Join the Never-A-Dull-Moment Casino World
Sometimes we sit around pondering some of the things we see or hear at our properties and marvel at how many "just when we thought we've seen everything" experiences we have. And before you judge, most of the time it's really good, heartwarming, humorous or entertaining. We'd like to promise you working at one of our properties promises never a dull moment, but no job (at least in our area) can make that guarantee. On the other hand, there's always something new to learn, experience or contribute in the casino business so why not consider being part of this scene. If you're in the Carson City area, come to the job fair today (2 to 7 PM) and Thursday (9 AM to 2 PM) at Slot World on Hwy 50 East where we are hiring for most positions at that location and some at Bodines Casino. If you're more interested in a position in the Carson Valley, check our web site for these openings at the Carson Valley Inn and Sharkey's Casino.

Last Week of the Month Brings . . .
We wrap up our October casino promotions this week so be sure to check for the details on the following in the In the Casino section below: tonight’s drawings for a Free $500 Shopping Spree at ladies night, Cash and Free Play Giveaway Grand Prize Drawings Saturday, October Mystery Multiplier Scratch Drawings Sunday and a special 5X Points Multiplier Tuesday.  And be sure to check next Wednesday’s Blog (November 1) for news on our November casino promotions, Thanksgiving Dining at the Inn, our annual Veteran’s Day Spaghetti Feed Luncheon and more.

Pasta, Chocolate and More
CV Steak Molten Lava Kahlua Cake
dressed up like a C
hocolate Mousse for Halloween
  • Today is World Pasta Day. Works out pretty good for us because all three of the $6.99 Italian Specials in Katie's tonight happen to include pasta! Or, slip into CV Steak where our pasta entrées include Mushroom Ravioli (also available as an appetizer portion), Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo, Seafood Linguine and Spaghetti Pomodoro.
  • Friday is Cranky Coworkers Day. Our approach? Just give 'em a wider berth today (quick, duck around the corner, here comes one now!) and don’t give them any of your chocolate.
  • Saturday is National Chocolate Day (saw that coming, huh!) Last we counted there are over a dozen chocolate options between the desserts in Katie's and CV Steak and the offerings in Job's Perk. Our favorite? It’s a coin toss between the Molten Lava Kahlua Cake in CV Steak or a Mini Chocolate Cream Pie from the Katie’s Bakery Counter . . . or maybe the CV Steak Chocolate Mousse . . . or a couple of the Chocolate Brownies from Katie’s and  large glass of milk . .  darn, we just gained 7 pounds thinking about it!
  • Sunday is National Oatmeal Day. Sure we serve hot oatmeal in Katie's but we think it would be hypocritical to even mention it considering all the chocolate desserts we just covered. So, we’ll bail out by reminding you that we also sell Oatmeal Cookies at the Katie’s Bakery Counter.
To the Skies One More Time
One last look at the Aviation Roundup that filled our Valley’s skies earlier this month in this “how’d they get some of those shots?!” video assembled by Visit Carson Valley – Sound On!

Football and Other Sports Info
  • Our Guys Picks:  Each of our “professional” (check their records!) sports prognosticators went 1 & 1 last week. It could have been better, it could have been worse.  This week Greg (5 & 9 overall) loves the Arizona Wildcats +3 against Washington St. and the Jets +4 versus the Falcons.  Mike (8 & 6) is also going with two dogs, Penn State at + 6½ against Ohio State and TCU at -6½ visiting Iowa State.  Alan (7 & 7) likes two favorites, the Eagles at +13 against the Niners and USC at -3 vs. Arizona State.
  • Enjoy $2 Draft Beer during all televised Pro and College football games at the CVI - and our staff will bring your bar bites order right to your seat.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM is at $3,320 this week. Cards are just $5 each!
  • NFL hats, tee shirts, Budweiser merchandise and other prizes are given away in drawings during Monday Night Football at the CVI. Also, three tickets are distributed each week for the Ultimate Tailgate Party package which will be given away during the Monday Night Football game on December 18.
  • Monday Night Football Grid in our poker room every week – we start with $160 each week and add in any unclaimed prizes from the previous week. Last week all four prizes went unclaimed (gotta be here on Monday to win) so we’re giving away $80 for each of the first three quarters and the final score . . . earn entries during live poker games ‘til all squares are claimed.
  • Place Your Bet: Place your bets on the World Series, Pro and College Football, NHL Hockey, NBA Basketball, Horse Racing and the NASCAR First Data 500 at the Martinsville Speedway this Sunday. Some of the futures on the board include winners for the 2017 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup, 2018 Super Bowl, 2018 NCAA Basketball and Football Championships, 2018 NBA Championship and 2018 NHL Stanley Cup.
  • Sports tickets can be cashed-in at Guest Services when the Sports Book is closed. Horse Race tickets can be cashed only when the Race and Sports Book is open. Winning sports bets placed at any of our three casinos (CVI, Bodines and Sharkey’s) can be cashed at any of the three locations.
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:
Patrick Major tonight, Buddy Emmer Band Thursday - Saturday, NFL Football on Sunday and Monday and Chris Twomey Tuesday and Wednesday. Patrick Major has his own mix of original guitar and vocals combined with rock classics from the last four decades.  The Buddy Emmer Band is a longtime favorite on the West Coast and Northern Nevada circuit.  The group’s versatile style includes everything from blues to jazz, rock to reggae and top 40. Whatever your taste in tunes they will be sure to please! Chris Twomey’s roots are deep into a genre of folk-rock.  From 2Me to The Diva Kings to Dad's LPs to whatever is next!

In the Casino
  • Penny Progressive:  The jackpot is now over $64,000 and that's a pretty good jump from last week as play continues to increase at all three of our properties; the CVI, Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. It's a natural occurrence as progressive jackpots increase: the higher the jackpot climbs, the more attention and play it attracts and the faster it grows. While the odds of winning the jackpot are the same on every "pull," the likelihood of someone hitting it definitely goes up as the number of pulls increases. That's enough theorizing – the bottom line is you can't win this jackpot if you're not playing!
  • Ladies’ Night Tonight:  Join us 5:30 to 8:30 PM tonight with a free Chocolate Shoppe Treat for the first 150 ladies and Chocolate  Shoppe Gift Baskets as hot seat prizes. Also tonight: games, drink specials, FREE Bingo and your last chance to earn entries for tonight’s 8 PM drawings for a Free $500 Shopping Spree!
  • VIP Gifts Thursday: free VIP Gift Giveaways at 2, 4, 6 and 8 PM!
  • Friday Giveaway Drawings: Join us at 5, 7 & 9 PM for up to $10,000 in Cash and Free Play!
  • 5X Points Saturday: That’s five times the benefits for your play all day this Saturday.
  • Grand Prize Drawings Saturday:  Bonus drawings for Cash and Free Play this Saturday at 6 & 8 PM in the finale of our October casino promotion.
  • Scratcher Drawings Sunday: the drawings are at 6 and 8 PM and this one’s for the many local Inn Club members who received an October mailer with Mystery Multiplier Scratchers. Be sure to use your Inn Club card whenever you play in the casino and you might just be on the list for future monthly mailers.
  • 5X Points for Halloween: Another chance to scare up five times the benefits for your play all day on Tuesday – and keep an eye out ‘cause there’s no telling how some of our fellow employees might be cleverly costumed on Halloween!
  • Here’s a Handy Page with all our Current Casino Promotions!

4th Casino Soon, Nevada Coach Norvell Here Monday, Sporting Clays Event, More

Carson Valley Inn Gets Another Sibling!
We're talking a major facelift at Slot World
We often refer to Sharkey's Casino and Bodines Casino as "sister properties" of the Carson Valley Inn. Accepting that term, our family is now "expecting" a fourth sibling, Slot World on Highway 50 East in Carson City. Mike Pegram and his partners recently acquired the property and the business. Extensive renovations are now underway and as was the case when Mike acquired the Carson Valley Inn, just about every area, inside and out, is being refurbished, remodeled, refreshed, or otherwise renewed. Both the restaurant and the casino will retain their "local" charm, new air-handling equipment is being installed, and if everything goes as planned, Slot World will be open for business by Thanksgiving weekend! While the majority of employees from the "old" Slot World will return, we will be looking for additional staff members. If you're interested, please stop by the Job Fair in the Slot World restaurant area on Wednesday, October 25 from 2 to 7 PM and Thursday, October 26 from 9 AM to 2 PM. Who knows, you may even be able to get a peek at some of the remodeling progress!!

See and Hear Coach Jay Norvell this Monday
Gritiron Lunch Monday with Nevada Coach Jay Norvell
After putting up 77 points and gaining over 1100 yards in the last two weeks the Nevada Wolfpack football team is starting to create the offensive excitement touted by Coach Jay Norvell when he took over the program this year. You'll be able to meet and listen to Coach Norvell at one of just four 2017 Gritiron Lunches in our Valley Ballroom this coming Monday, October 23. Coach will go over his team’s obvious improvements over the course of the year, show and review the highlights of this Friday's home game against the Air Force Falcons and answer questions. The cost is just $20 for the buffet luncheon and the full program. Reservations are not necessary and we hope you can make it. The doors open at 11:45 AM and the coach will start his presentation at 12:15 PM.

Winter Clay Shoot - Signup Now
It's the most common three word sequence in Sporting Clays shooting: Pull, Bang, #&%@! You'll hear this often at our Winter Sporting Clays Shoot on the fourth weekend in February when participants will enjoy two days of sporting clays plus food and beverage functions, drawings, prizes and more. This is one of our most enjoyable events because it attracts shotgun enthusiasts of all levels, from those few who compete for the Top Gun prize to the many (dozens) recreational shooters or beginners who are assured a good time and also have a chance at winning money and, at least amongst those attending, a temporary and somewhat humored modicum of notoriety. The field is limited and entry forms are available now on our website. We sure hope you can make it!

Mostly Food – Mostly Sweets!
  • Today is Chocolate Cupcake Day. As luck would have it, earlier this week we brought back made-in-house cupcakes to Katie’s Bakery Counter and chocolate cupcakes are available for $1.99 each or four for $6. While the specific decorations and flavors change from time to time, chocolate cupcakes are a staple item. So, unless we happen to be out of them on a given day due to high demand (chocolate cupcakes are quite popular ya know) they’re waiting for you at Katie’s!
  • Tomorrow is National Seafood Bisque Day. That sounds like too broad of a term for us so we'll focus on just one seafood bisque: the Lobster Bisque in CV Steak! It’s rich and creamy with hints of brandy and sherry wine and it tops a list of impressive CV Steak appetizers which also includes French Onion Soup, Ahi Tuna, a Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, Escargot in Garlic Butter . . . There's more, but we’re sure you're starting to get the picture!
  • Friday is Waiter’s Day which is really a misnomer because, as you'll read if you click on the link, it was designed to honor both male and female "front of the house" food service personnel from maître d’s in fine restaurants to coffee shop baristas, from diner waitresses to cocktail bar mixologists and everyone in between. We've seen what these fine folks do firsthand and, frankly, we're glad we get to write this blog at our pace and not have to serve as the constant communications lightning rod between the customer and the folks in the back of the house. Please, if you're out dining or drinking on Friday, give a little extra “tip” of the hat to your servers, bus people, bartenders, etc.
  • Saturday is National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day. We haven't seen one at the Katie's Bakery Counter since about this time last year, so we checked with our Pastry Chef Tracy Miller and she said "very soon." When we pressed a little, she let it slip that she is shooting for November 1. Seems like cupcakes are the bakery's priority right now!
Football and Other Sports Info
  • Our Guys Picks: the boys went 3-3 this past weekend. Greg was 1-1 and this week he's going with the home team Colts at +3 against the Jaguars and the Patriots at -3½ hosting the Falcons. Alan wiped out at 0-2 so use caution in following his picks this week which are the Steelers at -6 against the Bengals and the 49ers at +6 versus the Cowboys. Mike nailed both his picks like a pro last week thanks to the spread and this week he’s going with over 56½ in the Colorado/Washington State game and Louisville at +6 ½ visiting Florida State.
  • Enjoy $2 Draft Beer during all Televised Pro and College football games at the CVI - and our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM is at $3,215 this week.
Last week all four prizes were claimed so this coming Monday we’re giving away $40 for each of the first three quarters and the final score . . . earn entries during live poker games ‘til all squares are claimed.
  • Place Your Bet: NBA Basketball started back up this week so that gets added to an already wide list of sports on which we are taking action: the Major League Baseball Playoffs, Pro and College Football, NHL Hockey, NBA Basketball, Horse Racing and the NASCAR Hollywood Casino 400 at the Kansas Speedway this Sunday. Some of the futures on the board include winners for the World Series, 2018 Super Bowl, 2018 NCAA Basketball and Football Championships, 2018 NBA Championship and 2018 NHL Stanley Cup.

Tyler Stafford tonight and Thursday, John Dawson Band Friday and Saturday, NFL Football on Sunday and Monday and Patrick Major Tuesday and Wednesday. Tyler Stafford has quickly become a staple in the Northern Nevada music scene.  The John Dawson Band entertains with a variety of modern country and classic rock.  Patrick Major has his own mix of original guitar and vocals combined with rock classics from the last four decades.  Scheduled start times for entertainment may be altered this week due to the Baseball Playoffs.

In the Casino

  • Penny Progressive:  The jackpot is now over $60,000.  The higher it gets, the more people play, the faster it climbs and someone at the CVI, Bodines Casino or Sharkey’s Casino will eventually win this jackpot ‘cause these are the only three places it can be won!!
  • Ladies’ Night Tonight:  Join us 5:30 to 8:30 PM tonight with a free Collapsible Strainer for the first 150 ladies and Bath & Body Works Gift Baskets as hot seat prizes. Also tonight: games, drink specials, FREE Bingo and a chance to earn entries for the October 25 drawings for a Free $500 Shopping Spree!

  • Our Friday special in CV Steak is Syrah Braised Bison Osso Buco for $34 (did you know that Ossobuco or osso buco is Italian for "bone with a hole?") Saturday night’s special is Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sunday's special is one pound of King Crab Legs for $32. These specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato – au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked – tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread.

College Football at the Inn, Uniforms Again this Weekend, A Chance for a Do-Over, More

This Past Weekend Over Take Tahoe
Many hundreds of incredible photos of the USAF Thunderbirds and other performers at the Aviation Roundup were posted on various Facebook pages and Community Forums over the last weekend. However, even the most credentialed local photographer didn't have the vantage point of the person with one of the coolest jobs in the world: the photojournalist assigned to the United States Air Force Thunderbirds team! The above picture is one of over a dozen Reno/Tahoe aerial shots in this posting on the Thunderbirds Facebook page.

College Football – So Many Games!
So Many College Games All at the Same Time!
Turns out there are 130 schools in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAAOn a weekend without byes, that means over 60 games could be going on, many at the same time. This can present two challenges to the average college football fan trying to watch at home: First, and this applies especially if you have action on a few different games: How do you keep track of multiple games at the same time? Fortunately, this is not a problem in our Cabaret lounge where we can be showing a dozen or more different games all happening simultaneously. You can easily watch four or five games at the same time, just depends on how fast your head turns and how quickly your brain keeps up!  Second, let’s say your favorite team is never on conventional TV or cable coverage. If the team you are following has a game available on our satellite service, we’ll do our best to get it on one of the Cabaret Bar TVs! Just check with the bartender and they will futz with the dial while you get started on a $2 draft beer (yes, that special deal is available during all televised college games as well as NFL games!) That same friendly bartender will be glad to order one or more of our Bar Bites for you to enjoy . . . . Just remember where you left your beer when you start scanning seven or eight different games on a Saturday afternoon!
Uniforms Galore This Saturday in Valley Ballroom
More Uniforms at CVI This Weekend for a Great Cause
There were lots of uniforms, flight suits and fit young military folks around the CVI last weekend with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, U.S. Army Golden Knights and the U.S. Navy and Canadian F-18 Tack Demo Teams all staying here for the Aviation Roundup. Expect to see even more of a variety of uniforms and some older and not-quite-as-trim folks at the CVI this Saturday night as Uniform Dress is the theme for this year's annual Bunko for Breast Cancer event in the Valley Ballroom. In addition to military you'll see law enforcement, firefighters, healthcare, construction workers and whatever else the participants' imaginations, creativity and available wardrobes can conjure up! Thanks to an impressive list of raffle prizes, an energetic and enthusiastic volunteer staff at GE, and a worthwhile cause, the event itself is sold out. However you can still help by donating an item or service to be auctioned during the evening (email bunko4breastcancer@ge.com right away) or by making a monetary donation online at www.carsontahoe.com/bunko.  100% of all funds raised at this event are donated to Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center enabling them to sponsor the Casting for Recovery Program as well as purchase mastectomy camisoles, wigs and many other medical necessities.

Food and the “Do Over” Concept
  • Today is Take Your Parents to Lunch Day.  We applaud the many folks we see in Katie's doing this on a frequent basis. For those of us who haven't thought of it in a while, whether it's today or you make plans to do so in the coming weeks, please take your parents to lunch. Naturally we hope you'll choose Katie's here at the Carson Valley Inn, the Jackpot Café in Sharkey's Casino or the restaurant in Bodines Casino.
  • Tomorrow is Pulled Pork Day.  The nice thing about a blog is we can stretch a little. So, while we don't offer pulled pork at CVI, we do at Bodines Casino for just $4.99 including slaw and fries. AND, while not pork, we do offer three different types of sliders on the Bar Bites menu at the Silver Dollar Bar in Sharkey's: Burger Sliders, Turkey Sliders, and Irish Sliders (corn beef). Try ‘em all!
  • Friday is World Egg Day.  Whether you like two eggs over easy or a build-it-yourself three egg omelet, Katie's and our sister properties offers a full variety of egg options with many breakfast items served 24 hours in Katie's. Other egg dishes: Eggs Benedict available at both CVI and Bodines plus the Benedict Bowl at Sharkey's Casino. All 3 properties serve French Toast which is dipped in an egg wash and CVI has the Monte Cristo which is also egg battered. Heck, some of our house-made pastries are also topped with a meringue topping!
  • Tuesday is Mulligan Day. The term started with the concept of taking a "do over" shot in golf  (read the PGA's explanation) but is now used in describing any kind of  do-over in life. So, take Tuesday to rekindle an old relationship, restart a hobby that faded away or face and tackle whatever you want to "do over."  Since we most often use the term Mulligan relating to golf around the CVI, here's a reminder that now is the time to be booking your group’s 2018 golf visit to stay at the Carson Valley Inn and play one or more of the many golf courses in our area. Just give Greg a call at 775-783-6615 and he’ll make it easy!  As to our favorite depiction of a Mulligan? It’s the movie The Best of Times with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. And there’s also the song Second Chance by 38 Special, one of the many groups who have appeared live in concert in TJ’s Corral.
Football and Other Sports Info
Enjoy a Bar Bite and $2 Draft While You Watch Football
  • Our Guys Picks: Greg reversed his previous week’s come back by going 0 -2 last week. This week he’s taking Navy at + 3.5 at Memphis and the Lions at +5 against the Saints.  Alan went 2 - 0 last week and this week likes the Jaguars at -2.5 hosting the Rams and Carolina at -3 against the Eagles. Mike split his picks last week and is especially proud of the Jets win over the Browns in what he referred to as “arguably the game of the day but nobody noticed or cared!” This week Mike likes the Niners at + 9.5 at Washington and Texas at +7.5 vs Oklahoma in the Red River shootout.
  • $2 Draft Beer during all Televised Pro and College football games at the CVI - and our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM is at $3,099 this week.
This coming Monday we’re giving away $93 for each of the first three quarters and the final score . . . earn entries during live poker games ‘til all squares are claimed.
  • Place Your Bet: We are taking action on the Major League Baseball Playoffs, Horse Racing, Pro and College Football, NHL Hockey and the NASCAR Alabama 500 at the Talladega Speedway this Sunday. Futures on the board include winners for the World Series, 2018 Super Bowl, 2018 NCAA Basketball and Football Championships, 2018 NBA Championship and 2018 NHL Stanley Cup.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge

Jets, Bunko, Pizza, Beer, Vodka, Football - Whew!

Aviation Roundup This Weekend
Looks like we’re in for perfect weather for the Aviation Roundup this Saturday and Sunday at the Minden Tahoe airport.  Plenty of free parking will be available with nine buses of varying sizes shuttling guests between the parking areas and the airshow gates. Over 80 vendors and static displays will provide plenty to see and experience. Some of the acts are low-flying and only visible if you’re up close . . . and the whole regalia of the Thunderbirds prior to takeoff is a show in itself which can only be viewed from the airport. Think about what it costs to take a family of four to Disneyland or a major league baseball game. The parking and tickets alone can set you back hundreds of dollars. The Aviation Roundup? Parking is free and a family of four with two adults and two teenagers is just $50 all in – even less if you buy your tickets online in advance (tickets also available at the gate). And our final thought to anyone who might be annoyed by the sounds of jets roaring around the Valley over the next few days: just keep in mind that those are the sounds of freedom!

Watch Out Here They Come

Bunko for Breast Cancer Sold Out, But . . .
While the Bunko for Breast Cancer event here at the CVI on October 14 is Sold Out, you can still help make a difference. Please consider donating an item or service to be auctioned during the evening by emailing bunko4breastcancer@ge.com. You can also make a monetary donation online at www.carsontahoe.com/bunko. 100% of all funds raised at this event are donated to Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center enabling them to sponsor the Casting for Recovery Program as well as purchase mastectomy camisoles, wigs and many other medical needs.

Food and Drink Stuff
Beef Tacos Basket and Fish Tacos Plate
  • Today is Vodka Day.  We definitely don’t have a shortage of choices here at the CVI bars – over 10 different vodkas last time we checked. The most popular? Depends which of our bartenders you ask. Some say Grey Goose, some say Absolute and some say it's Tito’s. In the process we did learn that both Tito’s and Smirnoff vodka are gluten-free (just thought we’d pass that along!)  And if you get a group of friends together and consume a whole bottle of vodka, don’t throw that bottle away . . . use it in a creative way to celebrate Ship in a Bottle Day, also today!
  • Today is also National Taco Day and we have a couple of different ways you can mark the occasion at the CVI. In Katie’s, we serve our Fish Tacos Plate with two softshell tacos, tangy slaw, rice and refried beans for just $7.99. And if you’re in the Cabaret Lounge, ask the bartender to order you one of our Two Beef Tacos Bar Bites for just $3.99.
  • Monday is Beer and Pizza Day. While this combination is equally enjoyable any day of the week, here’s a way to make it even more attractive: every Friday and Saturday from 8:30 PM to midnight at Bodines Casino, small pizzas are just $5 and pitchers of beer are just $5. Add ‘em together and you have the perfect $10 celebration of pizza and beer! And remember, all Bodines pizzas are hand tossed, made to order, and cooked in Bodines’ special high-heat pizza oven!
Pizza & Beer Day is Monday
