MMA Saturday, More Concert News, Fall Golf Event, Blood Drive, More

MMA Ring - Viewing is Even Easier Outside!
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Saturday in TJ’s Corral
Over a dozen bouts are scheduled this Saturday with MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and Muay Thai (Thai boxing) all on the card. The doors open 7 PM and the first bout starts at 8 PM.  Dave Price of the Record Courier delved into the story again this past Sunday and he ties in George Foreman fighting at Caesar’s Tahoe in 1990 at the age of 41 with how local 5-foot-8 heavyweight J.D Adie will turn 40 seven days after his fight. Adie, known in the ring as "Wrecking Ball," will donate his ticket sales to local families fighting cancer. Long-time WFC Announcer and northern Nevada emcee and showman Dreu Muren will explain each bout before it starts. Click here for more tickets and more information.

The CVI's Joey Whitacre Talks About Saturday's MMA Event and Upcoming Concerts on Tahoe Tonight with Kristen Ferrall

The Spinners Concert on Saturday July 8: Henry Fambrough and four friends from a Detroit suburb started a band in 1954 and for five years, it was called the Domingoes. When they decided to rename the band, each member presented a suggestion. Bobby Smith, who restored cars as a hobby, came up with The Spinners, named for a Cadillac hubcap. The name stuck and the group went on to become a leading Motown sound of the seventies. Still performing with the group, Fambrough was recently interviewed by our friends at Tahoe Onstage and he discusses the old Apollo Theatre, scoring their first #1 Hit with Dionne Warwick, his “take” on rap and hip-hop and a myriad of other topics. The Spinners Concert hits the TJ’s Corral stage at 8 PM next Saturday, July 8 and tickets start at $39.

Ticket Situation on the Other Upcoming Concerts in TJ’s:
  • Marshall Tucker Band Concert on Friday, July 28. We’re not fans of “Hurry and get your tickets before they’re all gone” or other alarmist headlines. You've see the large crowds for some of the concerts in TJ's Corral. The Marshall Tucker Band Concert has less than 250 tickets left to sell. Draw your own conclusions!
  • Michael McDonald Concert on Friday, August 18.  This one’s now seven weeks away and when it starts getting “close” on tickets, we’ll come up with something clever to say.
  • Ronnie Milsap Concert on Saturday, August 26. At noon today, somehow magically, there will appear a link on the Ronnie Milsap Concert page that takes you to our ticket terms and then the ability to buy tickets for this concert. Have at it (starting at noon)! And when this one gets close, we’ll probably come up with some type of “play” on his hit "I Wouldn't Have Missed It for the World." One important item we missed in announcing this concert last week, this concert is a benefit for The Children’s Cabinet.

Donate Blood Here at CVI Today!
It’s not too late to donate blood today at the United Blood Services Northern Nevada All American Blood Drive in our west lot . . . that’s right along Hwy 395 near our big electronic sign.  The bloodmobiles will be here from 10 AM to 6 PM and by donating today you’re entered into a drawing for a Harley-Davidson® Iron 883 from Chester’s Reno Harley-Davidson®.

Mixed Scramble
Our 2017 Mixed Scramble is the second weekend in September . . . that’s just ten weeks away and now is the time to “sign up!”  It’s definitely a Golf Party Weekend with a Friday evening reception and blind draw, a player-friendly scramble on Saturday at the Genoa Lakes Ranch Course and an awards dinner on Saturday night with prizes and often a few surprises! Please tell your friends, golfing associates, members of the golf clubs to which you belong, your club champion . . . plus your in-laws, bookie, ex-spouse, and hair stylist (they really have a knack for spreading the word)!  The more people who participate, the bigger the prize pool and the higher the level of fun, laughter and camaraderie. Hope you can make it!

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Steve Lord tonight, The VooDoo Cowboys, Thursday thru Saturday, Hans Eberbach Sunday through Wednesday. Playing together since 2009, the Voodoo Cowboys have appeared at most major casino venues in Nevada.  They are the life of the party with their dance-inducing, hard drivin' style whether playing country music (and not the cryin' in your beer stuff) or an impressive selection of classic rock ‘n’ roll. The group has rocked crowds around the world and has shared stages with such rock and country stars as David Nail, Little Texas, Ron Keel, Toby Keith and many more. Vocalist and songwriter Hans Eberbach has released a solo album, “Up Is The Only Way Out” and he also sings for Joy & Madness, an evolution of vintage soul sound with modern classic pop sensibilities. He also fronts his own band HANS! and the HOT MESS representing his original singer-songwriter-electronic soul work.

Another Concert Added, MMA in TJ's Corral, More

Break in the Concert Series – Don’t Fight It!
We have a temporary break in the concert series until The Spinners Concert on Saturday July 8 . . . So time to talk more about the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) event coming up in TJ’s Corral on Saturday, July 1! While many of the bouts are MMA, two other disciplines will also be on display, BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and Muay Thai (Thai boxing).  Why this unusual event in the Carson Valley? Turns out there are a number of local (Carson Valley and Carson City) residents who are into one of these disciplines and a few of them will be on the card and in the octagon in TJ’s Corral. David Park (pictured) is certainly a well-known name in Carson Valley and we were surprised when we found out he is competing. Also on the card are Carson Valley residents JD Adie, JD Allbright and others. For The Record Courier’s article on the event, click here. Interested in attending? Click here for more information and tickets.

And Still to Come in TJ’s with tickets available on our web site:

But Wait – There’s One More Concert!
Just yesterday we finalized a Ronnie Milsap Concert for TJ’s Corral on Saturday, August 26!  A 2014 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, Ronnie Milsap was one of country music's most popular and influential performers of the 1970s and 1980s. Milsap was know for his  "crossover" hits which incorporated elements of pop, R&B and rock and roll. Among them: "It Was Almost Like a Song", "Smoky Mountain Rain", "(There's) No Gettin' Over Me", "I Wouldn't Have Missed It for the World", "Any Day Now" and "Stranger in My House." With his hand in six Grammy Awards and forty No. 1 country hits he will be a welcome addition to our 2017 concert lineup and we’ll have more information next week.

Donate Blood Next Wednesday and You Might Just Win a Harley!
Kudos to the folks at United Blood Services Northern Nevada who always come up with an “extra” for their Blood Drive themes.  This year, simply donate blood by September 5 and you’re entered into a drawing for a Harley-Davidson® Iron 883 from Chester’s Reno Harley-Davidson®.  The Annual All American Blood Drive at the CVI next Wednesday, June 28 is one of those opportunities and we suggest you get on the schedule now. More importantly, every time you donate blood you are potentially saving a life . . . So thanks in advance for doing your part to make next week’s All American Blood Drive a success!

Put Me In Coach!
" Put Me In Coach!" Every kid who has played any sport has either said or heard these words. It's what every kid wants – to get put in the game. Over 150 kids got "put in" last Friday when coach Mike Tice, a good friend of CVI owner Mike Pegram, brought his friends to town for the 7th Annual Mike Tice Charity Golf Tournament. Some of these 100+ folks just happened to include most of  the coaching staff from the Oakland Raiders including head coach Jack del Rio. Although primarily in town for a social golf weekend, the coaches headed out to the Boys and Girls Club at Pau Wa Lu Middle School on Friday. All the kids got new athletic shoes courtesy coach Mice Tice and Under Armor. You might have also seen the T-shirts they all received when many of these kids were running around at the Concert in the Park last Friday. The entire weekend raised over ¼ million dollars for the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada Carson Valley Branch (watch for the exact figure to be released by the Boys and Girls Club this week). But for those 150+ kids who were there last Friday, the memory will be much bigger: for that one afternoon, they got "put in" by an NFL coach . . . Something they will never forget!

Two Pertinent Points:
  • Today is National Selfie Day, the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. Take a selfie of yourself, tag the Carson Valley Inn on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and call it a (long) day!
  • Yesterday was National Hike with a Geek Day and we have a very specific reason for bringing this up: yesterday we actually posted a position for an IT Technician and, somewhat ironically, three quarters of the people who currently work in our IT Department are active backpackers and hikers! So if you know anyone who’s a good IT technician, whether they like hiking or not, have them check out the posting on our employment page. As the saying goes, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist as we also have plenty of other positions available here at the CVI.

Their Kid and Nic Show keeps the crowd dancing, singing and laughing along as they perform pop, rock, dance, oldies, current and classic country, 80's hits, Latin, funk, swing, blues, jazz and reggae. The show also features some fun "theme" medleys of songs from movies such as Grease, The Blues Brothers and Animal House. Kenny Was Incredible, Aaron Watson's Story, Why Visit Carson Valley, More

Last Friday’s Kenny Loggins Concert:
Incredible . . . for a number of reasons. Kenny could not have been more audience friendly . . . He even wandered down one of the aisles while singing and many up-close pictures were snapped by at first startled, but pleasantly surprised fans. The atmosphere was reminiscent of Cheers as so many in the audience seemed to know so many other people’s names . . . and what positive comments from those enjoying their first concert at TJ’s Corral. The evening was captured in this review from our friends at Tahoe OnStage.  We could go on, but that’s looking backwards. So, looking forward to this Friday’s concert . . .

This Will Inspire You To Never Give Up: “Never let someone discourage you from chasing your dreams. Let their doubt fuel your fire.” This is from a flash card that Aaron Watson shows in the above video which plays to the background of a medley of many of his songs. It’s the story of a country singer who was told he’d never make it by an industry that now supports him. He is an inspiring artist who understands the importance of his fans and you’ll get to hear him along with Clare Dunn this Friday in TJ’s Corral. Click here for more information and tickets.

How Far Away From the Stage Will I Be?
How Far is My Seat from the TJ’s Stage? This question was asked in one form or another quite a bit before the Kenny Loggins Concert (lots of first-timers to TJ’s) so let’s put this into perspective for everyone buying tickets for upcoming concerts: From the farthest seat to the front of the stage is less than 100 feet . . . a distance we checked from three different locations with an accurate golf rangefinder. To put this in perspective: An NHL Hockey Ring is 200 feet long – that’s twice as much. A football field is 160 feet wide – that’s over 1½ times more. The distance between first and third base on a baseball diamond is 127 feet – still less distance than you’d be from the front of the stage if you stood in the farthest corner of the grass viewing area in TJ’s.  The length of an NBA Basketball court is 94 feet and that’s about how far you are from the front of the stage in the furthest-away seat we sell!

And Still to Come in TJ’s with tickets available on our web site:
Get These Events on Your Calendar:
  • Today is World Blood Donor Day: Since it’s probably already too late for you to schedule a donation today, here’s an idea: United Blood Service’s Annual All American Blood Drive at the CVI is Wednesday, June 28 and you can get on the schedule now.
  • Thursday is the second 2017 Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk  in Gardnerville. This month it’s a “Western Theme” so be sure to swing through Sharkey’s Casino for a stop at the Silver Dollar Bar as you stroll around town sipping and chatting on what is forecast to be a most pleasant evening for just about any outdoor mingling!

Touchdown at Topaz
Why Visit the Carson Valley?  Depends who you ask and their hot buttons or “point of view.” Thanks to some targeted efforts by the Carson Valley Visitors Authority, a number of articles have been popping up recently by writers who have visited the area. They all have a different “take” and here is one by Curt Johnson who says the Carson Valley is A Must For Your Next Vacation Spot!  And if you’re coming our way on vacation, be sure to stay right here at the Carson Valley Inn in our Hotel, Motor Lodge or RV Park!

Chris Twomey has been writing and playing music around the country since 2003.  Born and raised in the Sacramento valley, his roots are deep into a genre of folk-rock.  From 2Me to The Diva Kings to Dad's LPs to whatever is next. Justin Lee is the west coast’s answer to new country music. With roots in small town Yerington, Nevada, Justin Lee is bringing a new level of excitement to country as we know it. Justin opened for Mark Chesnutt in October of 2014 at We Dig Mining, a fundraiser to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nevada. A Night In The Country – Nevada’s largest country music festival – featured Justin on the main stage prior to The Band Perry in 2015. Cliff and Dave are powerhouse singer/gospel drummer Cliff Porter and southern-fried singer/guitarist Dave Berry. Often seen fronting the band Jelly Bread, the duo provides an evening of sultry R&B, funk and swinging rock ’n’ roll,

Kenny Loggins this Friday, Tickets Now Available for (who?), More in CVI Blog

Tickets Sale Date Announced for . . . He’s been part of The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and The Dukes of September. He’s been nominated for 13 Grammy awards and won five of these prestigious Gramophone trophies. His name is Michael McDonald and he’ll be appearing live in TJ’s Corral on Friday, August 18. Tickets go on sale this Friday at 7 AM!  Grab yours online at this page after or stop by our hotel desk - but not until after 7 AM this Friday! Grab yours online at this page or stop by our hotel desk - but not until after 7 AM this Friday!

Our Segue to this Friday’s Kenny Loggins Concert: Turns out Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins co-wrote a few songs including the 1979 Record of the Year and Song of the Year, "What a Fool Believes."  They also appeared together a couple of nights ago with Thundercat on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon singing “Show You the Way.” Quite a display of the smooth sounds and high range for all three of the singers! Wish we could tell you that there are some front row seats available, but we can’t. However, there are still a few Standing Room tickets available for this Friday’s Kenny Loggins Concert and remember that doesn’t mean you have to stand – you’re welcome to bring a blanket and sit on the elevated grass area. Want another Kenny Loggins tidbit? He appeared as himself and sang "Danny's Song" in the 2014 series finale "The Father/Daughter Dance" of Raising Hope on Fox.

And a week from this Friday it’s another live concert in TJ’s with Aaron Watson featuring special guest Clare Dunn.  So just how did Aaron Watson's album Vaquero  debut three months ago at No. 2 on Country Billboard’s chart, and No. 1 on iTunes' All-Genre chart?  Why does he think of himself as not being in the country music business; but rather as a small business owner (his “small business” supports 22 employees and their 43 children)?  Answers to these questions and more about his fascinating and up-and-coming method of approaching music business are covered in this article in entrapreneur.com.  We know you're more interested in Aaron’s music than his business acumen, so be sure to catch Aaron Watson featuring special guest Clare Dunn next Friday, June 16 in TJ’s Corral. While our area has grown considerably over the past few years, the lyrics to his “Song Big Love in a Small Town” reminded us of the old days in Minden and Gardnerville.

And Still to Come in TJ’s with tickets available on our web site:
Welcome to Gardnerville Sharkey’s Style
On both sides of the outside of Sharkey’s Casino there is a large Welcome to Gardnerville mural, each created by Larry Henry, the creative and imaginative architect whose talent is behind all the design work at Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and the Carson Valley Inn. This week, with input from Larry, we walk you through the graphics on each letter on the south side of Sharkey’s Casino, also duplicated on the wall at the back of the Jackpot Café restaurant. Check it out next time you are in Sharkey’s: The G depicts old time Gardnerville. The A has a picture of Harvey Gross, founder of Harvey’s Casino and former major ranch owner in Carson Valley. The R is a Mule Deer, the D shows California Chrome and the N is Emerald Bay. The E pictures old-time Sharkey’s visitors Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and the R features Sharkey Begovich himself. The V is a family riding bicycles (no local tie we could establish) and the old fashioned lady in the I may just be Mashelle or Connie Begovich!? The first L is a golfer enjoying the Carson Valley and the second L is Casey Tibbs whose saddles were on display in Sharkey’s many, many years ago. As for the final E, we speculate the snowboarder may be Larry Henry (the artist) himself, we just can’t get him to admit it! (Full disclosure, we snuck across the hall and stole this article from the editor of the Carson & Valley Voice - the same article appeared in the June/July issue just mailed locally.)

Free - This Thursday and Saturday in the Cabaret Lounge
The Novelists Acoustic Duo tonight, The Whiskey Heroes Thursday and Saturday, Rock On Friday, Rock River Sunday and Monday and Chris Twomey next Tuesday and Wednesday. The Novelists Acoustic Duo provides cliffhanger storytelling, dual lead singing personalities and their signature harmonies. The Whiskey Heroes began in 2014 with rock roots surrounded by a country locale Their first single (Night in the Country) was mixed by Grammy award winning mixer Mark Needham. Since then, the band has added Matt Bailey on rhythm guitar, Dillon Secklin on drums, and Max Landis on bass and backup vocals. With the momentum from their recordings, and the addition of the other members, The Whiskey Heroes earned a spot to open for the Night in the Country music festival in 2015 and they have been invited back for 2017.  Their debut album was released in 2016. Rock On is a party band and a PARTY is what they’ll be leading in the Cabaret Lounge this Friday after the Kenny Loggins concert. Rock River is the duo of Buddy and Kim from the Buddy Emmer Blues Band presenting an evening of blues and other music! Chris Twomey has been writing and playing music around the country since 2003.  Born and raised in the Sacramento valley, his roots are deep into a genre of folk-rock.  From 2Me to The Diva Kings to Dad's LPs to whatever is next.

Stuff Ya Just Gotta Know:
  • Today is Chocolate Ice Cream Day and there’s really no other explanation or excuse needed!
  • Saturday is World Gin Day which we bring up for two reasons: first, we have plenty of different kinds of gins in our Cabaret Lounge and CV Steak  bars . . . And second, we're really exciting about the progress at the Bentley Heritage distillery project just a few hundred yards from our front Casino entrance. Gin is just one of the many spirits they’ll be making but much more on that will be coming as the early-2018 opening gets closer.
