Nevada Coach at CVI, Incredible Soaring Video, Mother's Day Dining, Hockey and TJ's, More

Wolf Pack Football Coach Here Tuesday,
Come Meet Him!
The Nevada football team finished strong last year winning two of their last three games. So, what will the 2018 season bring? Who are the strong recruits or returning players expected to make a difference? What about the new coaches and what they bring to the table? What’s the outlook for senior quarterback Ty Gangi and the two hot sophomore receivers in the Spring Game, Elijah Cooks and McLane Mannix? What did coach Norvell glean from the 2017 season that he hopes will pay dividends for this year?  Get the answers to these questions and any other questions you’d like to ask when The Wolf Pack Caravan with Coach Norvell comes to the Carson Valley Inn on Tuesday evening, May 15.   Admission is free and light refreshments will be served starting at 5:30 PM with the program scheduled from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. If you plan to attend, please give Holly a heads up at 775-682-6961. If you decide to drop in on the “day of,” feel free to do so!

A Hockey Rink Would Fit Inside TJ’s Corral,
So What?
Hockey fans already know this story and sports fans who don’t usually follow hockey are starting to take note: the Vegas Golden Knights, an NHL first-year expansion team that didn’t exist last season, won the NHL Pacific Division, has handily made it past the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs and they’re going on to the Western Conference Championship Round. With more Nevada eyes now on hockey, we’ll take this opportunity to give you an idea of how close to the action you are at a concert in TJ’s Corral.

A hockey rink will just fit inside the audience area of TJ’s Corral. If you’re sitting on the scorekeepers bench at center ice, the distance you see straight across to the other side of the rink is about the distance from the front of the stage to the back of the audience area on the raised grass. The “nosebleed seats” in TJ’s Corral (we really don’t have such a thing, but we are talking about hockey so it seemed appropriate) would be from the scorekeepers bench (front of the stage in TJ’s) to the far corners (Boards) of the hockey rink (standing in the grass area as far from the stage as possible). If you’ve ever sat or stood center ice against the glass at a hockey rink, you know that’s pretty darn close.

Now that we’ve established there really isn’t a bad seat in the house, here’s a reminder of what’s coming up: The Righteous Brothers: Bill Medley & Bucky Heard kick off the concert season on  Friday, May 25 with their romantic sounds that defined the sixties and seventies and have continued to stand the test of time. Country is the theme for the following three concerts with Travis Tritt on Friday, June 1; Granger Smith Featuring Earl Dibbles Jr. on Saturday, June 16; and Clint Black on Friday, June 29. We then switch to rock with Ted Nugent on Wednesday, July 4; back to country when Trace Adkins visits on Saturday, July 14; and wrap it up with more classic rock with Creedence Clearwater Revisited on Sunday, August 12.

Your best and fastest bet for purchasing tickets for any TJ’s Corral concert is through our website which allows you to see the seating layout map and pick your seat(s) for one or more concerts in one transaction. You can also purchase tickets in person at our Hotel Desk. Back to the Vegas Golden Knights and another tie to TJ’s Corral: the team has already sold out its season tickets for the 2018/2019 season. The analogy? A couple of our concerts just have a few tickets left so please consider this a friendly nudge!

Mother’s Day is Sunday
We Still Have Room for You!
So many times we get down to a few days before a holiday and we are pretty much “sold out” of available reservations for dinner. However, with the addition of so much more capacity due to our Champagne Brunch, we still have room for you for Mother’s Day this Sunday. Please join us at our Champagne Brunch in the Valley Ballroom from 10 AM to 2 PM (call 775-783-7768 for Brunch reservations) or Mother’s Day Specials plus the regular dinner menu in CV Steak (call 775-783-6650 for CV Steak reservations.) In Katie’s we’re serving the regular menu plus a Seafood Omelet from 7 to 11 AM and Grilled Salmon Oscar from 11 AM until 9 PM.

Soaring Above the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe
Soaring or gliding . . . call it what you may, but definitely put it on your bucket list and be sure to make it happen here in Carson Valley. Soaring NV at Minden-Tahoe Airport (5 minutes from CVI) offers a variety of soaring experiences with spectacular views of the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. Many Carson Valley Inn hotel guests have come back marveling about the visual sensation. The 360° video above gives you an idea   . . .  but sitting in the front seat and being able to see over a hundred miles in any direction in almost complete silence is something you just have to experience!

Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker
Actually, we’re up to snuff on the butcher, baker and candlestick maker openings here at the CVI. However, we are looking for cooks, a banquet steward, coffee bar attendant, front desk clerk, marketing coordinator and a few other positions. See all the openings at this link and consider applying for one of these positions. We can honestly tell you there’s never a dull day at the Carson Valley Inn! Oh, and as long as we're being honest, we do not, nor never did we, employ a candlestick maker . . . even back when candles were allowed on the tables in CV Steak and at banquets!

Stay Up All Night, Eat What You Want!
Are we really suggesting that you abandon all restraint? Only marginally, read on.
  • Today is Third Shift Worker’s Day and we salute the CVI employees who stay up all night keeping the Carson Valley Inn open for those of you who wander in during the wee hours of the night. Thanks also to the law enforcement, fire department, paramedics, doctors, and others who work graveyard shift and are there for us when we need them!
  • Ironically, Thursday is Stay Up All Night Day. We suppose this is no cause for celebration for those who work the third shift and we applaud whoever came up with this day for their highly complex recommendation as to how to best celebrate the occasion . . . And this straight from the page at the link above: “The best way to celebrate this night is to stay up all night.” Whew - we never would’ve figured that out on our own!
  • Friday is Eat What You Want Day and our only guess is that this “special day” was instituted for those who simply want to continue the overindulgence of last Sunday’s No Diet Day.
  • Sunday is Top Gun Day which we only mentioned because it reminds us how absolutely incredible it was to have Kenny Loggins perform Danger Zone in TJ’s Corral last summer!
  • Tuesday is Chocolate Chip Day. This one’s a no-brainer: go directly to Job’s Perk or the Katie’s Bakery Counter, buy one or more chocolate chip cookies, consume immediately or at your pleasure!

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Chris Twomey tonight, Jo Mama Thursday through Saturday, Carolyn Dolan and Big Red Sunday and Monday and Roem Baur Tuesday thru Thursday. Chris Twomey’s roots are deep into a genre of folk-rock . . . from 2Me to The Diva Kings to Dad's LPs to whatever is next.  Jo Mama conveys the same high energy whether they are playing funk, Latin, blues, swing, rock, country or calypso.  The group features Paul Covarelli on guitar and vocals, drummer Bill Heise lays down the back beat, Rocky Taterelli horns in on smokin' sax and Nancy Barker rounds it out on keyboards and vocals.  Carolyn Dolan can dive into powerful R & B, deliver a smooth jazz standard or a gentle country ballad.  Roem Baur is a multiple award-winning touring songwriter and classically trained opera singer who ultimately answered the call of rock n' roll.

Ten September Activities, Community Events at the CVI, Bakery Topples Blog Writers, Much More

Sunset at the Charlie Daniels Band Concert Courtesy of Brian Aspenleiter
A September Top Ten! September is the ideal time to stay at the CVI and enjoy our area's recreation and adventure. Here are just a few of our suggestions:
Our Community Comes Together at the CVI! Our Valley Ballroom is in the spotlight this fall with many of our community's most prestigious organizations holding annual events. As always, one of the benefits of holding these events at the Carson Valley Inn is the assistance we often lend in getting the word out (space available, of course). Some of the upcoming events (all numbers are area code 775): Sierra Nevada Republican Women 911 Dinner on Friday Sep. 12, an official NV Sesquicentennial event (Nancy, 267-6937), Friends of the NRA Dinner on Sat., Sep., 13 (Blayne, 450-2349), Douglas County Republican Women Dinner & Fashion Show on Sat., Sep. 27 (Janet, 267-2991),  Business Council of Douglas County Critical Issues Conference on Thu., Sep. 25 (Renea, 782-6715), Bunko for Breast Cancer on Sat. Oct. 11 (Pamela, 215-1027),  D.A.W.G. Celebrity DAWG Pound Dinner & Comedy Show on Sat., Oct. 18 (Allison, 267-7325) and A Touch of Class Show on Oct. 23 – 25 (Sue, 265-1097).  To book your next event, convention, reception, meeting or reunion at the CVI, call Carrie at 775-783-6673.

Please Don't Forget these Two Events Coming This Month:
Garrett Felling at Nevada
Boxing Hall of Fame
Induction Last Month
  • The Collegiate and Amateur Boxing in TJ's Corral on September 13 presents a great opportunity to see some National Collegiate Boxing Association Champions in action including Nevada boxer Garrett Felling who won the NCBA boxing title last spring at 185 pounds and Jacob Berggren who captured the NCBA 139-pound championship title over Nevada's JJ Mariano. You'll also get a chance to meet the Nevada Boxing coaches and many Nevada Boxing alumni, a caring brotherhood of now successful businessmen who continue to keep the sport alive and well. Tickets are just $10 and are available online.
  • Nevada Coach Brian Polian's Visit is less than three weeks away so plan now to attend his Nevada Wolf Pack Blitz buffet lunch here at the CVI on Monday, September 22. The cost is $17 per person and advance reservations are a must through the University of Nevada Athletic Department. Please call 775-682-6901 by Friday, September 19.
CVI Bakers 2, CVI Blog Writers 0:
  • They Threw a Cupcake at Me! Last week we mentioned a great deal for September: 50% off
when paying with points in Katie's on Tuesday's from 2 – 10 p.m. We also mentioned that on Mondays in September, when you earn 125 points that day, you can just swing by the casino kiosk and swipe your card for a Free Omelet  or Free $6.99 Platter that same day. About an hour after last week's blog went live, a couple of the bakers showed up in the Blog Office and pelted us with cupcakes. Good thing for us the cupcakes are always fresh and thus the damage was more embarrassment than the "ouch" which would come from a stale cupcake. The reason for the onslaught? We forgot to mention that every Monday in September all bakery items at the Katie's counter are 50% off when paying with points!
  • And Then They Attacked Our Waistlines!  A day later, a frequent CVI Guest Reggie Gold asked an innocent question on our Facebook Page inquiring about what flavor of pies we would have that weekend. Foolishly, one of us went down to the bakery to ask. A half hour later we had been sweet-talked into tasting all of the weekend's offerings and the result?? Not even a dent could be made with 50 minutes on the treadmill that night!
  • Bottom Line: Our bakery operates seven days a week making the cakes, pies, cupcakes, cookies, brownies and other goodies served in our restaurants and sold at the bakery display at the entrance to Katie's. Order is advance for birthdays, anniversaries, office or home open houses or receptions, holidays, or any special occasion. The heavy volume of sales assures freshness and, as we found out, if you try to eat a whole room full of this stuff (way past the "moderation" level) by yourself, it will require a few extra minutes on the treadmill . . .but it's worth it!!
As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Occasionally Even Useful Tidbits and News:
  • NFL Football Starts This Weekend and we're all set with Parlay Cards, our Progressive Pro Pick'em where you pick the NFL games without a point spread, beer specials during all NFL Games including Bud & Bud Light draft beer for just $2 and $1 off all other Anheuser-Busch draft beers, Monday Night Football drawings and more!
  • We are in touch weekly with the folks at Amador Stage Lines as they work out the details for Scheduled Bus Service between Reno Airport and Carson Valley. Their web site should be coming soon with rates, schedules and a more definitive starting date.
  • Free Entertainment in the Cabaret: Jonathan "JB" Barton appears tonight, Steppen Stonz entertains Thursday – Saturday, NFL Football fills the Cabaret Sunday and Monday nights and  Dale Poune takes the stage Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • This Week's Game-On Fridays special in CV Steak is Grilled Game Brochette with marinated Buffalo and Antelope, Venison and Alligator Sausage finished with a red wine demi and served with tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato . . . all for $28.00!
  • Ladies' Night –Tonight! Each of tonight's Hot Seat winners will receive a Gift Basket from
The Blue Cow - a relatively new Gourmet Food Shop in The Record Courier center offering custom gift baskets and a wide array of food goodies and gifts for every foodie and cheese lover in your life. Oh, and the first 150 ladies to check in tonight will receive a lucky stone paperweight. If you are a local merchant interested in getting involved in our Ladies' Night promotion, please contact Stephanie at 775-783-7711. We are always looking for a few hot seat prizes and 150 of something – every week!
  • Speaking of Gift Baskets: We saw the list of some of the Gift Baskets that will be auction prizes at the Bunko for Breast Cancer event in our Valley Ballroom on Saturday, October 11.Those dedicated ladies at GE are VERY creative!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You . . .
. . . for making the Charlie Daniels Band Concert a sell out and an overwhelming success.  At the top of today's blog is just one of the hundreds of stunning photos taken that night as the sun set in spectacular fashion over the Sierra Range. Thanks to Brian Aspenleiter of Minden Grill Company for sending us this one!
. . . for supporting the recent Austinpalooza which raised $7,435 for Austin's House. Left to right in the picture: Derek McReavy, Julie Keller and Chad Cox (all GE); Conrad Buedel, Austin's House; Bill Henderson and Stew Stewart (Carson Valley Inn).

Football Returns, Chris Young Video, Half Off Tuesdays, Another Throw Back Thirty Picture

Football Season is Here!  Yesterday the season's first Parlay Card came out at the
Sports Book and it's all College this week with 41 games from which to choose. Starting next Thursday, the NFL returns and we're ready with:
  • Our Progressive Pro Pick'em offers a special $5 parlay card each week with all the NFL games and you pick winners without a point spread. Pick 'em all and win a minimum of $2,500 (ties split)!
  • During all NFL Games, Bud & Bud Light draft beer is just $2 and all other Anheuser-Busch draft beers are $1 off.
  • Monday Night Football drawings are held for items such as NFL hats, CVI shirts, Budweiser merchandise and other prizes.
  • Also every Monday: two guests will be drawn to qualify for the Super Bowl Ultimate Tail Gate Package including two tickets to any Raider's home game in 2015, a BBQ grill, a $100 meat gift certificate to Costco, a Bud Light Easy-Up canopy, a couple of cases of Bud beer and assorted Bud Light T-shirts, hats and promotional items.

When Aw Naw is Ah Yes! Whether you were there or not, this video of the Chris Young concert really gives the feel for what it's like attending a young country artist's concert at TJ's Corral! Thanks to all who made this concert a sell-out!  And thanks also for making this Friday's Charlie Daniels Band Concert another sell-out 'cause Minden's Gonna Do It Again with this Long Haired Country Boy!

More on Coach Polian's Visit: We now have more details on Nevada Wolf Pack Coach Brian Polian's visit to the Carson Valley Inn for a Blitz buffet lunch on Monday, September 22. The doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon. Coach's candor, insight and humor was quite entertaining last year and we encourage all football enthusiasts to enjoy his presentation and jump in with questions. The cost is $17 per person and advance reservations are a must through the University of Nevada Athletic Department. Please call 775-682-6901 by Friday, September 19.

More Throwback Thirty: So we cheated a little last week with the picture of the CVI from a little less than 30 years ago. We'll go the other way this time and use a picture (above) from late 1983 shortly after groundbreaking. Using the Comments section below, can you tell us the approximate vantage point from which this picture was taken? Do you know what ever became of the structures on the left behind the construction equipment? And how about the small light green house in the background center . . . does anyone remember what two incidents happened the week before it met its demise?

Ya Just Had to Be There! Like the Flying Elvi, Giant Sand Castle and Splash Dogs that helped us celebrate our Birthday in recent Augusts past, the LivFast crew featuring X-Games Gold Medalist Lance Courey didn't disappoint last Sunday. Many aerial jumps, stunts, oohs and aahas plus over a dozen birthday cakes, cases of champagne, a thousand free anniversary tee shirts, the Blues Monsters, piles of free popcorn (wind + popcorn = mess), hundreds of free ice cream sandwiches, families and a zillion kids enjoying it all – what a day and night!

Run That By Me Again!? Our September casino promotions start next week, but here's a peak ahead. We'll start with the part that has even the Blog Department amazed. Inn Club members earn 5X Points on Saturdays and then get 50% off when paying with points in Katie's on Tuesday's from 2 to10 p.m. We're confident our Casino Marketing and Accounting folks checked in advance to make sure this makes financial sense, but it sounds to us writers as if this is a "don't miss" opportunity to dine in Katie's on Tuesdays for "pennies on the dollar!" Add in that CVI points have 5 times the value of the place just down the street (yep, we checked it out ourselves on the video reels and that's the majority of our slot play) and the multiplier effect becomes so high we can't even see it! Here's another one that has us non-numbers-types scratching our heads: On Mondays in September, when you earn 125 points that day, you just swing by the casino kiosk and swipe your card for a Free Omelet or Free $6.99 Platter (we have 6 of 'em on the menu) that same day. Plus, you keep the 125 points!

As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Occasionally Even Useful Tidbits and News:
  • A reminder that the '65 Mustang Coup will be given away this Saturday at Bodines Casino. The drawings are at 5 & 7 p.m.
  • Free Entertainment in the Cabaret: Greg Austin appears tonight, Stew Stewart entertains Thursday – Sunday and Jonathan "JB" Barton takes the stage Monday thru Wednesday.
  • This Week's Game-On Fridays special in CV Steak is Mesquite Smoked Buffalo Prime Rib, a 10 oz. carving of American Bison Prime Rib, seasoned with a rock salt mixture of herbs, cold smoked and slow roasted to retain juices. Served with creamed horseradish, tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato . . . all for $32.00!
  • Ladies' Night Gifts & Prizes: Each of tonight's Hot Seat winners will receive a Gift Basket from World Market . . . and the first 150 ladies will receive clip-on book lights. Next Wednesday night there will be more stuff from The Blue Cow (Blue Cow? We'll explain next Wednesday).
  • Coming next Wednesday's blog: A September Top Ten Recreational & Adventure Activities in our area and an update on the scheduled bus service between Carson Valley and Reno Airport.
Get In Touch With Us: Use the comments section below, shoot us an email or just pick up the phone and call us @ 775-782-9711. Hit "0" when the automated voice comes on and you'll go right to the hotel operator who can get you to the correct person or department. Charlie Almost Sold Out, How to Make Coquille St. Jacques, Soaring, Tom Petty Tribute in Cabaret, More

Dining Show & Sam Shad: We managed to snag the Carson Valley Inn segment of The Dining Show that was recorded here last week. There are plenty of mouth-watering food shots, a short "tutorial" on how CV Steak Sous Chef Patrick Pierce makes the Coquille St. Jacques, another non-scene-hogging performance by our own Joey Whitacre and – well, somehow "they" rewound time and put Sam Shad on stage with the Oak Ridge Boys in TJ's Corral! The show will start airing fairly soon on KRNV (CH. 4) every other Friday at 12.30 pm and on Charter Cable (Ch. 190) in northern Nevada over 20 times a week.

Best Soaring in the West Takes Off Just 8 Minutes from CVI!
Many of our readers know that the Carson Valley area is one of the very best soaring locations in the US and even in the world. We've seen visitors at the CVI from just about every state and dozens of countries who come to Minden just for the world-class soaring. Last week, the Carson Valley Visitors Authority posted their latest video featuring the Terri Arnold – the Carson Valley Rider. You may remember her exploits with Elvis here at the Carson Valley Inn last February? This time she's up in a glider (no, the horse didn't fly) and the scenery is spectacular. Thanks to Soaring NV for making this video possible - and for sending so many out-of-town guests our way!

Free In Our Cabaret Lounge This Weekend:
  • Decades entertains on Thursday and Friday. This young and energetic group presents a vibrant and diverse act from Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" to Katy Perry’s “California Girls"  (big gap, huh!) Decades' 4 part harmonies and energized rhythm section truly shine when playing hits from the 1950's to today.
  • Petty Theft – A Tribute to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers takes the stage on Saturday night. Come on down and enjoy Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around (sung in the video above by Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks – a definite rock classic and we'll bet you'll be humming it the rest of the day!) , Refugee, Free Fallin', American Girl, Don’t Do Me Like That, I Won't Back Down and many more. It's free in our Cabaret Lounge this Saturday night!
Concert Notes:
  • The Chris Young Concert on Saturday August 2 has sold well past the halfway point – don't miss out!
  • The Austinpalooza to benefit Austin’s House on Saturday, August 16 had a slight adjustment and we are now offering a total of five bands including Lee Rocker, formerly of The Stray Cats, as the headliner.
  • The Charlie Daniels Band Concert on August Friday, 29 is basically sold out with a couple of handfuls of tickets remaining. If you missed out, check back as we may put some "Standing Room Only" tickets on sale – and, as we have said in the past, this is somewhat of a misnomer because you can bring a blanket and sit on the grass area.
Putting Contest in Poker Room? We know, on the surface it doesn't quite make sense. However, many of our poker players and dealers are golfers, so this putting promo is quite popular. It happens this Thursday thru Sunday as part of British Open ("The Open" for purists) weekend.  If you make a full-house, and win the pot, you get to roll one putt - make the putt and we'll add 1,000 points to your INN Club account on-the-spot! Speaking of Poker, be sure to check out the new tournament schedule,  Friday night drawings, double points days and more that we covered last week.

American Century Celebrity Golf this Weekend: With over 100 golf groups headquartering at the Carson Valley Inn each year it's only fitting that we put in this reminder about the 25th annual American Century Championship this Friday through Sunday at the majestic Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. While some of sports' and entertainment's greatest celebrities will be playing this week, you and your golf group can enjoy Edgewood Tahoe, too . . . it's one of the 13 Area Courses we offer in our group golf packages. And for smaller groups of 4 – 8 golfers, we have a special Clear-Edge Golf Package featuring a round each at Edgewood Tahoe and the private Clearcreek Golf Course.

As Always, Interesting and/or Helpful Tidbits and News:
  • Mike's Horses: Didn't hear of any running this weekend – but there will definitely be some activity in the next couple of weeks as Del Mar revs up its summer run.
  • This Week's Game-On Fridays special in CV Steak is a Game Mix Grill with marinated Buffalo and Elk medallions, Venison and Rabbit Sausage and finished with a Brandy Cherry Demi-Glace. As always: served with tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato . . . all for $29.00!
  • Reminder Regarding 8-10-84: Were you at the Carson Valley Inn on August 10, 1984? If so, get in touch with us and tell us your story!
