Million Dollar Winner, Candy Dance, Pizza, Lobster and More

You Read It Correctly:
Bodines Casino Had a Really Big Winner Just a Few Days Ago!
Progressive Jackpots Hitting Left and Right!
Just two weeks ago we put an article in our blog about all the Progressive Jackpots at the CVI. Well, we must have tickled something somewhere because the Lightning Link major progressive has now hit three times in eight days! At the CVI, it hit for $14,601 on Tuesday, September 12 and again for $10,539 last Saturday.  And at sister property Sharkey’s Casino the Lightning Link Progressive hit yesterday for $12,402 (note: the Lightning Link progressive at each property is separate). Not to be outdone, our other sister property “lit it up” on a massive scale when the Wheel Of Fortune® Progressive Jackpot hit for $1,052,574.99 (see picture above) last Saturday at Bodines Casino in Carson City!  Obviously these progressives do hit so we draw your attention to the Penny Progressive Jackpot which topped $46,000 yesterday. This one climbs – and can be won – at all three properties: CVI, Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. We’re on a hand-out-the-cash roll; will you be the next recipient?

Speaking of winners, and we haven’t touched this subject in quite a while, Mike had two winners last Friday at Los Alamitos: Hot Blooded Girl and Zap Again. Why no horse news in so long? As we’ve stated before, owning and running race horses is not for the faint of heart.

Sports Theme to the Last Wine Walk this Thursday
The last Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk is this Thursday from 4:30 – 7:30 PM in downtown Gardnerville and you can’t do the wine walk without passing by or through Sharkey’s Casino! This month’s theme is Athletic/Sports so wear a jersey, uniform, hat or other garb from just about any team for which you have something hanging in your closet!  All the details are at this link and be sure to put a stop at Sharkey’s in your Thursday Wine Walk Game Plan!

The Carson Valley’s second biggest tourist crowd of the year is expected this weekend when the annual Candy Dance Art & Crafts Faire takes over the Town of Genoa this Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM.  A friendly reminder that the road in downtown Genoa will be closed from 7 AM to 5 PM both days so plan accordingly to “go the north route” if you’re traveling from the Carson Valley Inn to one of the Genoa Lakes golf courses. Another friendly reminder: if you’ve taken the shuttle service between the Carson Valley Inn and the Candy Dance in the past remember that, as they posted last year, the Town of Genoa will no longer be operating this service. However, parking areas and driving routes are well-defined and can be found at this link.

Hungry?
Today is National Pepperoni Pizza Day. We  are taking it upon ourselves to declare this a three-day celebration, today through Friday! If you have ample time and an idle mind, a search of the Internet will turn up any number of sources claiming that pepperoni is the most popular topping on pizza. And we can think of no better place to enjoy a freshly-tossed, assembled-to-order and hot-from-the-custom-oven pizza than at Bodine’s Casino.  Actor/Comedian Kevin James supposedly said, “There’s no better feeling in the world than a warm pizza box on your lap."  We say, “Enjoy it fresh out of the oven at Bodines. Any leftovers, we’ll give you a box, take it home, have it for breakfast the next day!”

Monday is National Lobster Day and we’ll cut right to the chase on this one and recommend the Surf and Turf Dinner Special in CV Steak: a 6-ounce filet mignon paired with an 8-ounce lobster tail! This hearty special starts with a tableside tossed salad and also includes vegetable plus your choice of a twice-baked, au gratin or baked potato. Funny thing if you dig into the history of lobster and how it became such a delicacy: a railway started serving the meat as an exotic item to its unknowing passengers!

Football and Other Sports info
  • Our Guys Picks:  Collectively the guys had a pathetic week with Mike picking the only winner of six games.  Mike’s 5 & 1 start proves it pays to work in the Sportsbook.  This week he looks to pad the wallet with the OVER 52 in the Iowa – Penn St. game and Michigan St. +4½ at Notre Dame.  Alan’s 4 & 2 record looks to improve with the Eagles – 6 against the Giants and Mississippi St. +5 at the Georgia Bulldogs.  With an abysmal 1 & 5 record Greg proves to know nothing about sports wagering (Sales Department – figures) and will try to dig out of the hole with Duke – 2 ½ vs. UNC and the Raiders – 3 ½ at the Redskins.
  • Enjoy $2 Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI - and our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM is at $2,777 (lucky number for you?) this week. Play as many cards as you wish – just $5 each!
  • NFL hats, tee shirts, Budweiser merchandise and other prizes are given away in drawings during Monday Night Football at the CVI. Also, three tickets are distributed each week for the Ultimate Tailgate Party package which will be given away during the Monday Night Football game on December 18.
  • $160 Monday Night Football Grid in our poker room every week – earn entries during life poker games.
  • Place Your Bet: We are taking action on Major League Baseball, Horse Racing, NFL and College Football and the NASCAR ISM Connect 300 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway this Sunday. Futures on the board include winners for the World Series, 2018 Super Bowl and 2018 NCAA Football Championship.
  • Sports tickets can be cashed-in at Guest Services when the Sports Book is closed. Horse Race tickets can be cashed only when the Race and Sports Book is open. Winning sports bets placed at any of our three casinos (CVI, Bodines and Sharkey’s) can be cashed at any of the three locations.
  • The Douglas High School Athletics Memorial Dinner will be held in TJ’s Corral on Saturday, September 30 from 4:30 PM to 7 PM. The event is sponsored by Block D, the DHS Athletic Department and the DHS All Sports Boosters and you can help raise money for DHS sports programs by purchasing the $25 tickets from members of any of these teams: Football, Cross Country, Tennis, Volleyball, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer and Girls Golf.

Marshall Tucker Band Pulls in VERY Soon, More in CVI Blog

Remember When We Announced the First Few TJ’s Corral 2017 Concerts?
To us it seems like it wasn’t that long ago and now we only have four events remaining this year (actually five if you’re a sponsor for the Aviation Roundup in October.)

  • Next Up is the Marshall Tucker Band Concert on Friday, July 28 and that’s only about a week away. Thanks to some added capacity we mentioned last week, we still have tickets available . . . But not very many so we suggest you get them prior to the concert to ensure you get in on this one.
  • Brews, Blues & BBQ are in the TJ’s Corral spotlight on Saturday, August 5 for our 33rd Birthday Celebration.  Don’t be looking for ticket information on this one: the Blues entertainment by Maxx Cabello, Jr., Alastair Greene and the Buddy Emmer Blues Band is free! The fun starts at 5:30 PM with $2 Beer, $3 Wine, $1 Water and Soda plus $1 Hot Dogs and $2 Pulled Pork Sandwiches with slaw. The Blues start at 6 PM.
  • Remember Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers? So do we – and we can’t wait to re-live some of their hits at the Michael McDonald Concert on Friday, August 18. Michael followed his stints with these two iconic bands with a solo career equally as impressive. And for those of you who pondered our questions in last Wednesday’s blog: McDonald appeared at Morman Station in Genoa as part of the Sierra Starlight concert series in 2002.
  • Could TJ’s Corral’s Have a Grandfather? We admit that this one is a stretch, but follow along: while Ronnie Milsap hit his big breakthrough in the mid-1970s, he became a popular weekly attraction at the Memphis nightclub T.J.'s in the late 1960s after moving to Memphis, Tennessee. Seems somewhat ironic to us and perhaps he’ll talk about the “tie” while performing many of his #1 Hits at the Ronnie Milsap Concert on Saturday, August 26.
  • Back to the Hint at an October Event:  It’s true, there will be a special Sponsors and Performers Party for the Aviation Roundup in TJ’s Corral on Friday evening, October 8. Want to attend and get a chance to meet and mingle with members of the various acts including the US Air Force Thunderbirds, U.S. Army Golden Knights, The US Navy Tac Demo Team and others? Then become an Aviation Roundup sponsor! For more information call Bobbi at 775-782-9871.  And whatever you do, don’t miss the airshow itself . . . Click here for information on the various ticket programs and Flightline Lounge Packages.

Celebrating Food and Drink at the CVI:
  • Today is National Hot Dog DayGrab one in Job’s Perk – with or without chili, cheese or onions!
  • Saturday is National Crème Brûlée Day: and boy do we serve a spectacular crème brûlée in CV Steak. Our bakers whip up a combination of milk, sugar and egg yolks and cook it “low and slow” in a Bain Marie (think hot water bath) until it’s smooth and creamy. Your server in CV Steak adds a caramelized sugar topping just before you are served providing a special crunch.
  • Sunday is National Vanilla Ice Cream Day: we covered the ice cream topic head-on in our blog last week when we detailed how the Hoch Family Creamery makes our ice cream fresh each week.
  • Monday is National Tequila Day: We checked with Erin at our Cabaret Bar and, other than straight up, she recommends enjoying tequila in a Cadillac Margarita which she makes for us in the video above.
Patriotic Wine Walkers Will Be
Near and In Sharkey's Casino Thursday
Wine Walk Wobbles on Nomenclature:  While “Patriotic” is the theme for tomorrow’s Gardnerville Wine Walk that goes right by (and often through) Sharkey’s Casino, we don’t think what’s happening to this event’s name is very patriotic. Seems the name has to change next year because someone, somewhere, lays claim to the moniker they’ve used for almost 10 years. So, the folks at Main Street Gardnerville are looking for your opinion on what might make a good name for this ongoing oenophile onslaught (hey, there’s an idea!) that happens the third Thursday of the month May through September. Voice your opinion through this survey. And let’s not forget the most important part: whatever you call it, don’t miss tomorrow’s Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk (ha, we said it anyway!)

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Denver Saunders tonight and Thursday, The John Dawson Band Friday and Saturday and Jamie Rollins Sunday thru Tuesday.  Denver Saunders will have you dancing, laughing and singing along to a variety of tunes! The John Dawson Band entertains with a variety of modern country and classic rock. An upbeat and experienced entertainer, Jamie Rollins performs a variety of music from country to rock, to classic oldies and R&B – plus a few his own songs.

The Spinners Didn’t Disappoint!
Between their instant connection with the audience and their nonstop ability to entertain, The Spinners certainly didn’t disappoint the energetic crowd in TJ’s Corral last Saturday night. Once again, the story was captured accurately by our friends at Tahoe Onstage - click here for the first-hand review by Conrad Buedel.

What’s It Like Attending a Concert at TJ’s Corral?
Sometimes we fumble around trying to find new words to describe a promotion, food special or a venue . . . like TJ’s Corral. Turns out that when it comes to TJ’s, our customers are more than willing to weigh in with their thoughts in a manner that’s often better than anything we could write. Here are three reviews posted on the TJ’s Corral Facebook Page after The Spinners concert last Saturday. If you haven’t been to a concert in TJ’s, this will definitely give you a feel:
  •  “Always a great environment, friendly staff, and cold drinks, all around just a great place to let loose and have fun.”  - Ashley F.
  • “Outstanding venue, love it!! Very small and intimate place!” - Ernie M.
  • “We've been to a few concerts and have really enjoyed the small venue. Absolutely beautiful view of the mountains while listening to some great music!!” - Nikki S.
Our Remaining 2017 Concerts in TJ’s:
Do You Remember Last Time
He was in Carson Valley?
  • Marshall Tucker Band Concert on Friday, July 28. This one is just two weeks away and there are some seats available and now some General Admission tickets for standing or sitting on the grass. Stop by our hotel desk or jump on our website to buy tickets online.
  • Michael McDonald Concert on Friday, August 18.  Michael McDonald has appeared in the Carson Valley before - within 7 miles of the Carson Valley Inn. Do you remember where? When? What those concerts were called? Were you there? Let us know in the comments section below.
  • Ronnie Milsap Concert on Saturday, August 26. Ronnie had three dozen #1 hits on the Country Chart between 1974 and 1989 . . . if you were a country fan “back then” we’d like to know your favorite – use the comments section below. As a reminder, this concert is a benefit for The Children’s Cabinet
Celebrating Food at the CVI:
The Chocolate Part of Building
a Grand Marnier Cheesecake
  • Thursday is National French Fry Day. Putting aside all the technicalities of what actually constitutes a legitimate french fry, we have two special options: at the Jackpot Café in Sharkey’s Casino we offer special Sweet Potato Fries in addition to “regular” french fries. Up at the restaurant in Bodine’s Casino, Beer Battered Fries are the specialty. Options . . . Who can complain!
  • Friday is National Grand Marnier Day. We suggest the Grand Marnier Cheesecake in CV Steak. It’s a generous portion of Grand Marnier laced cheesecake in a graham cracker crust dunked in chocolate. Sounds good, huh!
  • Sunday is National Ice Cream Day but everyday should be National Ice Cream Day at the restaurants in CVI, Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. Here’s why: we have a special arrangement with Hoch Family Creamery located right here in Minden to make ice cream for our restaurants fresh every week. We place our order on Mondays: the product is made Tuesday, sets up on Wednesday and is delivered the next day. Enjoy!
  • Monday is National Get Out of the Doghouse Day. Depending how deep the hole you dug to get into the doghouse, you could always dig out with an overnight stay at the Carson Valley Inn (perhaps in a suite?) with dinner in CV Steak.
Upcoming Event Reminders:
  • Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk: Just put this on your calendar for now - it’s not until next Thursday, July 20. The theme is “Patriotic” so we wanted to get this information to you before you put away your Independence Day decorations. Next week - a controversy around the wine walks?
  • Summer Fun Clay Shoot: August 6 – 8.
  • 2017 Mixed Scramble: the second weekend in September.

Kenny Was Incredible, Aaron Watson's Story, Why Visit Carson Valley, More

Last Friday’s Kenny Loggins Concert:
Incredible . . . for a number of reasons. Kenny could not have been more audience friendly . . . He even wandered down one of the aisles while singing and many up-close pictures were snapped by at first startled, but pleasantly surprised fans. The atmosphere was reminiscent of Cheers as so many in the audience seemed to know so many other people’s names . . . and what positive comments from those enjoying their first concert at TJ’s Corral. The evening was captured in this review from our friends at Tahoe OnStage.  We could go on, but that’s looking backwards. So, looking forward to this Friday’s concert . . .

This Will Inspire You To Never Give Up: “Never let someone discourage you from chasing your dreams. Let their doubt fuel your fire.” This is from a flash card that Aaron Watson shows in the above video which plays to the background of a medley of many of his songs. It’s the story of a country singer who was told he’d never make it by an industry that now supports him. He is an inspiring artist who understands the importance of his fans and you’ll get to hear him along with Clare Dunn this Friday in TJ’s Corral. Click here for more information and tickets.

How Far Away From the Stage Will I Be?
How Far is My Seat from the TJ’s Stage? This question was asked in one form or another quite a bit before the Kenny Loggins Concert (lots of first-timers to TJ’s) so let’s put this into perspective for everyone buying tickets for upcoming concerts: From the farthest seat to the front of the stage is less than 100 feet . . . a distance we checked from three different locations with an accurate golf rangefinder. To put this in perspective: An NHL Hockey Ring is 200 feet long – that’s twice as much. A football field is 160 feet wide – that’s over 1½ times more. The distance between first and third base on a baseball diamond is 127 feet – still less distance than you’d be from the front of the stage if you stood in the farthest corner of the grass viewing area in TJ’s.  The length of an NBA Basketball court is 94 feet and that’s about how far you are from the front of the stage in the furthest-away seat we sell!

And Still to Come in TJ’s with tickets available on our web site:
Get These Events on Your Calendar:
  • Today is World Blood Donor Day: Since it’s probably already too late for you to schedule a donation today, here’s an idea: United Blood Service’s Annual All American Blood Drive at the CVI is Wednesday, June 28 and you can get on the schedule now.
  • Thursday is the second 2017 Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk  in Gardnerville. This month it’s a “Western Theme” so be sure to swing through Sharkey’s Casino for a stop at the Silver Dollar Bar as you stroll around town sipping and chatting on what is forecast to be a most pleasant evening for just about any outdoor mingling!

Touchdown at Topaz
Why Visit the Carson Valley?  Depends who you ask and their hot buttons or “point of view.” Thanks to some targeted efforts by the Carson Valley Visitors Authority, a number of articles have been popping up recently by writers who have visited the area. They all have a different “take” and here is one by Curt Johnson who says the Carson Valley is A Must For Your Next Vacation Spot!  And if you’re coming our way on vacation, be sure to stay right here at the Carson Valley Inn in our Hotel, Motor Lodge or RV Park!

Chris Twomey has been writing and playing music around the country since 2003.  Born and raised in the Sacramento valley, his roots are deep into a genre of folk-rock.  From 2Me to The Diva Kings to Dad's LPs to whatever is next. Justin Lee is the west coast’s answer to new country music. With roots in small town Yerington, Nevada, Justin Lee is bringing a new level of excitement to country as we know it. Justin opened for Mark Chesnutt in October of 2014 at We Dig Mining, a fundraiser to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nevada. A Night In The Country – Nevada’s largest country music festival – featured Justin on the main stage prior to The Band Perry in 2015. Cliff and Dave are powerhouse singer/gospel drummer Cliff Porter and southern-fried singer/guitarist Dave Berry. Often seen fronting the band Jelly Bread, the duo provides an evening of sultry R&B, funk and swinging rock ’n’ roll,

Lee Brice Saturday, Nevada Football Coach Jay Norvell Coming, Penny Progressive Winner, More

Nevada Football Coach Coming to CVI – You are Invited!
Nevada Football – all of us Northern Nevada fans are wondering about the details of the new-look offensive and the defensive schemes planned by new Nevada football coach Jay Norvell for the 2017 season. Why “wonder” any longer . . . Ask him face-to-face next Wednesday when Coach Norvell will be right here at the Carson Valley Inn as part of the Nevada Coaches’ Caravan. The doors to our Sierra Room open at 5:45 PM and Coach Norvell will be joined by basketball coaches Eric Musselman and Amanda Levens, as schedules permit for the Wolf Pack hoops coaches. After a brief presentation, the coaches will be available for questions. The “Coaches’ Caravan” is free and open to the public – a courtesy RSVP to Holly Aycock at (775) 682-6961 is requested.

15 Days in the Life of the CVI - Why We Like Working Here!
Those of us who hangout in the Blog Writers Cave are often asked what it’s like to work at the Carson Valley Inn. Let’s just take a peek at a recent 15-day window and we think you’ll get some insight into the variety of our experiences, the satisfaction we often feel, and the incredible people we get to meet:
Kids (and their parents) Love Helicopters,
CVI in the background
  • Let’s Start Outside: On April 29 country legend Wynonna Judd performed in TJ’s Corral to a sold-out crowd, many of whom had never been to a concert in TJ’s. The following weekend Patra Corp brought 300 of their employees in from around the country for themed parties and entertainment on both Friday and Saturday nights under a 7,000 square foot tent in TJ’s Corral. Saturday’s party and dinner went on in the pouring rain proving once again, despite obstacles, the show must go on! A few days later we watched the Care Flight helicopter land in our new parking area as part of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Open House and smiled as hundreds of Carson Valley children got to sit in the cockpit, talk to the crew, and enjoy themselves immensely in the recently built new lot which just happens to be a perfect landing spot for Care Flight to land. Last Friday, Turtle’s Last Dance featuring the Davisson Brothers was a farewell party to Stew Stewart who served as our Entertainment Director for the last six years. Then, on Saturday we marveled as over 1000 people experienced Bandtastic 2.0 featuring the student musicians from our Valley high school, middle schools and elementary schools. So many proud parents and grandparents watching their child perform on the same stage that has hosted legends such as Merle Haggard, Charlie Daniels, The Oak Ridge Boys, and many more.
  • Moving Inside During the Same 15 Days: Three lucky CVI casino guests walked away with
    Dawn and Ron
with their Newly Acquired $5,000 Cash
$5,000 each over the past three Saturdays, the most recent being Dawn (pictured with the cash and her husband Ron.) We hosted our Spring Stag Golf Weekend and served as headquarters for the first handful of over 100 independent golf groups who visit the CVI each year. In our Valley ballroom, we saw
Jacks Valley Elementary School’s Andrew Fromdahl named the Douglas County School District Teacher of the Year at the Douglas County Education Foundation’s annual banquet. Both major political parties held their monthly luncheon meetings, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association met here to fine-tune the future of Nevada High School sports, MiFiYi held their annual Molly Awards and over 150 Oakland Police Department retirees held their annual reunion. And those are just the highlights!
  • Want in on This Eclectic World? We have open positions at the CVI and no matter what job you have, you’ll touch one or more of our many events from an insider’s perspective. Check out our openings at this link.
Concert and Event Update
  • Lee Brice Concert this Saturday: Lee Brice fans and the rest of the sure-to-be sold-out crowd attending the Lee Brice Concert this Saturday night will be treated to Lee’s new single “Boy” which will be released this Friday, one day prior to the concert. Last we checked, there were still “standing room only” tickets available - bring a blanket and curl up on the grass area if you wish. You can check availability at this link and get psyched up for the concert by reading this article posted earlier this week by our friends at Tahoe Onstage.
  • Kenny Loggins Concert on Friday, June 9: Based on our ticket sales rate, it’s only a matter of a week or so before this one is sold out. So please, if you’re planning to attend, don’t wait too much longer.
  • Also coming up in TJ’s Corral:
Wine and Whisky:
  • This Thursday is the Mardi-Gras themed 2017 kickoff to Gardnerville’s Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk season. The “deal” is simple: Just $15 to register plus $5 for the "Forever" Glass which can be used at all 2017 Thirsty Third Thursday wine walks. The money raised will help fund the revitalization efforts in the Main Street Gardnerville District. Registration tables will be located at the Main Street Gardnerville office 1407 U.S. Hwy 395 N and at Big Daddy's Bicycles 1546 U.S. Hwy 395 N # 1. You can shorten the process by registering and paying on line. What’s this have to do with CVI? We’re looking out for our sister property Sharkey’s Casino which sits in the middle of the wine wobblers’ path!
  • Saturday is World Whisky Day so it’s only right that we acknowledge and congratulate our friends and next-door-neighbors at the Bentley Heritage project who hoisted the roof onto the silo building at Buckeye and Hwy 395 earlier this week. This clears the path for the race to the finish line to get the Estate Distillery open by early 2018. In case the spelling looked funny, here’s the scoop:  whisky usually denotes Scotch whisky and Scotch-inspired liquors, and whiskey denotes the Irish and American liquors.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Roem Baur tonight and Thursday, The John Dawson Band Friday and Saturday, Rock River Sunday and Monday, Hans Eberbach next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Roem Baur has been featured on the main stage at Super Bowl 50, NBC's The Voice and at CES & SXSW conferences. The John Dawson Band is a Reno based group of five fun-lovin' guys who just like to play music and entertain with a variety of modern country and classic rock. Buddy and Kim from the Buddy Emmer Blues Band perform as Rock River with an evening of blues and other music.  Vocalist and songwriter Hans Eberbach has released a solo album, “Up Is The Only Way Out” and he also sings for Joy & Madness and fronts his own band HANS! and the HOT MESS a band that represents his original singer/songwriter/electronic soul work.
