Stu Cook Interview, Blue Angels Thread the Needle, Legend of the Carson Valley, More

A Chat with Stu Cook
of Creedence Clearwater Revisited
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford bring a nearly sold-out (standing room tickets remain) Creedence Clearwater Revisited concert to TJ’s Corral on Sunday evening, August 12. Northern Nevada Photo Journalist Nick McCabe interviewed Clifford during an area appearance by "Revisited" in 2017 so he was invited to chat with Stu Cook recently in advance of their upcoming visit. The interview is at this link and covers Stu's thoughts on touring, hobbies (he used to fly his own plane in and out of Minden Airport when he lived in Tahoe), travel, the sacrifices of success and more. You can buy tickets on our website or in person at the Hotel Front Desk. Concert night reservations for the Hotel, Motor Lodge and RV Park can be made on our website or by calling 775-783-6629.

These Guys Can Really Thread the Needle!
  • Today is Thread the Needle Day. And there's nothing like watching the needle get threaded at 500 miles an hour as shown in the Blue Angels picture above! Want to see it all for yourself? Get tickets now for the Aviation Roundup at the Minden-Tahoe airport on October 13 and 14 featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels!!
  • Friday is Talk in an Elevator Day. On the surface, you wouldn't think this has anything to do with the Carson Valley Inn. However, we happen to be one of the few places in Minden and Gardnerville where there is actually an elevator that covers enough floors to create that awkward silence that occurs when strangers get in an elevator. So, next time you ride the elevator at the CVI, mix it up a little and get a conversation going!
  • Friday is also Scotch Whiskey Day. We have the full gamut of choices at the CV Steak Bar from the get-up-on-the-ladder, top shelf Johnny Walker Gold to other more reachable brands. What's the best way to drink Scotch Whiskey? Decide for yourself after reading these suggestions from a Scottish bartender.
  • Saturday is Milk Chocolate Day. Most of our house-made chocolate desserts use the more nutritionally favorable dark chocolate which has more of the original cocoa bean. If you just have a hankering for milk chocolate, order the Chocolate Mousse in CV Steak!
  • Sunday is International Chicken Wing Day. Rather than confuse you with dozens of combinations, we make it simple: our Pound of Buffalo Wings basket with celery and ranch dressing is available for at-your-seat enjoyment at our bars or in the Cabaret Lounge!
  • Monday is Cheesecake Day. We make cheesecake just about every day in our bakery and they have proven quite popular as desserts in Katie's and CV Steak . . . Plus dozens are purchased every week at the Katie's Bakery Counter. Could this unusually high local demand be a throwback to the dairy heritage of Carson Valley??
J. T. Humphrey - One of the Legends of the Carson Valley
A Legend of the Carson Valley
Recreation, history, relaxation, exploration . . . all this and more are available in the Carson Valley just minutes from the Carson Valley Inn. Take a look at JT Humphrey in the picture above. He’s just one of the Legends of the Carson Valley. Not legendary because of being here many years . . . but legendary because he depicts just one aspect of all there is to do, see and experience.  Find out more about the Legends of the Carson Valley by clicking on this link and download or request a Carson Valley Visitors Guide by clicking on this link!

Christmas in July? Are We Your Best?

Creedence Ticket Sales Robust
Stu Cook and Doug "Cosmo" Clifford
Great concert by Trace Adkins last Saturday . . . and lots of last minute calls from fans wanting tickets after the concert was Sold Out. So, let’s get this out on the table: while it’s still over three weeks until Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford bring Creedence Clearwater Revisited into TJ’s Corral on Sunday evening, August 12, we are getting close to selling out the available seats. If you were a music fan in the late sixties and early seventies, you don’t want to miss out on the chance to experience the rock hits of CCR right here in Minden! We checked and there are still rooms available that night in both our Hotel and Motor Lodge so plan on making a night of it! Purchase concert tickets through our website which allows you to view the seating layout map and select your seat. You can also buy tickets in person at the Hotel Front Desk. Reservations for the Hotel, Motor Lodge and RV Park can be made on our website or by calling 775-783-6629.

Not Your Usual Christmas in July Blurb
We’ve all seen them . . . The Christmas in July Celebration headline followed by some type of a sale or push to get you to do something that usually gets handled in December. This isn’t one of those situations. What we do suggest is that you give some thought to whether you’ll be trying to organize a Christmas Party for your company, association, club or other organization. When December rolls around, we turn on the Christmas flair for parties held here at the Carson Valley Inn. Our banquet rooms have Christmas trees, wreaths and other holiday touches. The linens are holiday colors . . . and there’s Christmas background music. We even have specially themed buffets during December with entrées and ingredients appropriate to the Christmas season. And if you’re holding your party here at the CVI, we offer your guests a special room rate on the night of your party so there is a safe haven for those who choose to imbibe. Sound like something you should be looking at now or that you anticipate getting tasked with at the last minute? Then “get on it” by calling Carrie at 775-783-6673. We have plenty of weeknight availability in December… unfortunately all the weekends are already booked. However, here’s a thought that started to catch on during the last two years: if you’d rather not try to work your Christmas party around all of the other business and family events of December, why not give a little broader definition to the event and plan a celebration dinner in early January when we do have some weekend availability.

Speaking of Christmas . . .
Unless you jumped onto Prime Day on Amazon.com earlier this week you probably haven’t even started, or even began thinking about, your Christmas shopping. That’s OK, and we’re not suggesting you start buying stuff now. We are planting this seed: when it does come time to start Christmas shopping, wouldn’t it be nice to have a small stash of money already set aside? A perfect way to start your “stash” is with a part-time job at the Carson Valley Inn. Perhaps you’re soon heading back to school and will be available afternoons or evenings? Perhaps your kids are heading back to school and you’ll be available during the day? Or, perhaps it’s just time to buckle down and “get a job!”  Whatever your reasoning, please consider applying for one of these open positions at the CVI!

But It's Still July and It's Hot!
Did reading about Christmas cool you down during the triple-digit heat of this week? Probably not – didn’t work for us either! So consider this: our air-conditioning works great, we have plenty of cold beer at both of our bars and the frozen smoothies in Job’s Perk are a real chiller. This combination is a perfect reason to stop in at the Carson Valley Inn and beat the heat!

Are We the Best?
Lots of activity going on as local businesses jockey for position to win various categories in The Record Courier’s Best of Carson Valley 2018. To borrow a term from Febreze, you’d have to be “Nose Blind” to not have noticed at least some of the many ads, signs, social media posts, emails, and other pleas from Carson Valley businesses and organizations asking for your vote. Frankly, we don’t believe in that approach so we simply invite you to go to this link, read the brief instructions, select a category and get started. If you think we deserve your vote in a particular area, we’ll graciously accept  it with our thanks!

Sip ‘N’ Savor
We just have to give a shout out to our sister property Sharkey’s Casino as they always seem to be one of the centers of the frivolity during the Main Street Gardnerville Third Thursday Wine Walks! This Thursday will be no exception as the event takes on a Sip ‘N’ Savor theme which means that in addition to the wine and other beverages to enjoy at the various businesses, there will also be food trucks and food caterers strategically located along the way. The event runs from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM and all the details are at this link.

This Week in the Casino

This week you can  also bet The Open (British Open Golf Tournament), Major League Baseball, WNBA, Canadian Football League, the NASCAR Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Horseracing at all the other tracks. Futures include winners of the World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship and the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament!   Not that we and many or our customers are anxious, but College Football starts on Saturday, August 25 and the first NFL Game is Thursday, September 6!
  • Speaking of Horse Racing: Mike Pegram's colt Once On Whiskey won last Saturday's Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby!
Hot Dogs, Tequila and Creme Brule!!
  • Today is Hot Dog Day and July 26 (that's next Thursday) is Chili Dog Day. By our own admission, Job's Perk is not equipped to handle the talents and associated volume of Hot Dog Eating Champion Joey Chestnut! However, we do serve both Hot Dogs and Chili Dogs every day in "The Perk" and you can enjoy them as loaded or as simple as your appetite and tastes dictate!
  • Thursday is Daiquiri Day. You can't think Daiquiri without thinking Rum; and you can't think Rum without thinking Jimmy Buffet; and you can't think Jimmy Buffet without thinking Margarita; so just skip down to Tequila Day below!
  • Sunday is Crème Brule Day. Heavy cream, egg yolks, vanilla . . . all baked, topped with caramelized sugar and served warm. Now, hold that thought for the next time you want the perfect finale to a dinner in CV Steak!
  • Tuesday is Tequila Day. Tequila comes in everything from the "best suited for blended drinks" to the "seriously, how much is one bottle!" and many in between.  We've sat through presentations and tastings on the upper crusts of tequilas . . . but for today we suggest you just try whatever sounds appealing from this list of 35 Tequila Drinks More Exciting Than a Margarita! How many can the CVI bartenders make? Well, if you go there, please don't mention that you read about it in our blog . . . they all like us blog writers now and we'd like to keep it that way!

Trace Adkins Saturday, Golf & Sporting Clays Events, More

Concert Musings

Trace this Saturday: We’d love to announce we found a way of putting more tickets up for sale, but every seat and standing room ticket has been sold. There is a slight possibility that a few tickets could be turned back at the last moment and be available for purchase at Will Call on concert night . . . but no guarantees. Thanks to everyone involved in helping us notch yet another “sold out” hole in our 2018 concert belt!

Creedence August 12: From Have You Seen the Rain to Who’ll Stop the Rain you’ll hear all the hits when Creedence Clearwater Revival founding members and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford lead Creedence Clearwater Revisited into TJ’s Corral on Sunday evening, August 12! Rooms are available that night in both our Hotel and Motor Lodge with rates starting at $99. Purchase concert tickets through our website which allows you to view the seating layout map and select your seat. You can also buy tickets in person at the Hotel Front Desk. Reservations for the Hotel, Motor Lodge and RV Park can be made on our website or by calling 775-783-6629.

Tidbits from Ted Concert Last Wednesday: Great crowd quite patriotically garbed, patient with the extra screening procedures and definitely in the Independence Day spirit! As always, a captured-the-feel wrap-up by Tahoe Onstage! We learned that “Ted Talk” can mean more than just watching 18 minute videos on YouTube! No complaints from people in seats about having a hard time hearing because people were visiting in the standing areas! Lots of reminders about first and second amendment rights! The song Stranglehold is appropriately named because Ted had a stranglehold on the audience until he played this hit! Of the 1500 patriotic hats we gave out to concertgoers, not a one was left behind when we cleaned up! Ted definitely knew how to pronounce Nevada!

This Week in the Casino
  • Ladies’ Night Tonight: Join us from 5:30 to 8:30 PM with a Chocolate Shoppe Treat for the first 150 ladies (with more instant FreePlay winners inside) and All Wrapped Up Gift Baskets as hot seat prizes.  Also tonight: games, raffles (with more winners), a weekly drink special and free bingo with bigger jackpots.
  • Progressive Cash Giveaway Friday and Saturday:  Join us at 6, 7 and 8 PM are for cash, FreePlay and chances for the Progressive Cash Giveaway Jackpot.
  • Point Multipliers Saturday: Inn Club members earn 4 Times Points on video reel slots and 3 Times Points on video poker slots all day Saturday . . . A great way to build up your point total to use for comps and other special benefits.

  • Sports and Race Book: This week you can bet on today’s World Cup Soccer Semifinals Match between Croatia and England and this weekend’s finals. The Wimbledon Tennis Tournament matches are also available and the odds are up for the The Open (British Open Golf Tournament) on July 19 – 22. Wagers are also being taken on Major League Baseball, WNBA, NBA Summer League, Canadian Football League, the NASCAR Quaker State 400 at the Kentucky Speedway and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship and the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament!
From Muffins to Fritters!
  • Today is Blueberry Muffin Day. We whip them up in our bakery and serve them daily in Job’s Perk and Katie’s.
  • Friday is French Fries Day. Yep. Got ‘em in Katie’s and, so the story goes, you can get garlic fries by special request in CV Steak. And there is some irony that the next day, France plays in the World Cub finals, so let's call 'em “pommes frites” this year!
  • Friday is also Kebab Day. With no respect as to whether it meets the strict definition of a “kebab,” our vote goes straight to the Seafood Brochette entrée in CV Steak: skewered salmon, swordfish, halibut, scallops and shrimp served with a chili lime cilantro glace!
  • Saturday is Grand Marnier Day.  With all due respect to the mixed drinks made with Grand Marnier, and also to the relaxing powers of a straight snifter after dinner, our focus is on the Grand Marnier Cheesecake dessert served only in CV Steak.
  • Saturday is Pandemonium Day. Hope it doesn’t get quite to that level at the Trace Adkins Concert in TJ’s Saturday!
  • Monday is Fresh Spinach Day. Everyone needs an occasional day to tone down the calorie intake so order the Spinach Salad in Katie’s: Fresh spinach tossed with hard-boiled egg, bacon, diced red onion, mushrooms, Parmesan cheese and croutons served with raspberry vinaigrette! Want a little more protein? Add grilled chicken breast and you can still claim “I behaved today.”
  • Monday is Corn Fritters Day. No, we don’t have corn fritters but we have our viable alternative for offsetting the fresh spinach salad you had earlier trying to be good: enjoy an Apple Fritter - available daily in Job’s Perk!
High Score or Low Score
We Offer It Both Ways!
  • Looking to Shoot a Low Score? Then be sure to check out our Annual Mixed Scramble Golf Outing on the weekend after Labor Day. Whatever your level of golf talents, you’ll fit right in. A blind draw determines the teams for the Saturday tournament, you’re guaranteed to meet new friends who enjoy golf at some level, there are social functions on both Friday and Saturday nights and an optional practice round on Friday. This event is perfect for those who enjoy playing golf yet want the comfort of “acceptance” no matter what their level of play – either in general or on the  particular day of this tournament. For more information, click here to see the flyer with all the details.
  • Prefer to Aim for a High Score?  Our Summer Fun Sporting Clays coming up on August 5 – 7 could be right up your alley! There’s an opening reception at the CVI on Sunday night, two days chasing clay targets (Walker River Resort and Carson Valley Clays) and a final-night dinner at JT Basque Restaurant & Bar. All the details are in the flyer at this link.
In Our Restaurants

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
RYE Brothers tonight through Saturday, John Palmore Sunday and Monday, and Jamie Rollins Tuesday and Wednesday.  The Rye Brothers are a “power-pop” country act, mixing contemporary country music and rock n’ roll guitar driven songs. The perfect cabaret lounge entertainment for Trace Adkins concert weekend! Musical director for the late "Louis Armstrong," John Palmore is an accomplished singer and keyboardist who has worked with Jackie Wilson, Mary Wells, ZZ Hill, Wilson Pickett, Joe Simon, Percy Sledge, The Platters and other "name" artists.  An upbeat and experienced entertainer, Jamie Rollins performs a variety of music from country to rock, to classic oldies and R&B – plus a few his own songs.

Stranglehold on Concert Tickets, Cash is King, Our Beautiful Town

Stranglehold on Concert Tickets!
Could be the artists. Could be the pent-up desire for entertainment. Could be the “word” is out on the incredible setting and ambience of TJ’s Corral for a concert. Probably a combination of all this and more that’s putting a “Stranglehold” on tickets and producing sellout crowds for our outdoor concerts this year. Granger Smith was sold out, Clint Black was sold out, a handful of standing room tickets remain for Ted Nugent tonight, and Trace Adkins is already sold out for July 14. For all this we offer our sincere thanks! This type of support, especially with all the other concerts going on in Northern Nevada, is so encouraging and already has us planning for more new entertainment during the 2019 season!

Moving ahead to our last scheduled concert of the year, we have tickets available for the Creedence Clearwater Revisited performance on Sunday, August 12. Rock out to Creedence tunes, join us post-concert in the casino and spend the night!

Looking Back at Clint Black Last Friday: Great review and pictures by Pheonix Gruneich of Tahoe Onstage at this link . . .  Thanks to Clint who tweeted to CVI, “Many thanks! Great crowd, great staff to work with at the venue!” . . . and our thanks for the many, many positive post-concert comments on social media!

James Mabe with Cash and Check Totaling over $73,000!
This Cardiologist Visit Was Really Good!
Yesterday’s visit to the cardiologist was over $70,000 to the “good” for James Mabe. A Smith Valley rancher, James said he only plays the Penny Progressive slots when he stops by the CVI. At other times of the year, he stops in more often. However, since it’s the heart of haying season, his visits are fairly scarce this time of year. Yesterday was an exception, however, as he had a cardiologist appointment. With most of the day shot due to the appointment, he decided to stop by the CVI and invest a couple of hundred dollars trying for the penny progressive. His investment paid off to the tune of $73,686! Not sure that spending the day haying yesterday would've paid that much!

Patrica (l) and Dana & Jane (r) Show Off $7,500
You’d Think We’d Know by Now . . .
Cash is King!
Four lucky winners had a decision to make last Saturday. At the Carson Valley Inn and Sharkey’s Casino, the choice was a brand new Jet Ski perfect for the hot days of July and August . . . or $7500 in cash.  Both Vanessa (Sharkey’s) and Jane (CVI) took the cash! At Bodines Casino and Slot World Casino, winners were given the choice between a new ATV for exploring the miles and acres of hills and trails in our area . . . or $7500 in cash. Both Karen (Bodines) and Patricia (Slot World) took the cash! $30,000 in one night – nice haul for our players!  During July we’re cutting right to the chase and giving our casino players a shot at a total of over $40,000 in various Progressive Cash Giveaways at the four properties including $15,000 up for grabs right here at CVI!

Chicken & Chocolate!
Lots of Chocolate at CVI for
Chocolate Day on Saturday
  • Friday is Fried Chicken Day.  The good news is that we offer a Southern Fried Chicken Breasts Plate every day in Katie's. The great news is our $5.99 Chandler Chicken Dinner Special every Sunday from 2 to 10 PM!  This top-selling special has an almost cult-like following with many repeat customers who not only enjoy this exceptional value, but also sometimes table hop to visit with other Sunday "Chandlerites!"
  • Saturday is Chocolate Day. We have plenty of chocolate choices at the CVI with rich chocolate-desserts in CV Steak, chocolate fudge cake in Katie's, chocolate fudge brownies and chocolate chip cookies at the Katie's Bakery Counter, chocolate topped pastries in Job's Perk and everything in between. And, as a special treat on Saturday, start the day with the chocolate chip pancakes special!
  • Want to Combine Fried Chicken and Chocolate? A little off our usual course, but there is a recipe for Chocolate Fried Chicken in this YouTube video!
Concerts in Minden Park Help Make Minden a Special Place
We're Proud to Be in Minden!
Seems like one of those "best," "prettiest," "most affordable," "most expensive," " most whatever" lists comes out every week. Usually it's the headline in an online news source or a social media luring you into scrolling through all 50 states and exposing you to many ads. Putting that aside, we were honored to have the Carson Valley Inn called out specifically when Minden was named Nevada's choice of  Most Beautiful Small Towns in America by House Beautiful. The picture above is courtesy of the Carson Valley Visitors Authority and it depicts a typical reason why we are still so small-town-America – a moment from a recent GE Family Concert Series in Minden Park. These free concerts are proudly sponsored by the Carson Valley Inn and there’s another one this Friday evening when the Cripple Creek Band entertains with country music and southern rock.
