Our "Starting 5" of Bar Snacks, A Thanksgiving Dinner Heads Up, A New Way to Pick Football, More

Bill Henderson Shows Comedian Brian Lee "The Hook" Nevada Style!
Comedy Coming!
As Tim Parsons says in his story about our upcoming Comedy Show in this article on Tahoe Onstage:  Brian Lee transitioned from a fighting man to a funny man. “I entered the Army four days before the first Gulf War,” he said. “It ended 100 hours later. That’s no coincidence.” After 24 years with both the Army and Navy, Lee now is an 18-year comedy veteran. His four-comic troupe is called Core 4 Comedy and it kicks off the Veterans Day weekend with an appearance on Saturday, Nov. 10 in our Valley Ballroom. Joining Brian are Host Jeff Anderson, Special Guest Luke Westberg and Feature Act Andy Picarro. Just $20 for the four-barreled dose of laughs and fun . . . buy your tickets (just $20) online or at our hotel desk!

NBA Returns – Here’s Our Starting 5
With the start of the NBA regular season yesterday, we’re naming our “starting five” bar snacks you can have delivered to your seat whether you’re watching basketball, football, or any other sport in the cabaret lounge, seated at the cabaret bar or gaming! While these snacks don’t photograph as well as real NBA players, they all taste great! The upper left is the Breakfast Burrito which also includes a free Bloody Mary or Budweiser draft, all for $5.99. The Bagel Sandwich is in the upper center – a fried egg, your choice of sausage patty or bacon and cheddar cheese on a toasted bagel served with hash brown patties for $5.99. The upper right is the Pound of Buffalo Wings with celery and ranch dressing for $7.99. In the lower left is our Cheese Quesadilla with sausage and jalapenos for $5.99. And in the lower right, Two Beef Tacos with salsa for $4.99.  A good starting five is only as effective with solid bench players. So, not pictured are our Hamburger or Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and American cheese on a sesame seed bun for $7.99 and our Chicken Strips and Fries basket for $5.99.

Football at the Inn
His Appearance Drove One of "Our Guys' Picks!
  • Our Guys Picks!  Another week with a 3–5 record so let’s see how these picks fair for the coming weekend: Mike is again going the college route but since he went 0-2 last week he’s trying a new approach and making his picks based on mascots he likes. To that end, he’s taking the Minnesota Golden Gophers +3½ versus the Nebraska Corn Huskers and the Oregon Ducks +2½ playing the Washington State Cougars. Steve thinks the NFL high-scoring will continue and laid the following two choices of on our desk: over 54½ for the Giants/Falcons game and over 58 ½ on the Bengals/Chiefs game.  Greg, who might as well just throw darts at the board, is going all-New York with the Jets +3½ against the Vikings and the Giants +6 over the Falcons.  Finally, diehard Eagles fan Alan jumped in with over 45½ on the Eagles/Panthers game and the Buccaneers -3½ vs. the Browns.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM jackpot jumped to $3,320 for this week . . . play a $5 card and it’s yours if you pick all 15 games. If more than one of you “hits” them all, the pot is split. If no one hits it, the amount goes higher next week.
  • Monday Night Football Poker Room Grid:  Squares are worth $56 each for this coming Monday’s Giants/Falcons game. You have to be present to win and any unclaimed winnings roll to the following week. Check the details on this page.
  • Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI.
  • The Board is Jammed! This week you can bet NCAA and NFL Football, NHL Hockey, NBA Basketball, the Baseball ALCS and NCLS, Canadian Football League, the Sunday NASCAR Hollywood Casino 400 and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship, the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2019 Stanley Cup and the 2019 NBA Championship.

#WhyCV Contest Starts Today: Submissions can  now be made for the #WhyCV Contest sponsored by the Carson Valley Visitors Authority and Carson Valley Times. Gather your favorite photo (like the one above), video or written story depicting why Carson Valley has carved out a special place in your heart. Prizes include an iPad, a GoPro, smartphone camera lenses, and a variety of gift certificates to the best in local dining – including CV Steak of course! All the details are on this page and we hope you’ll include the CArson Valley Inn if we are part of your story on how you came about visiting or moving here!

Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet NFL Football, the remaining NCAA Bowl Games, NBA, College Basketball and NHL.  Also on the board: futures bets on who will win the NCAA Football Championship, Super Bowl, NBA Championship and NHL Stanley Cup.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $4,395 – pick all 15 NFL props straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours! And if no one hits this week, we will carny this over to the NFL playoffs.
  • Around the Sportsbook with Mike, Alan and Greg:
    • Last Week, 3-3: Mike skunked as he took Maryland at -1½ over Boston College (B.C. won) in the Quick Lane Bowl and the Rams at -4 over the 49ers (seriously, did anyone bet the Niners to actually win?). Alan had the Ravens at +5 over the Steelers (got it by 1 point) and the Raiders at -4 over the Colts (another win). Greg got the Niners at +4 over the Rams and was “off by a mile” on the Jets at +16 ½ over the Patriots.
    • Last Week Trivia Quiz: The Quick Lane Bowl is backed by the Detroit Lions. It is a de facto replacement for the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. The Ford Motor Company serves as title sponsor of the game through its auto shop brand Quick Lane.
    • This Week:  Mike likes Oklahoma State at +3 over Colorado and the Clemson Tigers (+3 ½) over Ohio State. Alan’s going pro on his picks: Raiders to beat Denver in a pick ‘em game and the Dolphins at +9 ½ over the Patriots. (Per Mike, “there’s still fight in them there fish!”)  Greg tapped the Giants at +8 over the Redskins and (get ready) the  “overs" on the Falcons-Saints game at 56!
    • Trivia: Only about 17% of NFL games have a point total over 56 points. The highest point total in an NFL game was 113 points when Washington beat the N.Y. Giants 72 - 41 on Nov. 27, 1966.
Relatively Unimportant but Fun: Some people make lists. Still others compile lists of lists. Then there are those who find an article like this: The Master List of Year End Lists - over 350 of 'em! We certainly don’t have time for all this so we "borrowed" this link from an update Bill Chernock from the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce sent to Chamber members yesterday. How did he find the time? We suspect he plans on picking up time this Saturday on Leap Second Time Adjustment Day! What did all these list makers do before the internet provided a forum for publishing such lists?

Planning a Stay at the CVI? You will always get the best rate by booking directly with the Carson Valley Inn either online or by calling our Reservation Department directly at 775-783-6629 or 800-321-6983.

Christmas at the CVI: Lights, Action, Food and a Last Minute Gift Idea!

CVI's Annual Transformation to the Christmas Spirit!
Ah, the visual beauty of the Christmas spirit at the Carson Valley Inn! Over 500 man-hours spread over 3-4 intense weeks go into creating the Inn's Christmas look and feel each year . . . here's  just a little piece of the story.
The activity starts right after Halloween - let's say the Monday after the Nevada Day weekend. Our Engineering Department staff makes multiple trips to our off property warehouse to retrieve all of the indoor and outdoor decorations, props, lights and other materials that were stored the previous January.
Eileen Knox - CVI's Decorating Mastermind
The indoor decorating project is then taken over by our Executive Office Manager, Eileen Knox.  Everything is unpacked, cleaned, fluffed, checked for damage, and refurbished and/or discarded if necessary. Eileen buys or orders replacement products where needed and, each year, creates new decorations or a new theme for an existing decoration base. All this takes room, so just about every nook and cranny of office space, storage rooms, and holding areas are used. With the assistance of Lance Draucker, one of our groundskeeping staff, Eileen then starts the indoor decorating process which, over a period of three weeks, has her averaging over 15,000 steps a day on her Fitbit, making dozens of trips up and down stairs and ladders each day, and doing a whole lot of stretching and reaching as the decorations go up, the ornaments go on and the lights bring them all to life.
Lance Draucker - Our Chief Decorating Elf
When not helping Eileen with the inside decorating, Lance is installing all of the outside lights along with his sidekick Robin Edwards. When you add up the lighting on our building, all of the trees along Candy Cane Lane, and the lights on the trees and other base structures along Highway 395, there are well over 10,000 bulbs of various shapes and sizes. Actually, we’d love to have someone volunteer to go out and count them! No matter what the number, that’s a lot of light strip stringing, plenty of ladder moving and climbing and considerable time 15 to 35 feet above the ground on our ManLift . . . With some spectacular views on warmer clear days and some tense moments on cold and breezy days!
Meanwhile, three of our engineering staff (Randy Ross, Larry Stewart and whoever else is handy each day) are unloading, testing, repairing and refurbishing the two large pallets of static and moving pieces and parts that make up Candy Cane Lane. The installation process then starts and, whatever it takes, is always completed so we can “flip the switch” to light up Candy Cane Lane the day after Thanksgiving and keep it running nightly through Christmas. Sometimes the process goes smoothly in balmy fall weather. Often parts need to be ordered and snow needs to be moved out of the way (sometimes more than once).
We asked Eileen why she keeps volunteering for such a wear-and-tear-on-your-body job each year (she’s been doing it for 19 or 20 years). “For starters, I’m very juvenile - that’s why you see so much Disney influence - and I love the flexibility I have to expand and create each year.  More importantly, it is so gratifying to have so many children and senior citizens look at our decorations with broad smiles.  A crowning moment was having a senior couple, sitting on one of the couches in the hotel lobby, tell me they can’t physically do the work necessary to decorate like this in their own home anymore and they so much appreciate what we do to decorate for Christmas at the Carson Valley Inn.
We also asked Eileen if she had any trouble getting approval to spend more money each year on new and replacement decorations. Her answer was simple, “not at all, I really think our owner is a kid at heart!”
What happens when Christmas passes? It all has to be taken down, packed and returned to storage . . . another 300+ hours of hard work! So, soak it all in, take as many pictures as you like, and Merry Christmas!

Gift Cards Are A Versatile Last Minute Gift: Whether you wrap them yourselves or present them in the envelope and "carrier" we provide, CVI Gift Cards are an excellent Christmas gift . . .  or a "thank you" to someone who’s helped you out! We make it easy for you to purchase CVI gift cards and their versatility plays out in that they can be used at the Carson Valley Inn, Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. We have all the details on one page as to how to buy cards in person or by phone, all their different uses, and how to check the balance on existing gift cards. And here’s a point to ponder: A $50 gift card could easily let someone have breakfast at Sharkey’s, lunch at Bodines, and dinner at the Carson Valley Inn – all in the same day!

Christmas Day at the CVI:
  • Katie’s Christmas Dinner Specials (Traditional Roasted Turkey Dinner or Apple Wood Smoked Molasses and Five Peppercorn Crusted Pork Loin) are served from 11:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. all regular menu items will also be available. • On the NFL front, the CVI crew is watching a few games with interest:  Thursday’s Chargers-Raiders game could be the last game in Oakland for the rumored-to-be-moving Raiders; Saturday night’s Redskins-Eagles game could decide the NFL East winner; Sunday morning’s Patriots-Jets game has impact on whether New York will have a playoff team this year; and Monday night’s Bengals-Broncos game has big playoff implications for both teams as they battle in the last Monday Night Football game of the season! Bet ‘em here, watch ‘em here!

Cabaret Lounge Entertainment – No Cover, No Minimum – Free!
