Don’t Be Scared, Set Your Clock,
Come to Work for Us!
Actually, the actions mentioned in the headline don’t directly relate to each other – but they each independently relate to the CVI!!
  • Thursday is our annual Employee Halloween Costume Contest. So Don’t Be Scared if the food server, bartender, guest services person or anyone else working at the CVI appears just a little unusual or out of normal character. He or she is just having a little fun and is also “in the hunt” for some cash prizes!
  • Sunday gets stretched out by 4% when we set our clocks back an hour at 2 AM. Just our way of reminding you to do the same on those many watches, clocks (don’t forget the vehicles), and appliances that don’t share the “smart” technology of our phones and computers. How did this all start? How is it correctly spelled? Get all the info here.
  • When you wake up on Monday after that theoretical additional hour of sleep, jump into Job Action Day by checking out the available positions at the Carson Valley Inn, Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino. We have a few positions posted that don’t come up too often and we make it easy for you to apply online!
Poker Room Tournament of Champions
Here's a special bonus for the winner of our daily Opening Shootout during November and December: Each day's winner earns a spot in our $400 winner-take-all Shootout Tournament of Champions on Monday, January 6!  After you’ve qualified once, any future “wins” in the daily Shoot Out gains you an extra $100 to your starting chip stack in the Tournament of Champions. Complete guidelines are posted in the Poker Room.  Our Noon Shootout Hold’em Tournaments kick off the poker room action every Tuesday – Saturday. The buy in is just $25, no add-ons and winner takes the pot! For more on the CVI Poker Room ongoing featured games, tournaments, and promotions, click here.

From the Sports & Race Book
  • Breeders’ Cup Weekend: Second only to the Kentucky Derby in popularity amongst our Race Book fans, this weekend’s Breeders Cup offers $28 Million in prizes over the 14 races on Friday and Saturday. The $6 million Longines Classic caps the weekend on Saturday at 5:44 PDT. Among the “Classic” entries is McKinzie, the 4-year-old colt owned by CVI’s owner Mike Pegram. For a quick-read on McKinzie's racing history namesake and special tie to trainer Bob Baffert, check this article by Jay Privman in DFR.
  • Sports Book Mike’s Musings:
    • NFL favorites went 8-7 against the spread last week. Two of the dogs won.
    • The big topic of debate on Monday: Sanchez butt fumble or Mayfield shovel pass? The Butt fumble from 2015 is probably more entertaining, while last Sunday’s shovel has more of a "what the heck was that" shock value.  Definitely worth checking out both plays and drawing your own conclusion. Interestingly, both plays were against the same opponent.
    • At the moment, the College football playoffs looks to be Clemson, Alabama, LSU and the Big 10 Champs.  Hard to see SMU, the Big 12 or Pac 12 jumping past the Alabama/LSU loser.  Please note: this year's “game of the century” (LSU at Alabama) is Saturday, Nov 9th.
    • Our Pro Pick’em Progressive Jackpot is at $3,580 this week. Pick all 15 NFL winners on our weekly $5 Parlay Card and it’s yours. Each week it is not “hit,” the jackpot climbs based on the collective contest play at the CVI, Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino.
  • Football Extras:
    • $2 Coors Light draft at the Casino Bar or in the Cabaret Lounge during all televised NFL and College Games.
    • A couple of Free NFL Hats given away for each of the teams playing every Monday Night Football Game.
    • Bar Snacks Delivered to Your Seat while you watch or play. Get the full menu and pricing at this link!
    • Poker Room Squares Pool: Earn squares as you play in live poker games during the week. Each week we kick in $160 and the payout is on the Monday Night Football Game – $40 to the winners of the first three quarters and the final score. Any unclaimed quarters roll to the next week and for the November 4 Cowboys/Giants game it’s at 85 a quarter!!
  • Seasonal Action on the board includes NFL and NCAA Football, Game 7 of the World Series, NBA Basketball, NHL Hockey, Canadian Football (week 21 of 21), Horse Racing and this Sunday’s NASCAR Monster Energy Series AAA Texas 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway.
  • Futures Bets on the board include: 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup, 2020 NCAA Football Championship, 2020 Super Bowl, 2020 NCAA College Basketball, 2020 NBA Championship and 2020 Stanley Cup.

Order Your Thanksgiving Dinner to Go, Craft Fair This Weekend, More from the Carson Valley Inn

Our Thanksgiving Dinner To Go for up to 10 People
Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner to Go
What’s Included, How to Order
We’re offering a Thanksgiving Dinner to Go for Up to Ten again this year and orders are being taken now. CVI Executive Chef Andy Bouchard has made the holiday-at-home meal an even better experience for 2019. According to Chef Andy, “In previous years we served the turkey whole which still left our customers with a lot of work to do at home and a mess to clean up. This year we’ll start with a 20 - 22 pound bird but the turkey will be deboned and the white meat and dark meat cooked separately. This allows us to cook the breast faster to enhance the moisture of the white meat. We’ll marinate the legs with spices and seasonings overnight and then cook it slowly for maximum flavor. By us deboning the legs you will enjoy the dark meat with no cartilage.”  The turkey will be presented pre-sliced in an aluminum roasting pan.
Traditional side dishes include mashed potatoes, stuffing, giblet gravy, green beans amandine, cranberry sauce, a pumpkin pie, rolls and butter all for just $99.00 plus tax. An optional side dish of yams is $13.99. Orders may be placed at the Katie's cashier counter or call 775-783-6664 and ask for the Katie's supervisor. Pick up is between 9 AM and noon on Thanksgiving Day. All items will be pre-cooked and packaged in oven-ready roasting pans ready to heat per the provided instructions (allow an hour for heating at home). The only “pot or pan” you’ll need is a saucepan or microwave container to heat the gravy!  This no-waste, less-fuss approach is perfect for those who prefer to enjoy Thanksgiving in a home environment but don’t want the full load of preparing dinner from scratch and all the associated clean-up.

Comedian Spotlight – Kris Tinkle
Four accomplished comedians are entertaining in the CVI Valley Ballroom on Saturday, November 23 and we’ll be spotlighting each of these talented make-you-laugh entertainers in our weekly blog prior to show date. The Stand-Up Comedy Show includes Brian Lee, Carlos Rodriguez, Kris Tinkle and Key Lewis . . . and this week, Kris is in our spotlight! Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online or at the Carson Valley Inn hotel desk.  The show starts at 8:00 pm and is for audiences 21 or over.
Comedian Kris Tinkle has become a regular on the New York City stand-up scene since beginning his career in San Francisco. He was the co-host and resident comedian on Comedy by Request on SiriusXM Raw Dog.  As a touring comedian, Kris has traveled to nearly every state and performed festivals and multiple USO tours in Iraq, Kuwait and Japan for the U.S military. He has been seen on ‘Live at Gotham’ and most recently recorded his set for virtual reality in New York for OCULUS TV. Just One - OK Maybe Two - 'Cause the Holidays are Coming
It's All About Food (and Beer)
  • Today is National Boston Crème Pie Day. With the holidays coming up we want you to go “lite,” so just have one of our Mini Boston Cream Pie’s available at the Katie’s Bakery Counter.
  • Thursday is National Food Day. This one is supposedly to get us to eat healthier than normal so read about it if you wish. For those who lean in the opposite direction Friday is National Greasy Food Day which we are convinced comes right after National Food Day to provide proper dietary balance!
  • Saturday is National Pumpkin Pie Day so we are bringing Pumpkin Pie back to our Katie’s Bakery Counter this Friday (a day early just to be sure) for “the season!” And in the spirit of this “Superfood” you'll also find Pumpkin Cheesecake on the list of scrumptious offerings.
  • Sunday is National American Beer Day. We have this one well covered whether it’s your favorite draft or bottled beer at the Casino Bar or CV Steak Bar; bottled beers in Job’s Perk; or a 6-pack, 12-pack or case at the Carson Valley Market between the Hotel and the Motor Lodge:

From the Sports & Race Book
  • Sports Book Mike’s Musings:
    • As Long as the Broom doesn’t come out: Barring one of the teams sweeping the World Series, this Sunday will be "Sports Equinox," the only day of the year on which all four major Pro Sports will have games going on! Anyone care to play a 4-team parlay with a game on each major pro sport?
    • Favorites went 9-5 against the spread, with 3 dogs winning.  The real dogs were the 3 prime-time games this week: the Chiefs, Cowboys and Patriots romped to easy victories.
    • Speaking of dogs, the Chargers really need to finally get rid of Norv Turner.  Oh wait, they did that 7 years ago. Never mind.
    • There's a couple of good matchups this week in College: Auburn at LSU and Wisconsin at Ohio State.  Both games have double digit spreads and look to be high scoring affairs.
  • Our Pro Pick’em Progressive Jackpot is at $3,440 this week. Pick all 15 NFL winners on our weekly $5 Parlay Card and it’s yours. Each week it is not “hit,” the jackpot climbs based on the collective contest play at the CVI, Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino.

Bunko, Crafts, Curves, Glitz, Doggies & Laughs - Plus More at the Carson Valley Inn

Comedian Carlos Rodriguez
Comedian Spotlight - November 23!
Four accomplished comedians are entertaining in the CVI Valley Ballroom on Saturday, November 23 and we’ll be spotlighting each of these talented make-you-laugh entertainers prior to show date. The Stand-Up Comedy Show includes Brian Lee, Carlos Rodriguez, Kris Tinkle and Key Lewis . . . and this week, Carlos is in our spotlight! Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at or at the Carson Valley Inn hotel desk.  The show starts at 8:00 pm and is for audiences 21 or over.
Carlos Rodriguez was “thrown” into comedy. Being brought up in a large family of characters he quickly became a fast-talking entertainer which eventually led him to comedy. When he takes the stage you see the inner child come out with all the passion, excitement and energy of a new performer coupled with the grace and comfort of a seasoned pro. Carlos brings a clever, silly and approachable voice to comedy. In a fun and relatable way his observational humor touches beyond daily occurrences to deep rooted memories of his childhood, views on the simplest ideas and the most off beat subject matter. A regular at comedy clubs throughout the states, he has also headlined for our military troops overseas and been on stages on 4 different continents (Europe, Asia and Australia).  He was the winner of the 2012 CSA Comedy Competition and was a finalist in both the SF Tommy T's $20,000 competition and the 2014 and 2015 SF International Comedy Competition.

Frivolity and Fun This Saturday in Our Valley Ballroom

The
Versatility of Our Valley Ballroom!
How versatile is our Valley Ballroom? Check out this variety of activities coming up over the next six weekends:
  • The annual Bunko for Breast Cancer is this Saturday and if you happen to be walking by peek in, hold your ears and observe the frolicking definition of “too much fun!” . . .
  • The following weekend on October 24 - 26 the Valley Ballroom welcomes the annual Touch of Class boutique style craft show with all handmade products, no booths and central cashiers. More about this unique event in next week’s blog.
  • November 2 we go fancy when the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce 2019 Community Recognition Awards (aka “The Gala”) makes its annual visit. Fancy decorations, hand-passed hors d’oeuvres, a multi-course dinner and more!
  • On November 9 we bring out the runway for the Silver State Curvy Queen Pageant- an inclusive pageant competition that encourages body positivity.
  • A week later on November 16 we welcome the Strutts for Mutts 1st Annual Doggie Show produced by Animal Rescue Relay. This one has a dinner, music, silent auction, entertainment, Doggie Fashion Show and more!
  • Finally (for now), it's Live Comedy (see article above) on November 23!
Coming Soon to Our Valley Ballroom!
Whatever your event or occasion, we can probably make it work in our Valley Ballroom. Just give Carrie a call at 775-783-6673 and she’ll help you find a date and get it planned!!

Food Excuses . . . If You Really Need Some!
  • Today is Take Your Parents to Lunch Day. The supposed "purpose" is for children to bring their parents to the school cafeteria for lunch. Nice concept and we hope lots of kids do so. Our take: We're all kids at heart so assuming your school days are behind you, bring your parents  or grandparents to lunch in Katie's today - that has to count for something!
  • Thursday is also National Pasta Day. Ideal celebration - make your own pasta. A much less messy way is to enjoy one of these entrees in CV Steak: Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo, Mushroom Ravioli, Seafood Linguine or Spaghetti Pomodoro!
  • Let this anonymous quote help you shape, justify and enjoy your plans for the two "special days" that follow, "You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy chocolate, and that’s kinda the same thing."
    • Friday is Chocolate Cupcake Day. We bake 'em in house and sell them at the Katie's Bakery Counter. Caution: suggest you only eat one on Friday because on Sunday . . .
    • Sunday is Office Chocolate Day. Here’s the plan: sneak into the CVI on Sunday (or early Monday morning) and surprise your co-workers with an array of chocolate from the CVI!  We offer Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Cupcakes (oops – covered that above), Chocolate Crème Pie, Chocolate Fudge Cake, Mini German Chocolate Cake, Brownies . . . all baked in-house and available “to-go” at the Katie’s Bakery Counter. If you do come in Sunday evening (or any evening), chocolate urges are easily fulfilled with the Chocolate Lava Cake or Chocolate Mouse in CV Steak!
  • Saturday is Seafood Bisque Day. Back to CV Steak where we serve Classic Lobster Bisque!
Speaking of Food Excuses . . .
We wrote in last week’s blog that we’d have the details on our Thanksgiving Dinner to Go for Up to Ten in this week’s blog. We’ll, we didn’t make it! Not the way we like to do things but sometimes reality gets in the way of our best intentions. So, we PROMISE we’ll have it all for you next Wednesday, October 23 when our blog comes out at 7 AM!

Pat Benetar in the News

Kudos to Pat Benatar, 2019 TJ's Corral Artist, for her nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2020. The top vote-getters will be announced in January and inducted May 2, 2020 at a ceremony at Cleveland’s Public Hall.

From the Sports & Race Book
  • Sports Book Mike’s Musings:
    • The NFL favorites went 6-8 against the spread last week.  Six of the dogs won.
    • The Niners keep rolling, but the most surprising teams could be the Saints and Bills.  Most folks are aware of the Saints success since Drew Brees went out, but who knew the Bills are 4-1?!  Sure, they have that young quarterback, what's his name . . . but 4 and 1, wow!
    • The Redskins and Dolphins lived up to the hype. The Dolphins battled back by scoring two touchdowns in the 4th Qtr. The Fins could have kicked the extra point and tied the game near the end, but instead, came up just a bit short on their 2 point try.
    • The Eagles and Cowboys, on Sunday night, looks to be the game of the week.
    • With Sam Darnold's return elevating the Jets over the Cowboys last week, many have perked up their interest in this coming Monday's Jets-Patriots game. Also of interest: we have a Sam Darnold look-alike who comes into our Sports Book on occasion.
  • Our Pro Pick’em Progressive Jackpot is at $3,296 this week. Pick all 15 NFL winners on our weekly $5 Parlay Card and it’s yours. Each week it is not “hit,” the jackpot climbs based on the collective contest play at the CVI, Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino.
