Marshall Tucker Band Friday, $25,000 Guaranteed this Saturday

Notice we didn’t say “as much as $25,000” or “up to $25,000.” We’re talking a guaranteed $25,000 in cash and free play going out this Saturday between the Carson Valley Inn, Sharkey’s Casino, and Bodines Casino. It’s the wrap up of our Independence Cash Giveaways Promotion and here’s the breakout: $15,000 will be given away at CVI in drawings at 6 and 8 PM, another $5,000 goes out at Sharkey’s (drawings at 5 & 7 PM) and yet another $5,000 at Bodines (7 & 9 PM). If you’ve been using your player card during the month, and/or use it through the time of drawings, you are accumulating a drawing entry for every five points earned. What are the chances of you winning? Depends how many people show up and how many drawing tickets you have earned . . . but we'll keep drawing until all $25,000 of the cash and free play is distributed!

Upcoming TJ's Corral Events

  • Marshall Tucker Band Concert this Friday, July 28: One of their biggest hits “Heard It in a Love Song" (above video) was also recorded in the mid-2000s by another artist who has appeared here at the CVI in our Valley Ballroom. Can you name him? We’re predicting there will be a few general admission (standing or sit on the grass) tickets available at the door. However, just to be sure we suggest you buy your tickets in advance either online or at our hotel desk. As a reminder, gates open at 7:15 PM and the concert starts at 8 PM. Please leave folding chairs at home and same with the pets.
  • 33rd Birthday Celebration Blues, Brews & BBQ’s on Saturday, August 5: Admission is free for the Blues entertainment by Maxx Cabello, Jr., Alastair Greene and the Buddy Emmer Blues Band starting at 6 PM. We kick off the festivities at 5:30 PM with Free ice cream and fun for the kids, $1 Water and Soda, $1 Hot Dogs, $2 Pulled Pork Sandwiches with slaw, $2 Beer and $3 Wine. No tickets or reservations needed – just show up and enjoy!
  • Michael McDonald Concert on Friday, August 18: It was "months away" when we first announced this concert and each week we have watched the supply of available tickets dwindle. It was the same pattern with the Kenny Loggins concert which sold out and left a few people grumbling about waiting too long and not getting tickets. We’re not crying wolf, just suggesting the same pattern seems to be developing for Michael McDonald. Check it out and buy tickets here.
  • Ronnie Milsap Concert on Saturday, August 26: Yea we know that many of the younger country fans who've enjoyed concerts at TJ's Corral don't immediately "sync" with Ronnie Milsap. However, his music has inspired young country artists like multi-time Grammy award nominee Hunter Hayes as described in this Rolling Stone Article.  Milsap was the iconic country star from the mid-70s through the mid-80s and anyone who followed country back then will not want to miss this opportunity to enjoy dozens of Ronnie's hits . . .  and support the The Children's Cabinet to boot!
Why Do so Many Golf Groups Make CVI Their Headquarters? Consider this another chapter of “Sometimes Our Customers Tell it Better Than We Could Ever Write It.” Every golf group has someone in charge who gathers the participants, collects their money, figures out the format for their competition and generally “herds the cats.”  Many of our golf groups have been coming to the CVI for a number of years and, as life conditions dictate, sometimes the person in charge turns the duties over to successor. Here’s a verbatim note we received from Jim M. who is “retiring” after bringing a group to us every June for quite a long time and passing it on to someone new:
“Seventeen years leading an army on an attack on CVI and I can count the problems we faced on one hand not using my thumb! From management to housekeeping, the staff was friendly, helpful, competent, especially for our needs . . . Bill, Jacki, front desk staff, Katie’s breakfast staff and the catering staff that provided us with such great service each night, not only this year but every year. We could not ask for a better experience. Our job was easier because of the work you all did. We will not miss not doing what we had to do but we will miss working with you. A simple “thank you” does not adequately express our feelings.”
Jim paints the story of how we keep our golf groups coming back year after year by working with the person in charge to provide a memorable experience for the entire group – whether you're a cozy group of 8 people or a larger gathering of 150!  Are you part of a group of golfers who travel or would consider traveling? If so, contact Greg in our Sales Department at 775-783-6615 and he’ll walk you through how we can help make it happen for your group!

Rye Brothers and More Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
RYE Brothers tonight thru Saturday, Jonathon “JB” Barton Sunday and Monday and Bill Wharton Tuesday and Wednesday. The Rye Brothers are a “power-pop” country act, mixing contemporary country music and rock n’ roll guitar driven songs. Jonathon “JB” Barton’s love for a variety of musical styles is apparent in his selection of favorites from Van Morrison, CCR, Hank Williams, Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, Eagles and many more. Bill Wharton’s smooth, melodic tone comes out in his vast repertoire from old classic country thru modern country, pop to classic rock, blues and jazz.

Marshall Tucker Band Pulls in VERY Soon, More in CVI Blog

Remember When We Announced the First Few TJ’s Corral 2017 Concerts?
To us it seems like it wasn’t that long ago and now we only have four events remaining this year (actually five if you’re a sponsor for the Aviation Roundup in October.)

  • Next Up is the Marshall Tucker Band Concert on Friday, July 28 and that’s only about a week away. Thanks to some added capacity we mentioned last week, we still have tickets available . . . But not very many so we suggest you get them prior to the concert to ensure you get in on this one.
  • Brews, Blues & BBQ are in the TJ’s Corral spotlight on Saturday, August 5 for our 33rd Birthday Celebration.  Don’t be looking for ticket information on this one: the Blues entertainment by Maxx Cabello, Jr., Alastair Greene and the Buddy Emmer Blues Band is free! The fun starts at 5:30 PM with $2 Beer, $3 Wine, $1 Water and Soda plus $1 Hot Dogs and $2 Pulled Pork Sandwiches with slaw. The Blues start at 6 PM.
  • Remember Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers? So do we – and we can’t wait to re-live some of their hits at the Michael McDonald Concert on Friday, August 18. Michael followed his stints with these two iconic bands with a solo career equally as impressive. And for those of you who pondered our questions in last Wednesday’s blog: McDonald appeared at Morman Station in Genoa as part of the Sierra Starlight concert series in 2002.
  • Could TJ’s Corral’s Have a Grandfather? We admit that this one is a stretch, but follow along: while Ronnie Milsap hit his big breakthrough in the mid-1970s, he became a popular weekly attraction at the Memphis nightclub T.J.'s in the late 1960s after moving to Memphis, Tennessee. Seems somewhat ironic to us and perhaps he’ll talk about the “tie” while performing many of his #1 Hits at the Ronnie Milsap Concert on Saturday, August 26.
  • Back to the Hint at an October Event:  It’s true, there will be a special Sponsors and Performers Party for the Aviation Roundup in TJ’s Corral on Friday evening, October 8. Want to attend and get a chance to meet and mingle with members of the various acts including the US Air Force Thunderbirds, U.S. Army Golden Knights, The US Navy Tac Demo Team and others? Then become an Aviation Roundup sponsor! For more information call Bobbi at 775-782-9871.  And whatever you do, don’t miss the airshow itself . . . Click here for information on the various ticket programs and Flightline Lounge Packages.

Celebrating Food and Drink at the CVI:
  • Today is National Hot Dog DayGrab one in Job’s Perk – with or without chili, cheese or onions!
  • Saturday is National Crème Brûlée Day: and boy do we serve a spectacular crème brûlée in CV Steak. Our bakers whip up a combination of milk, sugar and egg yolks and cook it “low and slow” in a Bain Marie (think hot water bath) until it’s smooth and creamy. Your server in CV Steak adds a caramelized sugar topping just before you are served providing a special crunch.
  • Sunday is National Vanilla Ice Cream Day: we covered the ice cream topic head-on in our blog last week when we detailed how the Hoch Family Creamery makes our ice cream fresh each week.
  • Monday is National Tequila Day: We checked with Erin at our Cabaret Bar and, other than straight up, she recommends enjoying tequila in a Cadillac Margarita which she makes for us in the video above.
Patriotic Wine Walkers Will Be
Near and In Sharkey's Casino Thursday
Wine Walk Wobbles on Nomenclature:  While “Patriotic” is the theme for tomorrow’s Gardnerville Wine Walk that goes right by (and often through) Sharkey’s Casino, we don’t think what’s happening to this event’s name is very patriotic. Seems the name has to change next year because someone, somewhere, lays claim to the moniker they’ve used for almost 10 years. So, the folks at Main Street Gardnerville are looking for your opinion on what might make a good name for this ongoing oenophile onslaught (hey, there’s an idea!) that happens the third Thursday of the month May through September. Voice your opinion through this survey. And let’s not forget the most important part: whatever you call it, don’t miss tomorrow’s Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk (ha, we said it anyway!)

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Denver Saunders tonight and Thursday, The John Dawson Band Friday and Saturday and Jamie Rollins Sunday thru Tuesday.  Denver Saunders will have you dancing, laughing and singing along to a variety of tunes! The John Dawson Band entertains with a variety of modern country and classic rock. An upbeat and experienced entertainer, Jamie Rollins performs a variety of music from country to rock, to classic oldies and R&B – plus a few his own songs.

The Spinners Didn’t Disappoint!
Between their instant connection with the audience and their nonstop ability to entertain, The Spinners certainly didn’t disappoint the energetic crowd in TJ’s Corral last Saturday night. Once again, the story was captured accurately by our friends at Tahoe Onstage - click here for the first-hand review by Conrad Buedel.

What’s It Like Attending a Concert at TJ’s Corral?
Sometimes we fumble around trying to find new words to describe a promotion, food special or a venue . . . like TJ’s Corral. Turns out that when it comes to TJ’s, our customers are more than willing to weigh in with their thoughts in a manner that’s often better than anything we could write. Here are three reviews posted on the TJ’s Corral Facebook Page after The Spinners concert last Saturday. If you haven’t been to a concert in TJ’s, this will definitely give you a feel:
  •  “Always a great environment, friendly staff, and cold drinks, all around just a great place to let loose and have fun.”  - Ashley F.
  • “Outstanding venue, love it!! Very small and intimate place!” - Ernie M.
  • “We've been to a few concerts and have really enjoyed the small venue. Absolutely beautiful view of the mountains while listening to some great music!!” - Nikki S.
Our Remaining 2017 Concerts in TJ’s:
Do You Remember Last Time
He was in Carson Valley?
  • Marshall Tucker Band Concert on Friday, July 28. This one is just two weeks away and there are some seats available and now some General Admission tickets for standing or sitting on the grass. Stop by our hotel desk or jump on our website to buy tickets online.
  • Michael McDonald Concert on Friday, August 18.  Michael McDonald has appeared in the Carson Valley before - within 7 miles of the Carson Valley Inn. Do you remember where? When? What those concerts were called? Were you there? Let us know in the comments section below.
  • Ronnie Milsap Concert on Saturday, August 26. Ronnie had three dozen #1 hits on the Country Chart between 1974 and 1989 . . . if you were a country fan “back then” we’d like to know your favorite – use the comments section below. As a reminder, this concert is a benefit for The Children’s Cabinet
Celebrating Food at the CVI:
The Chocolate Part of Building
a Grand Marnier Cheesecake
  • Thursday is National French Fry Day. Putting aside all the technicalities of what actually constitutes a legitimate french fry, we have two special options: at the Jackpot Café in Sharkey’s Casino we offer special Sweet Potato Fries in addition to “regular” french fries. Up at the restaurant in Bodine’s Casino, Beer Battered Fries are the specialty. Options . . . Who can complain!
  • Friday is National Grand Marnier Day. We suggest the Grand Marnier Cheesecake in CV Steak. It’s a generous portion of Grand Marnier laced cheesecake in a graham cracker crust dunked in chocolate. Sounds good, huh!
  • Sunday is National Ice Cream Day but everyday should be National Ice Cream Day at the restaurants in CVI, Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. Here’s why: we have a special arrangement with Hoch Family Creamery located right here in Minden to make ice cream for our restaurants fresh every week. We place our order on Mondays: the product is made Tuesday, sets up on Wednesday and is delivered the next day. Enjoy!
  • Monday is National Get Out of the Doghouse Day. Depending how deep the hole you dug to get into the doghouse, you could always dig out with an overnight stay at the Carson Valley Inn (perhaps in a suite?) with dinner in CV Steak.
Upcoming Event Reminders:
  • Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk: Just put this on your calendar for now - it’s not until next Thursday, July 20. The theme is “Patriotic” so we wanted to get this information to you before you put away your Independence Day decorations. Next week - a controversy around the wine walks?
  • Summer Fun Clay Shoot: August 6 – 8.
  • 2017 Mixed Scramble: the second weekend in September.

The Spinners Saturday in TJ's Corral and Much More

The Spinners Concert is this Saturday! Their Top-5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1972 and 1980 included "I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love?", "Then Came You", "Games People Play", "The Rubberband Man", and two medleys; "Working My Way Back to You" / "Forgive Me, Girl" and "Cupid" / "I've Loved for a Long Time."  The Spinners have six Grammy nominations and have performed twice during the awards ceremony. Inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999, they have also been awarded the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Award for their contribution to the genre. The group has performed for presidents, received a star on the Hollywood “Walk of Fame,” and has appeared in numerous network and cable television specials paying tribute to the music of the 70’s. Today, this legendary R & B group maintains an active touring schedule, performing for fans of all ages and you can catch them live in TJ’s Corral this Saturday, July 8!

Our Remaining 2017 Concerts in TJ’s:

Shoot or Shot? We’ve Got Them Both!
  • Shoot: just a month to go until our Summer Fun Clay Shoot coming up August 6 – 8. This one is laid-back and there’s a lot of good-natured ribbing that goes on during the two days of sporting clays shooting with 150 targets each day at the private Carson Valley Clays Club and the Walker River Resort course. The gathering also includes an opening night reception and a family-style dinner and storytelling at the J T Basque Bar & Dining Room. Check here for the pricing and other details and join us!
  • Shot: We’re talking golf shots with our 2017 Mixed Scramble the second weekend in September. This one is also laid-back and fun for golfers of all levels. The Friday evening reception and blind draw starts quietly and builds to a roar as the teams are drawn, teammates meet each other and friendly bets are placed for the scramble on Saturday at the Genoa Lakes Ranch Course. An awards dinner wraps it up on Saturday night. Hope you can make it!

 Celebrating Food at the CVI:
Fried Chicken Day Thursday
  • Thursday is Fried Chicken Day. Our suggestion: skip the fried chicken on Thursday and wait for Sunday when we offer the Chandler’s Chicken Dinner Plate with mashed potatoes, gravy, coleslaw and a biscuit for just $5.99 in Katie’s. We still want you to  come to Katie’s on Thursday and you can keep it in the same “food family” by enjoying the Turkey Dinner Plate – just $6.99 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every Thursday in Katie’s. Just have to have fried chicken on a day other than Sunday? We have a Southern Fried Chicken Breasts (yep, there's two) Plate on the menu daily!
  • Friday is Chocolate Day. Can’t participate Friday? No problem, an internet search will turn up a handful of other chocolate related days. If you like chocolate, we know you don’t really need a reason. If it’s available you’ll eat it! And we do have plenty of chocolate options here at the Carson Valley Inn. Our favorites: the full or mini Chocolate Fudge Cake sold at Katie’s bakery counter and anything chocolate related on the CV Steak Dessert Menu!
  • Saturday is SCUD Day. We’re betting that over 90% of people who read this will either not know what it is or draw the wrong conclusions. Check it out!  Oh, and this one is not food related . . . more life related. But if you follow the advice, you’ll no doubt be in a better frame of mind to enjoy one of the food items covered in this section!
  • Saturday is National Chocolate with Almonds Day. Turns out none of our vast array of bakery products or desserts use the combination of chocolate and almonds. So, since we brought it up, we’re giving the staff in Job’s Perk a handful of chocolate bars with almonds and they are a gift from us for the first half-dozen folks who come in asking for one on Saturday. We hope you’ll buy something else while you’re in there, but it is certainly not required.
  • Tuesday is Blueberry Muffin Day. We make them fresh in our bakery and you can buy them either in Job’s Perk or Katie’s.

The Blues Monsters in the Cabaret Lounge
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:
Hans Eberbach tonight, The Blues Monsters Thursday thru Saturday, Paul Coverelli Sunday and Monday and Patrick Major Tuesday and Wednesday. The Blues Monsters is a popular red-hot rockin' blues band from the North Lake Tahoe and Reno area. The quartet performs a powerfully unique combination of R&B, funk, jazz, and Chicago-style blues. Whether paying respects to the masters of traditional blues, or rockin' out other tunes, The Blues Monsters get the whole house up and dancing! Paul Coverelli  displays exceptional versatility on hits from artists like The Beatles, Merle Haggard and Jimmy Buffet plus the sounds of jazz, blues and Latin. Paul tells us keyboardist Nancy Barker may be joining him for one or both of his nights. Patrick Major entertains with his own mix of original guitar and vocals combined with rock classics from the last four decades.

Chiefs vs. Patriots on Thursday, September 7!

  • Wednesday is Italian Day in Katie’s – three specials for $6.99 each served from 11 AM to 10 PM!
