A Message from TG Sheppard, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and More

TG Sheppard Invites You to CVI
TG Sheppard sent us this short video a few days ago inviting everyone to join him and  his special guest and wife Kelly Lang at his upcoming concert in the Valley Ballroom on Saturday night, November 12. Tickets are $25 and are available at the hotel desk or by calling 775-783-6606. Our suggestion: make it a weekend with our special 2-night TG Sheppard hotel package which includes tickets for TG’s Concert and $50 towards your CVI restaurant dining. All the details are at this link.

I have Mystical Powers and I'm Here To Help You: We're not sure what type of creatures or characters you'll run into on Monday at the CVI as our employees are welcome to come to work in costume and take part in our annual Employee Halloween Costume Contest. Unlike the majestic beauty displayed by Bonnie Cosgrove during Halloween 2015, sometimes these costumes can be somewhat scary! To help soothe any potential trauma, we’re offering all of our INN Club members 5X Points all 24 hours of October 31st!

Leave the Cooking to Us on Thanksgiving:
  • Our Thanksgiving Dinner to Go for up to Ten is back this year  . . . includes a fully-cooked 18-20 pound turkey plus all the trimmings - mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans amandine, cranberry sauce, a pumpkin pie, rolls and butter all for just $89.00 plus tax. For more information or to order, check at the Katie's cashier counter or call 775-783-6664 after noon today and ask for the Katie's supervisor. We are taking a limited number of orders so please don't miss out!
  • Thanksgiving Dinner Specials will be served in CV Steak and Katie's on Thursday, November 24th. Watch our blog next week for Thanksgiving menus, dinner specials and hours.
A Man Walks Into a Bar and the Bartender Says . . . Actually, you can finish this one if you’d like ‘cause we are looking for a casino bartender! You can get all of the information on this position and the other open positions at the CVI on the employment page on our website.

Put these on your calendar:
  • Christmas Comedy: Sister’s Christmas Catechism comes to the Valley Ballroom Thursday and Friday, December 1 and 2  . . . Tickets are $22 and are available at the hotel desk or you can order by phone at 775-783-6606.
  • KTVN Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive: Mark it down for Friday, December 9 at the entrance to our RV Park. More details next week.
  • Eagles and Ag: The Carson Valley Chamber got together with the local ranching community and moved this event three weeks earlier to January 27 - 29 to increase the eagle and raptor sighting odds.  Our friends at the Chamber said the details are just about finalized and we'll put a link in our blog as soon as we have the info.
  • Annual CVI Clay Shooting Weekend: Flyers and entry forms will be out very soon - but for now circle February 23 – 25, 2017 for two days of clay shooting and plenty of food and fun.
Sports and Race Book:
  • On the Board: This week you can bet the World Series (Cleveland Indians vs. Chicago Cubs), NFL and NCAA Football, NBA Basketball, NHL Hockey, and the Sunday Goody's Fast Relief 500 NASCAR race.  Also on the board: futures bets on who will win the NBA Championship, NCAA Football Championship and the February, 2017 Super Bowl.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $3477– pick all 15 NFL games straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours!
  • Chatter Around the Sportsbook with Mike and Allen:
    • Last Week: Allen liked the Kansas City Chiefs (at -6½) to cover against the New Orleans Saints. The Chiefs won by six so we had to put a tic mark in the "lost this one" column for Allen. Mike said take West Virginia (-5½) over TCU and the Mountaineers covered easily. He also liked 1-5 Buffalo to beat the spread against the favored-by-22 Northern Illinois. Mike suffered his first "defeat" in the last three weeks as Northern Illinois won by 37!
    • This Week: Allen really likes the Raiders against Tampa Bay in this “pick ‘em” game. Two reasons: they’ve been doing great on the road and they stayed in Florida all of this last week after beating Jacksonville last Sunday. Embarrassed by his first loss, Mike is trying to hide from the spotlight this week with two obscure picks. He likes favorite Kansas State (-6½)  over Iowa State and he projects the underdog Connecticut will cover against East Carolina who is favored by seven.
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Bill Wharton entertains tonight, The Blues Monsters are here Thursday through Saturday, we show NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and Steve Lord performs next Tuesday and Wednesday.  The Blues Monsters is a popular red-hot rockin' blues band from the North Lake Tahoe and Reno area. The quartet performs a powerfull and unique combination of R&B, funk, jazz and Chicago-style blues. Whether paying respects to the masters of traditional blues, or rockin' out other tunes, The Blues Monsters get the whole house up and dancing! Click here for the upcoming lineup of free entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.

Facebook Winner Plus Another Contest Today: "Shout out" to Becky Cohn Kendall who won two tickets to the Michael Martin Murphy Concert in our Facebook contest last week. In a "good karma" gesture, Becky is taking her friend Heather . . . who just happens to be the person who suggested she enter the contest! What's next? Check our Facebook Page today for an easy contest to win a Free Dinner for Two in CV Steak!

Cinco de Mayo at the CVI: Join us Monday, May 5 for Cinco de Mayo with 5X Points all day in the casino plus drawings at noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. for a chance to win up to $5,000 instantly.  The casino bars are offering 16-Ounce Corona Light draft for $2 and Two Beef Tacos for $3.99. Kentucky Derby Update: Graded stakes winner Hoppertunity, the 6-to-1 second choice on the morning line for the  140th Kentucky Derby, will be scratched from the first leg of the Triple Crown because of a problem with his left front foot, trainer Bob Baffert said Thursday.

Vroom, Vroom: Someone will win a Polaris Sportsman® 400 H.O tonight at the CVI!! Our thanks to the folks at Michael’s Cycle Works who were kind enough to provide one of these sporty units for display on our casino floor all month. Drawings are at 6 and 8 p.m. UPDATE: Lyndel G. of Gardnerville was the lucky winner who opted to leave the adventure to someone else and pocketed the $4,500 Cash option.

Are We Really Giving Away $75,000 in Cash? Yes – Guaranteed! Between the CVI and our sister property Bodines Casino we are giving away $75,000 in cash during May and June. That's a bundle of money and all the details are on this page!

Fun Events Coming in May: We routinely put together an extensive internal calendar so all of us at the CVI can try to keep up with "what's goin' on" around here. We thought you might like an edited version of just some of the many events (most with links) happening in May at or near the CVI. For those events nearby, perhaps you'll stop by before or after and enjoy some of our entertainment, food and hospitality!
  • The Michael Martin Murphey Concert is this Thursday, May 1 in TJ's Corral Outdoor Events Center. Tickets are still available and the weather will be great!
  • The Genoa Cowboy Festival is this Friday through Sunday in Genoa – same great weather.
  • The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, May 3.  In case you missed our last few blogs, don't read the local paper, or have had blinders on: Keep your eye on Hoppertunity in the Derby this Saturday – the colt is owned by CVI owner, Mike Pegram! Oh, we really don't think any of our readers wear blinders, but some horses do while racing and we just took a stab at topical humor.
  • Sweet Sippin Sundays start this Sunday, May 4 in Genoa.
  • The NFL Draft is next week on May 8, 9 & 10. We only bring this up because the Draft marks the unofficial beginning of the 2014 Fantasy Football preseason for many local football fanatics!
  • The Carson Valley Arts Council Tempest Celtic Rock Concert is Friday, May 9 at the CVIC Hall in Minden – less than a 5 minute walk from the Inn. Check out our Special Hotel Package.
  • Big Mama's 9th Annual Show & Shine Car Show is Saturday, May 10 in Lampe Park.
  • Mother's Day is Sunday, May 11 and we are offering specials in Katie's and CV Steak plus a  CVI Weekend Hotel Package.
  • May 12 in CV Steak: OK, so this is not really an event as such. But we figure we can include whatever we want in our blog, so just a friendly reminder: Starting May 12, CV Steak is open 7-nights-a-week for the summer!
  • The Monthly CVI Blackjack Tournament is Tuesday, May 13 with all the entry fees paid back out as prize money!
  • The first 2014 Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk is May 15 in the Gardnerville Main Street District. This is a great afternoon "tune up" for . . .
  • The Oak Ridge Boys Concert is Thursday, May 15 in TJ's Corral Outdoor Events Center and tickets are selling fast with more tickets sold than there are remaining (HINT – get on the stick and get your tickets before we start our advertising blitz).
  • The Action/Adventure Expo is Friday & Saturday, May 16 & 17 at the Fairgrounds Pavilion.
  • The Preakness Stakes is Saturday, May 17 and we don't know yet if CVI owner Mike Pegram will have a horse running . . . but you can bet we'll let you know as soon as we know!
  • The Minden Farmer’s Market Starts Tuesday, May 20 and continues on Tuesday evenings thru September on Esmeralda Street in Minden.
  • The first GE Community Concert in Minden Park is Friday evening, May 30 featuring Heartache Tonight (A Salute to the Eagles).  The CVI is proud to be a series sponsor and the host hotel for all Community Concert performers.

Free Four-Wheeler, Kentucky Derby News, Chili Cook-off & Craft Fair this Weekend

In this week's blog: Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair this weekend, what would you do with a free 4-wheeler?, two Kentucky Derby entries with two different owners from Douglas County.

What Would You Do with a Free 4-Wheeler? We don't know if this weekend's drawing winners will pick the $500 cash or a change to "go for" a free 4-wheeler . . . but we do guarantee that a free 4-wheeler (or $4,500 cash on the spot) will be given away at the grand prize drawings next Wednesday, April 30 at 6 & 8 p.m. "Where would I ride a 4-wheeler around here" you ask? Funny, we asked the same question and found that our Carson Valley Visitors Authority has a pretty good list of ATV/OHV Tours & Trails on their web site!

Carson Valley Sertoma Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair This Weekend:
The Carson Valley Sertoma Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair  takes two big steps forward this Saturday and Sunday with the return of the International Chili Society (ICS) chili cook-off competition and the expansion from our west parking lot to TJ's Corral Outdoor Event's Center and the adjacent parking area.
  • Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day with live entertainment by "Carl & the Classics" from noon to 5:00 pm each day. Admission is free.
  • Over two dozen cooks will be competing for cash prizes and to qualify for the ICS World Championship.  Each red chili cook will provide People's Choice Chili for tasting from 10am to 4pm. each day and Sertoma will sell tasting kits at $1.00 for 2 tastes or $5.00 for 10. Great way to warm up on a cool spring day! Green chili and salsa makers will also be on hand.
  • The traditional Shoot & Holler contest (eat a jalapeno, shoot a shot of tequila and holler as loud as you can) will be held for adults and there will be games and contests for both adults and children.
  • Approximately 70 crafter booths will feature handcrafted items, jewelry, clothes, purses, wood crafted items, yard dĂ©cor and bird houses, sunglasses, pet items, jams & jellies, spices, olives, jerky, salsa and much more.
  • Sertoma will be raising funds through their traditional Wheelbarrow of Booze raffle and by selling chili & chili-dogs, burgers, beer, wine, soft drinks and bottled water. Sertoma supports local projects such as hearing aids, Backpack Buddies, the Senior Center, Carson Valley Community Food Closet, DAWG and scholarships for local students.
Mike's Horses – and Steve and Carolyn's Horse, Also:
  • Midnight Hawk finished 2nd by a nose in last Saturday's $500,000 Illinois Derby.
  • Hoppertunity has already shipped to Churchill Downs and is still scheduled to run in the Kentucky Derby on May 3.
  • To make the Derby even more of a "local interest" event this year: Steve and Carolyn Coburn, frequent guests at the Carson Valley Inn and south Douglas County residents, also have a horse running in the Kentucky Derby – the early favorite California Chrome
  • We started calculating the odds of having two Kentucky Derby entries from two different owners in the same basically rural community in Nevada and . . . well, after applying every calculation and analysis in our tool box, this year the odds appear to be 100% if both horses stay fit and ready!

Concert Update:
  • No new concerts to report this week, but we get a page up on our web site for the B. J. Thomas Concert on Thursday, July 10 . . . and all the concerts are now included on this concerts page.
  • The Michael Martin Murphy Concert is coming up next week on Thursday, May 1.  BMI has confirmed that his song Wildfire is one of the most played songs in the history of radio. Take a moment to watch and listen to the lyrics of Wildfire as performed by Michael on the David Letterman Show . . . and then get your tickets and come on out and watch "Murph" and his Band in Concert next week live in TJ's Corral at the CVI!!
  • Facebook fans, here's a link to a post on our page - you can like, comment or share to get in on a drawing for two free Michael Martin Murphey Concert tickets!
In the Casino this Week:
  • Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge: George Pickard performs tonight, Stew Stewart appears Thursday through Saturday and Dale Poune takes the stage Sunday through next Wednesday. Known for his witty audience interaction and quips, Stew can always be humbled if you ask him about his dog who rules his life! Here is a link to the schedule for the next couple of months.
  • Casino Promotions:
    • Today:
      • 3X points from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
      • Ladies Night 6 to 9 p.m.  First 150 ladies get Simply Tasteful Recipe Booklets and a Chi Tea Packet; Hot Seat winners get Simply Tasteful gift bags.
    • Thursday: $3 Craps starting at 5 p.m.
    • Friday and Saturday: Four-Wheeler Promotion Giveaways at 5, 7 & 9 p.m.
    • Monday:  Free 6-Pack of Pepsi or Diet Pepsi when earning 25 points (limit one).
 As always, some Interesting Information:
  • We are half way through the re-carpeting of all of the rooms in the Motor Lodge – another of the seemingly endless and ongoing projects to freshen up every inch of the Carson Valley Inn.
  • A few of us got a peak at some upcoming promotions (more next week) and we'll be giving away $75,000 in cash between the CVI and Bodines Casino during May and June.  We'll also be involved as the host hotel for the pilots and crew coming into town for the Collings Foundation's Wings of Freedom Tour on June 2 – 4 (hint – a chance to buy a ride in a B-17, B-52 or P-51).
  • Sous Chef Patrick Pierce's Game-On Fridays special in CV Steak this Friday is Grilled Thresher Shark with Shrimp and Roasted Corn Salsa for $26.00 As with all CV Steak entrees, the Game-On Friday special also includes tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato.
Lots More Coming Up: We have a lot more coming up at the Carson Valley Inn so check our Blog posting every Wednesday!

Free Anniversary Cake and Champagne: We celebrate the Carson Valley Inn's Anniversary under Mike Pegram's ownership every year in mid-April 'cause that's when the casino remodeling was done in 2010 – just a few short months after Mike took over. A lot has happened since then and we invite you to browse through the story  (see, we told you it was a lot)!  Anyway, the 4th Anniversary starts on Monday, April 14 with double points from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., free cake and champagne in the casino from 1 to 2 p.m. and again from 7 to 8 p.m., and free anniversary t-shirts distributed randomly throughout the day.  On Tuesday, INN Club members earn 5X points from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.  Other April casino promotions include Free Pepsi 6-Pack days, Double and Triple Points days and more. Masters Putting Contest in Poker Room: We know you're thinking "how do poker and The Masters even belong in the same sentence?" Guess it might make more sense if you knew that some of our Poker Room Staff are Grade A Golf Junkies and so are some of our poker players. So, for every one of the four Golf Majors we have a putting contest and . . . well, rather than explain, check the details on our Poker Room Page.

New Bar Picture at Last!: Another big dinner in the Valley Ballroom last Thursday and we snuck in with our smart phone to snap a picture or two of the new bar. In this week's blog: CV Steak days expand, catch us at this Friday's Carson Valley Job Fair,  Michael Martin Murphy Concert hotel package added, more on Mike's horses with a Derby hopeful running Saturday, this week's entertainment, Ladies' Night prizes and more!

CV Steak Game Special, Open More Nights:

As with all CV Steak entrees, the Game-On Friday special also includes tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato.
  • We told you in late December that we'd go back to 6-nights-a-week come spring. We'll, spring is here so back we go to Tuesday through Sunday nights in CV Steak! We're planning to go to 7-nights-a-week in the summer . . . and you can be sure we'll keep you posted in our weekly blog posting.
Mike's Horses – a 1st, a 2nd and a Saturday Run:
  • Two of Mike's horses ran at Santa Anita last Saturday. In the first race of the day, 3-year-old filly Lady Regina finished a solid 2nd in her first career start.  Secretsatmidnight won the 6th Race for 4-year-olds and up. Both horses were ridden by Martin Garcia who occasionally visits the Carson Valley Inn as Mike's guest.
  • We get questions as to why we don't include a blurb in this blog as to which horses will be running the coming weekend. Simplest answer: Decisions aren't usually finalized until after our blog is posted and, in horse racing, "things" change right up to post time. So, experience has taught us that in most cases it is best not to speculate! However . . .
  • . . . We are making an exception this week 'cause last we heard it looks like Kentucky Derby hopeful Hoppertunity may be running in this Saturday's Santa Anita Derby.

Join the 400 of us who are proud to work at the CVI!  Want to Be Part of the Heartbeat of the Carson Valley? Consider working at the Carson Valley Inn where it all happens! To find out more, visit us at the Carson  Valley Job Fair this Friday, April 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the CVIC Hall on Esmeralda Street in downtown Minden. Julie and Pat from our Human Resources Team will be there to help you get a feel for the culture of working at the Carson Valley Inn. You can check them out and they can get to know you. You might match up for one of our current openings or, who knows, with the peak employment season coming on, you'll already be "in the queue" as more openings become available.  Can't make it to the Job Fair this Friday? Check out our openings, benefits and other info on our Employment Page. Or, better yet, stop by our Human Resources office (please - not this Friday while we’re at the Job Fair) and let's chat in-person.  Come in the Hotel Entrance, turn left down the hallway and walk on in through the double doors. If Pat isn't right there to greet you, we'll find her or Julie pretty darn quickly!

Chris Young and Dustin Lynch Concerts Announced, New Name for Our Outdoor Events Center, More

In this week's blog: T. G. Sheppard Concert just about Sold Out, Chris Young and Dustin Lynch Concerts announced, our Outdoor Events Center gets a permanent name, new Valley Ballroom Bar completed, Michael Martin Murphy & Oak Ridge Boys concert tickets moving, how Mike's horse Midnight Hawk did last weekend, this week's entertainment, Ladies' Night prizes, more!

Outdoor Events Center Now TJ's Corral: Our new outdoor events center – previously and temporarily referred to as the Valley Sky Theatre – is now officially "TJ's Corral" in honor of Theodore James “T.J.”
Day.  T. J. was a prominent and successful Nevada businessman, community philanthropist, ranch operator, and locomotive and aviation enthusiast who passed away in January of 2014.  CVI owner Mike Pegram was a long-time friend of T.J.'s and admired the positive affects he had on education and many worthy causes in northern Nevada. After the loss of his friend, Mike decided to rename the new outdoor venue as a small tribute to a very important Nevadan.  Watch for the new TJ's Corral sign going up soon.

Concert Lineup Expands – Tickets for Some on Sale:
