Comedy Coming!
Just a little over two weeks until our Core 4 Comedy show on Saturday, November 10 in our Valley Ballroom. Join Headliner Brian Lee, Host Jeff Anderson, Special Guest Luke Westberg and Feature Act Andy Picarro for 4X Laughs . . . . Tickets are just $20 either online or at our hotel desk!

Which Witch is Which?
Which Witch? Which Wednesday?
This is a tale of two witches and two Wednesdays. Let’s start with the two witches pictured above. The one on the left is Julie and the one on the right is Kim. They’ve been witching it up the last few Ladies’ Nights in preparation for tonight’s Witch Hat Contest with a cauldron filled with five prizes!  So wear your witch’s hat to Ladies’ Night today starting at 5:30 PM and our judges will decide which witches win at 8 PM. First place is $100.00 Cash, second is $50.00 in FreePlay, and the third through fifth place prizes are special gift baskets. As for next Wednesday, our witches will be out riding their brooms so we’ll be taking a week off from Ladies’ Night so all can enjoy Halloween!

Spectacular Fall View at #7 Tee Box - Genoa Lakes
Golf in the Carson Valley – Plan Now for 2019
Almost 100 folks enjoyed two days of spectacular fall golf earlier this week during our annual “Golf Chairpersons’ Appreciation Event.”   You could be part of this complimentary event next year, here’s how: Dozens of golf groups visit the Carson Valley Inn each season to enjoy our area’s courses and various group food and beverage receptions and dinners. Each fall, we invite the gracious people who “chair” each event to join us in celebrating the year with a stress-free visit “on us!”  So, if you have a group of golfers – with as few as 8 to as many as 100+ – we’d like to share how we can package a golf visit for your group in 2019. We arrange the golf reservations, rooms and social functions . . . you gather the troops. To find out more, contact Greg Enholm in our Sales Department at 775-783-6615. He’ll walk you through the process, set up your group for a fun visit, and then make sure you are invited to our 2019 Appreciation Event next fall!

Christmas Gifts and Other Holiday Crafts
Abundance of Clever Crafts This Weekend
Almost 4,000 sq. ft. of handmade crafts and other gifts will be available in our Valley Ballroom this Thursday, Friday and Saturday when the A Touch of Class craft show returns for its 5th year at the Carson Valley Inn and 18th year overall. The holidays shopping weekend features 28-30 crafters . . . but no booths! This setup makes your shopping experience more like a boutique with central cashiers eliminating the need to make separate purchases from individual crafters. Come in and check it out from 10 AM to 8 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday!

Football and Other Sports at the Inn
  • Our Guys Picks!  A bit of a stumble last week, as the “team” only managed to pick one game correctly.  1-7 is probably their worst week ever.  So, will they stay in a slump or will the law of averages kick in?  Mike went with the meekest mascots last week: cute little golden gophers and a happy duck.  Both lost. This week, he’s going with the Killer Whales and the Godzillas. The next best thing is the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes -2½ hosting the Tulane Green Wave.  That is one (kind of an ugly green) wave against multiple Hurricanes.  Mike also likes the Washington State Cougars +3 on the road against the Stanford Cardinal.  It’s a color for goodness sake.  The cougars will run right past the dancing tree. Steve picked against his Saints again: The Vikings -1 at home.  He also likes the Steelers -8 at home against the Cleveland Browns.  They’ll have to avoid overtime in the rematch to cover the 8 points! Greg thinks both Bay area teams have turned the corner: he likes the 49’ers at the Phoenix Cardinals (pick-em), and the Raiders +3 hosting the Indianapolis Colts.  Alan decided to give serious consideration to his picks this week.  He was still calculating as we went to press.  He finally blurted out the Eagles -3 in London against the tanking Jacksonville Jaguars.  And he went with Florida +7 against the Georgia Bulldogs in the "world's largest outdoor cocktail party."  Given more time, he would have made 2 absolutely certain selections.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM failed to hit last week and inched up to $3,429 for this week . . . play a $5 card and it’s paid out to any to whoever picks all 15 games (any ties split).
  • Monday Night Football Poker Room Grid:  We had $112 carryover from this past Monday so the squares are worth $88 each for this coming Monday’s Bills/Patriots game. “The Grid” pays the first three quarters and the final score . . . you must be present to win and any unclaimed winnings roll to the following week. Check the details on this page.
  • Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI.
  • On The Board! This week you can bet NCAA and NFL Football, NHL Hockey, NBA Basketball, the World Series, Canadian Football League, the Sunday NASCAR First Data 500 (down to 8 drivers for the Monster Energy Cup) and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship, the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2019 Stanley Cup and the 2019 NBA Championship.
Just Gotta Mention These "Days"
  • Today is World Pasta Day, not to be confused with National Pasta Day which was last Wednesday. Since pasta is obviously the “message,” we will tempt you with the three most popular pasta dishes in CV Steak: The Seafood Linguini with shrimp, scallops and diced lobster; the Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo and the Mushroom Ravioli (served as an appetizer or entrée).
  • Friday is Pumpkin Day. Not that an excuse is needed, but if you want to show your support, you could always order a slice of pumpkin pie in Katie’s or take home a whole pumpkin pie from the Katie’s Bakery Counter!
  • Saturday is Cranky Coworker Day. Not a problem since the “crank” probably is off Saturdays!
  • Tuesday is Haunted Refrigerator Night,  supposedly “best celebrated by cleaning out the horrors that live deep within your icebox.” So, if someone invites you to celebrate this “holiday” with dinner at their house, immediately counter with an offer to buy them dinner in Katie’s or CV Steak!
This Week in the Casino
  • Ladies’ Night Tonight: Join us from 5:30 to 8:30 PM with a Free Chocolate Shoppe Gift and Manicure Set for the first 150 ladies and Chocolate Shoppe Presents as hot seat prizes.  Also tonight: the Witch Hat Contest mentioned above, games, raffles, a weekly drink special and free bingo for ladies playing in the pit or at slots.
  • Point Multipliers Friday: 4X Points on Reel Slots and Video Poker Slots all day every Friday in October. Watch those points add up fast and use them for dining, FreePlay, Katie’s Bakery products and more!
  • Giveaways Friday:  Join us at 5, 7 and 9 PM for our giveaway drawings for cash and FreePlay.
  • $55,000 Giveaways Promotion Grand Prize Drawings Saturday:  Join us at 6 and 8 PM at the CVI for Thirty (30) - $500 Winners (cash & FreePlay) Guaranteed between CVI and Sharkey’s (Sharkey’s drawings at 5 and 7 PM.)
  • Your Rewards Monday: INN Club members can swipe at the casino kiosk once on Monday for Your Reward. Could be FreePlay, a Free Food offer, a Free Multiplier or a Free Gift!
In Our Restaurants
  • Wednesday is Italian Day in Katie’s – three specials for $6.99 each served from 11 AM to 10 PM! Our Friday and Saturday night special in Katie’s is Roasted Prime Rib & Fried Shrimp for $14.99 served from 4 PM.
  • Thursday’s special in CV Steak is the CV Steak Mix Grill, a combination of our Filet Mignon, a Dijon and molasses Marinated Pork Tenderloin Medallion and Herb Marinated Lamb Chop for $26. This Friday it’s Syrah Braised Bison Osso Bucco slow-cooked with vegetables, wine, herbs and natural pan sauce; served with a potato cauliflower puree for $35.00. Saturday night’s special is Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sunday's special is King Crab Legs for $28. These specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato – au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked – tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Adam Donald tonight, Voodoo Cowboys Thursday - Saturday, NFL Football Sunday and Monday nights and Cliff & Dave next Tuesday and Wednesday. Adam Donald brings an upbeat and entertaining solo show with a heavy arsenal of songs mixing today’s hits with some old country favorites. Playing together since 2009, the Voodoo Cowboys are the life of the party with their dance-inducing, hard drivin' style whether playing country music (and not the cryin' in your beer stuff) or an impressive selection of classic rock ‘n’ roll. Cliff & Dave is powerhouse singer/gospel drummer Cliff Porter and southern-fried singer/guitarist Dave Berry, often seen fronting the band Jelly Bread. The Duo provides an evening of  sultry R&B, funk and swinging rock ’n’ roll.

Return to the Danger Zone, Colors & Comedy, Coming Up at CVI, More

Kenny Loggins Last Year, Blue Angels This Year
Think about it: Minden, Nevada, population 3,001 according to the 2010 census. Kenny Loggins performs to a sold-out crowd in Minden in 2017 . . . the US Navy Blue Angels will be in Minden next week staging and performing at Minden-Tahoe Airport.  Seriously, how does this happen!? Rather than dwell on the why, get in the mood for next week's Aviation Roundup by enjoying the above video which shows the US Navy Blue Angels performing to the music of Kenny Loggins’ Danger Zone . . . which he performed live last year in TJ's Corral!  Many other aerobatic acts, static aircraft displays and vendor booths will be on hand for the Aviation Roundup – more information is on this website, tickets are available either online or at Raley's Gardnerville. We can't wait!

Comedy & Colors
What do Comedy and Fall Colors have to do with each other?  Normally nothing . . . Unless one is describing off-color comedy!  Brian Lee visited with us last week to check out the Valley Ballroom for the Core 4 Comedy Show he is headlining on Saturday night, November 10. Our friend Tim Parsons from Tahoe Onstage also came down to interview Brian for a story he will be posting online fairly soon. On his way down, Tim took some fall color pictures on Highway 88 in the Hope Valley area. Tim shared the above with us which is from this article he posted with even more fall color pictures taken within 20 minutes of the Carson Valley Inn.  As for the subject off-color comedy, we asked Brian about that very subject and we are still trying to totally interpret his response which was, "My parents come to my shows . . . but they also have my sense of humor!" Tickets for the November 10 comedy show are $20 and you can buy them online or at our hotel desk.

Coming Up at the CVI
We're starting to get questions about these three events, so please mark your calendar and we’ll have more information coming in future weeks:
  • A Touch of Class Craft Fair: Thursday – Saturday, October 25 – 27 in the Valley Ballroom. Admission is free for this uniquely structured craft fair. Click here for more information.
  • Veteran’s Day Free Spaghetti Feed: Sunday, November 11 in the Valley Ballroom. We've  been doing this for a number of years and we'll have more information for you very soon.
  • Share your Christmas Food Drive: Friday, December 7 in our west parking lot along Highway 395.  This is the annual 12-hour day devoted to raising food and cash for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet! Thanks to the warm and overwhelming generosity of our community, the Food Closet will soon be opening a bigger, better, more efficient and more user-friendly facility which is currently under construction. Check the story that recently ran on KTVN Channel 2News at this link.

  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM is at $3,053 for this week . . . play a $5 card and it’s yours if you pick all 15 games straight up . . . seems like it wouldn’t be that difficult!
  • Monday Night Football Poker Room Grid:  More of the squares went unclaimed this past Monday so the squares are worth $94 each for this coming Monday’s Redskins/Saints game. You have to be present to win and any unclaimed winnings roll to the following week. Check the details on this page.
  • Our Guys Picks!  The Guys had another “keep your day job” week going 3 & 5.  If you’ve been following the guys weekly Blog Picks for the past two years, one LOCK has seemed to emerged: bet against Greg’s picks!  Moving on to week 5, Greg (3 - 5) takes the Patriots -10 vs. the Colts and the Bills +3½ against the Titans. Mike (5 - 3) is sticking to the college path with Nevada +12 vs. Fresno and, in a true display of “Fear the Turtle," Maryland +17½ vs his alma mater Michigan.  Steve (4 - 4) sees high scoring and has picked over 52½ in the Saints/Redskins game and over 48½ in the Chiefs/Jaguars contest.  Alan (3 - 5) sees the Steelers -3 rebounding against the Falcons and took the over 53½ in the Raiders/Chargers game.
  • Beer & Snacks: Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI. Our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • NHL Hockey is Back Today! This week you can bet NCAA and NFL Football, NHL Hockey, the Major League Baseball Playoffs, Canadian Football League, the Sunday NASCAR Gander Outdoors 400 and Horseracing.
All About Food & Drink!
Gotta Try the Fish Tacos Plate in Katie's!
  • Thursday is Vodka Day. We don't mind shifting the attention to our walking-distance neighbor Bently Heritage Estate Distillery which is planning on opening to the public before the end of November. While fine whiskeys are their end game (already aging in the barrels), they will have their estate vodka and gin ready to sample and buy when they open. Until then, we have a variety of vodkas available at the CV Steak bar so stop by and enjoy your favorite!
  • Thursday is also Taco Day. Our hands-down favorite is the Fish Taco Plate served in Katie's every day for $7.99: Two tasty soft shell tacos with white fish, tangy slaw, rice and beans (refried or black)!
  • Saturday is Noodle Day. We believe any type of pasta fits the "Noodle Day" celebration so we draw your attention to the Seafood Linguine or the Clams Linguine in CV Steak. The latter comes with our special black ink pasta!
  • Tuesday is Beer and Pizza Day. There are days we'd love to be able to order pizza here at the Carson Valley Inn. However, our sister property Bodine's Casino on the south end of Carson City is hard to beat. They're special brick pizza oven produces a surface of over 600°F which is perfect for cooking every made to order pizza. Enjoy a Bodines pizza and your favorite brew on Beer and Pizza Day or any day.

The Volcano, The French Disaster, A Craft Show and More

The Volcano Barely Edges The Hangover! Sounds like the headlines the day after a bout between two boxers with quirky names!  If you read our blog last week, you'll know these are both specialty hamburgers we serve in the Jackpot Café at Sharkey's Casino. And the truth is, The Volcano barely did edge The Hangover for first place in the Burger Wars poll by carsonvalleytimes.com so The Volcano joins the top three finishers in the 2014 Burger Wars poll for the 2015 Finals voting which starts this coming Monday at carsonvalleytimes.com.
I may not look hot, but read about me . . . I am!
The Volcano is definitely a unique burger. We start with ground beef and ground chorizo and combine them together in a mixture percentage known only to Chef Bruce at Sharkey's. A beginning amount of ghost pepper cheese (pretty darn hot stuff!) is folded into this meat mixture. The burger is then cooked and additional ghost pepper cheese is melted on top. We add a secret spicy sauce and sprinkle on some volcano dust, a seasoning blend of some pretty spicy peppers (again known only to Chef Bruce). We serve it up with a stack of french fries or, for a small extra charge you can get sweet potato waffle fries which tend to ease the “heat” of the burger.
If you think The Volcano is close to the edge of the charts, be sure to check one of the other finalists, the “not for lightweights” CV Steak Gourmet Burger available in two versions: The French Disaster and The American Disaster.  We start with two half-pound Char Broiled Burger Patties made from choice Filet Mignon, New York and Rib Eye Steak ground in house. Toppings and additions include Jack and Cheddar Cheese, Smoked Tomato, Pickled Cucumber Slices, an Onion Ring and Truffle Oil Mayonnaise. The French Disaster is topped with Duck liver "Foie Gras" and a Quail Egg . . . The American Disaster is topped with Applewood-Smoked Bacon. This monstrosity is served with Fresh Potatoes, French Fried and lathered with butter and garlic Parsley. Most people can't finish this gigantuous $19 feast but they often come back to try again!

The 15th Annual Touch of Class Craft Show is this Thursday through Saturday in our Valley Ballroom from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. each day. A Touch of Class is a unique craft show as all of the twodozen plus crafters sell items handmade here in Nevada, there are no booths, and there are central cashiers eliminating the need to purchase items from individual crafters. For more information, contact Sue at 775-265-1097. Or, better yet, catch this 3-minute clip with Melissa Carlson that aired on MyNews4 and Fox 11 News earlier this week. Great coverage of everything you can expect!

Good Game Last Week Coach! The Nevada Wolf Pack looked good in their win over New Mexico last Saturday and Coach Brian Polian shared the highlights with those attending the weekly Blitz Lunch last Monday – but it was in Reno (boo). The Pack is at Wyoming this Saturday and they then host Hawaii on Saturday, October 24th. Win or lose that week, Coach Polian will be here at the Carson Valley Inn for his Blitz Lunch in our Valley Ballroom on Monday, October 26 and let’s hope the film and player highlights he shares are of a big win over the Rainbow Warriors! All Wolfpack fans are invited to attend . . . and we make it easy on you as no reservations are necessary, just show up for the start of the gathering at 11:30 a.m. and pay at the door (under $20).

Fun Bunko - Serious Cause: Time to get serious about participating in the annual Bunko for Breast Cancer event in the CVI Valley Ballroom on Saturday night, October 24. There are lots of ways you can get involved including assembling and sponsoring a team, sponsoring a table, giving a cash donation, donating prizes for the raffle or auction, or just throwing your hat into the ring to help in whatever way is needed. The Bunko for Breast Cancer Webpage has links to just about anything that might trigger your involvement. So how many are on a bunco team? What kind of prizes are they looking for? What’s the dress theme?  Heck, we don't know all the answers . . . we're still befuddled by why this group spells it "Bunko" when everything we've found says "Bunco!" For the answers to these and other questions, call Sheila at 775-215-1626.

Race and Sports Book:
  • This week you can watch and bet Horseracing, the Major League Baseball playoffs (3 series finale showdowns between today and tomorrow), NFL and College Football, and Sunday’s NASCAR Hollywood Casino 400 at the Kansas Speedway.
  • The PRO PK’EM jackpot is $3,358 on this week’s progressive parlay card.
  • Football games our sports book crew is watching with interest this weekend include the Michigan (#7) vs. Michigan State (#12) game on Saturday, all the Sunday NFL games involving the remaining unbeaten teams and the Giants vs. Eagles game on Monday night. They also gave us a “sure bet” – the Atlanta Falcons will remain undefeated after this weekend! Of course we all know about the uncertainty of a "sure bet!"

Main Street Minden Fall Fling This Saturday: The Main Street Minden Fall Fling this Saturday, October 17 is from 3 to 9 pm on Esmeralda Street, a short walk from the CVI. Food available for purchase includes soups, stuffed mushrooms, chips and salsa, fabulous BBQ appetizers and more. There will also be hot cocoa, 12 beers on tap and other beverages for sale. Kids activities include balloon animals, Photobooth by Legendary Entertainment, pumpkin decorating and story teller Captain Michael. While the adults enjoy more food and beverage along Esmeralda Street, the kids can watch the movie Frankenweenie in the CVIC Hall with FREE adult supervision, and popcorn from Ironwood Cinemas. Find out more on the Main Street Minden Webpage or call Sheila at (775) 309-1101.

Cabaret Lounge Entertainment – No Cover, No Minimum – Free! Josh Budro performs tonight, the The Voodoo Cowboys make their CVI Cabaret Lounge debut Thursday thru Saturday nights, NFL Football is on Sunday and Monday Nights and George Pickard appears next Tuesday and Wednesday.   Playing together since 2009, the Voodoo Cowboys have appeared at most major casino venues in Nevada. Not the “cryin' in your beer” type country band, they are the life of the party with their dance-inducing, hard drivin' country music and rock ‘n’ roll. The group has rocked crowds on numerous stages around the world, as well as sharing stages with such rock and country stars as David Nail, Little Texas, Ron Keel, Toby Keith and many more. George Pickard is an early-week regular at the CVI. He co-wrote What Did You Do with Your Old Forty Fives for Bobby Vinton and was also one of the Kingsmen (Louie, Louie) for a while.

As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Even Useful Tidbits and News
  • Wednesday Ladies' Night 5:30 to 8:30 PM: The first 150 ladies to sign up tonight receive a blue or silver water bottle  and coupon for tonight's ladies-only drink special.  There are also ladies-only raffles and hot seat drawings for Wine Country Gift Gift Baskets. Saturday night its Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sunday's special is one pound of King Crab Legs for $32. All these specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato (au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked), tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread.
  • Because we feel like mentioning it:
    • Today is National Dessert Day. Best we can interpret the meaning, everyone is supposed to disregard calorie, fat, or sugar content and just gobble it all down. We're neither suggesting that you do this nor suggesting that you don't. However, if it sounds good, the desserts in Katie's and CV Steak are here to help you.
    • Friday is Bosses Day. The theory is that it doesn't hurt to be nice to your boss at least one day a year! And if you decide to write your boss and note, please make sure that your spelling and grammar are correct as Friday is also Dictionary Day.
    • Saturday is Wear Something Gaudy Day. For some of us, that just means that what we wear every day is somewhat acceptable and tolerated one day a year.
    • Monday is Evaluate Your Life Day. Probably falls at a good time especially if you overate on the National Dessert Day, took the wrong approach on Bosses Day, and really went overboard on Wear Something Gaudy Day!
    • Next Wednesday is National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day and rumor has it we will have fresh made (in our bakery) pumpkin cheesecake for sale in Katie's and at the Katie's bakery counter.
