Coach Polian at CVI, Could Job's Perk Influence the Election?, Sportsbook Picks, More

Blitz Lunch with Coach Polian Monday:
Nevada Wolf Pack football coach Brian Polian will be here at the CVI for one of his four 2016 Blitz Lunches on Monday, October 24 and all area Wolf Pack fans are invited to attend! Coach will be sharing information about the state of the Nevada football program and showing film from Nevada’s homecoming game this Saturday against the Wyoming Cowboys. His candor, openness and specialized game film combine for an interesting and enlightening program. The buffet lunch is $20 per person in the Valley Ballroom - the doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon. No advance reservations are necessary.

TG Sheppard in 3 Weeks:
T.G. Sheppard's first commercial album in over 13 years "Legendary Friends & Country Duets" was released about a year ago featuring duets with some of music's biggest icons. The four minute video above, shot during the recording of TG’s duet with the Oak Ridge Boys singing “Down On My Knees,”  includes a light-hearted exchange between TG and William Lee Golden of the Oaks bantering about which artist provokes the most back stage pass requests from the female fans! TG Sheppard and his special guest, wife Kelly Lang, returns for a special acoustic concert in the Valley Ballroom on Saturday night, November 12. Tickets are $25 and are available at the hotel desk or by calling 775-783-6606. A special 2-night hotel package is also available that includes tickets for TJ’s Concert. All the details are at this link.

Walk Inside to Influence Others' Opinions!
Could Job's Perk Influence the Upcoming Election?
It's a possibility . . . Follow through on our sometimes sketchy blog writers' logic: according to a study cited in this article, coffee can make one more susceptible to persuasion. Therefore, if you have a friend, relative or neighbor who doesn't lean the same way as you politically, whether about a candidate or an issue, offer to buy him or her a cup of coffee in Job's Perk. Use your friendliest and most gentle persuasion skills and you may just be successful. Do us a favor if you find this works: before the caffeine buzz wears off, drop a hint they spend a few minutes trying their luck in the casino – perhaps on the Penny Progressive. If they win, you’ll be the hero. If they don’t win, you can blame it on the coffee!

Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet the American League (Cleveland Indians vs. Toronto Bluejays) and National League (Chicago Cubs vs. Los Angeles Dodgers) Championship Series, NFL and NCAA Football, NBA Basketball (season starts Tuesday, October 25), NHL Hockey, the WNBA Finals (Minnesota Lynx vs. Los Angeles Sparks) and Sunday’s Alabama 500 NASCAR race.  Also on the board: futures bets on who will win the World Series, the NCAA Football Championship, the  Super Bowl and the 2017 NBA Championship.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $3368 – pick all 15 NFL games straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours!
  • Chatter Around the Sportsbook with Mike & Alan (where did Jim go?):
    • Last Week: Jim liked the Raiders at home against the Chiefs for last Sunday. They didn’t cover and they didn’t win so Jim got booted downstairs to the poker room because we just don’t stand for one of our guys getting a pick wrong! Mike said give the points and take these favorites – Nebraska over Indiana (they covered) and Florida to top Missouri (Florida covered twice over). Mike is now 4-0 over the last two weeks..
    • Mike looked closely at 13th ranked and undefeated West Virginia Mountaineers (-5½) hosting the 4-2 TCU Horned Frogs and he says take the favorite at home. He also espoused on his “when two less-than-stellar-teams play each other” theory that when there is a large point spread, usually take the underdog. So, he likes the 1-5 Buffalo Bulls to be to beat the spread against the favored-by-22 Northern Illinois Huskies (1-6). Alan, who jumped in for Jim, likes the “they are starting to come together” Kansas City Chiefs (-6½) to cover against the “my what a porous defense” New Orleans Saints.
A Few Tidbits:
  • She’s Coming Back so mark your certain-to-be-busy holiday calendar for Sister’s Christmas Catechism show on Thursday and Friday, December 1 and 2. Tickets are $22 and are available at the hotel desk or you can order by phone at 775-783-6606.
  • Thursday is Suspender’s Day (just try to buy ‘em around here!) which we share because it is the perfect questionably useful info for Information Overload Day on the same day. On a more pertinent tone, Thursday is also Waiter’s Day so if you’re dining in CV Steak or Katie’s, please give an extra nod of appreciation to your server as it often is a tough job.
  • Friday is Apple Day – think Apple Pie in Katie’s!!
  • Tuesday is World Pasta Day - not to be confused with National Pasta Day which was last Wednesday (we have no idea why they are not on the same day). Anyway, we suggest you satisfy your appetite without pasta on Tuesday and then get your pasta fix with one of Katie's Wednesday Italian Specials or stop by Sharkey’s on Thursday and enjoy the Chicken Primavera Pasta Special.
Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:
Patrick Major entertains tonight, The John Dawson Band is in Thursday through Saturday, we show NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and Bill Wharton performs next Tuesday and Wednesday. The John Dawson Band is a Reno based group of five fun-lovin' guys who just like to play music and entertain with a variety of modern country and classic rock. According to John, "the Washoe County Parole board took matters into their own hands on a wistful spring evening in 1999, and placed these 5 repeat offenders in a working band, demanding we concentrate on Country Music." The quintet includes Mitch (Lead Guitar), Brian (keys), J.B.  (Bass), Jhan (drums) and John Dawson (vocals and guitar). Six Figures for the Boys & Girls Club! Our sincere thanks to all of the sponsors, participants and volunteers connected with last weekend’s 6th Annual Mike Tice Charity Golf Tournament.  Your generosity coupled with a lot of friendly arm twisting by Coach Tice and a gracious matching donation from Mike Pegram resulted in over $140,000 being raised for the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada – Carson Valley Branch. The exact figure is still being tallied and half of the money raised this year will go toward what will eventually become a permanent Boys & Girls Club facility for the Carson Valley!

Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: Jonathon “JB” Barton entertains tonight, The Blues Monsters take the stage Thursday through Saturday, and Bill Wharton returns Sunday through next Wednesday! The Blues Monsters are a red-hot rockin' blues band performing a powerfully unique combination of R&B, funk, jazz, and Chicago-style blues. Party or Bid or Both – All for the Boys and Girls Club:
  • Activities start tomorrow for the 6th Annual Mike Tice Charity Golf Tournament for the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada with online bidding for the silent auction items. Among the items up for grabs are many autographed jerseys and balls and/or pucks from the NFL, NBA and NHL; VIP tickets and three nights’ accommodations for the 52nd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards; Box Seats for 6 people to the 2017 Kentucky Derby & Kentucky Oaks; two tickets to the Seahawks- 49ers game on September 25 in Seattle and much more. Previously limited to those who attended the evening functions, the auction will be live on this page starting Thursday for anyone who wants to bid. Be sure to check out the items and jump in quickly because most auction items close this Friday night. All auction proceeds go to the Boys & Girls Club Carson Valley Branch!
  • The Decades Concert and Dance Party is this Saturday, June 18 in TJ’s Corral and it's open to anyone who would like to trade a minimum $20 donation (we’ll take more!) to the Boys & Girls Club for a jammin’ rock n’ roll party. You can purchase tickets at the CVI Hotel Desk or simply show up on Saturday night and pay at the door. This is an informal opportunity to meet Coach Tice and some of the other Raider’s coaches who are accompanying him for the weekend’s activities . . . like Hall of Fame defensive back Rod Woodson and others!

Oak Ridge Boys Bringing Blake Shelton? Actually, there’s no truth to the rumor the Oak Ridge Boys are bringing Blake Shelton with them when they appear in TJ’s Corral on Saturday, June 25. However, Blake and the Oaks did team up a week ago on the CMT awards show and the above video is just full of fun . . . and you’ll see this same energetic enthusiasm during The Oak Ridge Boys Concert a week from Saturday. For an advance look at their concert, check this article posted by tahoeonstage.com.  We peeked at the ticket sales website just before posting this blog and the Oaks are definitely trending toward a sellout. Please don’t miss out - jump online or stop at our hotel desk and grab your tickets today! Additional 2016 Concerts coming up in TJ’s Corral include Clay Walker, The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards, The Eli Young Band and Randy Houser!

The Great Race - Half a Block from Sharkey's Sunday
Plenty to Do This Week Close to the CVI: If you’re staying at the Carson Valley Inn Hotel, Motor Lodge or RV Park this weekend – or just planning to pass through – and are looking for something to do, here are four opportunities close by:
Take A Ride - This Weekend!

  • Wine Walk: It’s a Pirate Theme for this week’s Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk in Gardnerville with Sharkey’s Casino in the heart of the action. The swashbuckling runs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Motown Sound: Nathan Owens Motown and Soul Review will fill Minden Park (two blocks from the CVI) this Friday starting at 6:30 p.m. in the continuation of the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department 2016 GE Summer Family Concert Series co-sponsored by the Town of Minden & Carson Valley Inn. It’s Free baby, Free!
  • Vintage Aircraft: Those authentic WW II aircraft preserved and displayed by the Collings Foundation will be at Minden-Tahoe Airport this Thursday afternoon through Sunday afternoon with plenty of opportunities to tour the aircraft (inside and out) and even take a ride! Included are a P-1 Mustang, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator and a B-25 Mitchell. Meanwhile click here for hours, tour times and ride arrangements!
  • Vintage Cars:  If surface transportation is more your style, then you’ll definitely want to check the vehicles – many older then World War II vintage – coming through the Carson Valley as part of The Great Race this Sunday. The activities of The Great Race Lunch Stop & Heritage Park Classic Car Show are all happening just across Highway 395 from Sharkey’s Casino.
Sports Challenge Result: Interestingly enough, none of the people who entered our Sports Challenge in last week’s blog got it 100% correct.  Turns out if one less stroke was taken by either of the two low finishers in the St. Jude Classic on Sunday, or if there had been one more run scored in major league baseball on Sunday, Marty Swindell of Folsom, CA would’ve nailed it. So, exercising our blog license of flexibility and fairness, we’re sending Marty a $50 dining certificate for CV Steak. Anyone who knows Marty, give him a call and tell him you’ll be glad to be his guest when he comes up to use it! Thanks to all who entered!

Free Live Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: Patrick Major entertains tonight, Armer & The Hot Dogs take the stage Thursday through Saturday, and Jonathon “JB” Barton returns Sunday through next Wednesday! Armer & The Hot Dogs have been playing live Rock & Roll all over the Northern Nevada and Northeastern California area since 1991. The group was originally put together as part of an off-shoot FM morning show band when Jake Armer was part of the KOZZ morning show team; Smith & Armer. Jake had said he wanted to find some of the best musicians in the area and call them The Hot Dogs to go along with the play on words of “Armer & The Hot Dogs.” Jake says; “We love to have fun and we put out a lot of energy. We want everyone in the house to have fun, too”…“In the immortal words of Stevie Ray; if the house is a Rockin’, don’t bother knockin’, just come on in!!” And, yes, we play that song, too. Pretty darn good I think…” Click here for the full lineup of June entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.

Just In – More Next Week:
  • Blood Drive: The Annual CVI Driving for Donors All American Hero Blood Drive is coming up on Friday, July 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can schedule your appointment on line now!
  • Band of the West Free Concert: The 562nd Air National Guard Band of the West Coast will present a free concert on Sunday evening, July 3 in TJ’s Corral. The Patriots in Blue Jazz Ensemble will perform first followed by a patriotic tribute by the entire Air National Guard Band of the West Coast Concert Band. Watch for all the details in next week’s blog.

Oak Ridge Boys Concert June 25, Sports Challenge, More

Frankie Ballard was a fan favorite at TJ's — especially female fans.
Photo: Tim Parsons / Tahoe Onstage
Frankie Ballard Concert Electric - Oak Ridge Boys Next:  Last week's Frankie Ballard concert was a rockin' country event that drew a great review from Tim Parsons at TahoeOnstage.com. Next up on our schedule is a special concert by Decades on June 18 with all proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, Carson Valley Branch. A week later The Oak Ridge Boys,  2015 inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame, swing their 2016 tour into TJ's Corral on Saturday, June 25 for a concert almost certain to sell out. Additional 2016 Concerts coming up in TJ’s Corral include Clay Walker, The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards, The Eli Young Band and Randy Houser!

Eli Young Band New Release this Friday: We love the sound of the Saltwater Gospel single being released by the Eli Young Band this Friday – their first single under a new deal with Valory Music Co.  The song “immediately transports the listener to their favorite beach, where the mystical power of the ocean melts away the troubles of everyday life — while connecting them to their own spirituality.” You can get a 26 second taste of this upbeat, toe-tapping country tune at this link. Then, be sure not to miss the The Eli Young Band Concert in TJ’s corral on Sunday, August 14 . . . tickets will be going on sale soon.

Dancing at 2015 Decades Party.
Coach Tice on Stage, Far Left
Mike Tice Charity Golf "Decades Party" is a Must!  The stage is set, the prizes have been arriving every day from around the country and soon the 6th Annual Mike Tice Charity Golf Tournament for the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada will be here . . . with Coach Tice, some of the other Oakland Raider coaches, and Mike's extended circle of friends taking over the CVI on Father's Day weekend.  Local participation has grown over the last few years and information is available for the Decades Concert on Saturday, June 18 in TJ’s Corral with an optional Spaghetti Dinner before the concert. While billed as a "concert" the appearance by Decades is more of a dance party with plenty of room for dancing, lots of visiting and singing along - if you wish - to classic oldies and current pop tunes! There are also one or two openings for the Charity Golf Tournament and Awards Dinner on Sunday, June 19. Buying tickets for the concert or getting involved in the golf tournament is easy at this link. If you have questions or want to donate or participate in a manner not covered, please call Katie Leao at (775) 882-8820.

An Unusual Sports Challenge – Just for Fun: here's a challenge for the sports fans who read our blog  . . . Send us an email (just click on the link) by 5:30 p.m. this Friday, June 10 with your guess . . . and be sure to clearly indicate your ranking order. We'll draw two names from those who guess correctly and award a $50 dining certificates for CV Steak to each. One entry per person or our blog cops will have you disqualified! Remember; rank them from the highest number to the lowest number. Any decisions necessary due to unusual circumstances in any of these events will be a the sole discretion of our Sports Book manager (he'll find out about this duty when he reads this!):

The doors open at 7:15, the show starts at 8 PM and tickets are still available on our web site or at the Hotel Desk (775-783-6606): $33 for General Admission and the Party Pit and $39 for Reserved Seating.  Sarah Hauck from The Record Courier spoke to Frankie last week and posted her story for all to read . . . check it out and get a peek at what the TJ’s audience can expect on Thursday, what influenced Frankie’s music, when his next album will be released and more. And remember, “It All Started With a Beer” just ain’t about beer! Mixed Scramble Golf Tournament Set: All the details are in place for our Annual Mixed Scramble Golf Outing on September 9 – 11, 2016. By far our most popular and well-attended golf event, the Mixed Scramble provides the opportunity for every level of golfer to participate – and even win a few bucks! We pick teams by blind draw at the Friday reception, play the tournament on Saturday, and celebrate with a banquet on Saturday night. Equally as much a social outing as a golf tournament, this event has been the basis for forming friendships and providing many fall Saturdays that definitely fit the “that was just too much fun!” category. Please get it on your calendar and check out all the details and download a registration form at this link.

Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: John Palmore entertains tonight, the Justin Lee Band makes a special one night appearance Thursday the Rick Hays & American Steel take the stage Friday and Saturday, and George Pickard returns Sunday through next Thursday. Justin Lee burst onto the country music scene with his self-titled EP release in April 2015.  The up-and-coming musician has gone from playing in a cover band with his buddies to performing on the same stage as acts like The Band Perry, Parmalee and Jake Owen. Justin has performed at ShipKicker in Long Beach and Night in the Country, Nevada’s largest country music festival. Rick Hays & American Steel has recorded and released two full CD’s (Who’s Your Cowboy Now and Nevadatude) and one EP (Forward). Rick is passionate about music and it is reflected in his work as a Singer/Songwriter, as well as an Arranger/Producer. His live performances create a contagious energy that can be heard, seen, and felt both physically and emotionally.  Rick describes his sound as “stretches from the Twang to the Bang,” so come on by and enjoy!
