Our friends at Visit Carson Valley posted a blog last week enticingly headlined “Ultimate Carson Valley Bucket List: 20 Must Do’s in 2020.” Whether you’re looking for a new travel bucket list, or simply want a fun challenge as a Carson Valley local or past visitor, this assembly of 20 suggestions presented in no particular order is sure to have a few that pique your interest. Our favorite? Why #19 of course!

The headline of this short article sounds like typical casino marketing hype but for two lucky winners in the last few days it was a true statement!

We had a lucky local win $33,933.66 on the HUGE Buffalo Stampede machine and we respected the request to not use their name or picture. The money still went in their pocket!

Chris Heidemann jumped right in for a picture after he won $10,491 on our Spirit Link game. He and his wife Dianne came up for the night from Camino for their 16^th Anniversary. They had a very nice dinner in CV Steak with his parents Sig & Lila Heidemann who live locally and have been long-time friends of the CVI. Chris’ Spirit Link jackpot followed earlier slot wins the same evening and he plans to use his winnings to help pay for his new trailer/dirt hauler. We didn’t ask, but we sure hope he picked up the dinner tab for his parents!

We had so many favorable comments on the Ahi Poke Tuna in last week’s blog that we asked the chef to put together one of his favorite combinations. Off the top section of our menu he chose the Roasted Red & Golden Beet Salad - a tasty blend of the two earthy beets, baby mixed greens, pickled red onions, crumbled goat cheese, candied walnuts and balsamic reduction. For an entrée, he prepared the Crispy Seared Panko Crusted Calamari Steak in clarified butter and added a lemon and brown butter caper sauce.

When It Hits 65° in Late February

With the temperature forecast to hit the mid-sixties today, we just have to put in another plug for our Spring Stag Golf Tournament on the last week in April and our Group Golf Packages available anytime during the April - October Carson Valley “golf season.”

And since golf is one of the major events in the Mike Tice Foundation Charity Weekend For The Kids at the end of June, we invite you to check out the participation and sponsorship packages. Some of the other major events surrounding the weekend include a special private Happy Hour prior to the Charlie Daniels Band concert on Friday, June 26 and a revamped Carson Valley Summer Fest on Saturday afternoon and evening, June 27. Dragon Links Arrive, Mixed Terrain Biking, Golf, New Ahi Appetizer, More from the Carson Valley Inn

Yet Another Recreation Bonanza
in the Carson Valley!

We’ve been talking to members of the Alta Alpina Cycling Club regarding some of the major bicycling events they have coming up in 2020. In the process, we found out something we didn't know: Mixed Terrain Riding has been climbing in popularity while some of the more traditional road races and specialty challenges have been waning. We also learned that this incredible local nonprofit organization has mapped and charted 16 Scenic Carson Valley Mixed Terrain Rides and the Carson Valley Inn is centrally located to the start of all of them! Many of these rides are available year-round and their popularity is certain to grow as the spring months arrive. Whether you're an individual cyclist or travel with fellow members of a cycling club, we invite you to stay at the CVI and enjoy as many of these adventures as your time and endurance can handle - ride everything from asphalt highways to remote single track! Here's a link to the summary page of the 16 rides. Clicking on any ride will bring up more details, a map and the ability to download a GPX file to go right into your bike's computer! Seems every time we turn around we're discovering a new way that visitors can and do enjoy the scenery and recreation of the beautiful Carson Valley!

It’s only two months until our Spring Stag Golf Tournament on the last week in April - an event we consider our official kickoff to the golf season each year. Golf is actually played year-round in Carson Valley depending upon the weather . ... and we’ve certainly had plenty of good golf days every month since the spring of 2019! While a plethora of returning and new golf groups have booked their CVI-based trips for the 2020 season, we still have room for more! Ahi Tuna Poke Appetizer

The Ahi Tuna Poke appetizer in CV steak starts with ahi tuna tossed with scallions, shallots, garlic, ginger, sesame oil and soy and served on top of crispy tostadas with avocado and chipotle aioli. Marley was nice enough to present this attractive and tasty new appetizer in the picture above. We spoke with her and the other servers working the same night and they all said this is now one of our most popular appetizers. Give it a try next time you have dinner in CV Steak or when you just stop by for appetizers and drinks. Oh, for the record, we devoured everything on the plate minutes after the picture was “snapped!”

Katie's and CV Steak are both offering their regular menu selections plus specials on Valentine's Day, Friday, February 14.

The CV Steak regular menu features a selection of appetizers and a generous range of entrees including steaks, chops, seafood, chicken and pasta dishes. CV Steak is also offering two Valentine's Day Specials for $29: Pomegranate Orange Glaze Pacific Salmon with sautéed green asparagus and Tomahawk Berkshire Pork Chop with garlic butter mushrooms. Both specials include the CV Steak signature tableside tossed salad, sour dough baguette, creamery butter, and choice of twice-baked, baked or au gratin potatoes. CV Steak’s Valentine’s Day Special Dessert is Dark and White Chocolate Mousse Dome with macerated Strawberries. CV Steak opens at 4:30 p.m. and reservations are always recommended by calling 775-783-6650. The CV Steak Sunset Specials will not be offered on Valentine’s Day. NOTE: All CV Steak reservations were filled at the time this was written but check back on Friday as we do sometimes receive cancellations.
Katie's Valentine's Day specials run from 2 to 10 p.m. The Shrimp & Penne Pasta tossed with vodka tomato cream sauce is $13.99 and the 12 oz. Double Pork Chop with mustard mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables is $15.99. The regular Friday Katie’s special will not be served on Valentine’s Day. Katie’s seating is on a first-come basis.

We Wore Red – Now Let’s Take Action!

The day shift staff in Katie’s “front of the house” marked National Wear Red Day® last Friday as did others at the CVI. It was all part of the federally designated American Heart Month and the American Heart Association’s signature women’s initiative, Go Red for Women. And The $5,116 Progressive Jackpot Winner Is

As of last night, we actually do not know who the winner is yet. Here's what we do know: one of the many sports fans who played our $5 Pro Pk'em Progressive Parlay card on Super Bowl Sunday got all 15 picks correct! That's good enough to take sole possession of the $5116 jackpot. All you need to do is "come forward" at either Sharkey's or the CVI with your winning ticket. And, as we hinted was possible in last week's blog, two of the 15 picks were actually ties and all ties were marked as winners. Remember, we don't know who bought the winning ticket so it's up to you to come in and claim your prize.

These were just some of the mouthwatering treats we caught in the picture above taken at our bakery counter earlier this week. While we can’t guarantee which of these will be there the next time you stop in, we do encourage you to check the bakery counter every time you swing by Katie’s because there seems to be something new cropping up just about every other day!

Slowly Braised Bone-In Beef Short Rib

New in CV Steak!

While we were focusing on the Super Bowl and Tanya Tucker’s Grammy nominations the last couple of weeks we neglected to let everyone know we’ve added some new entrées and appetizers in CV Steak. We haven’t tried them all yet, but we do really want to recommend the Slowly Braised Bone-In Beef Short Rib pictured above. This “immediate hit” is served with red wine demi-glaze, Yukon gold mashed potatoes (you can also choose baked or au gratin), vegetable and, of course, the CV Steak signature tableside tossed salad. Our "people" are dotting the I's and crossing the T's on the arrangements for at least two more 2020 concerts in TJ's Corral as we march towards finalizing our seven or eight-concert schedule. Meanwhile, tickets are on sale now for the two concerts already announced: Tanya Tucker and special guest Aubrie Sellers (part of Tanya's CMT Next Women of Country Tour) on Saturday June 6 and the Charlie Daniels Band concert in TJ's on Friday, June 26.
