Mother's Day Dining, Gift Idea and Hotel Package Plus Derby Time, Golf News & More

If Kenny’s Performance is Fitting for Kim,
Certainly Kenny’s Concert is a Fitting Gift
for your Wife or Mom!
As the story goes, Kanye West arranged to have Kenny G do a private performance (see picture above) for Kim Kardashian on Valentine's Day this year. It must be true because pictures, video and media stories about this are plentiful on the Internet (go ahead, Google it!)  While we can't guarantee a stage full of roses when Kenny G performs in TJ's Corral on June 8, we can guarantee that his performance will be most fitting (over-the-top??) as a Mother's Day gift for your wife, mother, mother-in-law, etc.  So grab a box of chocolates (we suggest the Chocolate Shoppe for locals), an appropriate number of Kenny G concert tickets, and present them on Sunday, May 12 – with or without an accompanying vase with one rose!

Our 2019 Concert Lineup includes Easton Corbin on May 24, Kenny G on June 8, Uncle Kracker on June 29, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on July 4, Dwight Yoakam (Standing Room Only) on July 26, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo on July 31, Martina McBride on August 4 and Loverboy on August 9.  For tickets, check this page on our website or stop by the hotel front desk. And be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Mother’s Day at the Inn
We'll be featuring our regular menus plus Mother’s Day specials in Katie's and CV Steak and a special two-night Mother’s Day weekend hotel package.
  • CV Steak is open for dinner on Mother's Day from 4:30PM. In addition to all regular CV Steak menu options, there are two Mother's Day dinner specials: Beef Wellington – a Filet of Beef and Mushroom Duxelle wrapped in Puff Pastry, for $35 and Seafood Bordelaise – a combination of Lobster, Scallop and Shrimp in a Demi Glaze Cabernet for $33. Both specials include CV Steak signature table-side tossed salad, sour dough baguette, creamery butter, and choice of house stuffed, baked or au gratin potatoes. For CV Steak reservations, call 775-783-6650. The Sunset Menu is not available on Mother's Day.
  • Katie's is open 24 hours and is serving a Crab Benedict Omelette on Mother’s Day from 7 to 11AM – a Crab, Spinach and Hollandaise Omelette served with Toast or an English Muffin and Crisp Hash Browns for $9.99. Katie’s Grilled Salmon Oscar is served from 11AM until 9PM on Mother’s Day – Salmon with Asparagus and Crab with Béarnaise Sauce and Rice Pilaf plus choice of soup or salad for $15.99.
  • Our Mother’s Day Weekend Hotel Package lets you make it a family celebration with mom, grandma or all your nearest and dearest with two nights’ accommodations over Mother’s Day Weekend plus a Chocolate Shoppe treat at check-in and dining credits for use in CV Steak, Katie’s or Job’s Perk.  Get all the details on our website or call Hotel Reservations at 775-783-6629 and ask about the Mother’s Day Package.

Not Our Usual Golf Group Dinner Picture!!
Two Aces & Steam Punk:
And It’s All About Golf!
While today is officially Golf Day and May is Golf Month, our golf season's festivities really kicked off in style this past weekend and whatever your level of play, you'll appreciate these stories:
  • The first story starts on Friday with the first round of our Spring Stag Golf Tournament with play at Genoa Lakes Ranch course. Between our Spring Stag, September Mixed Scramble and our Fall Stag that ran through the early 2000's we figure just these three events have produced over 18,000 rounds of golf since we started sponsoring our own golf tournaments in the mid-1980s. Best we can remember we've never had a hole-in-one in any of these events. Last Friday's opening round of our Spring Stag saw two: Jack Lerch from Oakdale, CA aced #8 at the Ranch Course and Ken Hengst from Milpitas, CA holed it off the tee on #16!
  • The second story from last weekend produced a most unusual sight at the Rogue Brotherhood Golf Group's spring trip dinner on Saturday night in our convention center. The group of mostly business owners from El Dorado County and the Sacramento area has been visiting the CVI twice a year for quite a few years. Over the last few years their wives and girlfriends have joined them on the Spring Trip (Fall Trip is for the guys) and they always have more fun than should be allowed! They have a theme each spring and, while always interesting, it's never been as visually unusual as last Saturday night's “Steam Punk” as you can see in the picture above.
  • Almost 100 golf groups of all sizes are scheduled to visit the Carson Valley Inn and play our area courses during the 2019 season. If you are already on our list, thank you! If you'd like to find out more about bringing your group to the CVI, contact our resident golf expert, Greg Enholm, PGA at 775-783-6615 or shoot him an email at grege@carsonvalleyinn.com. While we can't guarantee anyone in your group will get a hole-in-one, and you certainly don't need to theme your group's dinner, we will do our very best to make sure you have a darn good time!

What Diet?!
Sunday is No Diet Day. We couldn’t pass this one up so we checked with Chef Don in Katie’s and Chef Patrick in CV Steak to find out what they would choose if they were going to bust their diet for a day. Chef Don said he’d start with the Katie’s Chicken Fried Steak for breakfast – perhaps even with a side order of extra gravy! For lunch he’d dive into the deep fried Monte Cristo Sandwich. Chef Patrick had a little more difficult time coming up with a diet buster in CV Steak. When pressed, he settled on the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake as an appetizer, the BLT Salad and then the Chicken Alfredo as the entrée. However, he still wasn’t convinced this trio would bust anyone’s diet for the day!

Carson Valley Market Update
The remodeling of the Carson Valley Market is progressing rapidly and we are still looking at reopening by the end of next week. Reminder: The gas and diesel pumps are open for credit card and debit card purchases during construction.

Kentucky Derby in Weekend Spotlight
The Kentucky Derby headlines the action at our Sports and Race Book this week. We find that just about everyone who catches the race in our Cabaret Lounge has some type of action whether it’s a simple Win/Place/Show bet or a potentially much more lucrative Exacta or Trifecta wager. Also “On the Board” this week: Major League Baseball, NBA Basketball Playoffs, NHL Hockey Playoffs and Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Gander RV 400.  Futures bets include winners of the May 16 - 19 PGA Championship (Tiger was 8 to 1 last we looked), 2019 NBA Championship, 2019 Stanley Cup, the 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup, the 2019 World Series and the 2020 NCAA Football Championship! You can watch and bet horse racing every day of the year in our Cabaret Lounge and at Bodines Casino!

Which Witch is Which?
Which Witch? Which Wednesday?
This is a tale of two witches and two Wednesdays. Let’s start with the two witches pictured above. The one on the left is Julie and the one on the right is Kim. They’ve been witching it up the last few Ladies’ Nights in preparation for tonight’s Witch Hat Contest with a cauldron filled with five prizes!  So wear your witch’s hat to Ladies’ Night today starting at 5:30 PM and our judges will decide which witches win at 8 PM. First place is $100.00 Cash, second is $50.00 in FreePlay, and the third through fifth place prizes are special gift baskets. As for next Wednesday, our witches will be out riding their brooms so we’ll be taking a week off from Ladies’ Night so all can enjoy Halloween!

Spectacular Fall View at #7 Tee Box - Genoa Lakes
Golf in the Carson Valley – Plan Now for 2019
Almost 100 folks enjoyed two days of spectacular fall golf earlier this week during our annual “Golf Chairpersons’ Appreciation Event.”   You could be part of this complimentary event next year, here’s how: Dozens of golf groups visit the Carson Valley Inn each season to enjoy our area’s courses and various group food and beverage receptions and dinners. Each fall, we invite the gracious people who “chair” each event to join us in celebrating the year with a stress-free visit “on us!”  So, if you have a group of golfers – with as few as 8 to as many as 100+ – we’d like to share how we can package a golf visit for your group in 2019. We arrange the golf reservations, rooms and social functions . . . you gather the troops. To find out more, contact Greg Enholm in our Sales Department at 775-783-6615. He’ll walk you through the process, set up your group for a fun visit, and then make sure you are invited to our 2019 Appreciation Event next fall!

Christmas Gifts and Other Holiday Crafts
Abundance of Clever Crafts This Weekend
Almost 4,000 sq. ft. of handmade crafts and other gifts will be available in our Valley Ballroom this Thursday, Friday and Saturday when the A Touch of Class craft show returns for its 5th year at the Carson Valley Inn and 18th year overall. The holidays shopping weekend features 28-30 crafters . . . but no booths! This setup makes your shopping experience more like a boutique with central cashiers eliminating the need to make separate purchases from individual crafters. Come in and check it out from 10 AM to 8 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday!

Football and Other Sports at the Inn
  • Our Guys Picks!  A bit of a stumble last week, as the “team” only managed to pick one game correctly.  1-7 is probably their worst week ever.  So, will they stay in a slump or will the law of averages kick in?  Mike went with the meekest mascots last week: cute little golden gophers and a happy duck.  Both lost. This week, he’s going with the Killer Whales and the Godzillas. The next best thing is the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes -2½ hosting the Tulane Green Wave.  That is one (kind of an ugly green) wave against multiple Hurricanes.  Mike also likes the Washington State Cougars +3 on the road against the Stanford Cardinal.  It’s a color for goodness sake.  The cougars will run right past the dancing tree. Steve picked against his Saints again: The Vikings -1 at home.  He also likes the Steelers -8 at home against the Cleveland Browns.  They’ll have to avoid overtime in the rematch to cover the 8 points! Greg thinks both Bay area teams have turned the corner: he likes the 49’ers at the Phoenix Cardinals (pick-em), and the Raiders +3 hosting the Indianapolis Colts.  Alan decided to give serious consideration to his picks this week.  He was still calculating as we went to press.  He finally blurted out the Eagles -3 in London against the tanking Jacksonville Jaguars.  And he went with Florida +7 against the Georgia Bulldogs in the "world's largest outdoor cocktail party."  Given more time, he would have made 2 absolutely certain selections.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM failed to hit last week and inched up to $3,429 for this week . . . play a $5 card and it’s paid out to any to whoever picks all 15 games (any ties split).
  • Monday Night Football Poker Room Grid:  We had $112 carryover from this past Monday so the squares are worth $88 each for this coming Monday’s Bills/Patriots game. “The Grid” pays the first three quarters and the final score . . . you must be present to win and any unclaimed winnings roll to the following week. Check the details on this page.
  • Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI.
  • On The Board! This week you can bet NCAA and NFL Football, NHL Hockey, NBA Basketball, the World Series, Canadian Football League, the Sunday NASCAR First Data 500 (down to 8 drivers for the Monster Energy Cup) and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship, the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2019 Stanley Cup and the 2019 NBA Championship.
Just Gotta Mention These "Days"
  • Today is World Pasta Day, not to be confused with National Pasta Day which was last Wednesday. Since pasta is obviously the “message,” we will tempt you with the three most popular pasta dishes in CV Steak: The Seafood Linguini with shrimp, scallops and diced lobster; the Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo and the Mushroom Ravioli (served as an appetizer or entrée).
  • Friday is Pumpkin Day. Not that an excuse is needed, but if you want to show your support, you could always order a slice of pumpkin pie in Katie’s or take home a whole pumpkin pie from the Katie’s Bakery Counter!
  • Saturday is Cranky Coworker Day. Not a problem since the “crank” probably is off Saturdays!
  • Tuesday is Haunted Refrigerator Night,  supposedly “best celebrated by cleaning out the horrors that live deep within your icebox.” So, if someone invites you to celebrate this “holiday” with dinner at their house, immediately counter with an offer to buy them dinner in Katie’s or CV Steak!
This Week in the Casino
  • Ladies’ Night Tonight: Join us from 5:30 to 8:30 PM with a Free Chocolate Shoppe Gift and Manicure Set for the first 150 ladies and Chocolate Shoppe Presents as hot seat prizes.  Also tonight: the Witch Hat Contest mentioned above, games, raffles, a weekly drink special and free bingo for ladies playing in the pit or at slots.
  • Point Multipliers Friday: 4X Points on Reel Slots and Video Poker Slots all day every Friday in October. Watch those points add up fast and use them for dining, FreePlay, Katie’s Bakery products and more!
  • Giveaways Friday:  Join us at 5, 7 and 9 PM for our giveaway drawings for cash and FreePlay.
  • $55,000 Giveaways Promotion Grand Prize Drawings Saturday:  Join us at 6 and 8 PM at the CVI for Thirty (30) - $500 Winners (cash & FreePlay) Guaranteed between CVI and Sharkey’s (Sharkey’s drawings at 5 and 7 PM.)
  • Your Rewards Monday: INN Club members can swipe at the casino kiosk once on Monday for Your Reward. Could be FreePlay, a Free Food offer, a Free Multiplier or a Free Gift!
In Our Restaurants
  • Wednesday is Italian Day in Katie’s – three specials for $6.99 each served from 11 AM to 10 PM! Our Friday and Saturday night special in Katie’s is Roasted Prime Rib & Fried Shrimp for $14.99 served from 4 PM.
  • Thursday’s special in CV Steak is the CV Steak Mix Grill, a combination of our Filet Mignon, a Dijon and molasses Marinated Pork Tenderloin Medallion and Herb Marinated Lamb Chop for $26. This Friday it’s Syrah Braised Bison Osso Bucco slow-cooked with vegetables, wine, herbs and natural pan sauce; served with a potato cauliflower puree for $35.00. Saturday night’s special is Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sunday's special is King Crab Legs for $28. These specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato – au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked – tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Adam Donald tonight, Voodoo Cowboys Thursday - Saturday, NFL Football Sunday and Monday nights and Cliff & Dave next Tuesday and Wednesday. Adam Donald brings an upbeat and entertaining solo show with a heavy arsenal of songs mixing today’s hits with some old country favorites. Playing together since 2009, the Voodoo Cowboys are the life of the party with their dance-inducing, hard drivin' style whether playing country music (and not the cryin' in your beer stuff) or an impressive selection of classic rock ‘n’ roll. Cliff & Dave is powerhouse singer/gospel drummer Cliff Porter and southern-fried singer/guitarist Dave Berry, often seen fronting the band Jelly Bread. The Duo provides an evening of  sultry R&B, funk and swinging rock ’n’ roll.

Tailgate Package Giveaway, Christmas Eve, Masquerade and More

Hey Jessica - are you supposed to be sitting down on the job?
A Picture is Worth a 3-Dozen Beers! Last week we mentioned that every Monday three guests will be drawn at each or our three casinos to qualify for the Ultimate Tailgate Package we’ll be giving away at each location at Halftime of the last Monday Night Football game on December 19.  By last Friday, we learned two quick lessons. First, being generic sometimes prompts more questions than we anticipated. So, here are the details on what each package includes: two tickets to any Oakland Raiders (currently undefeated!) home game in 2017, a BBQ grill, a $50 Costco Gift Card, a Bud Light 5 x 5 Pop-Up Tent, a couple of cases of Bud Light, a case of Shock Top and assorted Bud & Bud Light promotional items.  Second, rather than bringing in a grammarian or linguistic connoisseur (both charge too much in our opinion), we will leave unsolved the mystery as to which of the following, in conversational terms, is more correct: Tail Gate Party or Tailgate Party. No matter how you choose to write it, don’t miss getting your name into the hat for the drawings!

Saturday is International Country Music Day. How many country artists can you name who have appeared in TJ's Corral in the last three years? How many country artists will be part of our concert schedule in 2017?  You really could come up with the answer to the first question by reading through all of our blogs for the last three years (please, don’t really do that!)  As for the answer to the second question . . .  as in the past, our blog readers will be the first to know when we start announcing our 2017 concert schedule – whether country or any other musical genre!!

“I feel like I’m 10 years old and it’s Christmas Eve!”
A message from the "Golf Gods!"
We just love it when a quote like the headline above lands in our lap and we don’t have to embellish it in any way.  September is a very busy month for golf groups staying at the Carson Valley Inn. Rick Morgan, general manager of Saddle Creek Resort in Copperopolis brings a group of close friends to the CVI every year for a long weekend of golf and fun – he’s been doing it for over 20 years. We ran into Rick when he arrived last Thursday and his exact words were “I look forward to this trip every year. When I get here, I feel like I’m 10 years old and it’s Christmas Eve!” Rick’s is just one of over 100 different groups of golfers to headquarter at the Carson Valley Inn each year for anywhere from 1 to 5 days of golf. Putting these trips together is our specialty and now is the time to be making your group’s travel plans for 2017. Give Greg Enholm a call at 775-783-6615 and he’ll walk you through a package to meet your needs. Greg can't guarantee that you'll feel like you're 10 years old, but he will do his best to make sure your group's visit will help you feel like it's Christmas Eve!

Hard to turn down a big draft
from this little devil!
Walk Don’t Run! Masquerade is the theme for tomorrow's final 2016 Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk in Gardnerville and Sharkey's Silver Dollar bar, right inside Sharkey's Hwy 395 entrance, is a perfect stop along the way. Sharkey's Jackpot Café is also good idea before or after the Wine Walk . . . some food in your system tends to absorb some of the wine or whatever other spirits you encounter along the way. That brings up another point: in dissecting the name Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk, note that the first word is Thirsty and the last word is Walk. Those are the two operative words so quench your Thirst with whatever you like – many choose one of the draft beers available at Sharkey’s Silver Dollar Bar – and be sure to Walk, leave the vehicular operation to the designated driver!

And the Winners Are: Another exciting Monthly Blackjack Tournament last night - always gets down to the final hands! Total money paid out was $1250 with Richard Leigh winning the $625 first place prize. David Bailey ($375 for second) and Richard Trott ($250 for third) rounded out the top three. Next tournament is October 11 and it's just $25 to get in!

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Tyler Stafford entertains tonight, The California Cowboys anchor the weekend Thursday through Saturday, we show NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and Eric Jensen plays next Tuesday and Wednesday. R. W. Smith and The California Cowboys deliver a powerful sound with the clear punch of tight three-part harmonies. Lead singer and songwriter, R.W. dances and jokes with the audience while delivering top billing entertainment. Together with drummer Hal Atkinson, guitar player Gary Potterton (producer of “Grandma got run over by a Reindeer”) and bass player Cary Atkinson; these fine musicians form one of California’s most successful country-western bands. The group has appeared on concert billings with such country favorites as Alabama, Big & Rich, Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard, Clint Black, George Jones, Joe Diffe, Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, The Bellamy Brothers, Restless Heart, Travis Tritt, Doug Stone, Alan Jackson, George Strait, and many other country stars. Click here for the upcoming lineup of free entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.

Burger Wars, Golf, Pumpkin Drop, Kingsbury Open, More

Our French Disaster is in the Hunt! The Gourmet Hamburger (aka The French Disaster) served in CV Steak at the Carson Valley Inn has been nominated in a "Reader's Choice Burger Wars" poll being conducted by the Carson Valley Times, a great online source of area news.
This one is not for lightweights. Two Char Broiled Burger Patties totaling 3/4 pound are made from choice Filet Mignon, New York and Rib Eye Steak ground in house. Toppings and additions include Jack and Cheddar Cheeses, Smoked Tomato, Pickled Cucumber Slices, Truffle Oil Mayonnaise topped with Duck liver "Foie Gras" and Quail Egg.  This monstrosity is served with Fresh French Fried Potatoes lathered with garlic and parsley butter! Most people can't finish it but they always come back for another try! Like it or think you might? Please give us your vote!

Dinner For Two in CV Steak on Us? Check our Facebook page today or use the Comments section below. Just tell us your favorite CV Steak entree, appetizer or memory. The random drawing will be this Sunday at 5 p.m. from all Facebook and Blog comments and we'll announce the winner next Wednesday morning.

Now That's a Round of Golf! What's it like to play an 18-hole round of golf when it's two holes at each of nine golf courses all in one day? It's quite an adventure and 16 folks experienced it first-hand on the Divine Nine Golf Media Tour on Tuesday, September 30.  It started with breakfast in Katie's at 6 AM and wound up (wound down is probably a better term) with a Basque dinner at the JT in Gardnerville finishing up after 9:30 PM.
Here's a link to the coverage we received from KTVN (CBS) and KRNV (NBC) in Reno. While we can't set up the exact same round for your group, we can and will arrange a golf outing that includes golf at any of our area courses for as many days as you wish, hotel accommodations, food & beverage functions and activities for any non-golfers.  We can even include bus transportation between the CVI and the courses based on your group's size and bus availability. Find out more by calling Greg Enholm, PGA in our Sales Department at 775-783-6615. Greg is busy now booking golf groups for the 2015 season and we'd welcome the opportunity to have you tee it up with us!

Speaking of Golf: There's still plenty of time and good weather to enjoy our October Golf Special. For more information click here . . .  or, better yet, contact Greg at 775-783-6615 or by email.

You Can Get There From Here! Or, better yet, you can get here from there and it's faster and easier now that Kingsbury Grade (SR 207) is open again after a major reconstruction project. Our congratulations and thanks go out to all the folks at Q&D Construction, Inc. and NDOT for getting the pass back open ahead of schedule!

Heading to Reno this Weekend . . . we sure hope the boss doesn't mind us mentioning this; so do this only if you absolutely positively have to be in Reno this weekend and you have a written excuse: Our friends and partners at The Eldorado are holding their 33rd Annual Great Italian Festival this Saturday and Sunday and the weather will be perfect! Fists and Fettuccini? As part of the festivities, the Nevada Boxing Team (some of them boxed in TJ's Corral a few weeks ago) will be training on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. The ring will be set up outside above the railroad tracks so stop by and say hi to the coaches and boxers as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Staying in the Carson Valley? Be sure not to miss the Aviation Roundup Saturday, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Minden-Tahoe Airport just five minutes from the Carson Valley Inn. One of the highlights is a Pumpkin Drop with the target being an outhouse . . . could be like the scene from the original Jurassic Park movie sans the dinosaur!

The Northern California PGA Chapter held their Northern California Senior Open Championship at nearby Clear Creek Tahoe earlier this week and congratulations to Shawn McEntee, a PGA instructor at Chardonnay Golf Club who won by one stroke over Stuart Smith, Director of Golf at Somersett Golf and Country Club in Reno. What does this have to do with the Carson Valley Inn? For starters, many of the participants including the winner stayed here at the CVI on Sunday and Monday – another of the 100ish golf groups who headquarter at the CVI each year. Also, this is a good reason to remind all of our golfing guests there is still time to enjoy golf at Clear Creek Tahoe this year if you are staying at the CVI. Call Greg at 775-783-6615 for more on golf group packages or access to Clear Creek!

A CV Steak Did Ya Know? CV Steak at the Carson Valley Inn is the only restaurant in our area that offers tableside tossed salad – and it's included with every entrée!! Choose our house-made special dressing (sure, we'll let you taste it first) or a dressing of your choice – it's the last thing to go on before the tossing begins. Our tip for a relatively unusual and exceptionally special CV Steak appetizer? The Salmon Tartare – try it!  While not mandatory, reservations are always suggested and sometimes necessary for CV Steak – call today at 775-783-6650.
