Christmas Abounds, New December Katie's Specials, New Carpet, More

Minden Park Gazebo Lights Up This Friday
Just Two Blocks from CVI
Christmas Kickoff Weekend!
The next three nights will be filled with Christmas Kickoff traditions within walking distance of either the Carson Valley Inn, Sharkeys Casino or both! Since many people stop in before or after these events for dinner, a cocktail or to warm up, here’s a quick rundown: Thursday evening is the Gardnerville Christmas Kickoff at Heritage Park just across the street from Sharkey’s Casino. Friday evening is the Minden Park Gazebo Lighting just two short blocks from the Carson Valley Inn. And Saturday evening is the annual Parade of Lights that connects our two properties as it traverses south on Highway 395 from Heritage Park to Esmeralda Street in downtown Minden. And if you’re near Genoa on Friday or Saturday, be sure to check this link for information on the Town of Genoa’s Friday evening festivities and Saturday morning Breakfast with Santa.

Disney and Christmas Combine at CVI
Disney and Christmas Collide
 in CVI Hotel Lobby
  • Today is French Toast Day. No need to mess up your kitchen because Katie's serves French Toast (4 slices from our house-baked demi loaves) or Super French Toast (add in 2 eggs any style and 3 slices of bacon or 3 sausage links). Either way, we own the cleanup!
  • Saturday is Eat a Red Apple Day. It's great in concept, but practically speaking we suggest a slice of apple pie in Katie's or take-home a whole apple pie from Katie's Bakery Counter. Alternatively, order the Apple Bread Pudding for dessert in CV Steak.  Granted you’d have to consume a bunch of bread pudding to get a full apple equivalent, but “tis the season!”
  • Sunday is Fritters Day. The most popular fritter is an Apple fritter and, as luck would have it, we make ‘em right here in our Bakery and sell ‘em in Job’s Perk. Not a fritter fan – grab an Apple Danish!
  • Monday is Walt Disney Day. Can't make it to Disneyland or Disney World on Monday? No problem, just come by the Carson Valley Inn and check out the Disney-themed Christmas tree in the hotel lobby! Look carefully – lots of subtle Disney touches in addition to the obvious!
  • Tuesday is Dice Day. If you like to watch them roll perhaps you'd like to learn a little more about the game Craps? Our giant craps slot just inside the casino entrance is perfect: you can watch, play without others looking at you, or study the many help screens!

KTVN's Jamie Hays Interview with Food Closet Chairman Don McRoberts
Share Your Christmas Food Drive Almost Here!
Thinking about what to donate at the upcoming KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive? Here’s a link to the 2018 Most Wanted Items. Can’t decide which way to go? We asked Sarah Sanchez, Director of the Carson Valley Community Food Closet (recipient of all CVI location donations) for the “top five.”  She came back with these six: Jelly, Soup, Canned Fruits and Veggies, Heat and Eats (chili, ravioli, etc.), Boxed Mixes (rice-a-roni type items) and Baking Items (flour, sugar, baking soda, etc.).  You’ll notice that perishables are not on the long or short list . . . those are purchased by the Food Closet all year from the Northern Nevada Food Bank . . . so money is also a welcome donation! We’ll see you here on Friday, December 7 in our west parking lot from 6 AM to 6 PM!

Pardon Our Carpet Fuzz
Starting next week we will begin re-carpeting our casino, a project we have scheduled on Monday through Thursday over the next two weeks. During this time, slots will be moved around to accommodate the process and your favorite slot or table game may be unavailable for a few hours. Of special note: the front casino entrance will be closed off from 4 AM to noon this coming Monday to facilitate this project. Please don’t interpret that to mean we are closed . . . . It’s all part of our ongoing process of renewing, refreshing, refurbishing and remodeling the CVI!
Football and Other Sports at the Inn
  • Our Guys Picks!  Another pathetic (sorry, but the word fits) week for "Our Guys."  Greg went 2 & 0 and the other three were a collective 0 & 6.  According to one of the quartet, “We are thankful there are only four weeks left of this abhorrent exercise of awful hypothesizing!”  So, without further ado here are the Week 12 picks: Greg will take UCF -3 against Memphis and the Jets +9 ½ at the Titans.  Steve is sticking with betting against the Saints which has been a loser the past three weeks . . . give him the Cowboys +8 and the over 53 in the same game.  Mike sticks to the college route taking the Texas Longhorns +7 ½ vs. Oklahoma and Boise St. -2 ½ against the Fresno Bulldogs. Alan loves the Raiders +15 against the Chiefs and Appalachian St. -17 ½ against Louisiana Lafayette.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM jackpot is inching close to four thousand dollars as $3,973 is in the pot for whoever picks this week’s 15 winners or props straight up on a $5 Card (play as many as you wish). Any ties are split.
  • Monday Night Football Poker Room Grid:  $330 is available for this coming Monday’s Redskins/Eagles game: That’s $82 and change for the first three quarters and the final score. You must be present to win and any unclaimed winnings roll to the following week. Check the details on this page.
  • Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI.
  • On The Board This Week: NCAA and NFL Football, NBA and NCAA Basketball, NHL Hockey and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship, the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2019 Stanley Cup and the 2019 NBA Championship.
This Week in the Casino

2018 Concert News Soon, Gift Baskets, a Blueberry Weekend, New in Our Fitness Center, More

2018 Concerts in TJ’s Corral
Good news . . . we are wrapping up the last few details and by next Wednesday’s blog we will start announcing some of the artists and dates for our 2018 concert series in TJ’s Corral. Judging by the numerous emails, phone calls, social media messages and inquisitive looks, we know there is a lot of interest – so check back next week as we start revealing what's coming up!

Has This Happened to You?
Gift Baskets Readily Available
in Job's Perk
You’ve just arrived at the Carson Valley Inn for a weekend that includes visiting some friends in our area . . . and you realize you forgot a hostess gift. Or, you’re here at the CVI for lunch and just remembered it’s someone’s birthday back at the office. We may be able to help – read on  . . .
A couple of us got in really early one day this week and stumbled up to Jobs Perk for a hot cup of wake-me-up coffee while we pondered what to write for this blog. As the coffee kicked in we started looking around, saw a few gift baskets, chatted with the ladies in Job’s Perk and found out some interesting information: turns out they’ve really ramped up what they can do in the way of Gift Baskets in Job’s Perk. Unless we just got hit by a panic buying spree, Job’s Perk has pre-made baskets on hand for those quick grab-and-go situations. If you’ll give us a few minutes, we can also custom assemble one for you in a variety of sizes with anything we have in Job’s Perk: wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages, coffee, packaged food, CVI logoed items, etc.   Anyway, the next time you need a last-minute gift, or just want to do something thoughtful, we may just be able to help!

Run, Lift, Repeat
All New Fitness Equipment This Week!
We know that overnight visitors to the Carson Valley Inn don’t come here with the intention of doing heavy workouts. However, judging by the wear and tear on the equipment we just removed, both the aerobic and weight equipment in the fitness room near our indoor pool get used quite regularly. So, as we were finishing up this week’s blog, we snapped the above pictures right after the installation of all new equipment: two ellipticals, two treadmills, a recumbent bike, a TRX Pro System (not shown)  and a Paramount Multi Station with everything you need to tone all major muscle groups. The fitness room, indoor pool, and two large hot spas are available at no charge to all registered guests in our Hotel, Motor Lodge and RV Park daily from 6 AM to midnight.

Eagles & Ag This Weekend
A warm welcome to the 200+ participants in this weekend’s many sold-out tours, social events and workshops connected with the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 16th Annual Eagles & Agriculture event! We are honored to be associated with this prestigious annual celebration of a key part of Carson Valley’s heritage and wish all those in attendance a most pleasant weekend!

Cookies, Pastries, Coffee, Cake!

Share Your Christmas - But Some Catechism & Thanksgiving First, Please!

Share Your Christmas at the CVI on Friday, December 9!  Hard to believe the annual KTVN Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive is only three weeks away!  Raley’s Gardnerville is making donations easy with their $10 grocery bags. Channel 2 has information on their website and so does the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, the recipient of all the Minden location donations. What can you bring? It’s all on the list on this page. Who is anchoring the event? KTVN’s Arianna Bennett, Ryan Canaday and Zac Mooney who have all been at our location before and certainly “know the drill!” Join us on December 9 from 6 AM to 6 PM.

What Could Sister Be Looking For?
Find Out December 1 or 2!
What the Heck is Sister’s Christmas Catechism? It's "CSI: Bethlehem" in a holiday mystery/comedy extravaganza from the authors of Late Nite Catechism. Join the fun (or be part of it!) as Sister takes on the mystery that has intrigued historians throughout the ages - whatever happened to the Magi's gold?  We know Mary used the frankincense and myrrh as a sort of potpourri - they were in a barn after all. And now, 2000 years later, thanks to the recent passing of State Question 2, it can be more than potpourri!  Anyway, back on point:  Retelling the story of the nativity, as only Sister can, this hilarious holiday production has Sister employing her own scientific tools and, assisted by a local choir as well as a gaggle of audience members, creating a living nativity unlike any you've ever seen. With gifts galore and bundles of laughs, Sister’s Christmas Catechism  is a “Howling Day of Obligation” you won’t want to miss!  Sister’s Christmas Catechism runs on two consecutive nights, Thursday and Friday, December 1 and 2. The show is the same both nights – at least it starts out with that intention. Tickets are $22 and are available at the hotel desk or you can order by phone at 775-783-6606.

Got Something Like This We Can Borrow?
Speaking of Nativity Scenes: Turns out Sister’s advance list of demands and props is extensive (what are we supposed to do, slap her hands with a ruler and say no?). These two we don’t have on hand so, if you can help us by loaning us the following for a few days (Nov. 29 – Dec 3), Sister promises to bless you with a few tickets for her show: One (1) Small Nativity Set.  A painted set is preferred and, please note, it is best that it not be an expensive set. • One (1) LARGE Lawn Nativity Set.  Let us know by sending us an email and we’ll have one of the altar boys give you a call.

Dump Him or Her, Choose Us! We're willing to bet most of our readers didn't know this Thursday is Unfriend Day. Heck, we'll even bet most of our readers, including us until we found this, didn't even know there was such a day! And if you can honestly say you have heard of it, did you also know that comedian Jimmy Kimmel founded Unfriend Day in 2014? Probably wondering where we're going with all this… There actually is a reason: while you're unfriending all the people you don't know, will you please take a minute and "like," "friend," "follow" or otherwise engage with us on Facebook and Twitter . . . Thanks!

Did You Know: Saturday is Have a Bad DayDay. In our opinion half of the country already experienced this Day a week ago Tuesday! And no, this is not us making a political statement – we wouldn't  do so because we have been most fortunate to do quite a bit of business with both major political parties and we sincerely appreciate this business. So, here's the point: “Party” is our business with many parties and other social and business events happening regularly in our Valley Ballroom. So whether or not you are having a bad day on Bad Day Day, start planning your next party or other event here at the CVI by calling Carrie today at 775-783-6673.

Penny Progressive Climbing Faster! “Old hat” to Carson Valley Inn players, we recently (like last week) linked our popular Penny Progressive to Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. Now 26 slots are feeding the jackpot which is naturally growing at a more rapid rate. Steve Forrester, our “Corporate” Slot Director (he hates it when we give him a title like that) jump-started the idea many months ago based upon comments from our Bodines and Sharkey’s customers who were nudging us with “hey, why can’t we get in on this penny progressive jackpot!?” Centered on the Triple Red Hot 7's theme – one of IGT's most popular games – the jackpot increases based on play. A max coin bet is 90 cents and hitting the jackpot can be a prize in the tens of thousands of dollars. Our last 2 winners have pocketed over $95,000 each . . . but don't wait ‘cause it's hit anywhere from $10,000 on up.  Could mean a new car, new boat, one heck of a new wardrobe or a closet full of expensive new shoes and even the closet remodeling necessary to make room!  Someone playing these machines at CVI, Bodines or Sharkey’s will win . . . it could be you!

Going Bonkers for
Bunko for Breast Cancer
It’s a Bird, It’s Plane It’s a . . . .Bunco? Pamela Litka is like Clark Kent. During the day, she's a mild-mannered Projects Quality Coordinator for the GE plant in Minden. After hours, she turns into a dynamic Bunko for Breast Cancer Volunteers Committee Lead (we’re not sure exactly what that means, but she is such dynamo when it comes to this event that the title must bestow super powers!) Pamela and a group of focused GE employee volunteers spearhead the Bunko for Breast Cancer evening at the Carson Valley Inn every October in our Valley Ballroom. This year it’s on Saturday, October 8. Over the years this event has raised well into six figures for breast cancer care in Northern Nevada.  This is not your normal fundraiser. It is a raucous five hours of 200+ costumed and screaming (mostly female) bunco players who raise more hell – and more money – than any other event that takes place in our Valley Ballroom all year. Oh, and why “bunko” in some cases and “bunco” in others? Guess you’ll just have to stop by on October 8 to find out!

Sports and Race Book:
  • This week you can bet Major League Baseball, Horseracing, NFL and NCAA Football, WNBA Playoffs and Sunday’s New England 300 NASCAR race. Also on the board: futures bets on who will win the World Series, 2016 Season NCAA Football Championship and the February, 2017 Super Bowl.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $2832 – pick all 15 NFL games straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours!
  • Chatter around the Sportsbook after last weekend’s NFL games: After getting shutout by the Niners in Week 1, the crew in our Sports Book said nobody could get up the gumption to place a bet on the Rams last week. Not only did the Rams cover against Seattle, they won outright! The early trend this week is that no one seems to be ready to bet on the Bears for their Sunday night game against Dallas. Just wondering if there will be a correlation!

No Dancing on the Bus, Please! Actually, we are all in favor of dancing on the bus because the shuttle service between the Carson Valley Inn and the Genoa Candy Dance this Saturday and Sunday is run by the Town of Genoa, not by us . . .  so “they” make the rules! Whether you choose to sit calmly or dance in the aisles, everything you want to know about the Candy Dance is at this link and we suggest you read the specific information about the shuttle at this link.

What - Only One? Sunday is One Hit Wonder Day celebrating those artists who had their one big song . . . and then faded away not to be heard from again. Anyone remember these one-hit wonders: “Come on Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners? How about “Who Let the Dogs out?” by the Baha Men? Or stretching back further, “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” by Steam?  And then there's the infamous "Macarena" by Los del Río – ranked the "#1 Greatest One-Hit Wonder of All Time" by VH1 in 2002. In next week’s blog we’ll announce a November appearance in the Valley Ballroom by a country artist who was on the opposite end of the hit spectrum – he had 15 #1 hits back in the seventies and eighties! Meanwhile, what were your favorite one-hit wonders? Let us know in the comments section below.
