Jets, Bunko, Pizza, Beer, Vodka, Football - Whew!

Aviation Roundup This Weekend

Looks like we’re in for perfect weather for the Aviation Roundup this Saturday and Sunday at the Minden Tahoe airport. Plenty of free parking will be available with nine buses of varying sizes shuttling guests between the parking areas and the airshow gates. Over 80 vendors and static displays will provide plenty to see and experience. Some of the acts are low-flying and only visible if you’re up close . . . and the whole regalia of the Thunderbirds prior to takeoff is a show in itself which can only be viewed from the airport. Think about what it costs to take a family of four to Disneyland or a major league baseball game. The parking and tickets alone can set you back hundreds of dollars. The Aviation Roundup? Parking is free and a family of four with two adults and two teenagers is just $50 all in – even less if you buy your tickets online in advance (tickets also available at the gate). And our final thought to anyone who might be annoyed by the sounds of jets roaring around the Valley over the next few days: just keep in mind that those are the sounds of freedom!

While the Bunko for Breast Cancer event here at the CVI on October 14 is Sold Out, you can still help make a difference. Please consider donating an item or service to be auctioned during the evening by emailing bunko4breastcancer@ge.com. You can also make a monetary donation online at www.carsontahoe.com/bunko. 100% of all funds raised at this event are donated to Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center enabling them to sponsor the Casting for Recovery Program as well as purchase mastectomy camisoles, wigs and many other medical needs.

Today is Vodka Day. We definitely don’t have a shortage of choices here at the CVI bars – over 10 different vodkas last time we checked. The most popular? Depends which of our bartenders you ask. Some say Grey Goose, some say Absolute and some say it's Tito’s. In the process we did learn that both Tito’s and Smirnoff vodka are gluten-free (just thought we’d pass that along!) And if you get a group of friends together and consume a whole bottle of vodka, don’t throw that bottle away . . . use it in a creative way to celebrate Ship in a Bottle Day, also today!
Today is also National Taco Day and we have a couple of different ways you can mark the occasion at the CVI. In Katie’s, we serve our Fish Tacos Plate with two softshell tacos, tangy slaw, rice and refried beans for just $7.99. And if you’re in the Cabaret Lounge, ask the bartender to order you one of our Two Beef Tacos Bar Bites for just $3.99.
Monday is Beer and Pizza Day. While this combination is equally enjoyable any day of the week, here’s a way to make it even more attractive: every Friday and Saturday from 8:30 PM to midnight at Bodines Casino, small pizzas are just $5 and pitchers of beer are just $5. Add ‘em together and you have the perfect $10 celebration of pizza and beer! And remember, all Bodines pizzas are hand tossed, made to order, and cooked in Bodines’ special high-heat pizza oven!

Alan will take the Packers +2 at the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles –6 ½ versus the Cardinals. Mike’s “Play of the Century” is the Maryland Terps getting 31 points at Ohio State. He will also take the Jets to beat the Browns as a pick’em game.

A Tribute to Stew, Easter Bunny Cakes Return, MMA in TJ's Corral, More

Turtle’s Last Dance – May 12

Stew “The Turtle” Stewart was with us at the Carson Valley Inn for over six years and he helped us transform our approach to entertainment. Since his passing earlier this year we have been working on a party to serve as his “last dance” . . . that’s what he wanted, so that’s what we’re doing! The details are set and we hope you’ll join us on Friday evening, May 12 in TJ’s Corral. The Davisson Brothers will be providing entertainment, admission is free and we encourage you to read about the Turtle’s Last Dance event at this link – especially the thoughts expressed on behalf of the CVI by Joey Whitacre, our Director of Casino Operations and Marketing.

Golf Season Is Here! Monday is Golfer’sDay and whether or not it turns out to be the perfect day for playing golf, it is a timely reminder that planning is well underway for the many, many golf groups and events that center around the Carson Valley Inn this year. We put on two of our own sponsored golf events each year: the Spring Stag Golf Outing coming up on the last weekend in April and our Mixed Scramble held on the weekend after Labor Day. We are also the headquarters hotel for about 100 different groups of golfers who visit each year - from as few as 8 to as many as 100+ golfers and guests. We set up all the details (rooms, golf, receptions, dinners, etc.) and would be glad to tell you more about how it all works – just call Greg Enholm (he’s a PGA type) in our Sales department at 775-783-6615. Now, back to Golfer’s Day: If you have any appreciation for the game, you might read the information at the link. You’ll find out when the original video golf game was created (before 1980 if you can believe it), when miniature golf came about, a fun little prank you can pull on your coworkers and some other interesting tidbits.

Easter Bunny Cakes Are Back! Our Easter Bunny Cakes were such big sellers last year that our bakery crew is bringing ‘em back again for the next 10 days. The cutie pictured with this article is one we found scampering through the bakery last year. The 2017 Bunny Cakes were just coming out of the oven and not to the design stage when our blog came out this morning - but we know they will be similar to last year’s hot sellers. Interested in ordering one? We suggest you stop by Katie’s Bakery Counter as soon as possible. If there are no Easter Bunny Cakes available, we will take orders up to a couple of days before Easter. MMA Bouts Live in TJ's Corral

MMA in TJ’s Corral: Additional information and ticket ordering is now available for the World Fighting Championship MMA bouts happening in TJ’s Corral on Saturday, July 1. Should be a pretty exciting evening and we encourage you to check out the information and contact the WFC with any specific questions.

Well, That Was Prophetic! In last week’s blog we casually wrote “As for the $85,000+, that’s our Penny Progressive Jackpot (as of last night) and while we’re not guaranteeing it will be won this week, we can guarantee that when it does hit it can only be won on one of the Triple Red Hot 7's slots at CVI, Sharkey’s or Bodines.” Well, it “hit” on Thursday, March 30 when a lucky local pocketed $86,619 here at the CVI. The winner asked that we not use their name and we always respect such requests. Now, on to our next prediction: Someone will win a new Toyota Camry or $15,000 in cash on Saturday, April 15 and it will happen here at the CVI. Will it be you?

National Beer Day is this Friday, April 7. Come on by the CVI and enjoy one of our many draft or bottled beers in either the Cabaret Bar or CV Steak Bar. While you’re at it, catch the second round of The Masters on TV and stick around for dinner where you can feast on the Beer Braised Wild Boar Shanks special in CV Steak on Friday night. How's our beer selection you ask? Well, two of us sat down at the CV Steak Bar determined - between the two of us - to drink one of each of our offerings. We had ten different beers each and still had a couple to go when we gave up . . . we figure that should be enough choices for just about any beer drinker!

Concert News: If you are planning to attend the Wynonna and the Big Noise Tour concert on Saturday night, April 29 . . . and you have not yet purchased your tickets . . . we suggest you do so very soon as this concert is just about sold out. Hans Eberbach tonight and Thursday, John Dawson Band Friday and Saturday, Cliff and Dave Sunday and Monday and Denver Saunders Tuesday and Wednesday. The John Dawson Band is a Reno based group of five fun-lovin' guys who just like to play music and entertain with a variety of modern country and classic rock. According to John, “The Washoe County Parole board took matters into their own hands on a wistful spring evening in 1999, and placed these 5 repeat offenders in a working band, demanding we concentrate on Country Music.” The quintet includes Mitch (Lead Guitar), Brian (keys), J.B. (Bass), Jhan (drums) and John Dawson (vocals and guitar). Pizza and Beer, Coffins & Cheer plus Much More

Pizza and Beer, Coffins and Cheer – It's All in the Family!

And by family we mean the Carson Valley Inn and our two sister casinos Sharkey's Casino and Bodines Casino. And here's how it all ties together:

Pizza and Beer: this one falls squarely on Bodines Casino - the perfect place to celebrate Pizza and Beer Day this Sunday or any day! Bodines' 19 different bottled beers and half-dozen beers on tap provide a generous choice of accompaniments for your made-to-order pizza cooked in Bodines stone-fired pizza oven, specially built to maintain a stone surface temperature of 450° and an internal temperature of nearly 600°. Each pizza is hand tossed, loaded with the ingredients you request, rotated during the cooking process and served piping hot!

right across the street in Heritage Park. This event is quite unusual with teams of four pushers propelling a rider in their "handmade" coffin. For some reason there are four pages of rules and those not meeting the rules or not having fun are subject to receiving some type of undefined "special recognition." It's no wonder some participants also tune-up at Sharkey's Silver Dollar Bar before the race!
Cheer: we're back to the Carson Valley Inn for this one and the "cheer" has to do with a Christmas theme to an event we've presented before during a non-holiday season – Late Nite Catechism. Here for one sold-out night in 2014, we’re clearing the decks for two nights in early December for their special approach to Holy Nite Comedy!! Watch next week for the details!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and no one event in the Carson Valley recognizes it more visually, audibly or financially than Bunko for Breast Cancer this Saturday night in our Valley Ballroom. We’ve mentioned this event the last few weeks and we give you this one last reminder in the hopes you will participate or at least stop by and show your support. With sports characters as the theme, you're likely to see anything . . . And please remember all proceeds stay locally and support the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center!

TG Sheppard Next Month: A reminder that TG Sheppard returns for a special acoustic concert in the Valley Ballroom on Saturday night, November 12. His picks this week: take Texas and the points versus Oklahoma in their storied Red River Rivalry and take Purdue and the points in their battle with Illinois for the Perdue Cannon.

Which NFL games are garnering the most chatter by our CVI fans this week? The Cards vs. Niners because who would’ve thought they would both be 1-3 at this point, the Falcons (3-1) vs. the Broncos (4-0) and the Chargers vs. the Raiders because of the obvious local appeal, the tie to Coach Tice and the upward trend for the Raiders.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge: Jonathon “JB” Barton entertains tonight, Justin Lee and his band are in Thursday through Saturday, we show NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and George Pickard performs next Tuesday and Wednesday. With his self-titled EP release in 2015, Justin Lee burst onto the country music scene. The up-and-coming musician has gone from playing in a cover band with his buddies to performing on the same stage as acts like The Band Perry, Parmalee and Jake Owen. Not Another Beer Day!! Not to be confused with International Beer Day (August 5) or National Beer Day (April 7), today is National Drink Beer Day. Turns out that according to one survey, beer is America’s #1 social drink of choice (can you guess what came in second?), Americans love domestic beer over imported beer by a 2-to-1 margin and some states are more prone than others to have beer as the top drink to enjoy with friends at a bar or other social venue. We started counting up how many different bottled beers and draft beers we have between our two bars at the Carson Valley Inn, the Silver Dollar Bar at Sharkey’s Casino and the Casino Bar and the Sports Bar at Bodines Casino and . . . . well the total was close to one of the numbers in this song!

Bunko for Breast Cancer is coming up Saturday, October 8 and we hope you’re planning to attend this jubilant event with eclectically costumed wanna-be-sports-stars in our Valley ballroom. The Nighthawks This Weekend in Cabaret Lounge

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge: John Palmore entertains tonight, The Nighthawks are in Thursday through Saturday, we show NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and Jonathon “JB” Barton performs next Tuesday and Wednesday. A popular local (Gardnerville/Wellington) country and rock band, The Nighthawks specialize in popular dance tunes from the 60's and 70's. The group performs a wide variety of styles covering artists from Alan Jackson to ZZ Top, including great classic country tunes and expert performances of classic rock songs. The Nighthawks are Mike Clark (bass), Leon Leet (guitar), Mark Harris (guitar) John Mcknight (drums) and, when the guys are nice to her, Wendy Adkisson on vocals.
