New Year’s Eve Dining – CVI and Sharkey’s . . . Enjoy these three choices for New Year's Eve specials and regular menu items:
  • CV Steak has a Duo of Tournedos with Seared Scallops (a blackened Filet Mignon with southwest au jus, a blue cheese crusted Filet Mignon and Seared Scallops) for $36 and King Crab Legs (One pound of Alaskan King Crab Legs served with drawn butter) for $35. New Year's Eve reservations are a must in CV Steak – call 775-783-6650.
  • Katie's is offering an Apple Stuffed Roast Pork Loin with a glaze of spiced cranberries and orange zest, mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables, choice of soup or fresh garden green salad, fresh bread and creamery butter for $13.99. Also available is the usual Saturday night special, Roasted Prime Rib & Fried Shrimp Dinner served with baked potato, vegetable and soup or salad for $14.99. Both of these specials are served from 11 a.m.
  • Sharkey’s Jackpot Café is featuring its regular Friday and Saturday Night Special starting at 4 p.m. – Prime Rib and Lobster with twice baked potato and choice of soup or salad for $20.

Another beautiful winter day in Carson Valley

#WhyCV Contest Starts Today: Submissions can  now be made for the #WhyCV Contest sponsored by the Carson Valley Visitors Authority and Carson Valley Times. Gather your favorite photo (like the one above), video or written story depicting why Carson Valley has carved out a special place in your heart. Prizes include an iPad, a GoPro, smartphone camera lenses, and a variety of gift certificates to the best in local dining – including CV Steak of course! All the details are on this page and we hope you’ll include the CArson Valley Inn if we are part of your story on how you came about visiting or moving here!

Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet NFL Football, the remaining NCAA Bowl Games, NBA, College Basketball and NHL.  Also on the board: futures bets on who will win the NCAA Football Championship, Super Bowl, NBA Championship and NHL Stanley Cup.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $4,395 – pick all 15 NFL props straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours! And if no one hits this week, we will carny this over to the NFL playoffs.
  • Around the Sportsbook with Mike, Alan and Greg:
    • Last Week, 3-3: Mike skunked as he took Maryland at -1½ over Boston College (B.C. won) in the Quick Lane Bowl and the Rams at -4 over the 49ers (seriously, did anyone bet the Niners to actually win?). Alan had the Ravens at +5 over the Steelers (got it by 1 point) and the Raiders at -4 over the Colts (another win). Greg got the Niners at +4 over the Rams and was “off by a mile” on the Jets at +16 ½ over the Patriots.
    • Last Week Trivia Quiz: The Quick Lane Bowl is backed by the Detroit Lions. It is a de facto replacement for the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. The Ford Motor Company serves as title sponsor of the game through its auto shop brand Quick Lane.
    • This Week:  Mike likes Oklahoma State at +3 over Colorado and the Clemson Tigers (+3 ½) over Ohio State. Alan’s going pro on his picks: Raiders to beat Denver in a pick ‘em game and the Dolphins at +9 ½ over the Patriots. (Per Mike, “there’s still fight in them there fish!”)  Greg tapped the Giants at +8 over the Redskins and (get ready) the  “overs" on the Falcons-Saints game at 56!
    • Trivia: Only about 17% of NFL games have a point total over 56 points. The highest point total in an NFL game was 113 points when Washington beat the N.Y. Giants 72 - 41 on Nov. 27, 1966.
Relatively Unimportant but Fun: Some people make lists. Still others compile lists of lists. Then there are those who find an article like this: The Master List of Year End Lists - over 350 of 'em! We certainly don’t have time for all this so we "borrowed" this link from an update Bill Chernock from the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce sent to Chamber members yesterday. How did he find the time? We suspect he plans on picking up time this Saturday on Leap Second Time Adjustment Day! What did all these list makers do before the internet provided a forum for publishing such lists?

Planning a Stay at the CVI? You will always get the best rate by booking directly with the Carson Valley Inn either online or by calling our Reservation Department directly at 775-783-6629 or 800-321-6983.

Over 100 Tons of Food in 12 Hours!
What Happens to over 100 Tons of Food Collected in 12 Hours? Unless you’ve been living under a rock (no offense to those who do so) you’ve no doubt heard the Community Food Drive at the Carson Valley location on Friday, December 9 raised over $66,000 in cash and over 222,000 pounds of food for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.  So how exactly does the food closet handle such a large influx of food donations in one 12 hour period? Our friends at CarsonValleyTimes.com went behind the scenes, saw how it works, and posted this article which tells the story!

New Year’s Eve Dining at the Inn: CV Steak and Katie’s are serving their regular menu items and Specials on Saturday, December 31.
  • The New Year's Eve specials in CV Steak are a Duo of Tournedos with Seared Scallops (a blackened Filet Mignon with southwest au jus, a blue cheese crusted Filet Mignon and Seared Scallops) for $36 and King Crab Legs (One pound of Alaskan King Crab Legs served with drawn butter) for $35. CV Steak New Year's Eve reservations are a must – call 775-783-6650.
Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet NFL Football, the remaining NCAA Bowl Games, NBA and College Basketball and NHL Hockey.  Also on the board: futures bets on who will win the NCAA Football Championship, Super Bowl (only X teams left), NBA Championship and NHL Stanley Cup.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $4,304 – pick all 15 NFL props straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours!
  • Around the Sportsbook with Mike, Alan and Greg:
    • Last Week, 2-4 Alan picked the Cardinals at -2 ½ over the Saints (sorry, Saints won) and the Patriots at -3 over the Broncos (got that one). Mike tabbed Texas San Antonio (+7) over New Mexico (hit this one, NM didn’t cover) and the 49ers (+13 ½) over Atlanta (soooo wrong). Greg picked the Chiefs at -6 versus the Titans (ouch to Greg, Chiefs lost) and the Texans at -6 versus the Jaguars (tanked this one also).
    • This Week:  Mike took Maryland at -1½ over Boston College in the Quick Lane Bowl and the Rams at -4 over the 49ers. Alan likes the Ravens at +5 over the Steelers and Raiders -4 over the Colts. Feeling dejected after going 0-2 last week, Greg went with the “two worst teams in football” and picked the Jets +16 ½ over the Patriots and the Niners at +4 over the Rams (“the Niners will lose by a field goal!) Trivia Quiz: The Quick Lane Bowl is backed by what company? It replaced what previous Bowl game?
Relatively Unimportant but Fun:
  • Today is Phileas Fogg Win A Wager Day. We’re in the casino business, so we feel it’s important to recognize any “Day” with the word “wager” in the title . . . especially a wager of over a million dollars regarding whether or not a feat can be accomplished in 80 days!
  • Friday is Festivus Day – we mention this in honor of the millions of Seinfeld fans and those who aren’t in the “It’s OK to Say Merry Christmas” club.
  • Saturday is Eggnog Day so we asked our Food and Beverage gurus how they roll on this subject and they said, hands down, the best is Francovich Eggnog made and bottled in Reno! Check this feature KTVN did on the subject two years ago and if you want to whip up a couple of gallons at home, here’s the recipe courtesy of Edible Reno-Tahoe.
  • Monday is National Whiners Day. Sorry, we don’t recognize whining . . . with the possible exception of Forty Niner fans, most of whom passed the whining stage and completed the five stages of grief by week seven!

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Jamie Rollins performs tonight, Just Us entertains Thursday through Saturday, there’s NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and Tyler Stafford appears next Tuesday and Wednesday. Just Us blends together the sounds of the Motor City and Oakland, CA to develop "Sweet, Grown & Sexy" sounds - music from the 60’s to the present. Aladdin handles lead vocal and percussions. He is joined by Les Carter on vocals and drums, Phil Weaver on vocals and guitar and Fred Williams on bass. Click here for the upcoming lineup of free entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.

In Our Restaurants
  • Today is National French Fried Shrimp Day. Since we serve Fried Shrimp in both Katie’s at the CVI and Bodines Restaurant, we asked our Purchasing Manager and Menu Engineer whether ours was Fried Shrimp or French Fried Shrimp – last time we bother them with a question like that during the busy holiday season!! So, wherever the fine line is drawn, enjoy what we offer . . .  and on Fridays and Saturdays in Katie’s, don’t miss the Roasted Prime Rib and Fried Shrimp Dinner special served with baked potato, vegetable and soup or salad for $14.99.
  • Wednesday is Italian Day/Night in Katie’s – three specials for $6.99 each! Check all the Katie’s Daily Specials at this link.

Kids Pay it Forward, Christmas Dinner to Take Home, Santa Crawl, More

Kids Pay It Forward with Gingerbread Houses: ‘Twas mayhem in the Valley Ballroom this past Monday as over a zillion kids were scurrying around at our CVI/Bodines/Sharkey’s Employee Family Christmas Party. One of the many fun activities was decorating gingerbread houses which were delivered yesterday to the Brookdale Gardnerville Assisted Living Facility. Lots of interest when we brought them in – including one schnauzer who had a “street level view” from his owner’s lap!

We'll do the Cooking,
You Enjoy Christmas Dinner at Home
Have Christmas Day Dinner at Home – We’ll Do the Cookin’
We’d love you to come to the CVI on Christmas Day and enjoy one of the Christmas Day Specials in CV Steak or Katie's. But, if a family gathering at home is more to your liking, how about letting us do the cooking!? The Inn's Turkey Christmas Dinner to Go for up to ten people includes a fully-cooked 18 - 20 pound turkey plus all the trimmings including mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans amandine, cranberry sauce, a pumpkin pie, rolls and butter all for $89.00 plus tax. The Roast Prime Rib of Beef Dinner to Go serves 8 – 10 people and includes mashed potatoes, beef au jus, creamed horseradish, green beans amandine, a pumpkin pie, bread and butter for $109.00 plus tax. Christmas Dinners to Go can be ordered in person at the Katie's cashier counter or call 775-783-6664 and ask for the Katie's supervisor. Orders may be placed until noon on Thursday, December 22 or until sold out and dinners will be available for pickup on Sunday, December 25 between 10 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Valley Ballroom doors just inside the hotel entrance. The turkey or prime rib will be hot and the rest is cooked and will simply need re-heating per the enclosed instructions.

Sorry, Jessica, We're Giving This All Away Monday
Ultimate Tailgate Package Giveaway Monday . . .  And you can still get in on it! Two or three more people will qualify this Monday for the drawing for the Ultimate Tailgate Package at halftime of the Panthers-Redskins game. Elf and Santa after a Little Crawling at Sharkey's
Sharkey’s Part of Saturday Santa Crawl – and it’s for two good causes, Austin's House & Carson Valley Community Food Closet! Here’s how the Gardnerville Santa Crawl works: bring a $10.00 donation to the JT Basque Bar & Dining Room, Battle Born Wine, Overland Restaurant & Pub, Buckaroos, The French Bar or Nevada Ugly and you’ll receive a participation ticket (no, not the same as a participation trophy!)  You can then enjoy drink specials at any or all of the participating businesses (Sharkey’s has a Jägermeister concoction) from 6 to 10 PM Friday. All the donations collected (you can go in for more than $10 if you wish) will be split between Austin's House & the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. Turn your ticket in at the end of the night to any of the bars to be entered for a drawing for raffle prizes! The Best Costume Contest will be at Buckaroos at 10 PM Saturday . . . but please be careful crawling back to Sharkey’s when you’re done. Dress Up! Spread Cheer! Merry Christmas!

  • Around the Sportsbook with Mike and Alan:

Mike picked Navy at -6½ over Army (lost that one outright) and the Steelers at -2½ (yep, they covered) over the Bills. Greg went with the “overs” (46½) on the Chief-Raiders (nope, only hit 34) game and the Falcons at -6 over the Rams (easy win).
    • This Week:  Alan likes the Cardinals at -2 ½ over the Saints and the Patriots at -3 over the Broncos. Mike tabbed Texas San Antonio (+7) over New Mexico in the New Mexico Bowl and (get ready for this one) the 49ers (+13 ½) over Atlanta. Greg’s picks are with two favorites, the Chiefs at -6 versus the Titans and the Texans at -6 versus the Jaguars

Food Drive Friday, Christmas Day Dining Specials, What Happened to Our Pool, More

Food Drive and Blood Drive Friday . . . We’ve pumped this the last few weeks so here are the basics: The KTVN Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive is Friday from 6 AM to 6 PM at the entrance to our RV Park and the Blood Drive runs from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM.  Santa will be arriving by Care Flight helicopter at 9:30 AM and in the video above we caught the Care Flight crew (great at their profession, not necessarily at singing) getting his Blue Sleigh ready in fair weather a few days ago at the Gardnerville base. If weather grounds the Blue Sleigh Friday, Santa will arrive by Red Sleigh from the East Fork Fire Protection District. Please stop by!

Christmas Day Dinner at the Inn:  CV Steak and Katie's are serving their regular menus plus Christmas Day SpecialsCV Steak will open at 4:30 pm and Christmas Day specials are a Garlic-Studded Slow-Roasted Prime Rib of Beef served with your choice of giant baked potato, garlic mashed potatoes, twice-baked potato or au gratin potatoes for $29; and Stuffed Fillet of Sole, stuffed with crab, shrimp and scallops and served with béarnaise and wild rice pilaf for $28. Christmas Day reservations are strongly recommended (basically a must) by calling 775-783-6650. Katie's is offering a Traditional Roasted Turkey Dinner from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Christmas Day with  giblet gravy, sage stuffing, fresh mashed potatoes, glazed yams, green beans Amandine, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, soup or fresh garden green salad, fresh bread and creamery butter all for $14.99. And yes, Katie’s will also be serving the usual Sunday Chandler Chicken Dinner Special on Christmas Day.

More About Christmas:
  • More Christmas Decorations are in the accompanying picture and here’s some interesting trivia:
    • There are a total of 15 Christmas Trees in the Carson Valley Inn including  themed trees such as Frozen, Disney, Cowboy and Wine! Why a wine-themed Christmas Tree? Santa made us do it after reading this Food and Wine article about pairing wine with cookies!
    • All the Christmas decorations around the Carson Valley Inn are original creations - most if not all by our chief elf, Eileen Knox!
    • The old-fashioned wooded theme Christmas Tree at Sharkey’s (see slide movie above) is 9 ½ feet tall, it took 2½  hours to create the top and 4 ½ hours to decorate.
  • A Toys for Tots box is located inside our hotel entrance – feel free to drop off a new unwrapped toy on your way in to check out the decorations.
  • Candy Cane Lane – our drive-by Christmas display – is lit up nightly through December. Pull in at the entrance between our big sign and the Carson Valley Market. Tune your radio to 89.9 and listen to music while you watch the elves and other characters!
What Caused This in our Indoor Pool??
No, We Didn't Find A Baby Ruth Bar Floating In Our Pool!  We kicked around whether this headline would offend anyone and decided anyone over 45 would totally get it; anyone under 35 wasn't even born yet . . . and it's hard to offend them anyway.  That left the 35 - 45 age group so, for you, we are referring to the classic "Doodie!" scene from the 1980 movie Caddyshack.  We took the picture a few days ago as workers were totally refurbishing the surface areas of our indoor pool and installing a new UV filtering system  . . . one of the many "behind the scenes" updates and improvements happening every year at the CVI.  It’s all part of  Mike Pegram's ongoing commitment to making sure we have the maintenance, furnishings, equipment and other tools to keep the CVI up-to-date and moving forward. As for the pool project, it will be finished in the next day or two and the pool will be open for our guests this weekend!

Let's Talk Sweets (seems like we do that a lot!): Tomorrow (Thursday) is Brownie Day and we make them every day in our bakery and you can buy ‘em at the Katie’s Bakery Counter.  Friday is National Pastry Day and - you guessed it - we also make pastries every day in our bakery and they are for sale at the Katie’s Bakery Counter or Jobs Perk. Wait, it keeps going: Saturday is Gingerbread Decorating Day and Monday is Gingerbread House Day. No, we don’t make gingerbread in our bakery but catch this: We have put together a few gingerbread houses and will have them available at our Employee and Family Christmas Party on Monday afternoon. One of the many kids’ activities will be decorating these gingerbread houses. And when they’re all done, we're taking them down to the Brookdale Gardnerville Assisted-Living Facility so their residents can enjoy them - probably for the first day or two by looking at them . . . but within a few days we imagine they will be devoured!

Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet NFL Football, NCAA Bowl Games, NBA and College Basketball and NHL Hockey.  Also on the board: futures bets on who will win the NCAA Football Championship, Super Bowl, NBA Championship, and NHL Stanley Cup.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $4,122 – pick all 15 NFL props straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours!
  • Around the Sportsbook with Mike and Allen and now Greg:
    • Last Week, 2-2: Mike picked the Dolphins at +3½ over the Ravens and Georgia State at + 6½  over Idaho . . . wrong on both. Alan tabbed the Packers at -6 over the Texans and the Lions at +5 over the Saints and he got ‘em both!
    • This Week:  Alan likes the Buccaneers at -2½ over the Saints and the Giants at +3½ over the Cowboys. Mike picked Navy at -6½ over Army and the Steelers at -2½ over the Bills. He wanted to pick the Saints, but has too much respect for Alan after last week’s results! Greg in our Sales Department has been watching these weekly picks from the sidelines and jumped in this week with the “overs” (46½) on the Chief-Raiders game and the Falcons at -6 over the Rams.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Steve Lord performs tonight, Justin Lee entertains Thursday, the John Dawson Band takes the stage Friday and Saturday, there’s NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and George Pickard appears next Tuesday and Wednesday. Justin Lee is an up-and-coming musician who has gone from playing in a cover band with his buddies to performing on the same stage as acts like The Band Perry, Parmalee and Jake Owen and he has performed at Night in the Country, Nevada’s largest country music festival. The John Dawson Band is a Reno based group of five fun-lovin' guys who like to play music and entertain with a variety of modern country and classic rock. According to John, “The Washoe County Parole board took matters into their own hands on a wistful spring evening in 1999, and placed these 5 repeat offenders in a working band, demanding we concentrate on Country Music.” Click here for the upcoming lineup of free entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.
