Burgers, Football, Bunko, Trippin' in the Cabaret and More at the Carson Valley Inn

Welcome to Katie's!
Katie’s Captures Kudos
“Hiding out in Minden is a 24 hour restaurant and coffee shop that is dedicated to serving up mouthwatering food whenever you want it. Whether you're looking to start off your day with a hearty breakfast or end it with some late night grub, Katie's Country Kitchen is worth checking out.”  This is just part of a very complimentary article that popped up on onlyinyourstate last week. We’d like to claim we wined and dined an influencer and this was the result. However, unless we’re missing something, we can’t trace the origin back to anything we did. So, whoever suggested these folks look at Katie’s, thank you!

Tedi Burger & Friends Kicking It Up at the Minden Moo Last Weekend
Minden Moo a Kick!
We, and a lot of you, had a fun time at the Minden Moo last Friday and Saturday as we celebrated the Carson Valley Inn’s 35th Birthday. Our thanks go out to all who participated in the Mechanical Bull Riding competition, Horseshoes Tournament, Western Dancing, Justin Lee Concert and other events. A special thanks to Coors and to the 4H members and their parents for helping Saturday night. Concertgoers’ generosity resulted in adding over $800 to the Douglas County 4-H Leader’s Council fund for those always-present unexpected expenses.

Katie's Smokehouse Burger - Yum!
Burgers, Wind, Peaches, Bananas
  • Thursday is Burger Day.  We like the simplicity of this statement attributed to New York restaurateur and Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer: “At the base level, a burger is a piece of meat and a bun with something on it. It’s simple but it seems to make a lot of people happy.” We serve a variety of burgers at all four of our properties seven days a week and we’ll admit that we don’t adhere to Mr. Meyer’s simplification approach. For an eclectic kick-your-week-off variety, stop by for Burger Monday in Betsy’s Big Kitchen at SlotWorld and choose from a Volcano Burger, Black & Blue Burger, Fish Burger, Hangover Burger and Drunken Burger.  If you’re here at the CVI, grab one of our Smokehouse Burgers (pictured above) any day!
  • Friday is Ride the Wind Day.  For just the whistle of the wind in your ears, enjoy a Glider Ride through SoaringNV at the Minden Airport. Want the full sound and power experience? Schedule a ride on the Sentimental Journey B17 when it’s here at Minden Airport September 3 – 8!
  • Saturday is Peach Pie Day and Tuesday is Banana Lover’s Day.  We’ll take the pie route for both . . . Peach Pie and Banana Cream Pie are both available daily by the slice while dining in Katie’s or a take-home a whole pie from the selection of house-made bakery goodies available at Katie’s Bakery Counter.

Raise Your Hand to Volunteer
You say you’d like to volunteer to help in our community but you’re not sure where to go or who to call? The 2019 Leadership Douglas County Class is making it very easy to consider all the possibilities with 40 organizations scheduled to be at the first annual Volunteer Expo Douglas County this Thursday, August 22 from 3:30 -7:00 PM at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center. Admission is Free and it’s a great opportunity for adults and children to learn where and how they can help!

Bunko for Breast Cancer Getting Close
Your chance of winning Bunco is 1 in 12.  In the United States, a woman's chance of being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer is 1 in 8.  These odds, and the women and men it affects, is the reason why BHGE has hosted Bunko for Breast Cancer since 2004 donating over $300,000 in support of the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center. The annual event takes place in our Valley Ballroom every fall and it’s now just two months away on Saturday, October 19. Learn more about this very beneficial and extremely fun event by clicking here.

Battle of the Badges Blood Drive August 29
Whose side are you going to take, the Fire Department’s or the Sheriffs? It’s all part of the fun associated with the Battle of the Badges Blood Drive next Thursday, August 29. Every day in the U.S., patients in hospitals, surgical centers and emergency treatment facilities need approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells. You can help make the sure blood needs of our community are covered by signing up to donate right here at the CVI next Thursday. The folks from Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services) will have their bloodmobiles set up in our west lot along Hwy 395 from 10 AM to 6 PM.  You can make an an appointment by clicking here.

Watch Out - This Guy May Be in Our Lobby This Weekend!

Who!?
Raptors Running Rampant is what the 200+ participants in this weekend’s Eagles & Agriculture event are hoping to see as they gawk and gaze from local ranches, barns and highways. Now if you just want an up-close look at a falcon or owl, we suggest you keep your eyes open as you walk in and out of our hotel entrance this weekend. At various times you’re likely to see either – or even both – as the weekend’s activities unfold.  And our thanks goes out to the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce for headquartering so many of this weekend’s “Eagles and Ag” activities here at the CVI!
No, You Can't Deduct the Dog Under the New Tax Guidelines!
Tax Time Rolling In
You’ve been asking about Win/Loss Statements for the tax year 2018 so here’s a quick reminder on how it works: we do need your signature on a signed request in order to run one of these reports. However, we make it easy for you using this form.  And if you had winnings at more than one of our locations, you can check the appropriate locations (Carson Valley Inn, Bodines Casino, Sharkey’s Casino and SlotWorld Casino) and we’ll get all of your 2018 reports prepared.  As a reminder, all we can report for you is play recorded while you’ve been using your Player Club card. Also a reminder that we cannot, and do not, offer any type of tax advice.

Ronnie Milsap Saturday, Streaking Jets Just 45 Days Away, More

  • Ronnie Milsap . . . Ray Charles personally inspired him to get started, he collaborated with Elvis - at Elvis' request, he has a method for keeping his voice in shape and he has recorded with Leon Russell, Willie Nelson, Little Big Town, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan. It’s all captured in this Q&A piece Tim Parsons of Tahoe Onstage put together after a lengthy interview with the country artist just a few days ago. Milsap will be performing his classic songs like "Smoky Mountain Rain," "I Wouldn't Have Missed it for the World," "No Getting Over Me," "Any Day Now," and many more this Saturday in TJ’s Corral.
  • The Children’s Cabinet: If you don’t remember anything else about The Children’s Cabinet, just remember this: their mission is to keep children safe and families together. We invite you to read more about their mission, philosophy and values. The Children’s Cabinet provides a wide range of crisis intervention services, including Safe Place, a service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for youth experiencing violence, abuse or exploitation. Programs also include runaway and homeless youth services, substance abuse and gang intervention programming, work experience training, and independent living for former foster care youth. So, when you purchase a ticket for this Saturday’s  Ronnie Milsap concert, you’re not only “signing up” for an evening of nostalgic country entertainment, you may be potentially helping someone, somewhere in northern Nevada, sidestep or mitigate a family crisis.
  • The box office and “Will Call” open at 4 PM, the doors open at 7:15 PM, the concert starts at 8 PM and you may purchase your tickets at this link and help benefit The Children's Cabinet! Oh, and the obligatory stuff: please leave the lawn chairs, pets and outside beverages at home and if you must smoke during the show, please do so only in the designated area near the DCSO fence.
CVI is a Proud Sponsor of the Aviation Roundup
As the host hotel for the performers, we’ve been working behind the scenes for many months with the Aviation Roundup staff and have watched with our jaws open as they have upped the game from the 2015 show substantially. Sure the US Air Force Thunderbirds and the The US Navy Tac Demo Team will be back . . . but they’ll be joined at the October 7 & 8 show by the U.S. Army Golden Knights the Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Demonstration Team and an impressive “A List” of civilian performers for an air show that will rival what you’d see in a major metropolitan area - all right here at the Minden-Tahoe Airport. Catch the video above as Minden-Tahoe Airport Ops Supervisor Chris Johnson tells the story of what the event will bring.

Our Usual “This and That” . . .
Katie's Super Waffle - Want One?
  • What is it About the Third Wednesday in August? Not at all relevant to the CVI, but we find it somewhat ironic that, for two years in a row, the Minden-Tahoe Airport must close to aircraft operations for a few hours on the last Wednesday of August for a presidential visit. For you aviation geeks, the info is here.
  • Thursday is Peach Pie Day and of course we sell whole peach pies at the Katie’s bakery counter or by the slice in Katie’s restaurant.
  • Thursday is also National Waffle Day: The Katie’s Super Waffle is served from 5 AM until noon daily and includes a fresh-made waffle with two eggs any style and choice of three strips of bacon or three sausage links all for $7.99. And for a nontraditional way to celebrate National Waffle Day, dig into a pile of Waffle Fries in the Jackpot Café at Sharkey’s Casino!
  • Friday is National Whiskey Sour Day: we asked Erin at the Cabaret Bar to do one of her videos on how she makes a whiskey sour. She just gave us “the look” and, in a friendly manner, said “it’s just sour mix and whiskey. Even with all my talents I can’t make that sounds exciting!”
  • Without Them We Are Sunk! We’re talking about our incredible IT Staff that keeps things together at the Carson Valley Inn, Bodines Casino and Sharkeys Casino. We figure they must have a highly efficient lobbyist to get all four of these special “Days” lumped into one week. So, as a salute to them we recognize Internaut Day on Thursday, Webmistress Day Saturday and both Race Your Mouse Around the Icons Day and Crackers Over The Keyboard Day Monday.
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Roem Baur tonight and Thursday, the John Dawson Band Friday and Saturday, Paul Covarelli, Sunday and Monday and Cliff and Dave Tuesday and Wednesday. Roem Baur is a classically trained opera singer who ultimately answered the call of rock n' roll. The John Dawson Band is a Reno based group who entertain with a variety of modern country and classic rock. Paul Covarelli displays exceptional versatility on hits from artists like The Beatles, Merle Haggard and Jimmy Buffet plus the sounds of jazz, blues and Latin. Cliff and Dave provide an evening of sultry R&B, funk and swinging rock ’n’ roll. Once the NFL season starts we’ll be going to live entertainment Tuesday through Saturday and featuring Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football in The Cabaret Lounge.
