Return to the Danger Zone, Colors & Comedy, Coming Up at CVI, More

Kenny Loggins Last Year, Blue Angels This Year
Think about it: Minden, Nevada, population 3,001 according to the 2010 census. Kenny Loggins performs to a sold-out crowd in Minden in 2017 . . . the US Navy Blue Angels will be in Minden next week staging and performing at Minden-Tahoe Airport.  Seriously, how does this happen!? Rather than dwell on the why, get in the mood for next week's Aviation Roundup by enjoying the above video which shows the US Navy Blue Angels performing to the music of Kenny Loggins’ Danger Zone . . . which he performed live last year in TJ's Corral!  Many other aerobatic acts, static aircraft displays and vendor booths will be on hand for the Aviation Roundup – more information is on this website, tickets are available either online or at Raley's Gardnerville. We can't wait!

Comedy & Colors
What do Comedy and Fall Colors have to do with each other?  Normally nothing . . . Unless one is describing off-color comedy!  Brian Lee visited with us last week to check out the Valley Ballroom for the Core 4 Comedy Show he is headlining on Saturday night, November 10. Our friend Tim Parsons from Tahoe Onstage also came down to interview Brian for a story he will be posting online fairly soon. On his way down, Tim took some fall color pictures on Highway 88 in the Hope Valley area. Tim shared the above with us which is from this article he posted with even more fall color pictures taken within 20 minutes of the Carson Valley Inn.  As for the subject off-color comedy, we asked Brian about that very subject and we are still trying to totally interpret his response which was, "My parents come to my shows . . . but they also have my sense of humor!" Tickets for the November 10 comedy show are $20 and you can buy them online or at our hotel desk.

Coming Up at the CVI
We're starting to get questions about these three events, so please mark your calendar and we’ll have more information coming in future weeks:
  • A Touch of Class Craft Fair: Thursday – Saturday, October 25 – 27 in the Valley Ballroom. Admission is free for this uniquely structured craft fair. Click here for more information.
  • Veteran’s Day Free Spaghetti Feed: Sunday, November 11 in the Valley Ballroom. We've  been doing this for a number of years and we'll have more information for you very soon.
  • Share your Christmas Food Drive: Friday, December 7 in our west parking lot along Highway 395.  This is the annual 12-hour day devoted to raising food and cash for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet! Thanks to the warm and overwhelming generosity of our community, the Food Closet will soon be opening a bigger, better, more efficient and more user-friendly facility which is currently under construction. Check the story that recently ran on KTVN Channel 2News at this link.

  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM is at $3,053 for this week . . . play a $5 card and it’s yours if you pick all 15 games straight up . . . seems like it wouldn’t be that difficult!
  • Monday Night Football Poker Room Grid:  More of the squares went unclaimed this past Monday so the squares are worth $94 each for this coming Monday’s Redskins/Saints game. You have to be present to win and any unclaimed winnings roll to the following week. Check the details on this page.
  • Our Guys Picks!  The Guys had another “keep your day job” week going 3 & 5.  If you’ve been following the guys weekly Blog Picks for the past two years, one LOCK has seemed to emerged: bet against Greg’s picks!  Moving on to week 5, Greg (3 - 5) takes the Patriots -10 vs. the Colts and the Bills +3½ against the Titans. Mike (5 - 3) is sticking to the college path with Nevada +12 vs. Fresno and, in a true display of “Fear the Turtle," Maryland +17½ vs his alma mater Michigan.  Steve (4 - 4) sees high scoring and has picked over 52½ in the Saints/Redskins game and over 48½ in the Chiefs/Jaguars contest.  Alan (3 - 5) sees the Steelers -3 rebounding against the Falcons and took the over 53½ in the Raiders/Chargers game.
  • Beer & Snacks: Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI. Our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • NHL Hockey is Back Today! This week you can bet NCAA and NFL Football, NHL Hockey, the Major League Baseball Playoffs, Canadian Football League, the Sunday NASCAR Gander Outdoors 400 and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship, the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2019 Stanley Cup and the 2019 NBA Championship.
All About Food & Drink!
Gotta Try the Fish Tacos Plate in Katie's!
  • Thursday is Vodka Day. We don't mind shifting the attention to our walking-distance neighbor Bently Heritage Estate Distillery which is planning on opening to the public before the end of November. While fine whiskeys are their end game (already aging in the barrels), they will have their estate vodka and gin ready to sample and buy when they open. Until then, we have a variety of vodkas available at the CV Steak bar so stop by and enjoy your favorite!
  • Thursday is also Taco Day. Our hands-down favorite is the Fish Taco Plate served in Katie's every day for $7.99: Two tasty soft shell tacos with white fish, tangy slaw, rice and beans (refried or black)!
  • Saturday is Noodle Day. We believe any type of pasta fits the "Noodle Day" celebration so we draw your attention to the Seafood Linguine or the Clams Linguine in CV Steak. The latter comes with our special black ink pasta!
  • Tuesday is Beer and Pizza Day. There are days we'd love to be able to order pizza here at the Carson Valley Inn. However, our sister property Bodine's Casino on the south end of Carson City is hard to beat. They're special brick pizza oven produces a surface of over 600°F which is perfect for cooking every made to order pizza. Enjoy a Bodines pizza and your favorite brew on Beer and Pizza Day or any day.

Some Say We Are the Best, A Bigger Look at Football, More in Carson Valley Inn Blog

Welcome Best of Carson Valley
This Friday we’re pleased to host the awards luncheon for The Record Courier staff and all of the local businesses they are honoring for being named Best of Carson Valley 2018 in their recent online poll.  All of the results will be announced tomorrow in the paper and on their website. However, they did give us an okay to “leak” that the Carson Valley Inn was voted #1 Best Casino and #1 Best Lodging - and that CV Steak  was voted #1 Best Steak and #1 Best Dinner. Be sure to check all of the winners coming out in this Thursday’s issue of The Record Courier!

38 Special Founding Member Don Barnes Waves Good-bye
to the TJ's Corral 2018 Concert Season Last Friday
CVI in the Words of Others
From time-to-time we like to spare you our own words and share what others say about the CVI – often stated better than our own ramblings!
  • A Tahoe/Carson Valley Visit: “We recently spent a few splendid summer days in South Lake Tahoe and the nearby Carson Valley. No more than eight hours by car from Pasadena, it’s a convenient world-class getaway.” These words closed a brief but commanding story by Cuyler Gibbons after his recent visit to South Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley.
  • Great Atmosphere: “Centrally located in the Carson Valley Inn, this steak house is just as good as the best ones in the country. Great steak and options for other meals. Casual as well as business/professional/upper class restaurant without the prices. Very well priced, friendly and professional staff and great food. Definitely worth stopping in for a dinner.” - Eric Y. on Trip Advisor
  • Last Friday’s Concert: “Throughout the night, folks kept shouting ‘that’s my favorite song!’”  And so marked the last day of summer at the 38 Special Concert last Friday night in TJ’s Corral. Pheonix Gruneich of Tahoe Onstage wrapped it up with those words and more in this online story she titled No locks at TJ’s Corral during sold-out 38 Special show – a play on words that ties to how the group originally got its name! Enjoy the article and the pictures as posted by both Pheonix and Purple Door Photography.
Something to Laugh At!
Interesting logo, huh! Four comedians will be weaving their tales together to present this Core 4 Comedy in our Valley Ballroom on Saturday, November 10 and we’ll all learn the meaning of the logo at that time (better be funny, right!). Between Host Jeff Anderson, Special Guest Luke Westberg, Feature Act Andy Picarro and Headliner Brian Lee, one of them has to have an explanation! Be sure to get it on your calendar . . . We know it’s still a few weeks away but these things have a tendency to sneak up on us and we can only hold so many people in  the Valley Ballroom!  Tickets are $20 and you can buy them online or at our hotel desk.

Do They Really Dance There?
The Genoa Candy Dance is this Saturday and Sunday and all the details are at this link. A hearty breakfast in Katie’s is a good start for a day of walking and gawking at the many hundred craft booths and other attractions. And when you’re done browsing and buying, stop in for a cold beer at one of our bars. As a friendly reminder, the Town of Genoa discontinued the shuttle between Minden and the Candy Dance last year. And yes, while crafts and confections fill the two days, there really is a dance Saturday night!

Football is Much Bigger
  • Have you noticed in the last few days that football games appear much bigger on the Cabaret Lounge screens?  It’s not just your imagination. We replaced the 47” screens (16 of ‘em so far) with 65” HD TV screens and we have eight more to go on the “other side” of the Casino Bar. Hard to believe, but that almost doubled the viewing image on each TV from the previous 942 sq. inches for each 47” screen to just over 1,800 sq. inches for each 65” screen. All this just in time to magnify the incredible upsets and questionable penalty calls that permeated the NFL this past Sunday!
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM jumped to $2,955 for this week. With the Lions topping the Vikings and New England falling to Detroit it’s no wonder that no one picked all 15 games correctly which is all it takes to capture the Jackpot . . . and the parlay tickets are only $5!
  • Monday Night Football Poker Room Grid:  Two of the four squares went unclaimed this past Monday so the squares are worth $72 each for this coming Monday’s Chiefs/Broncos game. You have to be present to win and any unclaimed winnings roll to the following week. Check the details on this page.
  • Our Guys Picks!  a better week for our guys with six winners out of eight picks last week.  They look to continue the hot streak with Mike taking the Texas Longhorns -8 ½ at K-State and Troy -14 vs. Coastal Carolina.  Greg is betting on a low scoring Jets – Jags game taking the under 38 ½ and the Falcons -5 ½ against the Bengals.  Alan loves the Chiefs -4 ½ at the Broncos and his Eagles -4 at the Titans.  Steve is going with an all Los Angeles Sunday taking the Rams -7 vs. the Vikings and the Chargers -10 ½ against the quarterback less 49er’s.
  • Beer & Snacks: Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI. Our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • Sports and Race Betting: You can place and collect sports bets any time the Sports Book is open at the Carson Valley Inn or Bodines Casino. At Sharkey’s and Slot World, all sports betting is done at Guest Services. A winning sports bet placed at any of our four casinos can be cashed at any of our four casinos.  Horse Race bets can only be placed or cashed when the Race and Sports Book is open at the CVI or Bodines Casino.
  • What’s On The Board: This week you can bet NCAA and NFL Football, Major League Baseball, Canadian Football League, the Sunday NASCAR Bank of America ROVAL™ 400 and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship and the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Apples, Coffee & Beer - See Below!
Just for Fun

  • Friday is Drink Beer Day. Stop by the CV Steak Bar or the Casino Bar and enjoy one of the various beers we offer by the bottle or on tap!
  • Friday is Ask a Stupid Question Day. The obvious that comes to our mind, "Why would a beer drinker even need a Drink Beer Day?!  More universal, supposedly, is the concern expressed in the page about Ask a Stupid Question Day which poses the question: “What if the hokey pokey really is what it’s all about?”
  • Monday is International Coffee Day. Enjoy your favorite coffee drink in Job's Perk open daily from 6 AM!

These specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato – au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked – tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread.
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Hans Eberbach tonight, Garage Boys Thursday thru Saturday, NFL Football Sunday and Monday nights and Carolyn Dolan next Tuesday and Wednesday. Vocalist and songwriter Hans Eberbach sings for the band Joy & Madness, an evolution of vintage soul sound with modern classic pop sensibilities. He also fronts his own band HANS! and the HOT MESS. The Garage Boys are a high energy, 100% organic, rock band. Their unique sound reflects their influences which range from The Beatles and Stones, to STP, Weezer, Bob Marley, Sublime, Thin Lizzy, Metallica, Radiohead, Bon Jovi and even Steely Dan. They play everything from glam-rock to Reggae to old school classic country rock.  Carolyn Dolan can dive into powerful R & B, deliver a smooth jazz standard or a gentle country ballad. For the last fifteen years, she has been performing with her rockin' blues and R & B band, Carolyn Dolan and Big Red.

Stu Cook Interview, Blue Angels Thread the Needle, Legend of the Carson Valley, More

A Chat with Stu Cook
of Creedence Clearwater Revisited
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford bring a nearly sold-out (standing room tickets remain) Creedence Clearwater Revisited concert to TJ’s Corral on Sunday evening, August 12. Northern Nevada Photo Journalist Nick McCabe interviewed Clifford during an area appearance by "Revisited" in 2017 so he was invited to chat with Stu Cook recently in advance of their upcoming visit. The interview is at this link and covers Stu's thoughts on touring, hobbies (he used to fly his own plane in and out of Minden Airport when he lived in Tahoe), travel, the sacrifices of success and more. You can buy tickets on our website or in person at the Hotel Front Desk. Concert night reservations for the Hotel, Motor Lodge and RV Park can be made on our website or by calling 775-783-6629.

These Guys Can Really Thread the Needle!
  • Today is Thread the Needle Day. And there's nothing like watching the needle get threaded at 500 miles an hour as shown in the Blue Angels picture above! Want to see it all for yourself? Get tickets now for the Aviation Roundup at the Minden-Tahoe airport on October 13 and 14 featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels!!
  • Friday is Talk in an Elevator Day. On the surface, you wouldn't think this has anything to do with the Carson Valley Inn. However, we happen to be one of the few places in Minden and Gardnerville where there is actually an elevator that covers enough floors to create that awkward silence that occurs when strangers get in an elevator. So, next time you ride the elevator at the CVI, mix it up a little and get a conversation going!
  • Friday is also Scotch Whiskey Day. We have the full gamut of choices at the CV Steak Bar from the get-up-on-the-ladder, top shelf Johnny Walker Gold to other more reachable brands. What's the best way to drink Scotch Whiskey? Decide for yourself after reading these suggestions from a Scottish bartender.
  • Saturday is Milk Chocolate Day. Most of our house-made chocolate desserts use the more nutritionally favorable dark chocolate which has more of the original cocoa bean. If you just have a hankering for milk chocolate, order the Chocolate Mousse in CV Steak!
  • Sunday is International Chicken Wing Day. Rather than confuse you with dozens of combinations, we make it simple: our Pound of Buffalo Wings basket with celery and ranch dressing is available for at-your-seat enjoyment at our bars or in the Cabaret Lounge!
  • Monday is Cheesecake Day. We make cheesecake just about every day in our bakery and they have proven quite popular as desserts in Katie's and CV Steak . . . Plus dozens are purchased every week at the Katie's Bakery Counter. Could this unusually high local demand be a throwback to the dairy heritage of Carson Valley??
J. T. Humphrey - One of the Legends of the Carson Valley
A Legend of the Carson Valley
Recreation, history, relaxation, exploration . . . all this and more are available in the Carson Valley just minutes from the Carson Valley Inn. Take a look at JT Humphrey in the picture above. He’s just one of the Legends of the Carson Valley. Not legendary because of being here many years . . . but legendary because he depicts just one aspect of all there is to do, see and experience.  Find out more about the Legends of the Carson Valley by clicking on this link and download or request a Carson Valley Visitors Guide by clicking on this link!

Some Concerts Near Sell Out, Two Gaming Tournaments, Kentucky Derby, More

He Wanted a Party – It’s Friday, May 12 in TJ’s Corral!
Before Stew “The Turtle” Stewart passed away earlier this year he told Joey Whitacre, our Director Of Marketing And Casino Operations, he didn’t want a “service” or “memorial,” he just wanted us to throw a party.  Music was Stew’s life-long passion and his biggest sense of pride was TJ’s Corral where he brought in great national acts including one of country music’s biggest stars, Merle Haggard.  So, the party is Friday evening May 12th in TJ’s Corral and we are affectionately calling it “Turtle’s Last Dance.”  The fun starts at 5pm, the Davisson Brothers – they had a special place in Stew’s heart – perform live at 6pm and the evening is free to all ages.

Concert Chatter
  • Thank you for your overwhelming support of our season opening concert!  We had a Sold Out
Aaron Watson June 16 in TJ's Corral
audience – and the best weather we could possibly have expected for late April – for the Wynonna and the Big Noise Tour concert last Saturday. Our thanks to Tahoe Onstage’s Pheonix Gruneich who posted this review.
  • Moving along, just a reminder that this weekly blog is supposed to be fun and light-hearted and we never intend to make serious predictions, give warnings or lecture. However, we did get a couple of “remarks” from people who missed out on Wynonna concert tickets because they waited too long. So, please don’t do the same if you have any intention of attending the Lee Brice Concert on May 20 or the Kenny Loggins Concert on Friday, June 9.  If we were into speculating, we would give you the “nod” that both of these concerts will be sold out in advance.
  • Also on sale now are tickets for the Aaron Watson featuring special guest Clare Dunn Concert on Friday, June 16.
  • For your convenience, here is a link to our Remaining 2017 Concert Lineup.
Sports and Race Book:
  • The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday and the draw for post positions is this morning at 8 a.m.
    - fans can watch a live stream through the Kentucky Derby's official
Facebook and Twitter pages.  We’ll start taking bets on Friday and you can place pari mutuel wagers during Sports and Racebook hours until post time Saturday. Of course we’ll be showing the festivities and race (3:46 PM PDT) in the Cabaret Lounge with $2 draft beer specials.
  • Also on the Board:  NBA Playoffs, NHL Playoffs, MLB, all other Horse Racing and Sunday’s NASCAR GEICO 500 at Talladega SuperspeedwayFutures include winners for the World Series and 2018 Super Bowl.  Here’s one that will probably come as no surprise to any football fan: according to the odds makers, the Patriots are currently most likely to win the Super Bowl and the Browns are the least likely.

Turns Out It’s More Than PR Fluff! We’ve often touted the Carson Valley Inn as “centrally located” for exploring, recreation, or whatever other activity meets the “promotional” needs of the subject at hand. Well this time we are making another such claim that is de-facto supported, ratified and sanctioned by a media giant! Our claim: the Carson Valley Inn is centrally located for visiting and experiencing two of the Southwest’s 10 Best Small Towns, Genoa and Virginia City! Who says? Turns out the folks who jumped in on the Readers’ Choice Poll conducted by USA Today. . . See the results here.

Some Stuff We Think is Important:
  • Mother’s Day is less than two weeks away and if you haven’t made dinner plans yet, we suggest you do so soon! We’re offering Mother’s Day Specials and our regular menu items in both Katie’s and CV Steak (CV Steak reservations strongly suggested at 775-783-6650).
  • Thursday is International Firefighter’s Day and we offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to all of the professional and volunteer firefighter/paramedics who make up the East Fork Fire District. We have witnessed your dedication, training, responsiveness and professionalism so many times over the years . . . the Carson Valley is so fortunate to have such a high level of protection in our area!
  • If you are at the Carson Valley Inn this weekend you’ll notice a few most-unusual sites and quite a high level of activity at TJ’s Corral both Friday and Saturday nights (is that really a great big tent?!)  We are pleased and honored to be hosting a major corporate event bringing 300 people from around the country to the Carson Valley for an employee appreciation weekend.
  • Band Tastic 2.0 is coming to TJ’s Corral on Saturday, May 13 . . . with over 200 student musicians from various Douglas County schools participating. Get it on your calendar (noon start) and we’ll have more details next week.
  • Today is National Two Different Colored Shoes Day. Do we really think this is important? Of course not. Do we think it is somewhat amusing and strongly indicative of people who have too much time on their hands and sit around thinking these “days” up? You bet we do! Are some of us around here wearing two different colored shoes today? Guess you’ll have to stop by see for yourself!
