Rockin' Country at Super Bowl and TJ's Corral, Mike Tice Event for the Kids, Golf, Blueberry Pie and More

Super Bowl 1994 Halftime Show
Ties to TJ's Corral!
The 1994 Super Bowl halftime show was called a "Rockin' Country Sunday" and, get this, the show featured 4 names who would all appear in TJ’s Corral over 20 years later: Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt and Wynonna Judd - with a special appearance by Naomi Judd for the finale. The show included dancers with yard-long light sticks and it was the first Super Bowl halftime show in which the main stadium lights were turned off for the performance. Fast forward 20+ years: Tanya appeared in TJ’s Corral in 2015, Wynonna opened the 2017 TJ’s concert season and both Travis (June 1) and Clint (June 29) are performing at TJ’s this year!

Our full 2018 Concert Lineup includes The Righteous Brothers: Bill Medley & Bucky Heard on Friday, May 25; Travis Tritt on Friday, June 1; Granger Smith on Saturday, June 16;  Clint Black on Friday, June 29; Ted Nugent on Wednesday, July 4, Trace Adkins on Saturday, July 14;  and Creedence Clearwater Revisited on Sunday, August 12.

Your best and fastest bet for purchasing tickets for any TJ’s Corral concert is through our website which allows you to see the seating layout map and pick your seat(s) for one or more concerts in one transaction. You can also purchase tickets in person at our Hotel Desk. Important Note: A few of these concerts are selling through fast – please don’t miss out.

The 1994 Super Bowl game itself? The Dallas Cowboys handed the Buffalo Bills their fourth consecutive Super Bowl loss, 30 – 13.

Mike Tice Event – For the Kids!
The 8th Annual Mike Tice “For the Kids” charity weekend is quickly approaching and both Coach Tice and the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada are inviting the community to get more involved this year.  Since all money raised by this event is matched by CVI owner Mike Pegram for the benefit of the Boys and Girls Club Carson Valley Branch, the more involvement, the more benefit to the kids! The weekend kicks off with the Carson Valley Music and Brew Fest on Friday, June 15 from 4 to 10 PM in TJ’s Corral and tickets are only $25.  Saturday, June 16 is the Granger Smith Concert at 8 PM with tickets starting at $29. Sunday brings the Charity Golf Tournament at Genoa Lakes Golf Club followed by an evening BBQ Dinner with cocktails, live music and a live auction in TJ’s Corral.  We’re looking for some additional generous sponsors and participants and all the details are on the MikeTiceForTheKids website!

Top Gun Songs Live in TJ's Corral, A Resort Fee Saga, Mother's Day Champagne Brunch, More

Top Gun and TJ's Corral
1986  . . . Kelly McGillis was 29, Tom Cruise was 35 and their movie Top Gun was quite the rage! The Top Gun tie to TJ’s Corral and the Carson Valley is threefold:  The movie features two songs by 2017 TJ’s alum Kenny Loggins (Danger Zone and Playing With the Boys) and one of the biggest hits of the Righteous Brothers (You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin') who are opening the TJ’s Corral 2018 concert season on Friday night, May 25. The third tie? The movie is about US Navy aviators and the Navy’s elite demonstration team The Blue Angels will be part of the 2018 Aviation Roundup Performer’s and Sponsor’s Party in TJ’s Corral on October 12!

Back to the Righteous Brothers:  Their non-stop romantic hits of the sixties and seventies are icons of that era and still elicit memories for those growing up in that decade plus. You can relive all those memories in the confines of TJ’s Corral in about six weeks so jump online now and get your tickets by Clicking Here. Your best and fastest bet for purchasing tickets for any TJ’s Corral concert is through our website which allows you to see the seating layout map and pick your seat(s) for one or more concerts in one transaction. You can also purchase tickets in person at our Hotel Desk.

The Resort Fee Saga
How does a $129 room rate become $209?
It’s technically not illegal or false advertising but we here at CVI sometimes think it should be! Let’s dive in ‘cause you may have had this happen:

You book a room somewhere with a really competitive rate – let's use $129 per night plus tax. In your head you figure this will be about $145 a night with tax and move along to the next thing.

You go to finalize your booking OR heaven forbid, upon checkout you have sticker shock when the three nights cost you not the expected $435, but over $625! You know you didn’t make any room charges, didn’t watch any pay-per-view movies, didn’t direct-dial a foreign country from your room phone . . .  so how did it happen?!

You look at the bill and see the expected $129 room rate and the expected $16 - $18 per night tax.  Then it hits you . .. There's an unadvertised “resort fee” of $25 - $35 per night for wireless, fitness center, and a couple of other things that you didn’t care about and certainly didn't use. There is also a parking fee of somewhere between $25 and $35 per night and a 3% city improvement tax and another 2% stadium or convention center add-on. You add it all up and discover that your advertised $129 plus occupancy tax per night actually cost almost $200 more than expected for the three nights.
Don’t be fooled by those “competitive” or cheaper online rates. Here at CVI we charge the rate you were quoted plus the obligatory 13% tax that is the total of all the little parts of our various state and county taxes. There's no resort fee because our wireless internet access, fitness center, business center, etc are all free. And you won’t see a parking fee because parking is also free at the CVI. So, that extra $200 will pay for a nice dinner in CV Steak one night, breakfast two days in Katie’s and a few treats in Job’s Perk. Case closed . . . see you here at the CVI on your next trip!
Tidbits
  • Today is Banana Day. We have so many options to properly acknowledge the event today at the Carson Valley Inn: Banana Pancakes is the pancake of the day from 7 to 11 AM in Katie’s, have a Banana Split anytime today in Katie’s, or take the party home with one of our Banana Cream Pies (full size or mini) from the Katie’s bakery counter. If none of those sound good (that can’t be true!), stop by Job’s Perk and order one of our Banana Smoothies or a Banana Nut Muffin!  You say you’re trying to eat healthy today? Then slide into Katie’s, order a bowl of oatmeal, and ask for a sliced banana on the side!
  • Friday is Volunteer Day. The Carson Valley Inn offers our sincere thanks to our many, many local customers and other local residents who serve as volunteers to help keep our community safe and provide extra services to those in need!!!
  • Saturday is Husband Appreciation Day. Since so many of the “Days” we mention here are about the females, we thought we’d throw this one in with the suggestion that the wives out there take your husbands to CV Steak for dinner!
  • Nevada (UNR for most of us) Alums and Fans “mark your calendars:” The Wolf Pack Caravan with Coach Norvell will be stopping at the CVI for the annual visit on Tuesday evening, May 15. More info coming soon.
  • Mother’s Day Weekend Hotel Package: join us for two nights over Mother’s Day Weekend and receive $80 in Dining Credit for use in CV Steak, Katie’s or the Valley Ballroom Champagne Brunch. Get all the details on our website and be sure to book the Mother’s Day Package.
We Do Miss Things . . .
But We’re On Top of This One!
We’ll be at first to admit that we occasionally miss something – like last week when our blog said Canvas Tote Bags would be given out on Ladies’ Night and it was actually Trinket Boxes. And there have been times we’ve left a poster up well past an event . . . or misspelled something in this blog or our newspaper or something similar. However, since some of you have mentioned it, here’s the deal: We are well aware that our billboard on Highway 395 across from Sunridge Golf Course is still showing the promotion we ran in February and March. This one’s a good story – and we’ll tell you all about it in a future blog when we get it resolved. For now, suffice to say that it’s nothing we did and nothing the billboard company did . . . it’s just “one of those things” that is beyond our control!

Arizona Jones tonight through Saturday, Cliff and Dave Sunday and Monday and Tim Snider Tuesday and Wednesday. In the modern-day entertainment scene often infused with technological enhancements, Arizona Jones prefers to do it the old fashioned way - live and personal. And when they put their rockin' spin on classic R&B hits from the 60's and 70's, you never know who'll be singing louder, the audience or the band. The group plays the hits from Aerosmith and Amy Winehouse to Wilson Pickett and ZZ Top . . . and many artists in between. So . . . bring your dancin' shoes! Cliff and Dave is powerhouse singer/gospel drummer Cliff Porter and southern-fried singer/guitarist Dave Berry providing an evening of sultry R&B, funk and swinging rock ’n’ roll. Tim Snider not only plays violin but loops guitar, percussion, and vocals into a sound that has been described as a “world-folk hybrid, aimed at the heart, the head and the feet.”

Mother's Day Champagne Brunch, Anniversary Weekend, Concert Update, More

Anniversary Weekend
It’s been a little over eight years since the early-morning (12:01 AM !) purchase of the Carson Valley Inn by Mike Pegram and his partners in January of 2010. The semi-trucks were poised outside the casino entrance and immediately old slots hauled away by one crew while another crew began the demolition of the tired and worn casino. To put it in a term that aligns with one of Mike’s other passions: “the race was on” for the first step – the total refurbishment of the casino. Over the next few months, our new casino sprang to life, CV Steak opened and we looked up long enough to have a Grand Reopening. That was eight years ago this spring so we're celebrating this weekend with some anniversary fun.

The celebration starts Friday with cash and freeplay for you in more of our April Anniversary Drawings at 5, 7 and 9 PM when you can win up to $15,000! On Saturday, Inn Club members Earn Five Times Points on all slot/video play and everyone is invited for Free Cake and Champagne in the casino from 1 to 2 PM and again from 7 to 8 PM. We’ll also be handing out Free 8th Anniversary T-Shirts at random times throughout the day on Saturday. We wrap it up all day Sunday when INN Club members earn 3X Points on Video Poker and 5X Points on our many remaining video slots.

 This Ain't No Barbershop Quartet!
A Country Quartet!
Today is Barbershop Quartet Day. We couldn’t find a direct tie to the CVI so we came up with Country Quartet as depicted in the image above! For information and tickets on the concerts by each of our quartet of 2018 country artists – Clint Black, Travis Tritt, Granger Smith and Trace Adkins – plus our other 2018 concerts in TJ's Corral, Click Here. Your best and fastest bet for purchasing tickets is through our website which allows you to see the seating layout map and pick your seat(s) for one or more concerts in one transaction. You can also purchase tickets in person at our Hotel Desk. Important Update: Please don't wait too long to buy tickets . . . two of these country concerts are already well over half sold out and we don't want you to miss out!

Man Tripping
Apparently Not Just For Men!

It All Started when James Hill visited the CVI last month and it continued last week when he posted this story on Mantripping.com which leads with these words: “If you are planning a guys weekend getaway to explore Carson Valley, Nevada I can't think of a more perfect basecamp than the Carson Valley Inn and Casino. The prices are low, atmosphere is fun, friendly and it is perfectly located to explore all that the area has to offer.” Mantripping.com then put the story on Facebook and naturally we shared it on our Facebook page.  And wadda ya know, the most “we couldn’t write it better ourselves” comment comes from not a guy, but a female named Elizabeth who wrote, “I really like Carson Valley Inn. I reside in the central valley of California . . .  my husband and I take a trip once a year to Minden to visit relatives . . .  our favorite place to stay a few days . . .  we visit during the day but evenings are ours at the casino . . . the restaurant  serves delicious and plentiful food especially breakfast . . . the indoor pool is terrific and we take advantage of it, the rooms are spacious . . .  I could go on and on but go find out for yourselves and I guarantee that you'll return again and again.”  So, whether you’re man tripping, woman tripping or couple tripping we hope you head our way!

Say Cheese!
Tomorrow is Grilled Cheese Day. We checked our tattered copy of the Katie’s menu we keep down in the blog writers cave and didn’t see grilled cheese listed so we ventured up to Katie's. We asked the first server we saw, Tiffany, “what would you say if I asked to order a grilled cheese sandwich right now?”  Her answer was deliberate and delivered looking us right in the eye while blocking any escape: “I’d say what kind of bread and what kind of cheese?!” So, even though you don’t see a grilled cheese sandwich on the Katie’s menu, don’t hesitate to order one tomorrow or any day! Friday is Blame Someone Else Day - don’t come looking for us if you order a grilled cheese sandwich on Thursday and happen to run into someone other than Tiffany (we’re kidding!)

If so, you were born between 1965 and 1969 and probably turned 50 in the last few years or will soon.  So here's a thought for all you now 50-somethings . . . the romantic songs of the Righteous Brothers just may have been playing in the background when you were conceived!! Ask your parents, aunts, uncles and their friends about the Righteous Brothers mega hits "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" or "Unchained Melody." If you get a smile or a blush, why not bring them to our opening concert on May 25, The Righteous Brothers: Bill Medley & Bucky Heard. They'll enjoy the trip down memory lane . . . . and you'll find out more about the romantic sounds that defined the sixties and seventies. For information and tickets on all of our 2018 concerts in TJ's Corral, Click Here. Your best and fastest bet for purchasing tickets is through our website which allows you to see the seating layout map and pick your seat(s) for one or more concerts in one transaction. You can also purchase tickets in-person at our Hotel Desk.

So, Was It a Horse Name or Country Song Title?

Thank You to everyone who entered the contest in last week’s blog. Most of you did so by sending us an email and most of you guessed the following correctly:
  • The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’: Listed as #2 of Travis Tritt’s 10 Best Songs in this Billboard article. Catch the video above and join Travis and his band in concert on Friday, June 1 in TJ's Corral!
  • Wild at Midnight: One of Mike’s horses - won a race Saturday, March 24 at Santa Anita.
  • Once on Whiskey: One of Mike’s horses - won a race Sunday, March 25 at Santa Anita.
  • Raise Up Your Glass –and make a toast to all of the times that mean the most: Granger Smith of course!
  • A Good Run of Bad Luck: This one’s a Clint Black song but we’ve heard Mike use similar (if not exact!) words when describing most years of his thoroughbred racing experiences!
  • I Am the Midnight: Would have made a good name for a horse, but this is also a Granger Smith song.
  • Marry for Money: A Trace Adkins Top 20 hit, reaching a peak of number 14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in April 2009.
  • Whiskey Ticket: One of Mike’s horses, the now 6-year old was the winner of the Illinois Derby in 2015.
The contest winner was Kim F. who we are contacting by email. While we can’t predict when Mike’s horses will be running, we can definitively lead you to information on our upcoming  concerts in TJ’s Corral on This Page.

Cake, Beer and Golf!
  • Today is Carrot Day. Sure, we have carrots in some of our salads and in items like our Beef or Chicken Teriyaki Bowls. But, the most popular and highly recommended way to enjoy carrots “round here” is the Katie’s Carrot Cake – available by the slice in Katie’s or take home a whole Carrot Cake from Katie’s Bakery Counter!!
  • Thursday is Caramel Day. Since we’re on a Katie’s Bakery Counter roll, look for Caramel Cheesecake as the “Cheesecake of the Day!”
  • Friday is New Beer’s Eve and Saturday is Beer Day Both tie back to the end of prohibition and, get this, the first 24 hours of the end of the prohibition saw an estimated 1.5 million gallons of beer consumed!  We’re not suggesting that CVI guests try to top that mark this Friday. However, we do have an ample selection of draft and bottled beers at our casino bars so if 100 of us started Friday, and drank four 12-ounce beers a day, seven days a week, we could reach that mark in??? (who cares!)  Anyone up for it? Anyone actually figure it out? Anyone just wanna go have a beer?!
  • Tuesday is Golfer’s Day: From the lush green fairways of a golf course to the green felt of a blackjack table, golf and gaming have plethora of similarities.  Golfers like to gamble on and off the course.  Golfers like to spend times with friends & family recounting amazing accomplishments and tough beats.  Hence, why over 100 golf groups choose to stay and play at the Carson Valley Inn each year.  To double down on your group’s next golf trip, contact our resident PGA Professional, Greg Enholm at 775-783-6615.
