Trace Adkins Saturday, Golf & Sporting Clays Events, More

Concert Musings

Trace this Saturday: We’d love to announce we found a way of putting more tickets up for sale, but every seat and standing room ticket has been sold. There is a slight possibility that a few tickets could be turned back at the last moment and be available for purchase at Will Call on concert night . . . but no guarantees. Thanks to everyone involved in helping us notch yet another “sold out” hole in our 2018 concert belt!

Creedence August 12: From Have You Seen the Rain to Who’ll Stop the Rain you’ll hear all the hits when Creedence Clearwater Revival founding members and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford lead Creedence Clearwater Revisited into TJ’s Corral on Sunday evening, August 12! Rooms are available that night in both our Hotel and Motor Lodge with rates starting at $99. Purchase concert tickets through our website which allows you to view the seating layout map and select your seat. You can also buy tickets in person at the Hotel Front Desk. Reservations for the Hotel, Motor Lodge and RV Park can be made on our website or by calling 775-783-6629.

Tidbits from Ted Concert Last Wednesday: Great crowd quite patriotically garbed, patient with the extra screening procedures and definitely in the Independence Day spirit! As always, a captured-the-feel wrap-up by Tahoe Onstage! We learned that “Ted Talk” can mean more than just watching 18 minute videos on YouTube! No complaints from people in seats about having a hard time hearing because people were visiting in the standing areas! Lots of reminders about first and second amendment rights! The song Stranglehold is appropriately named because Ted had a stranglehold on the audience until he played this hit! Of the 1500 patriotic hats we gave out to concertgoers, not a one was left behind when we cleaned up! Ted definitely knew how to pronounce Nevada!

From Muffins to Fritters!
  • Today is Blueberry Muffin Day. We whip them up in our bakery and serve them daily in Job’s Perk and Katie’s.
  • Friday is French Fries Day. Yep. Got ‘em in Katie’s and, so the story goes, you can get garlic fries by special request in CV Steak. And there is some irony that the next day, France plays in the World Cub finals, so let's call 'em “pommes frites” this year!
  • Friday is also Kebab Day. With no respect as to whether it meets the strict definition of a “kebab,” our vote goes straight to the Seafood Brochette entrée in CV Steak: skewered salmon, swordfish, halibut, scallops and shrimp served with a chili lime cilantro glace!
  • Saturday is Grand Marnier Day.  With all due respect to the mixed drinks made with Grand Marnier, and also to the relaxing powers of a straight snifter after dinner, our focus is on the Grand Marnier Cheesecake dessert served only in CV Steak.
  • Saturday is Pandemonium Day. Hope it doesn’t get quite to that level at the Trace Adkins Concert in TJ’s Saturday!
  • Monday is Fresh Spinach Day. Everyone needs an occasional day to tone down the calorie intake so order the Spinach Salad in Katie’s: Fresh spinach tossed with hard-boiled egg, bacon, diced red onion, mushrooms, Parmesan cheese and croutons served with raspberry vinaigrette! Want a little more protein? Add grilled chicken breast and you can still claim “I behaved today.”
  • Monday is Corn Fritters Day. No, we don’t have corn fritters but we have our viable alternative for offsetting the fresh spinach salad you had earlier trying to be good: enjoy an Apple Fritter - available daily in Job’s Perk!
High Score or Low Score
We Offer It Both Ways!
  • Looking to Shoot a Low Score? Then be sure to check out our Annual Mixed Scramble Golf Outing on the weekend after Labor Day. Whatever your level of golf talents, you’ll fit right in. A blind draw determines the teams for the Saturday tournament, you’re guaranteed to meet new friends who enjoy golf at some level, there are social functions on both Friday and Saturday nights and an optional practice round on Friday. This event is perfect for those who enjoy playing golf yet want the comfort of “acceptance” no matter what their level of play – either in general or on the  particular day of this tournament. For more information, click here to see the flyer with all the details.
  • Prefer to Aim for a High Score?  Our Summer Fun Sporting Clays coming up on August 5 – 7 could be right up your alley! There’s an opening reception at the CVI on Sunday night, two days chasing clay targets (Walker River Resort and Carson Valley Clays) and a final-night dinner at JT Basque Restaurant & Bar. All the details are in the flyer at this link.
In Our Restaurants
  • Wednesday is Italian Day in Katie’s – three specials for $6.99 each served from 11 AM to 10 PM! The Friday and Saturday night special in Katie’s is Roasted Prime Rib & Fried Shrimp for $14.99 served from 4 PM.
  • Thursday’s special in CV Steak is the CV Steak Mix Grill, a combination of our Filet Mignon, a Dijon and molasses Marinated Pork Tenderloin Medallion and Herb Marinated Lamb Chop for $26. This Friday it's Roasted Stuffed Quail with prosciutto, wild rice pilaf and plum port glaze for $28. Saturday night’s special is Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sunday's special is King Crab Legs for $28. These specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato – au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked – tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
RYE Brothers tonight through Saturday, John Palmore Sunday and Monday, and Jamie Rollins Tuesday and Wednesday.  The Rye Brothers are a “power-pop” country act, mixing contemporary country music and rock n’ roll guitar driven songs. The perfect cabaret lounge entertainment for Trace Adkins concert weekend! Musical director for the late "Louis Armstrong," John Palmore is an accomplished singer and keyboardist who has worked with Jackie Wilson, Mary Wells, ZZ Hill, Wilson Pickett, Joe Simon, Percy Sledge, The Platters and other "name" artists.  An upbeat and experienced entertainer, Jamie Rollins performs a variety of music from country to rock, to classic oldies and R&B – plus a few his own songs.

The Spinners Didn’t Disappoint!
Between their instant connection with the audience and their nonstop ability to entertain, The Spinners certainly didn’t disappoint the energetic crowd in TJ’s Corral last Saturday night. Once again, the story was captured accurately by our friends at Tahoe Onstage - click here for the first-hand review by Conrad Buedel.

What’s It Like Attending a Concert at TJ’s Corral?
Sometimes we fumble around trying to find new words to describe a promotion, food special or a venue . . . like TJ’s Corral. Turns out that when it comes to TJ’s, our customers are more than willing to weigh in with their thoughts in a manner that’s often better than anything we could write. Here are three reviews posted on the TJ’s Corral Facebook Page after The Spinners concert last Saturday. If you haven’t been to a concert in TJ’s, this will definitely give you a feel:
  •  “Always a great environment, friendly staff, and cold drinks, all around just a great place to let loose and have fun.”  - Ashley F.
  • “Outstanding venue, love it!! Very small and intimate place!” - Ernie M.
  • “We've been to a few concerts and have really enjoyed the small venue. Absolutely beautiful view of the mountains while listening to some great music!!” - Nikki S.
Our Remaining 2017 Concerts in TJ’s:
Do You Remember Last Time
He was in Carson Valley?
  • Marshall Tucker Band Concert on Friday, July 28. This one is just two weeks away and there are some seats available and now some General Admission tickets for standing or sitting on the grass. Stop by our hotel desk or jump on our website to buy tickets online.
  • Michael McDonald Concert on Friday, August 18.  Michael McDonald has appeared in the Carson Valley before - within 7 miles of the Carson Valley Inn. Do you remember where? When? What those concerts were called? Were you there? Let us know in the comments section below.
  • Ronnie Milsap Concert on Saturday, August 26. Ronnie had three dozen #1 hits on the Country Chart between 1974 and 1989 . . . if you were a country fan “back then” we’d like to know your favorite – use the comments section below. As a reminder, this concert is a benefit for The Children’s Cabinet
Celebrating Food at the CVI:
The Chocolate Part of Building
a Grand Marnier Cheesecake
  • Thursday is National French Fry Day. Putting aside all the technicalities of what actually constitutes a legitimate french fry, we have two special options: at the Jackpot Café in Sharkey’s Casino we offer special Sweet Potato Fries in addition to “regular” french fries. Up at the restaurant in Bodine’s Casino, Beer Battered Fries are the specialty. Options . . . Who can complain!
  • Friday is National Grand Marnier Day. We suggest the Grand Marnier Cheesecake in CV Steak. It’s a generous portion of Grand Marnier laced cheesecake in a graham cracker crust dunked in chocolate. Sounds good, huh!
  • Sunday is National Ice Cream Day but everyday should be National Ice Cream Day at the restaurants in CVI, Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. Here’s why: we have a special arrangement with Hoch Family Creamery located right here in Minden to make ice cream for our restaurants fresh every week. We place our order on Mondays: the product is made Tuesday, sets up on Wednesday and is delivered the next day. Enjoy!
  • Monday is National Get Out of the Doghouse Day. Depending how deep the hole you dug to get into the doghouse, you could always dig out with an overnight stay at the Carson Valley Inn (perhaps in a suite?) with dinner in CV Steak.
Upcoming Event Reminders:
  • Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk: Just put this on your calendar for now - it’s not until next Thursday, July 20. The theme is “Patriotic” so we wanted to get this information to you before you put away your Independence Day decorations. Next week - a controversy around the wine walks?
  • Summer Fun Clay Shoot: August 6 – 8.
  • 2017 Mixed Scramble: the second weekend in September.

MMA Saturday, More Concert News, Fall Golf Event, Blood Drive, More

MMA Ring - Viewing is Even Easier Outside!
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Saturday in TJ’s Corral
Over a dozen bouts are scheduled this Saturday with MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and Muay Thai (Thai boxing) all on the card. The doors open 7 PM and the first bout starts at 8 PM.  Dave Price of the Record Courier delved into the story again this past Sunday and he ties in George Foreman fighting at Caesar’s Tahoe in 1990 at the age of 41 with how local 5-foot-8 heavyweight J.D Adie will turn 40 seven days after his fight. Adie, known in the ring as "Wrecking Ball," will donate his ticket sales to local families fighting cancer. Long-time WFC Announcer and northern Nevada emcee and showman Dreu Muren will explain each bout before it starts. Click here for more tickets and more information.

The CVI's Joey Whitacre Talks About Saturday's MMA Event and Upcoming Concerts on Tahoe Tonight with Kristen Ferrall

The Spinners Concert on Saturday July 8: Henry Fambrough and four friends from a Detroit suburb started a band in 1954 and for five years, it was called the Domingoes. When they decided to rename the band, each member presented a suggestion. Bobby Smith, who restored cars as a hobby, came up with The Spinners, named for a Cadillac hubcap. The name stuck and the group went on to become a leading Motown sound of the seventies. Still performing with the group, Fambrough was recently interviewed by our friends at Tahoe Onstage and he discusses the old Apollo Theatre, scoring their first #1 Hit with Dionne Warwick, his “take” on rap and hip-hop and a myriad of other topics. The Spinners Concert hits the TJ’s Corral stage at 8 PM next Saturday, July 8 and tickets start at $39.

Ticket Situation on the Other Upcoming Concerts in TJ’s:
  • Marshall Tucker Band Concert on Friday, July 28. We’re not fans of “Hurry and get your tickets before they’re all gone” or other alarmist headlines. You've see the large crowds for some of the concerts in TJ's Corral. The Marshall Tucker Band Concert has less than 250 tickets left to sell. Draw your own conclusions!
  • Michael McDonald Concert on Friday, August 18.  This one’s now seven weeks away and when it starts getting “close” on tickets, we’ll come up with something clever to say.
  • Ronnie Milsap Concert on Saturday, August 26. At noon today, somehow magically, there will appear a link on the Ronnie Milsap Concert page that takes you to our ticket terms and then the ability to buy tickets for this concert. Have at it (starting at noon)! And when this one gets close, we’ll probably come up with some type of “play” on his hit "I Wouldn't Have Missed It for the World." One important item we missed in announcing this concert last week, this concert is a benefit for The Children’s Cabinet.

Donate Blood Here at CVI Today!
It’s not too late to donate blood today at the United Blood Services Northern Nevada All American Blood Drive in our west lot . . . that’s right along Hwy 395 near our big electronic sign.  The bloodmobiles will be here from 10 AM to 6 PM and by donating today you’re entered into a drawing for a Harley-Davidson® Iron 883 from Chester’s Reno Harley-Davidson®.

at 2016 CVI Mixed Scramble
Mixed Scramble
Our 2017 Mixed Scramble is the second weekend in September . . . that’s just ten weeks away and now is the time to “sign up!”  It’s definitely a Golf Party Weekend with a Friday evening reception and blind draw, a player-friendly scramble on Saturday at the Genoa Lakes Ranch Course and an awards dinner on Saturday night with prizes and often a few surprises! Please tell your friends, golfing associates, members of the golf clubs to which you belong, your club champion . . . plus your in-laws, bookie, ex-spouse, and hair stylist (they really have a knack for spreading the word)!  The more people who participate, the bigger the prize pool and the higher the level of fun, laughter and camaraderie. Hope you can make it!

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Steve Lord tonight, The VooDoo Cowboys, Thursday thru Saturday, Hans Eberbach Sunday through Wednesday. Playing together since 2009, the Voodoo Cowboys have appeared at most major casino venues in Nevada.  They are the life of the party with their dance-inducing, hard drivin' style whether playing country music (and not the cryin' in your beer stuff) or an impressive selection of classic rock ‘n’ roll. The group has rocked crowds around the world and has shared stages with such rock and country stars as David Nail, Little Texas, Ron Keel, Toby Keith and many more. Vocalist and songwriter Hans Eberbach has released a solo album, “Up Is The Only Way Out” and he also sings for Joy & Madness, an evolution of vintage soul sound with modern classic pop sensibilities. He also fronts his own band HANS! and the HOT MESS representing his original singer-songwriter-electronic soul work.

Free Concerts, Football Kicks Off, Meet Randy Houser

Free CVI Birthday Concert this Saturday:  A free TJ’s Corral concert by the Davisson Brothers Band highlights our 32nd Birthday Celebration this Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and the whole community is invited! We’ll be serving free popcorn and free ice cream from 6 to 7:30 and quenching your thirst with $2 water and sodas and $5 draft beer. Meanwhile in the casino, free cake and champagne will be served from 2 to 3 p.m., free birthday t-shirts will be distributed randomly during the day (while supplies last), INN Club members will earn 4X points all day and we’ll  have drawings for up to $5,000  at 2, 4, 6 and 8 p.m.  Continuing the flashback we started last week regarding 1984, the year the CVI opened:  The NCAA announced the expansion of their basketball tournament to 64 teams setting the stage for March Madness to grow to a legitimate three-week sports holiday. The LA Raiders (remember those days!) beat up on the Washington Redskins 38-9 in Super Bowl XVIII and Apple Computer unveiled its revolutionary Macintosh personal computer (remember those TV commercials). Among the “celebrities” born in 1984: Katy Perry, LeBron James, Khloe Kardasian, Scarlett Johansson and Prince Harry! Ronald Reagan was president and he carried 49 of the 50 states to get re-elected! The Supreme Court ruled that taping television shows at home on a VCR (In your 20s? Google it) did not violate copyright law. Grammys for 1984 included "Beat It" by Michael Jackson for Record of the Year, “Thriller” by Michael Jackson for Album of the Year and Sting’s "Every Breath You Take" for Song of the Year.

Minden Park Free Concerts are a Fun Time
Unauthorized Concert Friday Night: The Douglas County Parks & Rec Department's 2016 GE Family Concert Series concludes in Minden Park (two blocks from our front door) with "Foreigner Unauthorized" this Friday starting at 6:00 p.m.  As a major supporting sponsor of this series, we invite you to stop by the CVI for dinner or a drink before or after this free tribute to Foreigner - a chance to relive their many hits that shaped Rock music in the 70's, 80's & 90's!

Randy Houser Wraps the 2016 TJ’s Concert Season Sept. 8:
We’re getting Fired Up for the Randy Houser Concert in TJ’s Corral on Thursday, September 8 – the last TJ’s concert in our 2016 season. Tickets start at $59 and are available on our website, at the hotel desk, or by calling 775-783-6606. Want to chat with Randy up close at a private Meet & Greet before the concert on September 8? Be sure to follow our Facebook page for a special contest this week!

We Need a Few More Golfers
Need A Few More Eggs for this Scramble: Our Annual Mixed Scramble Golf Outing the weekend after Labor Day is almost here and we could use a few more participants. This event “works” only when we have a total number of players divisible by 4. When this math doesn’t work we have to run around and recruit a few of our staff members (What? Play golf instead of work?) So if you or any of your golfing friends are interested, check out all the details and then give Greg a call it 775-783-6615.

Flying Far For Football Frolic in Sydney
It’s Week Two and I’ve already logged 20,000 Miles! The 2016 college football season "kicks off" this Friday at 7 p.m. (ESPN) when the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and the California Golden Bears tangle in the 2016 College Football Sydney Cup at ANZ Stadium in Sydney, Australia.  The two teams will travel a total of over 25,000 miles getting to and from this season opener. With Hawaii playing the following weekend against Michigan in Ann Arbor when the rest of the NCAA schedule kicks in, the Rainbow Warriors will have logged over 20,000 miles before playing its first home game! Our Sports Book locations at the CVI, Sharkey's Casino, and Bodines Casino are all taking action on this Fridays NCAA game and all the college games for the full season kickoff on Labor Day weekend. This would be a good week to play your hunch on who will win the NCAA Football Championship . . . .the odds start changing after the first and second week of play.  Also on the board this week: Major League Baseball, Horseracing, Pre-Season NFL Football and Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 NASCAR Race.

Blood Drive at CVI Labor Day Friday
Heroes Remembered Blood Drive at CVI September 2: We’re not going to try to be “cute” on this one. When someone needs blood due to an accident, surgery or illness it’s not a laughing matter, it’s a matter of life or death. So, as we do a few times each year, we are partnering with United Blood Services for their Heroes Remembered Blood Drive which will take place in their large Bloodmobile buses parked in our West parking lot under the big marquee sign on Friday, September 2 from noon to 6 p.m. If you can help by donating a pint, please click on this link or call United Blood Services at 800-696-4484. Thanks!

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  John Palmore is on stage tonight, Just Us entertains Thursday thru Saturday, Justin Lee lands for one night on Sunday and Jonathon “JB” Barton plays Monday through Wednesday.  Just Us blends together the sounds of the Motor City and Oakland, CA to develop "Sweet, Grown & Sexy" sounds - music from the 60’s to the present.  Aladdin handles lead vocal and percussions. He is joined by Les Carter on vocals and drums, Phil Weaver on vocals and guitar and Fred Williams on bass. Justin Lee captivated the large crowd Cabaret lounge after the Eli Young band concert last Sunday with his country music covers and originals. Frankie Ballard Thursday, Mixed Scramble Golf, $2 Draft Beer, More

Frankie Ballard Concert Thursday: If last Saturday’s Granger Smith Concert was any predictor, our TJ’s Corral concert season is going to be a lively one . . . and it continues this Thursday with the Frankie Ballard Concert! The doors open at 7:15, the show starts at 8 PM and tickets are still available on our web site or at the Hotel Desk (775-783-6606): $33 for General Admission and the Party Pit and $39 for Reserved Seating.  Sarah Hauck from The Record Courier spoke to Frankie last week and posted her story for all to read . . . check it out and get a peek at what the TJ’s audience can expect on Thursday, what influenced Frankie’s music, when his next album will be released and more. And remember, “It All Started With a Beer” just ain’t about beer! There are more 2016 Concerts coming up in TJ’s Corral including The Oak Ridge Boys,  Clay Walker, The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards, The Eli Young Band and Randy Houser!

Mixed Scramble Golf Tournament Set: All the details are in place for our Annual Mixed Scramble Golf Outing on September 9 – 11, 2016. By far our most popular and well-attended golf event, the Mixed Scramble provides the opportunity for every level of golfer to participate – and even win a few bucks! We pick teams by blind draw at the Friday reception, play the tournament on Saturday, and celebrate with a banquet on Saturday night. Equally as much a social outing as a golf tournament, this event has been the basis for forming friendships and providing many fall Saturdays that definitely fit the “that was just too much fun!” category. Please get it on your calendar and check out all the details and download a registration form at this link.

Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: John Palmore entertains tonight, the Justin Lee Band makes a special one night appearance Thursday the Rick Hays & American Steel take the stage Friday and Saturday, and George Pickard returns Sunday through next Thursday. Justin Lee burst onto the country music scene with his self-titled EP release in April 2015.  The up-and-coming musician has gone from playing in a cover band with his buddies to performing on the same stage as acts like The Band Perry, Parmalee and Jake Owen. Justin has performed at ShipKicker in Long Beach and Night in the Country, Nevada’s largest country music festival. Rick Hays & American Steel has recorded and released two full CD’s (Who’s Your Cowboy Now and Nevadatude) and one EP (Forward). Rick is passionate about music and it is reflected in his work as a Singer/Songwriter, as well as an Arranger/Producer. His live performances create a contagious energy that can be heard, seen, and felt both physically and emotionally.  Rick describes his sound as “stretches from the Twang to the Bang,” so come on by and enjoy!
