Live Comedy Returns, More from the Carson Valley Inn

Brian Lee, Carlos Rodriguez, Kris Tingle and Key Lewis
Live Comedy Returns Saturday, November 23!
Look for loads of laughs and patriotism at the CVI on Saturday, November 23 when Live Stand-Up Comedy returns to our Valley Ballroom! With the date falling between Veteran’s Day on November 11 and the Annual Wreaths Across America Day on December 14, it’s quite appropriate that the four comedians lined up to entertain have all either been in the military or performed extensively overseas for our military. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased starting at noon this Friday, October 11 online at www.carsonvalleyinn.com or at the Carson Valley Inn hotel desk.  The show starts at 8:00 PM and is for audiences 21 or over.

Headliner Brian Lee tackles topics like drinking, relationships, lousy day jobs, family life, and the possibility of a new religion. In addition to being a veteran of the stage, he is also a Veteran of the U.S. military with a combined 24 years between the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.  Co-feature act Key Lewis is a high energy, improvisational, storytelling, multiple personality nutcase!  His comedic stories about his childhood, family, and unusual views of relationships, make Key simply a joy to watch. Key also served in the United States Navy. The second co-feature comedian Kris Tinkle has become a regular on the New York City standup scene since beginning his career in San Francisco. Kris has performed multiple USO tours in Iraq, Kuwait and Japan for the U.S military.  The evening’s host Carlos Rodriguez has headlined for our military troops overseas. In a fun and relatable way his observational humor touches beyond daily occurrences to deeply rooted memories of his childhood, views on the simplest ideas and the most off beat subject matter.

Let's Talk Turkey as In
Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner to Go
In answer to many of you who have asked in Katie’s, on social media, by email and by phone: Yes, we are going to offer Thanksgiving Turkey Dinners To Go for 8 – 10 people. And Yes . . . you will be able to place your order very soon. But Wait – There’s More: We’ll have all the details in next week’s blog and we ask you to read carefully as we will be making some changes for this year and we think you’ll be pleased!

From the Sports & Race Book
  • Sports Book Mike’s Musings:
    • Favorites went 7-8 against the spread.  Six dogs won.
    • There's another game in London this week: Carolina vs. Tampa Bay has an early start this Sunday - 6:30 AM our time. Since we don’t open until 8 AM Sunday, be sure to place any action on this game before we close on Saturday.
    • Here’s another installment of "how could you bet them?" The Redskins are at Miami this week.  There will probably not be much action (or interest) in a game like that – but give us a shot if you have a hunch!
    • Popular sayings overheard in the book this week: "The Pack is Back" (no, certainly not the Wolf Pack), "The Niners have rarely been finer", "Why'd they run that play?"
    • Our Pro Pick’em Progressive Jackpot is at $3,187 this week. Pick all 15 NFL winners on our weekly $5 Parlay Card and it’s yours. Each week it is not “hit,” the jackpot climbs based on the collective contest play at the CVI, Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino.
  • Fun Forty Niners Fodder: The Niners have two lopsided wins against the two Ohio NFL teams (Bengals & Browns) so far this season. In these two games alone:
    • The Niners scored 72 points, opponents 20. In all 16 games in 2018 the Niners scored 342 points and their opponents scored 435.
    • The Niners rushed for 534 yards. In all 16 games in 2018 they rushed for 1902 yards.
    • The Niners had 1018 total yards. In all 16 games in 2018 they had 5769 yards.
  • Football Extras:
    • $2 Coors Light draft at the Casino Bar or in the Cabaret Lounge during all televised NFL and College Games.
    • A couple of Free NFL Hats given away for each of the teams playing every Monday Night Football Game.
    • Bar Snacks Delivered to Your Seat while you watch or play. Get the full menu and pricing at this link!
    • Poker Room Squares Pool: Earn squares as you play in live poker games during the week. Each week we kick in $160 and the payout is on the Monday Night Football Game – $40 to the winners of the first three quarters and the final score. Any unclaimed quarters roll to the next week and for the October 14 Lions/Packers game it’s up to $113 a quarter!!
    • Seasonal Action on the board includes NFL and NCAA Football, the Major League Baseball Playoffs, NHL Hockey, Canadian Football, WNBA Basketball Championships, Horse Racing and this Sunday’s NASCAR Monster Energy Series 1000Bulbs.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
  • Futures Bets on the board include: 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup, 2019 World Series, 2020 NCAA Football Championship, 2020 Super Bowl, 2020 NCAA College Basketball, 2020 NBA Championship and 2020 Stanley Cup.

  • Desserts are special every night of the week in CV Steak but we definitely recommend leaving room for dessert this Monday ‘cause it’s Dessert Day.  We’ll skip the sales pitch about all the great desserts we serve in CV Steak and cut right to this anonymous quote, “If you must choose between dinner and dessert, eat dessert first. You can always eat dinner later or pack it up and take it home.
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge

Freedom Games, Free Bingo, Week One NFL Thoughts, More from the Carson Valley Inn

Freedom Games
You’ve probably seen the Freedom Games message on our big outside sign. We’ve had them on the casino floor (marked with balloons) for a couple of weeks and here’s what it’s all about:  Twenty of our single-game video slots have been converted over to a new IGT platform which gives you the choice to play any one of 4 to 6 (for now) different games. We call them Freedom Games because you definitely have more freedom: you choose which of the games you wish to play, you can change games at the same machine without having to “cash out” and start over and you have less need to get up and move around.  In the process of installing this concept we added 38 new game themes from IGT without taking away any of your favorites!

Here’s another direct player benefit already in place and we’ll use the Fortune Coins video slot as is an example. Prior to Freedom Games we just had one of these popular slots on our floor. Seemed to always be somebody wanting to play Fortune Coins but our only one was in use. Previously, we would’ve had to purchase more Fortune Coins machines. Now, the Fortune Coins theme is available on four or five of our Freedom Games.

When new games come out from IGT each month, it’s a much simpler process to get them in front of you quickly. In the past, we’d have to decide which games to order, how many to order and which games would go away in the process. Now, we have access to the full IGT library of game themes – all the existing and the new as soon as they come out.  Adding a new game or more of a popular game to our floor is easy. No more moving machines around, changing hardware, screen glass or anything else. Once we get a theme from IGT, we can upload it to one or more of our Freedom Games and “make it live” as they say. If your collective play dictates that we should have a particular theme available on more of our slots, that decision can be quickly made and implemented. And, in doing all this, we don’t have to “get rid” your favorite game in the process!

Ask any of our slot or customer service folks for the location of or more information on the Freedom Games.

This Week’s Promotions Lineup

From the Sports & Race Book
  • NFL Week One Thoughts: Mike in the Sports and Race Book penned a few thoughts after the first weekend of NFL Football:
    • "Did you see that?" is a common refrain in the world of sports betting.  The Colts' Malik Hooker made a great one handed interception in the end zone, which did not impact the outcome, as his team still lost... but, it preserved their covering the spread.  High 5's all around, unless of course one had bet the Chargers.
    • There were a couple of games that were of little initial interest that looked to be out of reach at half time.  The Bills and Jets ended up in a close contest that a lucky few must have enjoyed.  And the Lions/Cardinals made it to overtime, where the suspense was all about whether the Lions would be successful in their attempt to give the opponent a victory - nope, it ended in a draw.
    • Favorites went 6-9-1 in the first week with 4 dogs actually winning.
    • Our Pro Pick’em Progressive Jackpot is at $2,630 this week. Pick all 15 NFL winners on our weekly Parlay Card and it’s yours. The Payout goes up each week if it is not “hit” based on the collective contest play at the CVI, Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino.
Payout is on the Monday Night Football Game - $40 cash to the winners of the first three quarters and the final score.
  • Seasonal Action on the board includes NFL and NCAA Football, Major League Baseball, Canadian Football, WNBA Basketball Horse Racing and this Sunday’s NASCAR Monster Energy Series South Point 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
  • Futures Bets on the board include: 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup, 2019 World Series, 2020 NCAA Football Championship, 2020 Super Bowl, 2020 NCAA College Basketball, 2020 NBA Championship and 2020 Stanley Cup.
Special Days This Week
Seafood Linguini
  • Friday is National Peanut Day. We had no idea how many recipes there are for peanut sauce until we googled it. Got way too confusing for us, so we’re just going to Katie’s on Friday and ordering a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich accompanied by a cup of Katie’s traditional Friday favorite: Clam Chowder!
  • Sunday is Linguini Day. Apparently Linguini warrants its own “day” because, next to spaghetti, it is one of the most popular pastas. You can get out the old pasta machine and make your own linguini at home . . . but that’s not our approach. It’s too darn simple to just make a reservation at CV Steak and order the Seafood Linguini served with shrimp, scallops and diced lobster in your choice of a lemon butter sauce or spicy Pomodoro sauce. Seriously, doesn’t that sound like much better approach!
  • Sunday is Double Cheeseburger Day. Single or double, good reason to enjoy the “Cheeseburger Humor” of 1978 in this scene from Saturday Night Live! And of course you can enjoy a Double Cheeseburger (and most of the other “no” items in the skit) 24/7 in Katie’s.
  • Tuesday is International Country Music Day (not to be confused with National Country Music Day which is in July.)  Seems we’ve come close to hitting this date on the nose over the last few years with country concerts in TJ’s Corral such as Randy Houser on September 8, 2016; 38 Special (country rock) on September 21, 2018 and Lee Brice on September 18, 2015. This year we’ll have to find another way to celebrate as our outdoor concert season wound down in August.
  • Tuesday is Monte Cristo Sandwich Day. You can watch this 3½ minute video and learn how to make your own Deep Fried Monte Cristo Sandwich – which will take you quite a while to make and even more time to clean up. Or, come on into Katie’s and order one of our Fried Monte Cristo Sandwiches!

Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley
at Last Thursdays's Blood Drive
Community Wins
Battle of the Badges Blood Drive
Our entire community won big as a result of last Thursday’s Battle of the Badges Blood Drive at the CVI!  Here is part of the note we received the next day from our Donor Services Rep at Vitalant: “We wanted to send the biggest THANK YOU! I’m excited to share your results from yesterday’s blood drive! We had such a great turnout of donors that we had to go back to Reno and get more supplies half way into the drive. 108 donors stepped up and gave the gift of life! Those donors gave a total of 126 units of blood! Those vital units will help hospital patients in the northern Nevada and northern California area. That deserves to be celebrated! We cherish your partnership and how you’ve embraced this life- transforming mission. I am excited to announce the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department won the Battle of the Badges with 62 votes.” Our thanks goes out to all who donated or just stopped by to say “hi!” We appreciate your support!

Sentimental Journey at Minden Airport This Week
On The Ramp Now
  • The historic WW-II bomber Sentimental Journey B17 arrived yesterday at the Minden-Tahoe Airport and will be here through Sunday offering Ground Tours and Rides. Click Here for the schedule and pricing and be sure to say “HI” to the pilots and crew who are staying at the CVI.
  • On a sad aviation note, we offer our thoughts this week to the family of Al Haynes who passed away in late August at the age of 87.  Captain Haynes told his incredible story of the United Flight 232 crash in Sioux City, Iowa to overflowing audiences in our then Valley Ballroom twice in the CVI’s early years: in March of 1993 (sponsored by Minden Rotary) and February of 1996 (sponsored by the Aviation Association of Douglas County). Some of us were here for those presentations and they were riveting!
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
  • Tyler Stafford tonight: Named “Reno’s Best Songwriter 2013” Tyler Stafford is a homegrown talent. His songs often draw comparisons to songwriters such as John Mayer and Paul Simon delivered with a candor and immediacy reminiscent of John Lennon.

  • NFL Football Sunday and Monday Nights: We clear the stage of entertainment on Sunday and Monday nights during the fall so the featured night NFL games can be enjoyed on the big screen.
