$20,000 Giveaway This Weekend, Blood Drive, Entertainment News, More

$20,000 Guaranteed Cash and FreePlay This Weekend: Our $80,000 Cash and FreePlay promotion finale is this weekend and we are guaranteeing to give away $20,000 in Cash and FreePlay between the Carson Valley Inn (Friday night) and Bodines Casino (Saturday). Drawings are at 6 and 8 p.m. and there's still time to "get in" – check at the Guest Services counter at either casino. By now you know we don't let a month go by without some type of generous promotion and giveaway so here's a peek at what's on tap for September: we're giving away Two Free Harleys and $25,000 in Cash and Free Play and we'll have all the information in next Wednesday's blog!
Blood Drive Tuesday: For a number of reasons, we no longer have events in our West parking lot between the Carson Valley Inn and the Carson Valley Market. Two exceptions are the Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive (mark your calendar for Friday, December 11) and 3 or 4 blood drives each year put on by United Blood Services.  You may have noticed that these Blood Drives are often right before a holiday to ensure adequate supplies when vehicular traffic (and the likelihood of more accidents) is at its highest. So, before Labor Day Weekend arrives, the next Blood Drive is this coming Tuesday, September 1 from noon to 6 p.m. To make an appointment to give blood, call 800-696-4484 or visit www.bloodhero.com and enter the code N1HRH.

On the Outdoor Entertainment Front:
  • Austinpalooza Friday September 11: Sure we'll have four bands providing continuous live music from 5 to 10 PM:  Miki Rae (Indie Pop), The Engineered Disaster (Classic Rock), Seymour's Trick Bag (Rock) and Lavish Green (Ska/Reggae).  And yes, the bar will be open and we will have food to purchase. But all that aside, your attendance and donation (no tickets will be sold, no coercion) will help support Austin's House which provides emergency shelter and compassionate care for children between the ages of birth to 18 who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. The Austin's House website has more information on their mission. Please join us to help keep this incredible community service going strong!
  • Lee Brice Friday, September 18: Watch this as we connect Lee Brice and football – a fitting
combination since he will be here on the Friday immediately following the first week of regular-season NFL play: The Madden NFL 16 video game soundtrack features more than 30 tracks including Lee Brice's "Sirens."  Didn't think we could do it, did you? Anyway, the Jagermeister Presents Lee Brice concert in TJ's Corral on Friday, September 18 will not interfere with any NFL football games, any Nevada Wolfpack football game, nor any Douglas Tiger home game. So, get your tickets now for Lee's Party Pit (standing – stage center), Reserved Seating or General Admission (standing). Get tickets through our website, at our Hotel Desk or by calling 775-783-6606.
  • Final 2015 Community Concert This Friday: The Carson Valley Inn is proud to join with the Town of Minden as major sponsors of the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department 2015 GE Family Concert Series. The final concert is this Friday in Minden Park starting at 6 PM featuring country artist Shane Dwight. Our thanks to all of the other sponsors who make this free concert series possible every year. Small town America at its finest!
A Wrap-Up from Last Week
  • The Carson Valley Aviation Roundup was an incredible success as measured by attendance
Thunderbirds 1-6 Over Lake Tahoe Last Sunday
and reaction from those at the show and throughout the community.  We thought about posting a few pictures taken from or near the air show, but it would be impossible to choose from the thousands of pictures we've seen on Facebook and on various websites. If you want a brief glimpse, our friends at the Carson Valley Times assembled a variety of  images here and the folks at The Record Courier did the same here.  The picture shown is one that the Thunderbird team took on their way back to Nellis Air Force Base on Sunday. Despite some still slightly smoky skies, it's a rare view of six aircraft from the greatest Air Force in the world: Thunderbirds 1 – 6 flying over the south shore core of beautiful Lake Tahoe! Thanks to the many fellow sponsors, volunteers, clubs and especially the incredible Minden-Tahoe Airport staff for making this event possible!
Cabaret Lounge Entertainment – No Cover, No Minimum – Free! Steve Lord performs tonight, The Markleevillians are here tomorrow night, our own Stew "The Turtle" Stewart and his band entertain Friday and Saturday nights and Jonathon "JB" Barton returns Sunday through Wednesday.  A man of a thousand songs, Steve Lord brings a varied mix of oldies, country, pop, blues, jazz, soul and rock 'n' roll. The Markleevillians present an evening of rock and blues starting with the mellow and spooling up as the night goes on. Stew Stewart is always a crowd favorite with his spontaneity, wit and ability to connect to the audience. A Stew Stewart show has something for everyone . . . country music, blues, oldies, comedy, classic rock, Motown and just plain ol' on-the-spot fun!  Jonathan Barton's love for a variety of musical styles is apparent in his selection of favorites from Van Morrison, CCR, Hank Williams, Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, Eagles and many more.

Aviation Roundup News, Wine Walk, Golf, Austinpalooza, More

The weather will be ideal, the plans are all set, and the Carson Valley skies will ignite with excitement this weekend so don't miss out. Here are a few helpful tidbits:
  • Tickets are less expensive in advance and you can get them on the Aviation Roundup website
    F-18 Super Hornet
where you'll also find answers to many questions about the show.
  • If we read the FAA jargon correctly, you might catch a glimpse of one or more of the U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds jets flying over the Valley during the next few days in advance of the Aviation Roundup this Saturday and Sunday.
    • Wednesday: The #8 Thunderbird will be doing some brief survey flights over the airport about 1 PM.
    • Thursday: Thunderbirds #1-7 will be doing survey work over the show center line about 1 PM.
    • Friday: Thunderbirds #1-6 will be in the area shortly after 1:30 PM practicing maneuvers for Saturday and Sunday's air show.
  • The official pilot briefing for all of the performers will take place at the Carson Valley Inn on Friday through Sunday mornings of this weekend. KTVN Channel 2 meteorologists will be doing the weather briefing portion of this meeting: Mike Alger on Friday, Chloe Beardsley Saturday and Jeff Martinez Sunday.
  • In case you missed the announcement last week, yet another act has been added to the already packed schedule: the U.S. Navy Tac Demo Team is bringing in two F-18 Super Hornets and demonstrating one on each day of the Aviation Roundup.
  • This weekend's Carson Valley performance by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds is one of 40 shows they are doing in 2015 and one of only four shows on the West Coast.
  • For more tidbits mildly related to the Aviation Roundup see the TJ's Corral and Because We Feel like Mentioning It sections below.
Thursday Third Thursday Wine Walk Goes Timeless: "Pick Your Decade" is the theme for this week's Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk in Gardnerville. Sharkey's Casino is a central stop for wine walk regulars and what better location to match the theme than this historic landmark which opened as Sharkey's in the early 1970s. Check the memorabilia and pictures on the walls and we're sure you'll find something for each of the decades since the 70s. Want to go back to the 60s? Check out the mural of the old Golden Bubble in the Jackpot Café. Want to go back even further? Sharkey's has antique slots from the 20s and 30s! Be sure to register for the Wine Walk starting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at either Big Daddy's Bicycle Shop near the Minden-Gardnerville line or at the Town of Gardnerville office across the street and two blocks south of Sharkey's. Come dressed in whatever attire matches your favorite decade – including what you have on today – and stop by the Jackpot Café before or after the wine walk for Thursday's $7.99 Beef Stroganoff  Special!

Coming Up in TJs Corral:
  • Private Event this Friday: If you see activity out in TJ's Corral this Friday night, don't worry, you didn't miss a concert. It's a private Performers and Sponsors Party for the Aviation Roundup. Just one of the many ways the Carson Valley Inn is stepping up to help make this incredible community event possible.
  • Austinpalooza Friday, September 11: After a tweak or two to the schedule these four bands are confirmed for a continuous stream of live music from 5 to 10 PM:  Miki Rae (Indie Pop), The Engineered Disaster (Classic Rock), Seymour's Trick Bag (Rock) and Lavish Green (Ska/Reggae). There is no admission charge for this nonstop evening of live music presented by GE and the Carson Valley Inn, but the folks from Austin's House will gladly accept your donation at the door or during the concert.
  • Lee Brice Friday, September 18: our final concert  is four weeks away and tickets continue to move rapidly. Please don't delay as we don't want you to miss out on catching our 2015 TJ's Corral finale from Lee's Party Pit (standing – stage center), Reserved Seating or General Admission (standing). Get tickets through our website, at our Hotel Desk or by calling 775-783-6606.
An Educated Golfer is Just As Frustrated! Our Group Golf Business picks up when school starts and that's what’s going on now as students reluctantly flock back to school in Nevada and California and parents try to figure out when "things" changed so that school starts long before Labor Day (anyone really know how this happened??). The thelittlestgolfer.com  saying sure illustrates the meticulous nature of teachers, the importance of spelling and the frustration of golf. If you are part of a group of golfers that might be interested in one of our group golf packages, call Greg at 775-783-6615.

And on the Gaming Front:
  • $80,000 Guaranteed Giveaway Promotion:
We're in the home stretch but you still have one more Friday and Saturday (this weekend) to gather some of the $80,000 Guaranteed Cash and FreePlay and garnish more tickets for the final night drawings.  Check this page for more on this and our other current casino promotions.
  • Climbing the Ladder in the Poker Room: the August and September ladder promotion is well underway with the top 60 rankings being updated and posted a couple of times a week. Players tend to move up and down quickly based on points earned and additional points gained on wheel spins.  More information on the ladder promotion and all of our other poker promotions and special games is available at this link
As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Even Useful Tidbits and News
  • Mike's Horses: Decent results at Del Mar last week as Pretty N Cool won the Sorrento Stakes on Wednesday and Carson City Five won the first race on Saturday. Still not a sport for the faint of heart as these are just two successes among a number of "out-of-the-money" finishes in the last few weeks including a couple of "hey, how come no one finished behind me" outcomes.
  • Wednesday Ladies' Night 5:30 to 8:30 PM: The first 150 ladies to sign up tonight receive a free gift and coupon for tonight's ladies-only drink special.  There are also ladies-only raffles and hot seat drawings for Yankee Candle Baskets.
  • Game Special Friday, Prime Rib Saturday, King Crab Sunday in CV Steak:  Our Friday Game Special this week is Chef's Choice, Saturday's special is Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sundays the special is one pound of King Crab Legs for $32. These specials are all served with fresh vegetable, choice of potato (au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked) and tableside tossed salad.
  • Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge: George Pickard performs tonight, The Nighthawks entertain Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and Steve Lord returns Sunday through Wednesday.
  • Race and Sports Book: You can watch and bet Horseracing, Major League Baseball games, Pre-Season NFL Football and this Saturday's NASCAR Irwin Tools Night Race. We're also taking futures bets to win most professional and collegiate championships.
  • Because We Feel Like Mentioning It:  Today is Aviation Day which is most ironic because it is also the first day we'll see visible activity in the sky connected with this weekend's Aviation Roundup. Continuing with coincidences, Sunday - the last day of the Aviation Roundup - is Ride the Wind Day created to marvel at all things flying.

$99,000 Winner, CVI Birthday Party Saturday, Much More

CVI 31st Birthday This Saturday, August 15:
31 years ago in the summer of 1984 the "Footloose" soundtrack was big, and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," Duran Duran's "The Reflex" and "When Doves Cry" by the artist formerly known as Prince were the top hits. A then just-turned-20 Courteney Cox danced onstage with Bruce Springsteen in the video for "Dancing In the Dark" (starts at about 3:20 in the above video) and Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It" was poised to take over the # 1 spot on the charts. "Ghostbusters" was riding high in the theatres after wrestling away the spotlight from "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." The XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles had us glued to our TVs as gymnast Mary Lou Retton captured our hearts. And during all of this, the Carson Valley Inn opened!! So much for our little trip down memory lane. Here's what's in store as we celebrate our 31st Birthday this Saturday:
In the Casino:
·         Free Cake and Champagne from 2 to 3 p.m.
·         Free Birthday T-shirts distributed at random times throughout the day while they last.
·         Triple Points from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
·         Drawings for up to $5,000 at 2, 4, 6 and 8 p.m.
In TJ's Corral:
·         Before the Concert from 6 to 7:30 p.m. we'll be serving free popcorn and free ice cream, $1.50 hot dogs, $2.00 hamburgers, $2.00 water and sodas and $5 draft beer.
·         The Davisson Brothers Band cranks it up at 7:30 p.m. and will keep it rockin' until about 10 p.m. Many of you who saw them in TJ's Corral back in June asked us to bring them back . . . so we did and this time it's free!

And the $99,000 Goes to . . . . Our Penny Progressive Jackpot finally "hit" on Monday night and the $99,000 went to a very happy Bob Hail pictured with his friend Janette. Bob is a CVI regular who usually plays the dollar video poker machines. He's been dabbling a little with the Penny Progressive since the jackpot got up so high, but then so have a lot of people! Anyway, on Monday night he and Janette stopped in for a bite to eat and she suggested they play the penny slots. Bob started getting bored, asked her to finish out the money he had in the machine, and she talked him into playing it out himself.  Just another chapter in the constantly-being-written book, "Behind Every Successful Man Is a Woman!"

But Wait, There's More . . . . Just as were were wrapping up this blog on Tuesday afternoon the bells and whistles started going off along the wall to the right as you walk in our main casino entrance. Seems the "Grand" Jackpot on the bank of 88 Fortune machines decided to make one of our players feel most fortunate to the tune of a $19,252.00 Jackpot!!

And Even More . . .  Player club members have been whittling away at the $80,000 Guaranteed Cash and FreePlay pool, but going into this weekend's drawings over half of this total is still up for grabs through the end of the month and we encourage you to get in on the winnings. You earn a drawing ticket for every five points you accumulate using your player card and drawings are every Friday and Saturday at 5, 7 and 9 p.m. Check this page for more on this and other current casino promotions.

Coming Up in TJs Corral:
  • Austinpalooza: Be sure this one is on your calendar for Friday evening, September 11 from 5 to 10 PM. We have four local bands performing including Miki Rae, The Engineered Disaster (TED), Seymour's Trick Bag and Lavish Green. There is no admission charge, but the folks from Austin's House will gladly accept your donation at the door or during the concert.
  • Lee Brice: Tickets went on sale last week for the September 18 “Jägermeister Presents: Lee Brice” concert and they are selling quite briskly. Above is Lee's "I Don't Dance" video . . . you can catch this and all of his other hits in TJ's Corral from Lee's Party Pit (standing – stage center), Reserved Seating or General Admission (standing) . . .  but don't wait too long 'cause this one is sure to be a sell-out! Buy tickets through our website, at our Hotel Desk or by calling 775-783-6606.
Aviation Roundup "Turning Final": A week from today the first Thunderbird jet will zoom overhead and the brief survey flights on Wednesday and Thursday will give way to a rehearsal on Friday and the full Carson Valley Aviation Roundup air show on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23 at the Minden-Tahoe Airport.  Tickets are on sale at aviationroundup.com where you'll also find answers to common questions about the air show and information on all of the civilian acts that will precede the spectacular 45+ minute performance by the USAF Thunderbirds!

As of yesterday, the Forty Niners were at 15 to 1 and the Raiders were 40 to 1.
  • Flowery Branch, De Pere and Berea: What are these names . . . audible plays called in a football game (picture Peyton Manning yelling "Omaha, Omaha!). Not quite . . . they are all actual towns in which NFL teams hold their pre-season training. Find out more  about these towns and others in this interesting article on 10 Quirky Facts About NFL Preseason Towns.
  • Blackjack Tournament Winners: Our monthly Blackjack Tournament last night paid a prize pool of $1475. Richard Leigh took the top prize of $740, Inga Silver finished second for $445 and Gary Griffith won the "show" money of $290. Next tournament is Tuesday, September 8.
  • Because We Feel Like Mentioning It:  Sunday is Airbourne Day created to pay tribute to the courage and dedication of airborne members of the Armed Forces. We thought this would be a perfect segue into reminding our readers that 6 days later, the Misty Blues all-women sky diving team will kick off the Aviation Roundup by circling the American Flag as they descent into Minden-Tahoe Airport to the singing of the Star Spangled Banner!

This time it's a free concert - part of our 31st Birthday Party on Saturday, August 15. Counting Down the Days to Aviation Roundup! Just two weeks until the local skies are roaring with the sights, sounds and excitement of the Carson Valley Aviation Roundup on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23 at the Minden-Tahoe Airport.  Tickets are on sale at aviationroundup.com where you'll also find much more information.  Don't miss this rare opportunity to see the USAF Thunderbirds and a half dozen other aerobatic acts including Team Rocket whose spectacular 5-minute 2013 highlights video is above (the rock & roll starts at about :40). Also on tap: over 40 vendors/exhibitors and almost two dozen static displays.

Just Put Ice on It! Now that we are in the dog days of the summer season, it's time to start thinking about how to cool down on these hot days. In our opinion, there's nothing that surges through you (including your brain sometimes) faster than a frozen smoothie at Job's Perk (located near the elevators on the hotel first floor). We mix 'em "to order" and offer seven flavors: banana, strawberry, raspberry, peach, piña colada, cappuccino and mango. How much, just $2.49 (yes, you read that correctly)! And which is the most popular? It's the combo mixture of banana and strawberry!

Golf for All Levels:
  • The annual Carson Valley Inn Mixed Scramble is just six weeks away on
the weekend after Labor Day and now is the time to "sign up!"  We get close to the old childhood "choosing up sides" with a blind draw for teams at the reception on Friday night. The Saturday Scramble is at the Genoa Lakes Ranch Course and prizes are awarded at a banquet dinner Saturday night. This is a great event for golfers of all levels to compete in a fun way - all the details are on this page which also includes a link to the flyer/registration form.
  • Speaking of golf, the Carson Valley Inn is headquarters to over 100 different golf groups each year from as few as eight people to over 100. We make it easy by packaging the hotel rooms, golf starting times, food and beverage functions and even activities for the non-golfers. Are you part of a group you feel might be interested? Give Greg a call at 775-783-6615.
First NFL Preseason Game This Weekend! It's not a full card (that's next weekend), but the first official NFL preseason game is this Sunday when the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings meet in the Hall of Fame game at Canton, Ohio. We'll be glad to take your bet on this game at the Sports Book at the Carson Valley Inn, Bodines Casino, or Sharkey's Casino . . . and when you place your bet, please share whatever logic you used to pick a winner when the  teams have only been in training camp a little more than a week! If you're a true football junkie, you might appreciate these 10 Reasonably Fun Facts About the NFL's 2015 Preseason Schedule.

Hot August Nights Classic Cars in Town Thursday: Over 500 classic automobiles will pass through Esmeralda Street and Minden Park this Thursday from 10 AM to 2 PM as the Hot August Nights Poker Run makes its annual lunch stop in the Carson Valley. Thanks to the generous support of the Carson Valley Visitors Authority and the Town of Minden, we all get the visual treat just three blocks from the Carson Valley Inn without having to fight the crowds in Reno. There will be food and beverages for sale and upbeat oldies music by Bill McClain . . . so stop by and enjoy!

As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Even Useful Tidbits and News
  • New Items in Katie's: We've added some new items to the menu in Katie's this week including a Crisp Calamari Salad, a Spinach Salad, a Beef Brisket Sandwich, a Benedict Omelette, and two burgers: the Blackjack and the Big Island. Come on in and give 'em a try!

  • Mike's Horses: Gimme Da Lute won the $200,000 Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar last Sunday . . . the 8th race of 2015 for the colt who has won 5 times, placed once and came in third twice! Remember Hoppertunity, Mike's horse that was scratched 3 days before the 2014 Kentucky Derby? Here's an interesting story about the colt, his trainer and the folks who inspired his name as it appeared in the New Your Times earlier this week.
  • Buffalo Shirt Ribs Friday, King Crab Sunday in CV Steak:  Our Friday Game Special this week is Braised Buffalo Short Ribs served with fresh vegetable, choice of potato (au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked) and tableside tossed salad all for $29.00. • Race and Sports Book: You can watch and bet Horseracing, Major League Baseball games, golf's PGA Championship and this weekend's "Cheez-it 355 at the Glen" NASCAR race. We're also taking futures bets to win most professional and collegiate championships.  As a side note, we're starting to wonder if the people who name NASCAR races and the people who name racehorses are starting to hang out together?
  • Because We Feel Like Mentioning It:  Every day of the year there are up to a half dozen different "days of recognition" for one thing or another. We try to pick out one or two each week and sometimes making the choice is difficult. This week was a no-brainer as Friday, August 7 is both International Beer Day and India Pale Ale Day. And no matter how many of our readers decide to join us for this celebration, we can handle all of you between our six locations: The Cabaret Bar and CV Steak Bar at the Carson Valley Inn, the Casino Bar and Sports Book Bar at Bodines Casino, and the Silver Dollar Bar at Sharkey's Casino!
