A Gift Idea, A Thank You, Holiday with a Hero, More in CVI Blog

Part of the CVI Family's Christmas Look
The Christmas trees, fireplace and other decorations in our hotel lobby make a great backdrop for a family holiday picture.  Since “a picture is worth 1000 words,” we’ve shown pictures of part of our family to demonstrate how it’s done. We hope to see you and your family here over the holidays and feel free to take as many pictures as you’d like in front of this setting or any of our Christmas decorations!

A Practical, Flexible & Versatile Gift Idea
Have local family or friends who might enjoy a nice dinner in CV Steak? Or how about out-of-town family or friends you’d like to have visit but just don’t have room for them in your home? Those are just two of the many situations that make CVI Gift Cards so useful and versatile!

Let’s go over the full list starting with the dining options: Katie's Country Kitchen, CV Steak and Job's Perk at the Carson Valley Inn; the restaurant at Bodines Casino; the Jackpot Cafe at Sharkey's Casino and Betsy's Big Kitchen in SlotWorld.  Gift cards are usable at all of the bars at all four of our properties and for accommodations in the Carson Valley Inn Hotel, Motor Lodge or RV Resort. Cards can also be used to purchase merchandise in Jobs Perk or gas/merchandise at the Carson Valley Market (redeem inside).  And when the summer season comes around, they can also be used towards tickets for concerts in TJ’s Corral.

Gift cards may be purchased at the Hotel Front Desk at the Carson Valley Inn or at the Guest Services counter at Bodines Casino, Sharkey's Casino and SlotWorld Casino. To buy them by phone, please call the CVI Hotel Desk at 775-783-6606 – we’ll even arrange to mail them if you wish.  Our Gift Cards do not expire, they may be used in increments and they are easily reloaded.  Sound good? Then solve your Christmas gift dilemma with a CVI gift card available in increments up to $500!

Share Your Christmas Food A Success!
What an incredible outpouring of support from the community last Friday at the 26th Annual KTVN Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive! Hundreds of cars and trucks brought most of the donations. Others came by helicopter, emergency vehicle, horseback and even by foot from those living close by. Thanks to the all generous donations of food and cash, many in our community will have meals when they otherwise might’ve gone hungry during the coming year!

Holiday With a Hero
Our sister properties SlotWorld Casino and Bodines Casinos are teaming up with the Holiday With A Hero organization this Saturday by donating all restaurant sales on December 15 to this very worthy cause.  Between 8 AM and 8 PM various members of the Sheriff's Office, Fire Department and Air National Guard will be on hand to "assist" our servers at both properties as they deliver your meals. Sponsored by the Carson City School District, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the Carson City Fire Department, the Holiday With A Hero program ensures underprivileged children in Carson City have a proper Christmas. The money raised this Saturday will be dispersed to designated and pre-qualified students as Walmart gift cards . . . and each recipient is escorted throughout the store on December 19 with a local Hero from the Carson City School District, Sheriff’s Office or Fire Department. According to Sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Gonzales, “SlotWorld made a huge impact last year and with the addition of Bodines this year Christmas 2018 will be even bigger”.  Sgt. Gonzales also indicated, “This event helps break down any barriers that come with our job. Sometimes these kids see us in a difficult situation in their homes or neighborhoods. Holiday With A Hero allows us to let our hair down and interact with the kids on a different more personal level."

Santa Crawl
The 10th Annual Gardnerville Santa Crawl is Saturday, December 22 from 7 to 10 PM and wristbands are available now for $10.00 at Battle Born Wine or DST Coffee. We suggest getting yours in advance so you can jump right in and enjoy the drink specials at the participating businesses during the “Crawl.” All donations will be split between Austin’s House & Carson Valley Community Food Closet. Watch for all the details in next week’s blog.
Gingerbread & Cookies
Another Gingerbread Cookie (?)
Gets Decorated!
  • Today is Gingerbread House Day.  Bet you thought we were going to tell you we have Gingerbread for sale at the Katie’s Bakery Counter and that   should come in and buy some? Nope - we don’t do gingerbread. You can blame the character in the green suit in the above Christmas picture taken in front of our lobby fireplace! However, we did find this young lady decorating a what looks like a gingerbread cookie at one of the recent Christmas parties here at the Carson Valley Inn. And since we can’t go without trying to “sell” something, now is the time to be thinking about booking your 2019 Christmas Party for your company, association or family. Just give Carrie a call at 775-783-6673.
  • Tuesday is Bake Cookies Day. Nothing fills the home with a more inviting aroma then hot, fresh cookies baking in the oven. On the other hand, it sounds like a lot of work to us. So if you’d like to skip the fuss and mess of baking cookies at home just stop by the Katie’s Bakery Counter (there, we worked it in!) We bake Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter and  Oatmeal Raisin cookies here daily as we do cakes, pies, pastries and many other desserts and sweets available in Job’s Perk, Katie’s and CV Steak! As for that aroma of fresh baked cookies? We deal with it daily – some days better than others and that’s why most of us would be well served by losing a few pounds!?

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Tyler Stafford tonight and Thursday, the John Dawson Band Friday and Saturday, NFL Football Sunday and Monday nights and Adam Bergoch next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Tyler Stafford’s songs often draw comparisons to songwriters such as John Mayer and Paul Simon delivered with a candor and immediacy reminiscent of John Lennon. The John Dawson Band is a Reno based group of five fun-lovin' guys who just like to entertain with a variety of modern country and classic rock. Adam Bergoch plays an acoustic guitar whilst mixing in effects from his abundance of digital pedals and singing along to some of the most popular songs, including Alternate Rock, Indie, Oldies, Dance, & even Rap.

Christmas Dining at the Inn
Good news: both CV Steak and Katie's are serving their regular menus plus holiday specials on Christmas Day, Monday, December 25!
  • We recommend reservations for CV Steak (775-783-6650) on Christmas Day and on any holiday. Christmas specials in CV Steak include Garlic-Studded Slow-Roasted Prime Rib of Beef served with your choice of giant baked potato, garlic mashed potatoes, twice-baked potato or au gratin potatoes for $29; and Stuffed Fillet of Sole, stuffed with crab, shrimp and scallops and served with béarnaise and wild rice pilaf for $28. Both CV Steak Christmas Day specials include vegetable, tableside-tossed house salad and fresh-baked sourdough baguette with creamery butter.  The Sunset Special will not be available on Christmas Day.
  • Katie's is offering a Traditional Roasted Turkey Dinner  from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Christmas Day with giblet gravy, sage stuffing, fresh mashed potatoes, glazed yams, green beans amandine, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, soup or fresh garden green salad, fresh bread and creamery butter all for $14.99.  Katie’s will not be serving the December Monday Chicken Schnitzel Special on Christmas Day.

Our Favorite Shot from Last Friday's Food Drive:
The KTVN Crew Waiting to Go Live from our Roof
Thank You for Two Successful Community Support Events
What a generous and gracious show of community support at the Carson Valley Inn and Slot World last weekend!
  • Final numbers for the KTVN Channel 2 Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive last Friday at the Carson Valley Inn are $58,341.00 in cash and checks and 262,469 pounds of food between donations dropped off that day and contributions made by community members through the Raley’s annual program. All this food and money went to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.
  • On Saturday, the Holiday with A Hero event at Slot World resulted in $10,000 being raised for this incredible Carson City program of providing holiday shopping sprees for low-income children with a first responder or community leader. This money was raised by a combination of proceeds for the day in Betsy's Big Kitchen plus additional contributions from attendees and a “let’s round it up” amount from Slot World.

Our Usual Tidbits - Of Course All Food!
Cupcakes - A New Batch Every Day
at Katie's Bakery Counter
  • Today is National Cocoa Day:  Why not stop by Job’s Perk and order one of our Hot Chocolate Drinks. We start with whole or nonfat milk, add three generous helpings of a special chocolate sauce made with just cocoa, vanilla and sugar. We heat it up using the milk steamer on our espresso machine and serve it with or without whipped cream. A great way to warm up on a cold day!
  • Friday is National Cupcake Day:  While the cupcakes pictured above were for a special kid’s party, the holiday-themed decorations seem to be more prevalent than not on the cupcakes for sale at the Katie’s Bakery Counter every day. Stop by and enjoy one for $1.99, three for $5 or place a special order!
  • Saturday is National Chocolate Covered Anything Day: The possibilities are not endless here at the CVI, but we do offer chocolate covered Long Johns in Job's Perk plus a variety of chocolate laced or covered items in Katie’s and a few chocolate deesserts in CV Steak. Our favorite? The CV Steak Profiterole au Chocolat; three puff pastries filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with a warm chocolate sauce – yum!
On the Sports Front
  • Our Guys Picks: A nice week for the guys picking four winners out of six plays.  This week Alan takes the suddenly hot 49’ers –2 against the Titans and Arkansas St. –3½ vs. Middle Tennessee St. (they have a football team?). Mike loves the Texans +11½ at Jacksonville and Troy –6½ versus North Texas.  Greg reluctantly takes the Steelers +2 ½ against the Patriots and the over of 46½ in the Chiefs – Chargers game.
  • Enjoy $2 Draft Beer during all Televised Pro and College (including Bowl Games) football games at the CVI - and our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM is at $4,133 this week. The parlay cards are just $5 each!
  • NFL hats, tee shirts, Budweiser merchandise and other prizes are given away in drawings during Monday Night Football at the CVI. Also, three tickets are distributed each week for the Ultimate Tailgate Party package which will be given away during the Monday Night Football game on December 18.
  • Monday Night Football Grid in our poker room every week – we start with four $40 prizes each week and add in any unclaimed prizes from the previous week. Only two people claimed squares last week so this coming Monday we’re giving away $70 for each of the first three quarters and the final score! Earn entries during live poker games this week ‘til all squares are claimed.
  • Place Your Bet: Place your bets on Pro Football, NCAA Bowl Games, NHL Hockey, Pro and College Basketball and Horse Racing. Futures on the board include winners for the 2018 Super Bowl (yes the Eagles moved a little), 2018 NCAA Basketball and Football Championships, 2018 NBA Championship and 2018 NHL Stanley Cup.
  • Sports and Race Betting: You can place and collect sports bets any time the Sports Book is open at the Carson Valley Inn or Bodines Casino. At Sharkey’s and Slot World, all sports betting is done at Guest Services. A winning sports bet placed at any of our four casinos can be cashed at any of our four casinos.  Horse Race bets can only be placed or cashed when the Race and Sports Book is open at the CVI or Bodines Casino.

Kids Pay it Forward, Christmas Dinner to Take Home, Santa Crawl, More

Kids Pay It Forward with Gingerbread Houses: ‘Twas mayhem in the Valley Ballroom this past Monday as over a zillion kids were scurrying around at our CVI/Bodines/Sharkey’s Employee Family Christmas Party. One of the many fun activities was decorating gingerbread houses which were delivered yesterday to the Brookdale Gardnerville Assisted Living Facility. Lots of interest when we brought them in – including one schnauzer who had a “street level view” from his owner’s lap!

We'll do the Cooking,
You Enjoy Christmas Dinner at Home

Italian Wednesdays, Cash Patrol, Entertainment, Sports, More at CVI

Cash Patrol Starts This Weekend! Free T-shirts, drawings, gifts for answering trivia questions (perhaps from info in this blog) correctly, cakewalks, balloon pop games and plenty of on-the-spot are all part of Cash Patrol starting this Friday. Want more details? So do we, but we'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds when the first Cash Patrol happens this Friday led by local MC/DJ/Entertainer Anthony Janssen. Will you win a prize or have an opportunity to participate in one of the zany antics? It's all about being in the right place at the right time!  The right place is the Carson Valley Inn casino and the right time is between 5 and 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through February 12! Also on tap Fridays and Saturdays this month: Slots Happy Hour Mystery Multipliers (3X-7X Points) from 4 to 6 p.m. and our $75,000 King of Cash Drawings at 5, 7 and 9 p.m.

New - Wednesday Italian Specials in Katie’s: During January you can count on three Italian Specials every Wednesday in Katie’s from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Today all three of the specials are $5.99 and your choices are Chicken Parmigiana served on a bed of spaghetti pasta with marinara sauce; Chicken Piccata served on a bed of spaghetti pasta with lemon caper butter sauce and mushrooms; and Meat Lasagna. All three specials are served with vegetables and garlic bread and you can add a cup of soup or a side salad for $1.50. In keeping with the Italian theme, Katie’s will have Italian Wedding Meatball Soup as one of the two choices Wednesdays in January.

Did you receive one of these?
The Gift Card Thing - One More Week!
We’re not really milking the Gift Card subject . . . After so many people received CVI Gift Cards
over the last few weeks, we started getting questions. So here are the answers to the three most common questions:
  • Where: Gift Cards can be used at the Carson Valley Inn, Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. Click here for all the uses.
  • How: Gift Cards are “kinda like” a debit card in that whatever amount you use on a given visit is deducted from the card balance and any remaining balance can be used the next time.
  • How Much: You can check the remaining balance on your Gift Card here

Cabaret Lounge Entertainment – No Cover, No Minimum – Free! John Palmore performs tonight, the Eric Hisaw Band entertains Thursday through Saturday nights, and Josh Budro returns Sunday through Wednesday.  Playing guitar since he was 13 years old, Eric Hisaw’s sound is influenced most notably by the Rolling Stones, Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan.  A true guitar hero with real writing talent, his songs are for the honest, modern working-class hero who is struggling to make ends meet, find some peace of mind and maybe a woman to rely on.  Like all great American music, Hisaw’s songs evoke a strong sense of place, from the small desert towns of New Mexico to the bustling streets of L.A. and back down the dusty trails of deep South Texas. Thanks again to Sarah Hauck of The Record Courier for interviewing Eric and posting this great article!

Race and Sports Book:
  • This week you can watch and bet the NFL Wild Card Games on Saturday and Sunday, the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday, Horseracing, NBA and College Basketball and NHL Hockey.
  • The PRO PK’EM jackpot has not hit yet so it now sits at $4,913 on this week’s progressive parlay card which will feature winners, totals and props on the four NFL Wild Card games this Saturday and Sunday.
  • This week could be your last chance to bet a long shot on who will win the Super Bowl. All 12 NFL Playoff teams are on the board and odds as of yesterday ranged from 25 to 1 for the Texans or Redskins down to 3 to 1 for the Panthers.
  • Sports: What We Can't Write Because It Isn't Right! That's right; apparently the AP Stylebook for 2015 has come up with the following: A team losing a game is not a “disaster.” Home runs are homers, not “dingers,” “jacks” or “bombs.” A player scored 10 straight points, not 10 “unanswered” points. If a football team scores two touchdowns and the opponent doesn’t come back, say it “never trailed” rather than “never looked back.” In short, avoid hackneyed words and phrases, redundancies and exaggerations. Seriously? We'll do our best (fingers crossed behind our back) to write according to their suggestions, but if you’re watching a game at the CVI, especially if you have a bet riding, say it anyway you want with as much emphasis, slang (consideration for others around, please) and enthusiasm as takes to sway the outcome!! Oh, the AP Stylebook would also insist we cite our source for the above quote which came from an article in the Columbia Journalism Review. Interesting this same article also mentions an apparently acceptable term defining what a team is doing when it is parking the bus!
As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Even Useful Tidbits and News

  • Because We Feel Like Mentioning It:
    • January is Soup Month - a great reason to remind you Katie's has two hot soups featured every day (remember, one of them is Italian Wedding Soup on Wednesdays)! January is also Oatmeal Month  - in addition to serving oatmeal in Katie's we can also meet the requests for most of the toppings (peanut butter is our favorite) suggested at this link.
    • Monday is Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day.  Assuming you are familiar with the term Morse code, and you are curious as to how you to spell your name or anything else, you can fumble around at this link.  To hear "Carson Valley Inn" in Morse code, click here. In case a wandering M.C. asks on Friday or Saturday, the Morse code was invented by Samuel Morse.
