Golf Season Soon, Blue Angel this Week, Chicken Dinner Brings $10K, More

Won't Be Long! Will You Be Joining Us?
Spring Stag Golf Outing Details Set
We can’t help but think about how green and lush our area golf courses will be after all of the steady but gentle “soak the ground” rain we’ve received during the last week. Good reason to roll out the details on our Spring Stag Golf Outing at the end of April. This 36-hole scramble with blind bogie scoring serves as our unofficial kickoff to the 2018 golf season which will see almost 100 different golf groups visit the Carson Valley Inn and play our areas courses. This year the two rounds of the Spring Stag will be at the Golf Club at Genoa Lakes and Toiyabe Golf Club (formerly Thunder Canyon and originally Lightning W). There’s a Thursday evening reception, golf on Friday and Saturday, a Saturday banquet and more . . . click here for more info or call Greg at 775-783-6615.

Are You Part of this
$5 Million Plus We Paid Out?
Actually, the amount is significantly in excess of Five Million Dollars but our accounting folks don’t want us publishing exact figures – actually it’s our marketing people, but that’s beside the point. Anyway, were talking about the total amount of Jackpots that we paid out during 2017 that triggered IRS reporting. This doesn’t count the millions more in payouts that fell under the reporting threshold . . . but again we’re straying from the point. If you won one of those reportable jackpots (if you did, we gave you a W-2G), you no doubt will be looking for a win-loss statement from the CVI for your gaming activity here during calendar year 2017. We can help you with that information on all gaming for which you used your INN Club card while playing.  However, there are only three ways you can make your request and they are explained on the form at this link. And please, for security purposes, we cannot send these reports by email. The request for these reports seem to come in heavy at the various tax deadlines, so we suggest you get the process started very soon and not get caught in the last minute rush.

Eating Chicken Pays Off
Elizabeth Came in For Chicken Dinner, Left with $10,000+
In this case we’re talking about the $5.99 Chandler’s Chicken Dinner served every Sunday from 2 PM in Katie’s.  Seems that Elizabeth N. comes in just about every Sunday to enjoy this very popular Katie’s special. This past Sunday – and for many Sundays to come – you can easily say that dinner was on us! You see, Elizabeth regularly spends a little time on the slots each Sunday. She was playing the Wealth of Dynasty slot which ironically provides a direct view of the entrance to Katie’s. Anyway, we’re sure she wasn’t looking at Katie’s when the bells started ringing to signify she had just won the Wealth – a $10,506 Jackpot.  Sure hope the boss doesn’t put a pencil to this and figure out this equates to over 1750 Chandler Chicken Dinners!

Double Blue Skies Thursday and Friday
It's just 9 months until the Blue Angels headline the 2018 Aviation Roundup at Minden -Tahoe Airport on October 13 & 14 but the planning is well underway. While the “Blues” undergo vigorous winter training 500 miles south at Naval Air Facility El Centro, the United States Navy flight demonstration squadron's Event Coordinator and Narrator will be arriving at Minden this Thursday in one of the team's trademark dark blue F/A-18C Hornets for advance planning meetings and media interviews.

Interesting Tidbits
  • Friday is Peach Melba Day. Closest we can come is Peach Pie which is one of the many pies, cakes and other pastries we make daily in our own bakery.
  • Tuesday is Appreciate a Dragon Day and we were amazed to find out how many slots we have at the CVI with some type of a Dragon theme.  There are a few different Dragon’s Law penny machines and the Dragon’s Law Twin Fever is an option on a few other slots. We have Dragon Link, Forbidden Dragons, The Great Pyramid games with a Dragon theme and also found Ultra Stack Dragon slots. We stopped looking when someone told us we were being watched by Puff the Magic Dragon!

Carolyn Dolan and Big Red tonight, Just Us Thursday thru Saturday and Tyler Stafford Tuesday and Wednesday. Carolyn Dolan can dive into powerful R & B, deliver a smooth jazz standard or a gentle country ballad.  For the last fifteen years, she has been performing with her rockin' blues and R & B band, Carolyn Dolan and Big Red. Just Us is a unique group of musicians who decided to blend together the sounds of the Motor City and Oakland, CA to develop "Sweet, Grown & Sexy" sounds - music from the 60’s to the present.  Aladdin handles lead vocal and percussions. He is joined by Les Carter on vocals and drums, Phil Weaver on vocals and guitar and Fred Williams on bass.   Tyler Stafford is a homegrown talent (Reno), whose songs often draw comparisons to songwriters such as John Mayer and Paul Simon delivered with a candor and immediacy reminiscent of a John Lennon ballad.

We don’t usually lead our weekly blog with our casino promotions but were giving away “a bunch” this month so here’s a quick rundown:
  • Free Meals Mondays and Wednesdays: Earn just 100 points (before any multipliers) on any Monday or Wednesday in January and swipe at the casino kiosk for a certificate for a free meal from our January Player’s Menu which includes our All-American Breakfast, any omelet, a cheeseburger or any of our six $7.99 Plates. Every Wednesday you’ll also earn entries for the Jan. 31 drawing for a Disneyland Family Admission for Four.
  • Free Sweatshirts Thursdays:  Since theoretically it’s cold in January (see the Soup article below), we’ll warm you up with a free CVI sweatshirt every Thursday (different color each week) as soon as you earn 150 points the same day. Again, you keep the points.

$25,551 Patricia A. Enlists Her Husband Vic to Display their Winnings
Of Course She Was Happy -
Wouldn't You Be with $25,000?!
Frequent CVI visitor Patricia A. was well into a Gold Bonus/Free Games frenzy on one of our Buffalo Gold Collection slots near the pit last Friday night when her frenzy level went up exponentially . . . one of those bonus spins won her a $25,551 payout thanks to the adrenaline boosting “Multiple Wins” feature!  Ecstatic? You bet she was! When asked if she wanted the winnings in cash or check, she pondered what she might need for the remainder of her visit and a little fun money and, as the picture verifies, opted for some of each! As for her husband Victor holding the cash portion, we asked him how much of that he got to keep. His answer? Probably the same as any smart husband whose wife had just won this much!

Looking for some other opportunities to pocket a sizable chunk that can only be won here at the CVI? We have two Lightning Link carousels and the Grand Jackpot on one is over $11,700 and the other is over $15,000. The Major Jackpot on our giant Buffalo Stampede slot is now over $22,400, the Super Sky Wheel Mega jackpot just climbed to $8,300, the Hot Shot Progressive has topped $20,500 and the Cash Locomotive Grand Jackpot exceeds $10,800.  Spreading out a little, the $99,000 Penny Progressive Jackpot can only be won at any of our four properties: the Carson Valley Inn, Sharkey’s Casino, Bodine’s Casino and Slot World Casino.

And if you want to go up against everyone in the state of Nevada, we also offer IGT’s popular Megabucks ($10,560,000 +), $5 Wheel of Fortune $1,050,000+), $1 Wheel of Fortune ($1,280,000+) and Quarter Wheel of Fortune ($374,000+).

Would Love to Know What Each is Thinking!
Eagles & Ag Filling Up
Our friends at the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce reported yesterday that the16th year of Eagles & Agriculture still has limited openings for the three largest elements of the event: The Thursday night Welcome Reception and Photo Exhibit on January 25, the Falconers Dinner on Friday, January 26 (in our Valley Ballroom) and the Ranch & Eagle Tour on Saturday morning followed by lunch in our Valley Ballroom. For specific information and reservations, click here.

Soups in Katie’s
Katie's Chicken Tortilla Soup
January is Soup Month which is not surprising since statistically it’s the coldest month of the year in most parts of our country including Northern Nevada.

No problem keeping warm here at the CVI as we serve two different house-made soups by the cup or bowl in Katie’s each day starting at 11 AM. Katie’s Navy Bean Soup has been a daily standard for over 30 years.  The rotation for January for the second soup of the day is Cream of Broccoli on Mondays, Chicken Tortilla on Tuesdays, Tomato Pesto on Wednesdays, Chicken Florentine on Thursdays, New England Style Clam Chowder on Fridays, Beef Barley on Saturdays and Potato Cheddar on Sundays.

While probably not technically a soup (Google the question and  you'll understand why we said probably), Katie’s also serves Beef and Bean Chili every day!

On the Sports Front
  • Our Guys Picks: The football season concluded with the Guys going 3 & 3. It was a season of great picks by our Sports Book Guys as Alan and Mike each had 20 wins and 14 losses. This 59% win percentage would make all sports gamblers proud. On the flip side the Sales Guy Greg ended the season with a 12 & 22 record to ensure he will keep his obviously much-needed day job. As the NFL playoffs approach all three of the guys wish you all the best with your bets. And be sure not to ask Greg for advise in this arena!
  • Enjoy $2 Draft Beer during all Televised Pro Football Playoff Games and the NCAA College football Championship Game. l bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM ended the regular season at $4,551 – but we will give it away, so read on. This week’s Progressive Pro PK'EM parlay card has 15 props for the 4 NFL playoff games on Saturday and Sunday: the winner and over/under for each of the four games plus seven props.  The procedure remains the same: it’s just $5 per card, play as many cards as you like, pick all 15 and you win the jackpot. And remember that two of the games are on Saturday this weekend, so the cut off is 1 PM on Saturday for playing this week’s Progressive Pro PK'EM.
  • NCAA Championship Game Football Grid: We’re giving away $50 for each of the first three quarters and the final score for the January 8 game! Earn entries during live poker games this week ‘til all squares are claimed.

Free Entertainment

Cliff and Dave are powerhouse singer/gospel drummer Cliff Porter and southern-fried singer/guitarist Dave Berry, often seen fronting the band Jelly Bread. The duo provides an evening of sultry R&B, funk and swinging rock ’n’ roll. The Blues Monsters is a popular red-hot blues band with a powerfully unique combination of R&B, funk, jazz, and Chicago-style blues. Whether paying respects to the masters of traditional blues, or rockin' out other tunes, The Blues Monsters get the whole house up and dancing!  Carolyn Dolan can dive into powerful R & B, deliver a smooth jazz standard or a gentle country ballad.  For the last fifteen years, she has been performing with her rockin' blues and R & B band, Carolyn Dolan and Big Red.

Free T-shirts, drawings, gifts for answering trivia questions (perhaps from info in this blog) correctly, cakewalks, balloon pop games and plenty of on-the-spot are all part of Cash Patrol starting this Friday. Want more details? So do we, but we'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds when the first Cash Patrol happens this Friday led by local MC/DJ/Entertainer Anthony Janssen. Will you win a prize or have an opportunity to participate in one of the zany antics? It's all about being in the right place at the right time!  The right place is the Carson Valley Inn casino and the right time is between 5 and 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through February 12! Also on tap Fridays and Saturdays this month: Slots Happy Hour Mystery Multipliers (3X-7X Points) from 4 to 6 p.m. and our $75,000 King of Cash Drawings at 5, 7 and 9 p.m.
cash prizes

New - Wednesday Italian Specials in Katie’s: During January you can count on three Italian Specials every Wednesday in Katie’s from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Today all three of the specials are $5.99 and your choices are Chicken Parmigiana served on a bed of spaghetti pasta with marinara sauce; Chicken Piccata served on a bed of spaghetti pasta with lemon caper butter sauce and mushrooms; and Meat Lasagna. All three specials are served with vegetables and garlic bread and you can add a cup of soup or a side salad for $1.50. In keeping with the Italian theme, Katie’s will have Italian Wedding Meatball Soup as one of the two choices Wednesdays in January.

Did you receive one of these?
The Gift Card Thing - One More Week!
We’re not really milking the Gift Card subject . . . After so many people received CVI Gift Cards
over the last few weeks, we started getting questions. So here are the answers to the three most common questions:
  • Where: Gift Cards can be used at the Carson Valley Inn, Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. Click here for all the uses.
  • How: Gift Cards are “kinda like” a debit card in that whatever amount you use on a given visit is deducted from the card balance and any remaining balance can be used the next time.
  • How Much: You can check the remaining balance on your Gift Card here

Cabaret Lounge Entertainment – No Cover, No Minimum – Free! John Palmore performs tonight, the Eric Hisaw Band entertains Thursday through Saturday nights, and Josh Budro returns Sunday through Wednesday.  Playing guitar since he was 13 years old, Eric Hisaw’s sound is influenced most notably by the Rolling Stones, Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan.  A true guitar hero with real writing talent, his songs are for the honest, modern working-class hero who is struggling to make ends meet, find some peace of mind and maybe a woman to rely on.  Like all great American music, Hisaw’s songs evoke a strong sense of place, from the small desert towns of New Mexico to the bustling streets of L.A. and back down the dusty trails of deep South Texas. Thanks again to Sarah Hauck of The Record Courier for interviewing Eric and posting this great article!

Race and Sports Book:
  • This week you can watch and bet the NFL Wild Card Games on Saturday and Sunday, the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday, Horseracing, NBA and College Basketball and NHL Hockey.
  • The PRO PK’EM jackpot has not hit yet so it now sits at $4,913 on this week’s progressive parlay card which will feature winners, totals and props on the four NFL Wild Card games this Saturday and Sunday.
  • This week could be your last chance to bet a long shot on who will win the Super Bowl. All 12 NFL Playoff teams are on the board and odds as of yesterday ranged from 25 to 1 for the Texans or Redskins down to 3 to 1 for the Panthers.
  • Sports: What We Can't Write Because It Isn't Right! That's right; apparently the AP Stylebook for 2015 has come up with the following: A team losing a game is not a “disaster.” Home runs are homers, not “dingers,” “jacks” or “bombs.” A player scored 10 straight points, not 10 “unanswered” points. If a football team scores two touchdowns and the opponent doesn’t come back, say it “never trailed” rather than “never looked back.” In short, avoid hackneyed words and phrases, redundancies and exaggerations. Seriously? We'll do our best (fingers crossed behind our back) to write according to their suggestions, but if you’re watching a game at the CVI, especially if you have a bet riding, say it anyway you want with as much emphasis, slang (consideration for others around, please) and enthusiasm as takes to sway the outcome!! Oh, the AP Stylebook would also insist we cite our source for the above quote which came from an article in the Columbia Journalism Review. Interesting this same article also mentions an apparently acceptable term defining what a team is doing when it is parking the bus!
As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Even Useful Tidbits and News
  • Old Gambling Hall Feel Tonight! Earn 100 base points today and get your choice of a pack of Marlboro Red or Gold cigarettes or a 200 ml bottle of Jaegermeister liquor.  Same thing next Wednesday except the liquor choice is Fireball.
  • Quail Friday, Prime Rib Saturday, King Crab Sunday in CV Steak:  Our Friday special in CV Steak is Roasted Stuffed Quail with Prosciutto, wild rice and plum port glaze for $28.00. Saturday night’s special in CV Steak is Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sunday's special is one pound of King Crab Legs for $32. Both specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato (au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked), tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread.
  • Monthly Blackjack Tournament Tuesday: Our Blackjack Tournaments are held on the second Tuesday of each month with a $25 buy-in and all entry fees and re-buys going into the prize fund. Signups are from 5 to 6 p.m. on the day of the tournament and play starts at 6:00 p.m.
  • Because We Feel Like Mentioning It:
    • January is Soup Month - a great reason to remind you Katie's has two hot soups featured every day (remember, one of them is Italian Wedding Soup on Wednesdays)! January is also Oatmeal Month  - in addition to serving oatmeal in Katie's we can also meet the requests for most of the toppings (peanut butter is our favorite) suggested at this link.
    • Monday is Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day.  Assuming you are familiar with the term Morse code, and you are curious as to how you to spell your name or anything else, you can fumble around at this link.  To hear "Carson Valley Inn" in Morse code, click here. In case a wandering M.C. asks on Friday or Saturday, the Morse code was invented by Samuel Morse.

Win A Winter Weekend at CVI, Antiques Show, New Trails Video, More

Carson Valley Trails: Hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders all have a a variety of trails to enjoy in, around, and overlooking the beautiful Carson Valley. The latest Carson Valley Rider video from the Carson Valley Visitors Authority gives a visual overview . . . and trail maps and more information are available on the Carson Valley Trails Association website. Naturally, the Carson Valley Inn is right in the heart of this system and the perfect "base" for a recreational visit to our area!

It’s Happening in January at the CVI!
When you hold your event at the CVI we always try to help get the word out in this blog, in our Carson & Valley Voice newspaper mailer and through our Social Media – all at no extra charge. Here are just a couple of upcoming events:
  • Antique Show, Sale & Appraisal: This Saturday & Sunday. Contact Marsha Williams at 775-782-4951 for more information. Admission is $2.50 and part of this fee benefits the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra.
  • Soroptimist Savor the Flavor: Saturday, January 24. Contact Jeri Johnson at 775-771-6432 for tickets.
Win A Winter Weekend for Two at the Carson Valley Inn!
How would you like to stay at the Carson Valley Inn on the weekend after Super Bowl for free? That's a great time to visit our area for any of the many winter sports available in the nearby Sierra range: Skiing (Heavenly's Nevada side lodges are less than a half hour drive), snowmobiling, snowshoeing or whatever your favorite activity. Or, kickback and enjoy a relaxing weekend get-a-way with great food, entertainment and some casino fun. We'll provide a Deluxe room for two for Friday and Saturday nights, February 6 and 7 plus $100 in Dining Credit for use during your stay in any of our restaurants . . . the winter recreation - or the kicking back and relaxing part - is up to you. To enter to win this complementary weekend visit, simply click here and send us an email with your name. We'll choose a winner on January 20 and announce the winner in our blog on Wednesday, January 21. One entry per email address, please.

Football and More Sports This Weekend at the Inn
With the NFL Divisional Playoffs this Saturday and Sunday, and College Football National Championship on Monday, we'll have three days of exciting football action at the CVI. Throw in a full schedule of NBA basketball games, hundreds of NCAA college games, horse racing around the country (see Tidbits section below), NHL Hockey and the resumption of the PGA Tour with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Maui . . . and you have many opportunities to watch, bet and enjoy sports at the CVI. The Big Screen in Cabaret Lounge will have the "game of the hour" and three dozen more TVs will be carrying sports action in the Cabaret Lounge, Casino Bar, Table Games Area, CV Steak Bar and Poker Room. And if you get hungry while you're watching at the CVI, no need to get up - we'll deliver any of our mouthwatering bar munchies right to your seat while you keep on watching!

Sports Car, Jet Fighter or Video Slot?  Here's the answer to last week's question: it's the new Sphinx video gaming device located near the casino bar. Our slot techs gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how the 3D works and a full tour of the visually stimulating high-definition 3D bonus scenes complete with all the enhancements including rumbling, vibration and sound. We tried to capture it on a video . . . but the 3D just doesn't come out and the vibration made it difficult to steady the camera. This is a truly an incredible multi-sensory experience unlike no other slot device we've seen! The entertainment value is reason enough to give it a try . . . and winnings are a welcome extra!

As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Even Useful Tidbits and News –A Little More Than Usual This Week:
  • Monthly Blackjack Tournament: the first in our series of 2015 monthly blackjack tournaments is Tuesday in the table games area of our casino. It's just $25 to get in and all the initial buy-ins and all re-buys go into the prize pool. There's usually $1000-$1500 up for grabs with 50% of the pot going to first place, 30% for second and 20% forthird. The $25 entry fee is worth the entertainment value of the tournament . . . Win, place, or show and you'll have more than your original investment back in your pocket!
  • Poker Room Squares Pool: the crew in the poker room always has some little "extra" going on and this Monday it's a Squares Pool for the NCAA football championship game.
