Decades Returns, Camera Alert, A Unique Countdown, Doppelganger, more

Doppelganger - Tim Parsons at Tahoe Onstage used this most appropriate word in the headline of his story about how Roger Hegyi has become Willie Nelson. Roger brings Willie to life in his True Willie Band performance coming to our Valley Ballroom on Friday, February 10 with shows at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Camera Alert! You’ll see lots of cameras, tripods and warmly-dressed raptor enthusiasts around the Carson Valley Inn this weekend . .  they’re all part of the 250+ people participating in the annual Eagles and Agriculture event sponsored by the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and produced in cooperation with many of the Carson Valley ranchers and agriculture community

Some Pictures are Worth a 1,000+ Words:
No question the picture depicts the anticipation these five friends (Art, Dave, Craig, Dennis, Brandon) share about the CVI Sporting Clays Shooting Weekend coming up on February 23 – 25. There are other clusters of two, three, four or more people who also mark this event on their calendar and plan “life” around their annual visit to the CVI. However, this is the first time we’ve heard of someone actually setting up a countdown clock. And to show the lengths and imagination that people will use when expressing their love for this event, check the very top of the picture for a clue as to their resourcefulness in finding an “app!”  While we have a lot of repeat participants in this event, there are also quite a few new folks each year. If you have any interest in clay shooting, whatever your level of skill or luck, perhaps you'll establish your tradition next month . . . and start your countdown clock to 2018 a week later!

Our Hotel Entrance Early This Week
Haven't Seen this in a Few Years:
Mark Breedon, our Bell/Valet captain took this picture Monday morning after the most recent of a series of snowfalls in the Carson Valley. While quite picturesque and postcard-worthy, our engineering crew was on scene a few minutes later with our three plows, a number of shovels, and their usual fine dedication and hard work. Bottom line: as with all snowfalls - granted we don't get too many at our location - the parking lot was cleared quickly and as soon as the sun came out the "Nevada high-desert melt" finished the job making the CVI very accessible! We remain a great location to base for a ski visit: it’s a straight shot to Kirkwood on Highway 88 and to the Nevada side Heavenly lodges to our West.

Today is National Irish Coffee Day. We caught up with Jeff Wellman, long time (20+ years) CVI bartender a couple of days ago. It was a snowy day and we asked him to make an Irish Coffee for a picture. He said “I’ll do you one better, turn on that video camera and let’s show ‘em how we do it!”

Mini Chocolate Fudge Cakes

One Mighty Large Chocolate Cake - Inside and Out!
Friday is National Chocolate Cake Day so we wandered down to the bakery a few days ago and first caught the tray full of Mini Chocolate Fudge Cakes ($7.00, available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) just about ready to go up to the Katie’s Bakery Counter. We then came across Kristyna as she was putting the final topping decor on one of our full-size Chocolate Fudge Cakes ($20, available every day).

A Plateful!!
National Blueberry Pancake Day  is Saturday which is quite serendipitous because every Saturday we feature blueberry pancakes – with the blueberries baked in – for $4.99 in Katie’s. If you prefer your pancakes smothered in blueberries, come in today because every Wednesday we do blueberry topped pancakes for $4.99.

Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet the Super Bowl, NBA, College Basketball and NHL.  Also on the board: wager on who will win the NCAA Basketball Championship,  NBA Championship, NHL Stanley Cup and World Series. Coming soon: futures on the Masters and NASCAR.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive still has not had a winner so now we must give it away on Super Bowl Sunday or we’ll run amok of the Nevada Gaming Gods. Here’s the deal: We’ll have a Super Sunday $5 card out by this Saturday with 15 props on the February 5 game. Play as many cards as you wish and whoever gets the most out of 15 correct wins $5,000 with any ties split.  Someone will win – and the only “for sure” is that it will not be you if you don’t play a card!
  • Around the Sportsbook with Mike, Alan and Greg:
    • Last Week, 3-3:  Mike split on his “Killer P’s” (Pats at -5½ and Packers at +4).  Greg hit both the Patriots to cover and the over on the Pats-Steelers game at 51. Alan had reversed Greg’s picks so 0-2 for him.
    • This Week:  No picks this week so we are devoting our energy to following the #notmysuperbowl hashtag on Twitter.  Despite some serious begging from Hank at the CV Steak Bar (he’s a diehard Cheesehead) and Matt at the Casino Bar (Steelers to the end) we did not give them off on Super Bowl weekend so they could think about what might have been! We need them here to serve the $2 Draft Beer specials during the game!
    • So How Did it All Wind Up? We’re tallying it all up to see how our boys did since we started this weekly guessing game. Look for results next week.
Decades Thursday and Friday in the Cabaret Lounge
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Bill Wharton performs tonight, Decades entertains Thursday and Friday, Justin Lee returns Saturday, Tyler Stafford takes over for Sunday and Monday and Jamie Rollins appears next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Decades is one of our most popular groups with a vibrant and diverse act from Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars Uptown Funk. Decades’ 4-part harmonies and energized rhythm section truly shine when playing hits from the 1950's to today.  The quintet of former music majors from Chico State includes Samantha Francis (keyboard, harmonica, guitar, flute and vocals), Ben Ruttenberg (keyboards, guitar, vocals), Billy DiBono (drums, vocals), Will Watje (guitar, sax, vocals), and Tobias Brooks (bass, guitar, vocals). Justin Lee has gone from playing in a cover band with his buddies to performing on the same stage with acts such as The Band Perry, Parmalee and Jake Owen. An up-and-coming country artist, Justin has performed at ShipKicker in Long Beach and Night in the Country, Nevada’s largest country music festival.

Whiskey, Taxes, Eagles, Ducks and Pie!

A River of Whiskey at the CVI?
Whiskey River, On the Road Again, Always on My Mind, City of New Orleans, Good Hearted Woman, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys . . . these Willie Nelson hits and many more will fill your evening with Country and Western music history, nostalgia and joy in our Valley Ballroom on Friday, February 10.  Join us as the “True Willie Band,” the most authentic and convincing tribute act to Willie Nelson in America, performs in shows at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Also coming up:
Start on Your 2016 Taxes Yet?  We didn’t think so but that doesn’t mean we can’t get you thinking about it. And if your tax return includes the need for a Win-Loss Report from your gaming activities at the CVI, here’s a link to the Request Form which includes the three ways it can be submitted. Good time to include this reminder: we can only report what you won or lost while playing using your INN Club card, so be sure to use your card anytime you sit down at a slot machine or table game!

Upcoming Events at Carson Valley Inn:
The next two months bring a number of annual events and one of the many benefits of holding such events here at the Carson Valley Inn is we help get the word out. Be sure to check out the following:
  • Eagles and Agriculture, January 27 – 29: the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual celebration of the calving season and all the associated raptors it brings.
  • Ducks Unlimited, Saturday, February 11: the Carson Valley chapter presents its annual dinner to raise funds for conservation in Nevada.
  • Republican Lincoln-Reagan Dinner, February 12: a long-standing tradition held on the Sunday closest to Lincoln’s birthday each year.
  • Austin’s House Cowboy Mardi Gras, February 24: who would’ve ever thought mixing Cowboys and Mardi Gras would work - it sure does and it’s a big hit every year with all proceeds going to the Carson Valley Children’s Home.
  • CVI Sporting Clays Shooting Weekend, February 23 – 25: this one is not a fundraiser – it’s an all-out FUN raiser with a reception on Thursday, clay shooting Friday and Saturday and an awards banquet on Saturday night with a variety of prizes, surprises, drawings and the inevitable “stories.”
Pie, Not Pi.  Monday, January 23 is National Pie Day as promoted by the American Pie Council Day. Another one of those many national days providing with an opportunity to tempt you with the scrumptious selection of pies, cakes, cookies, brownies and other sweets at the Katie’s bakery counter . . . all fresh-made daily in our bakery! As for “Pi Day,” we’ll get back to you as it gets closer to mid-March!

Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet the NFL Conference Championship Games, NBA, College Basketball and NHL.  Also on the board: wager on who will win the Super Bowl (down to 4!), NCAA Basketball Championship,  NBA Championship, NHL Stanley Cup and World Series.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive made it through Divisional Championship Weekend without a winner so we have 15 props on this weekend’s Conference Championship games. Pocket $4,654 if you get ‘em all on the $5 card (play as many as you want). If no one “hits” it this week, then it’s all-in for the Super Bowl game . . . We’ll again have 15 props and whoever picks the most wins the pot with ties split.
  • Around the Sportsbook with Mike, Alan and Greg:
    • Last Week, 5-1:  The “boys” were feeling pretty good after this past weekend . . . darn near everyone else who placed a bet on the NFL games should also have been feeling good as “it wasn’t a good week for the Nevada sports books!” Mike and Alan both hit the Packers at +4½ over Dallas. Mike got the Steelers at + 1½ over the Chiefs and Alan missed with the Seahawks at +4½ over Atlanta. Greg hit both the “over” at 45 on the Patriots-Texans game and the “under” at 44 ½ on the Chiefs-Steelers game.
    • This Week:  Mike picked what he called the “Killer P’s,” the Patriots at -5½ and the Packers at +4.  Greg also likes the Patriots to cover and the over on the Pats-Steelers game at 51. Alan reversed Greg with the Steelers at +5½ and under the 51.  And what if the total for the Pats-Steelers game is exactly 51? If it happens, we’ll tell you how it works!

The Novelists in the Cabaret Lounge this Weekend
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Patrick Major performs tonight, The Novelists entertain Thursday, Friday and Saturday and Bill Wharton appears next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Equally comfortable acoustic or electric, The Novelists showcase cliffhanger storytelling, multiple lead singers and their signature four-part harmonies. In addition to a headlining gig at Dallas Cowboys Stadium, The Novelists have become a mainstay on the West Coast festival, college and house concert circuits. They’ve shared the stage with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, John Prine, and Daryl Stuermer (Genesis). The Novelists Acoustic Duo has made a couple of mid-week appearances in the Cabaret Lounge in the last few months . . . and based on their reception they are here for their first weekend visit with the full band.

Most Authentic Tribute Act to Willie Nelson in America at CVI

The True Willie Band
 in the Valley Ballroom
Mammas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys . . . We’re just kidding! Cowboys shaped the culture of the Carson Valley just as Willie Nelson shaped the culture of Country and Western music. And this iconic figure in American music history will come to life in our Valley Ballroom on February 10 when the “True Willie Band,” the most authentic and convincing tribute act to Willie Nelson in America, performs in shows at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Details are on our web site so, guys, bring your Good Hearted Woman and get into the Valentine’s Day spirit!

And don’t forget these concerts we announced last week:
  • Wynonna and the Big Noise Tour starts the TJ’s Corral concert season on Saturday night, April 29 and tickets are on sale now.
  • Marshall Tucker Band comes to TJ’s Corral on Friday night, July 28 with tickets on sale soon.
  • Thanks to our friends at Tahoe Onstage who covered the announcement of these two concerts in this article last week.
Ford or Chevy - Which Side Are You On?
Ford or Chevy – Hit our Penny Progressive Jackpot and Choose for Yourself!!
At a touch over $53,000 yesterday, our Penny Progressive Jackpot could easily bring a new car to the driveway of the next winner. Even if you pull out some of the money for taxes, you can still drive home a bargain on most of the cars covered in this article about the 13 Best Performance Cars for Less Than $50,000. Remember, this jackpot can only be won at CVI, Sharkey’s Casino or Bodines Casino. Our car of choice? Probably the Camaro SS or the Mustang GT  . . . but we’d hang on to our 4WD around here! Which of the 13 would you choose?

Pull, Bang, S%@&!  This is such a common sequence of three words during our Sporting Clays Shooting Weekend every year that we're including T-shirts with this phrase for those who participate in this event next month! It's quite an active weekend with a reception on Thursday, February 23, clay shooting Friday and Saturday, and an awards banquet on Saturday night with a variety of prizes, surprises, drawings and fun.

Relatively Unimportant but Fun (?):

Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet the NFL Divisional Playoff Games, NBA, College Basketball and NHL.  Also on the board: wager on who will win the Super Bowl, NCAA Basketball Championship,  NBA Championship, NHL Stanley Cup and World Series.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive survived Wild Card Weekend so it’s on to 15 props on this weekend’s NFL Divisional Championship games.  $4,556 is up for grabs if you get ‘em all on the $5 card (play as many as you want).
  • Around the Sportsbook with Mike, Alan and Greg:
    • Last Week, 2-4:  Mike split on the Giants-Packers game – he lost the Giants at +5 but got the “Over” at 44½.  Alan skunked again with the “Under” at 51½ on Alabama-Clemson and the Raiders at +3 ½ over the Texans. Greg split – got Clemson at +6 ½ and missed the Dolphins even at +10 over the Steelers.
    • This Week:  Mike and Alan both like the Packers at +4½ over Dallas. Continuing the underdog trend, Mike has the Steelers at + 1½ over the Chiefs and Alan has Seahawks at +4½ over Atlanta. Greg went a different route: he took the “over” at 45 on the Patriots-Texans game and the “under” at 44 ½ on the Chiefs-Steelers game.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  George Pickard performs tonight, Just Us entertains Thursday, Friday and Saturday and Patrick Major appears next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Just Us is a unique group of musicians who decided to blend together the sounds of the Motor City and Oakland, CA to develop "Sweet, Grown & Sexy" sounds – music from the 60’s to the present.  Aladdin handles lead vocal and percussions. He is joined by Les Carter on vocals and drums, Phil Weaver on vocals and guitar and Fred Williams on bass.

Two 2017 Concerts Announced, Aerial Video of 1997 Carson Valley Flood, More

Wynonna Kicks Off the TJ's Corral Concert Season!
And the First Outdoor Concert for 2017 Will Be . . . Wynonna Judd when she brings her Wynonna and the Big Noise Tour to TJ’s Corral on Saturday night, April 29! Check it out because tickets will be going on sale this Saturday morning. We’re also announcing one more of the concerts for the coming season – the Marshall Tucker Band will invade TJ’s Corral on Friday night, July 28. While we’re letting a few cats out of the bag, we’ll also be releasing details fairly soon about Mixed Martial Arts fights in TJ’s Corral on Saturday, July 1, 2017.

New Giveaways Started this Week: Our January casino promotions kicked in this week so we suggest you read through the In the Casino section below for the details on our Free Cash and Getaway Giveaways promotion, Cash Blast Giveaways on Wednesdays, a Coach grand prize for ladies night and more.

20 Years Ago – the Carson Valley Flood of 1997
It didn’t come without warning . . . the forecasters had one eye on the heavy snow-pack in the Sierra Range and the other on the Pineapple Express stretched out for over a thousand miles in the Pacific and heading right at us. There were emergency preparedness meetings and the TV weather reporters were not holding back in their prognostications . . . they talked not about what might come, but what would come. It all came down as predicted and the result . . . well the aerial video above – a 5 minute clip from a 75-minute video – tells it much better than the written word.  Thanks to Jeff McBryde and the many others who made this video possible. Remember those were the VHS days and thus the quality isn’t what it would be today . . . and it was before drones so an actual aircraft was used! The Flood Tapes were for sale in the CVI Gift Shop back then with all proceeds going to Douglas County Search and Rescue and the American Red Cross. Sorry, we don’t have any more and haven’t for years!

Eagles and Ag: All the activities are set and you can register online for the annual Eagles and Agriculture event coming up on January 27 – 29 with two of the key social/educational events and most tour departures here at the Carson Valley Inn.  Like the swallows are to Capistrano, the eagles (and other raptors) are to Carson Valley as they swoop in for the calving season. Details are available at this link.

New Katie’s Specials in January: Katie’s has a different special each day and there are a few new selections for January: Monday’s new special is Pork Chile Verde served with rice, refried beans and flour tortilla for $6.99. Tuesdays, enjoy Beef Stew in a Sourdough Bread Bowl for $6.99.  Italian Day continues on Wednesdays in Katie's with 3 specials at just $6.99. Thursday’s new special is Stuffed Pork Loin with mashed potatoes, pan gravy and vegetable for $6.99. Fridays and Saturdays, Katie's continues to offer a Roasted Prime Rib and Fried Shrimp Dinner special served with baked potato, vegetable and soup or salad for $14.99. The Monday through Saturday specials are available from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Katie’s long-running Sunday special is "The Chandler" Chicken Dinner including southern fried chicken with mashed potatoes and cole slaw for $5.99 served from 2 to 10 p.m..

Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet the NFL Wild Card Games, the NCAA Championship Game, NBA, College Basketball and NHL.  Also on the board: wager on who will win the Super Bowl, NBA Championship and NHL Stanley Cup.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive ended the regular NFL season at $4,493 so we conjured up a variety of 15 props on this weekend’s NFL Wild Card Games. Get ‘em all on the $5 card (play as many as you want) and the pot is yours!
  • Around the Sportsbook with Mike, Alan and Greg:
    • Last Week, 4-2:  Mike got ‘em both with Oklahoma State at +3 over Colorado and Clemson at +3 ½ over Ohio State. After two stellar weeks, Alan tanked losing both the Raiders to beat Denver and the Dolphins at +9 ½ over the Patriots. Greg squeaked in on the Giants at +8 over the Redskins and “called it” on the Falcons-Saints overs at 56!
    • This Week:  Mike likes the Giants at +5 over the Packers and the “Overs” at 44½ on the same game. Alan tabbed the “Unders” at 51½ on the Alabama- Clemson game and the Raiders at +3 ½ over the Texans. Greg is counting on two favorites, Clemson at +6 ½ over Alabama and the Dolphins at +10 over the Steelers.
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  The Novelists Acoustic Duo performs tonight, Justin Lee entertains Thursday, Friday and Saturday and George Pickard appears next Tuesday and Wednesday. Justin Lee burst onto the country music scene in 2015. The up-and-coming musician has gone from playing in a cover band with his buddies to performing on the same stage as acts like The Band Perry, Parmalee and Jake Owen. Justin has performed at ShipKicker in Long Beach and Night in the Country, Nevada’s largest country music festival. George Pickard co-wrote What Did You Do with Your Old Forty Fives for Bobby Vinton and backed up many acts from the fifties and sixties including The Shirelles, The Diamonds and The Platters. He was also one of the Kingsmen (Louie, Louie).
