Super Sunday at CVI, Small Plates, More Valentine's Day Dining Options

Super Sunday at the Inn
  • The $5,000 Progressive Pro PK'EM will be won this week!  Our 15-pick card on Sunday’s game has the winner, over/under and 13 “props” such as first or last team to score, largest lead, margin of victory, etc. You can play this $5 card as often as you’d like at CVI, Sharkey's Casino, Bodines Casino and Slot World Casino. Whoever picks the most out of 15 wins the $5,000 Jackpot and any ties will be split!  Be sure to hang on to your ticket because just like those lottery jackpot winners you read about, we do not know who has the winning ticket(s) – it’ up to you to check in with us starting Tuesday when the books open in our 4 casinos. As for those “giant” Super Game progressive jackpots advertised elsewhere: Just a friendly reminder there are thousands of players wagering at a few hundred locations around Nevada. We like our odds much better with just four casinos!
  • So Who Will Throw More Touchdown Passes?  Heck if we know . . . but we do know there are dozens of different proposition bets you can make on the Super Bowl at our sports book and all are related to the game itself. Will so-and-so score a touchdown? Will this person have more or less than 82.5 pass receiving yards? Which team will score first? How will they score? And so on. Six pages of money line bets plus 20+ different players to pick at different odds as to whether they will win the MVP or be the first to score a touchdown in the game!
  • Halftime Wagering: If you don’t like the way the first half turns out based on your initial bets . . . or if you just have a gut feel about the second half, don’t pass up the opportunity to stop by the Sports Book at halftime. So many “fortunes” (OK, so this word is somewhat over-dramatic) were swung one way or another during halftime of the 2017 Super Bowl.  In case you forgot, the Patriots came back from a seemingly insurmountably 28 – 9 halftime disadvantage to win 34 – 28.  Tom Brady threw for 466 yards that year – do you remember the other Patriot who threw a pass (the pass fell incomplete)?
  • $200 Super Sunday Football Grid in Our Poker Room:  Win squares by making a Full House or higher in live action Texas Hold’ em or any hand of Tens Full or higher in Pineapple or Omaha. Grid numbers will be drawn on Sunday, February 4 when the board is full and the payout is $50 each for 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters and for final score.  You don’t have to be present to win, but winners do need to pick up your cash by the end of the business day Monday.
  • You Can’t Escape It Sunday!  Everywhere you look the game will be on . . . . from the big screen in our Cabaret Lounge to one of the many HD screens in the Casino, the Cabaret Lounge, the Casino Bar, the Table Games, the CV Steak Bar and in the Poker Room.
  • Enjoy $2 Draft Beer during the game in the Cabaret Lounge, at the Cabaret Bar and at the CV Steak Bar. If you get the munchies, we’ll be glad to bring your bar bites order to you at your seat!
  • Drawings After the Game:  Stop in the casino after the game for Hot Seat Drawings with the chance to win up to $1,000. Use your INN Club card while playing to be eligible!
Kenny Rice Started a Radio Show
Kenny Rice is a seasoned sportscaster who has appeared on ESPN, NBC, NBCSN and Mark Cuban’s HDNet. Best known for his horse racing reporting and coverage, he recently started The Kenny Rice Horse Racing Show. Who did he pick to be on his very first show when it debuted earlier this month? Mike Pegram, long-time horse racing icon and owner of the Carson Valley Inn, Bodines Casino, Sharkey’s Casino and SlotWorld Casino. Valentine’s Day Dining – Sharkey’s, Too!
Last week we detailed Valentine’s Day Dining at the CVI which includes regular menus in CV Steak and Katie’s plus these Valentine’s Day Specials. Hopefully you are among the many who “got the message” and already made reservations in CV Steak!  The Jackpot Café in Sharkey’s is also offering its regular menu plus two $14.99 Valentine’s Day specials from 4 to 10 PM: A Caprese Top Sirloin Steak and Grilled Salmon with Pineapple Salsa. Both of these complete dinners include choice of soup or salad.

Sharkey’s Father/Daughter Dinner Special
The annual Father/Daughter Sweetheart Dance is this Saturday at the Community Center and Sharkey's Jackpot Cafe is running a pre-dance special from 4 to 6 PM for daughter and dad! Just $20 includes choice of soup or salad and non-alcoholic beverages for both. Dad chooses his entrée from Meatloaf, Chicken Parmesan, Pork Chops or Salmon; daughter chooses from Spaghetti and Meatballs, Baked Mac ‘n’ Cheese or Chicken Tenders ‘n’ Fries.

Speaking of Daughters
Anyone with a daughter will certainly relate to this short tidbit from our friends at The Change Companies in one of their Leading with Heart postings. The writers’ daughter overheard her parents’ conversation about Small Plates and her subsequent comments took them down a most unexpected path.  It’s a one-minute read and we’re sure you will get a chuckle!

And Speaking of Small Plates
We do have a few guests who take the Small Plate approach to dinner in CV Steak. It works something like this:  They start by each enjoying a selection from our Specialty Martini Menu.  A tableside tossed salad comes next along with choosing a bottle of wine that seems fitting for the evening. They then “split” three or four appetizers and top it off with two of our scrumptious desserts.  Kind of reminds you of the couple mentioned in the article link above from The Change Companies!

Food Fodder
Carrot Cake - We Make 'Em Here!!
  • Saturday is Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. We are not a big fan of ice cream for breakfast but we understand that some people may enjoy this approach. So, here's a way to mix an early AM ice cream fetish with the traditional approach: ask for a scoop of vanilla ice cream on your stack of pancakes in Katie's! Sure, the server may look at you funny, but there is no reason why we can't do it for you!
  • Sunday is Carrot Cake Day. We make ‘em here in our Bakery and you can enjoy anytime by the slice in Katie’s . . . or take home a whole Carrot Cake from the Katie’s Bakery Counter!
  • Monday is Homemade Soup Day. Don’t feel like making soup at home? We’ve got the perfect answer to these chilly winter days: two housemaid soups served every day in Katie’s – we make them here, and not from a can or packaged mix.
  • Monday is Stuffed Mushroom Day. We got thinking about the fact that stuffed mushrooms are traditionally mushroom caps stuffed with a mixture of the mushroom stems, cheese and spices. We don't serve stuffed mushrooms as such, but there is a great mushrooms stuffing in the Mushroom Ravioli available in CV Steak as an appetizer or an entrée!

Who!?
Raptors Running Rampant is what the 200+ participants in this weekend’s Eagles & Agriculture event are hoping to see as they gawk and gaze from local ranches, barns and highways. Now if you just want an up-close look at a falcon or owl, we suggest you keep your eyes open as you walk in and out of our hotel entrance this weekend. At various times you’re likely to see either – or even both – as the weekend’s activities unfold.  And our thanks goes out to the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce for headquartering so many of this weekend’s “Eagles and Ag” activities here at the CVI!
No, You Can't Deduct the Dog Under the New Tax Guidelines!
Tax Time Rolling In
You’ve been asking about Win/Loss Statements for the tax year 2018 so here’s a quick reminder on how it works: we do need your signature on a signed request in order to run one of these reports. However, we make it easy for you using this form.  And if you had winnings at more than one of our locations, you can check the appropriate locations (Carson Valley Inn, Bodines Casino, Sharkey’s Casino and SlotWorld Casino) and we’ll get all of your 2018 reports prepared.  As a reminder, all we can report for you is play recorded while you’ve been using your Player Club card. Also a reminder that we cannot, and do not, offer any type of tax advice.

Winter Base Camp For Fun, A Suggestion for the Guys, New Visitors Guide, More

Following Up on Last Week’s Blog
  • Some of the folks associated with the upcoming Eagles & Agriculture called to remind us that the exploring of our area and this heritage is not necessarily limited to January 24 – 27. You can always engage a Professional Guide on your time-table and enjoy a personalized and customized ranch and eagle tour led by some expert area guides.
  • We don’t know if it was the story that ran in last week’s blog, or it was meant to happen anyway, but our Winter Sporting Clays Event filled to capacity last weekend.  Thanks for an overwhelming response producing what will be our largest turnout ever for this event.
  • And assuming it was the article that “Sold Out” the Winter Sporting Clays Event, we’re hoping to cast the same spell on our Spring Stag Golf Event at the end of April by mentioning it this week! There’s an optional practice round Thursday followed by an arrival reception on Thursday night. Play is at the Genoa Lakes courses on Friday and Saturday and there’s a closing banquet Saturday night!  Either click here for all the info and a sign-up form, or call Greg today at 775-783-6615.
  • And then our own folks turned on us when the CV Steak team demanded equal time (last week was Katie’s comments) for some of the many comments posted recently about our Nevada style steakhouse:
    • My filet was so awesome, I actually cut it with my fork. I dare anyone to find a better one, AND I had the twice baked potato. Holy smokes, takes yum to another level. The house salad had a dressing that was perfection! Service was great.  - Donna J
    • Excellent food, huge portions and great service!! oh yeah, very reasonable prices! - Barbara G.
    • My wife and I had a great experience here on a recent anniversary. The meal was excellent - best-tasting steak I've had in a very long time. Salad prepared at table-side. Sides all great. Had a nice piece of cheesecake for desert - also great. Pretty decent wine selection, maybe not as extensive as similar places in California, but their offerings more than adequately covered the spectrum. And prices for everything seemed pretty reasonable. Service was friendly, and neither too frequent nor too rare. I'm kind of a hard grader, and I definitely recommend this place when you're looking for a really nice steak meal. – Gary D.
Visitors Guide Filled with Info
Have One Mailed to You,
Or Download a Digital Copy
We tip our hat to the Carson Valley Visitors Authority, aka Visit Carson Valley, on the recent publication of their 2019 Visitors Guide. The award-winning appearance is just the beginning. In our opinion, the content is a “must-read” for new or even repeat visitors to our beautiful area. To request a copy be mailed to you, or to view and download the online version, simply click hereAnd speaking of the Carson Valley Visitors Authority, they also called us after reading the snowmobiling article in last week’s blog. They politely reminded us of the other winter activities in our area such as Snowshoeing, Cross-Country Skiing, Snowboarding, Hiking, Biking and more. They put their arms around the whole subject under the label Winter Base Camp for Fun . . . check it out!

Special Events Coming Up at CVI
We’re getting into the season when many organizations hold special events here at the Carson Valley Inn and we’ll be glad to help you with more information on any of the following. Very Useful Information
Guys, take this seriously: Valentine’s Day is only four weeks away!! A smart move would be to make reservations in CV Steak as soon as possible by calling 775-783-6650. Wait too long and . . . well, just do it now! As for our Valentine’s Day specials? We hope to have them for you next week for both Katie’s and CV Steak.

Marginally Useful Information
  • Today is Nothing Day.  Bet you can’t wait to read about how we are going to tie this to the CVI! Seems that Nothing Day has been commemorated since 1973 and the day is literally about doing nothing at all. Furthermore, there is absolutely no purpose or intended structure for this pointless celebration. As for tying it to the Carson Valley Inn as we so alluded  . . . Well, we got nothing!
  • Thursday is Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day. So if you’re letting loose of a resolution that was in any way, shape, or form keeping you from coming into the Carson Valley Inn so far in 2019, welcome back!
  • Saturday is Popcorn Day.  Being upfront, we cannot tie this Day to the CVI. However, some of us really do like popcorn so we thought everyone should know this is not an uncontrolled food . . . there is actually a Popcorn Board overseeing the whole subject of popcorn!  What’s this mean to you? Probably back where we started this section: Nothing!

Falcons in the Ballroom, Elvis Leaves the Building Thursday, This Event Almost Full, More

Eagles & Agriculture
The annual Eagles & Agriculture weekend is coming up January 24 – 27 and the Falconers’ Dinner in our Valley Ballroom (Friday January 25) has become one of the event’s most popular offerings. This year, the ag speaker will be Jeff Hunewill of the famous Hunewill Ranch in Mono County. Jeff will talk about how they combine a huge working cattle ranch with a vibrant and popular program that allows visitors to join them for several days and experience ranch life from the saddle. The falconers scheduled to appear are Kathleen Tigan, who will bring along ‘Louise’, the Eurasian Eagle Owl; first time participant Kalen Pearson, who is bringing a mature female Golden Eagle; local falconers Ryan Moglich with his White Gyrfalcon and of course, Eagles & Ag regular Lew Sauder with a Goshawk. They will share their knowledge and anecdotes about what it’s like to be the caretaker and partner of their birds. A four-course dinner is part of the evening and tickets are just $45 each. For information on all of the Eagles & Agriculture tours, seminars and events, click here.

Snowmobiling for CVI Guests
Snowmobiling season is in full swing after last weekend’s snowfall and since we often receive inquiries from hotel guests and locals, here’s what we know: there are two snowmobiling operations in our area and each offers a different mountain adventure.  Lake Tahoe Adventures specializes in basic through advanced backcountry snowmobiling tours in Hope Valley off Highway 88. Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Jamie Rollins tonight, Revival Thursday thru Saturday, and Tyler Stafford next Tuesday and Wednesday. An upbeat and experienced entertainer, Jamie Rollins performs a variety of music from country to rock, to classic oldies and R&B – plus a few his own songs.  Revival recreates the music of the '60s, '70s, and '80s, with a stunning accuracy and precision that's rarely found in today's live music scene. They will take you from the British invasion, through the muddy fields of Woodstock, to the diverse songs of the 80's like no one else can. Named “Reno’s Best Songwriter 2013” Tyler Stafford is a homegrown talent. His songs often draw comparisons to songwriters such as John Mayer and Paul Simon delivered with a candor and immediacy reminiscent of John Lennon.
