit") for all the details.
  • We now have more information available on the annual KTVN Channel 2 Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive on Friday, December 12 at the RV Park entrance from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Nevada Football Coach Brian Polian was his humble yet driven self in his Blitz Luncheon presentation to over 100 alumni and fans in our Valley Ballroom on Monday. With many young players developing fast, the rest of this year and 2015 are looking good!
  • Not that we'd ever tell on anyone, especially with Sister Nonee and the Late Night Catechism show so close . . . but Father Paul at St. Gall's thinks the stories about the nuns and the rulers and embarrassing discipline measures have been embellished over time. Those of us who know better, and dodged an eraser or two ourselves in class, will have the chance to set him straight on Tuesday when he does the invocation at our Veteran's Day Free Spaghetti Lunch!
  • And one final thought for the week: After months of nightly nuisance, when your home phone rings today it won't be a political robo-call!
