19 Bottled Beers at Bodines, Over a Dozen at CVI &
Sharkey's, plenty of draft choices, what's that add up to?

Not Another Beer Day!! Not to be confused with International Beer Day (August 5) or National Beer Day (April 7), today is National Drink Beer Day. Turns out that according to one survey, beer is America’s #1 social drink of choice (can you guess what came in second?), Americans love domestic beer over imported beer by a 2-to-1 margin and some states are more prone than others to have beer as the top drink to enjoy with friends at a bar or other social venue. We started counting up how many different bottled beers and draft beers we have between our two bars at the Carson Valley Inn, the Silver Dollar Bar at Sharkey’s Casino and the Casino Bar and the Sports Bar at Bodines Casino and . . . . well the total was close to one of the numbers in this song!

Bunko for Breast Cancer is coming up Saturday, October 8 and we hope you’re planning to attend this jubilant event with eclectically costumed wanna-be-sports-stars in our Valley ballroom. More information is available on the Bunko for Breast Cancer Web Page or the Bunko for Breast Cancer Facebook PageHowever you choose to get the information, please do get involved in some form or another – All proceeds support the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center!

Friday night, Stanford (3-0) battles Washington (4-0), midday Saturday Wisconsin travels to Michigan (both 4-0) and Saturday evening Louisville takes on Clemson (both 4-0).  On the NFL front, the Raiders (2-1) continued to draw more interest (and more bets!) for their Sunday morning game against the undefeated Ravens. You can watch and bet these games plus many more here at the CVI.

Bunco, Football, Candy, Pennies, One Hit Wonders and More

Immediate Seating - Now at 3 Locations!
Penny Progressive Climbing Faster! “Old hat” to Carson Valley Inn players, we recently (like last week) linked our popular Penny Progressive to Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. Now 26 slots are feeding the jackpot which is naturally growing at a more rapid rate. Steve Forrester, our “Corporate” Slot Director (he hates it when we give him a title like that) jump-started the idea many months ago based upon comments from our Bodines and Sharkey’s customers who were nudging us with “hey, why can’t we get in on this penny progressive jackpot!?” Centered on the Triple Red Hot 7's theme – one of IGT's most popular games – the jackpot increases based on play. A max coin bet is 90 cents and hitting the jackpot can be a prize in the tens of thousands of dollars. Our last 2 winners have pocketed over $95,000 each . . . but don't wait ‘cause it's hit anywhere from $10,000 on up.  Could mean a new car, new boat, one heck of a new wardrobe or a closet full of expensive new shoes and even the closet remodeling necessary to make room!  Someone playing these machines at CVI, Bodines or Sharkey’s will win . . . it could be you!

Going Bonkers for
Bunko for Breast Cancer
It’s a Bird, It’s Plane It’s a . . . .Bunco? Pamela Litka is like Clark Kent. During the day, she's a mild-mannered Projects Quality Coordinator for the GE plant in Minden. After hours, she turns into a dynamic Bunko for Breast Cancer Volunteers Committee Lead (we’re not sure exactly what that means, but she is such dynamo when it comes to this event that the title must bestow super powers!) Pamela and a group of focused GE employee volunteers spearhead the Bunko for Breast Cancer evening at the Carson Valley Inn every October in our Valley Ballroom. This year it’s on Saturday, October 8. Over the years this event has raised well into six figures for breast cancer care in Northern Nevada.  This is not your normal fundraiser. It is a raucous five hours of 200+ costumed and screaming (mostly female) bunco players who raise more hell – and more money – than any other event that takes place in our Valley Ballroom all year. Oh, and why “bunko” in some cases and “bunco” in others? Guess you’ll just have to stop by on October 8 to find out!

Sports and Race Book:
  • This week you can bet Major League Baseball, Horseracing, NFL and NCAA Football, WNBA Playoffs and Sunday’s New England 300 NASCAR race. Also on the board: futures bets on who will win the World Series, 2016 Season NCAA Football Championship and the February, 2017 Super Bowl.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $2832 – pick all 15 NFL games straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours!
  • Chatter around the Sportsbook after last weekend’s NFL games: After getting shutout by the Niners in Week 1, the crew in our Sports Book said nobody could get up the gumption to place a bet on the Rams last week. Not only did the Rams cover against Seattle, they won outright! The early trend this week is that no one seems to be ready to bet on the Bears for their Sunday night game against Dallas. Just wondering if there will be a correlation!

No Dancing on the Bus, Please! Actually, we are all in favor of dancing on the bus because the shuttle service between the Carson Valley Inn and the Genoa Candy Dance this Saturday and Sunday is run by the Town of Genoa, not by us . . .  so “they” make the rules! Whether you choose to sit calmly or dance in the aisles, everything you want to know about the Candy Dance is at this link and we suggest you read the specific information about the shuttle at this link.

What - Only One? Sunday is One Hit Wonder Day celebrating those artists who had their one big song . . . and then faded away not to be heard from again. Anyone remember these one-hit wonders: “Come on Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners? How about “Who Let the Dogs out?” by the Baha Men? Or stretching back further, “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” by Steam?  And then there's the infamous "Macarena" by Los del Río – ranked the "#1 Greatest One-Hit Wonder of All Time" by VH1 in 2002. In next week’s blog we’ll announce a November appearance in the Valley Ballroom by a country artist who was on the opposite end of the hit spectrum – he had 15 #1 hits back in the seventies and eighties! Meanwhile, what were your favorite one-hit wonders? Let us know in the comments section below.

A Variety of Rock 'n' Roll, Country, Blues, R & B this Weekend!
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Eric Jensen entertains tonight,  the After Dark Band handles the weekend Thursday through Saturday, we show NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and John Palmore performs next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Guitarist Eric Jensen brings forth his many years of experience in jazz, rock, musical theater and comedy to present an evening of entertainment for audiences of all ages. The high energy of the After Dark Band will have you up and dancing and singing along with the guys! With a great variety of rock and roll, country, blues and R & B their “must not miss” show is filled with the songs you know and love and the energy of the group creates a party just waiting for you to join in. With Bernie DeLaCruz and Dave Vasquez on guitar, Dustin Taunton on bass, Don Peterson on drums and Scott Anderson on vocals this award winning band will get you rockin’!  Click here for the upcoming lineup of free entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.

Tailgate Package Giveaway, Christmas Eve, Masquerade and More

Hey Jessica - are you supposed to be sitting down on the job?
A Picture is Worth a 3-Dozen Beers! Last week we mentioned that every Monday three guests will be drawn at each or our three casinos to qualify for the Ultimate Tailgate Package we’ll be giving away at each location at Halftime of the last Monday Night Football game on December 19.  By last Friday, we learned two quick lessons. First, being generic sometimes prompts more questions than we anticipated. So, here are the details on what each package includes: two tickets to any Oakland Raiders (currently undefeated!) home game in 2017, a BBQ grill, a $50 Costco Gift Card, a Bud Light 5 x 5 Pop-Up Tent, a couple of cases of Bud Light, a case of Shock Top and assorted Bud & Bud Light promotional items.  Second, rather than bringing in a grammarian or linguistic connoisseur (both charge too much in our opinion), we will leave unsolved the mystery as to which of the following, in conversational terms, is more correct: Tail Gate Party or Tailgate Party. No matter how you choose to write it, don’t miss getting your name into the hat for the drawings!

Saturday is International Country Music Day. How many country artists can you name who have appeared in TJ's Corral in the last three years? How many country artists will be part of our concert schedule in 2017?  You really could come up with the answer to the first question by reading through all of our blogs for the last three years (please, don’t really do that!)  As for the answer to the second question . . .  as in the past, our blog readers will be the first to know when we start announcing our 2017 concert schedule – whether country or any other musical genre!!

“I feel like I’m 10 years old and it’s Christmas Eve!”
A message from the "Golf Gods!"
We just love it when a quote like the headline above lands in our lap and we don’t have to embellish it in any way.  September is a very busy month for golf groups staying at the Carson Valley Inn. Rick Morgan, general manager of Saddle Creek Resort in Copperopolis brings a group of close friends to the CVI every year for a long weekend of golf and fun – he’s been doing it for over 20 years. We ran into Rick when he arrived last Thursday and his exact words were “I look forward to this trip every year. When I get here, I feel like I’m 10 years old and it’s Christmas Eve!” Rick’s is just one of over 100 different groups of golfers to headquarter at the Carson Valley Inn each year for anywhere from 1 to 5 days of golf. Putting these trips together is our specialty and now is the time to be making your group’s travel plans for 2017. Give Greg Enholm a call at 775-783-6615 and he’ll walk you through a package to meet your needs. Greg can't guarantee that you'll feel like you're 10 years old, but he will do his best to make sure your group's visit will help you feel like it's Christmas Eve!

Hard to turn down a big draft
from this little devil!
Walk Don’t Run! Masquerade is the theme for tomorrow's final 2016 Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk in Gardnerville and Sharkey's Silver Dollar bar, right inside Sharkey's Hwy 395 entrance, is a perfect stop along the way. Sharkey's Jackpot Café is also good idea before or after the Wine Walk . . . some food in your system tends to absorb some of the wine or whatever other spirits you encounter along the way. That brings up another point: in dissecting the name Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk, note that the first word is Thirsty and the last word is Walk. Those are the two operative words so quench your Thirst with whatever you like – many choose one of the draft beers available at Sharkey’s Silver Dollar Bar – and be sure to Walk, leave the vehicular operation to the designated driver!

And the Winners Are: Another exciting Monthly Blackjack Tournament last night - always gets down to the final hands! Total money paid out was $1250 with Richard Leigh winning the $625 first place prize. David Bailey ($375 for second) and Richard Trott ($250 for third) rounded out the top three. Next tournament is October 11 and it's just $25 to get in!

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Tyler Stafford entertains tonight, The California Cowboys anchor the weekend Thursday through Saturday, we show NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and Eric Jensen plays next Tuesday and Wednesday. R. W. Smith and The California Cowboys deliver a powerful sound with the clear punch of tight three-part harmonies. Lead singer and songwriter, R.W. dances and jokes with the audience while delivering top billing entertainment. Together with drummer Hal Atkinson, guitar player Gary Potterton (producer of “Grandma got run over by a Reindeer”) and bass player Cary Atkinson; these fine musicians form one of California’s most successful country-western bands. The group has appeared on concert billings with such country favorites as Alabama, Big & Rich, Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard, Clint Black, George Jones, Joe Diffe, Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, The Bellamy Brothers, Restless Heart, Travis Tritt, Doug Stone, Alan Jackson, George Strait, and many other country stars. Click here for the upcoming lineup of free entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.

Live through this Saturday in our Cabaret Lounge - Free!
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  The Rye Brothers entertain tonight thru Saturday, NFL Football on the Big Screen is in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and Patrick Major plays next Tuesday and Wednesday.  The Rye Brothers are a “power-pop” country act, mixing contemporary country music and rock n’ roll guitar driven songs. The group is led by Paul Justin & Justin Foutz who trade off on the lead vocals and guitar licks. Paul and Justin formed Rye Brothers in the summer of 2015 and quickly added a solid rhythm section consisting of Jacob Delott (bass, backing vocals) and Jeff Sorenson (drums, backing vocals) to round out this Southern California based quartet. Click here for the upcoming lineup of free entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.

Thank You! Last Friday 48 local donors gave 57 units of blood at the Hero’s Remembered Blood Drive. Per the folks at United Blood Services, this was a fantastic turnout for a Friday of a 3-day weekend . . . and the donations resulted in much needed blood being available for Northern Nevada patients.  Couldn’t make it to donate last Friday? Or, perhaps you’ll be ready to donate again in a few months?  The next bloodmobile trek to CVI is on Friday, December 9 in conjunction with the annual KTVN Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive.
