Job Fair Tuesday, Football is Back, Somebody Like You at the 38 Special Concert

Job Fair Tuesday
Whether you’re looking for Flexibility, Opportunity or something in between, we invite YOU to stop by our Job Fair this coming Tuesday from 3 to 7 PM in the Convention Center at the Carson Valley Inn!  We’ll be hiring for full-time and part-time positions at all four of our properties: the Carson Valley Inn in Minden, Sharkey’s Casino in Gardnerville, and Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino in Carson City. Many positions have flexible scheduling and there's always an opportunity to grow within our company if there’s a match between our needs and your personality, ambition and talents!

Marissa (l), Miguel (c) and Sandy (r) All Now Work Part Time
Flexibility: Marissa worked for us full-time this summer as a hostess in Katie's and she now works weekends while applying herself midweek towards earning her AA degree at Western Nevada College. Miguel started as a busser in Katie's in 2015 and his attitude and work ethic quickly got him promoted to a server position. He's now working full time during the summer and weekends during the school year as he attends the University of Nevada. Says Miguel, “The company allows me to pursue my education yet keep earning money!"   Sandy works three 6-hour shifts in Job's Perk each week because “and I don't want to be home all the time, I wanted something to bring in a few extra dollars and keep my mind going while building new memories!”

Jessica (l), Darren (c) and Shalyn (r) "Moved Up Through the Ranks!"
Opportunity: As we have grown to four properties – with perhaps more on the horizon? – We continue to train from within. Jessica started as a busser in CV Steak, soon took on bartending, later moved to the casino floor as a slot attendant/cocktail server and slot lead position. She then went into our Manager On Duty (MOD) training program and is now part of the CVI MOD staff. Shalyn started as a server in Katie's back in 2006.  Two+ years ago she went into the MOD training program during which she worked at all four of our properties and is now one of the Managers on Duty at Sharkey's. Darren first worked at the CVI in Katie's and the old Michael's Restaurant when he was in high school.  He return to the CVI when he turned 21 and worked as a change person and slot key person before being promoted to his current position as slot lead/supervisor.

Let's Talk: Whether you’re looking for flexibility, opportunity, or something in between, we’d like to meet you and talk with you at Tuesday's Job Fair. Department representatives will be doing interviews and will be extending job offers to successful applicants.  Want to shortcut the process?  Stop at the Carson Valley Inn HR Department any time between now and Tuesday to pick up an application or click on this link and download a fillable PDF job application. You can save it, complete the info, print it, and bring it with you to the Job Fair (or before if you wish).

38 Special Concert Perfect for
Somebody Like You!
Who is attending the 38 Special Concert in TJ’s Corral on Friday, September 21? Hopefully it’s Somebody Like You,” the title of the 38 Special hit from the album "Strength in Numbers" recorded for A&M Records and released in 1986.  You can buy tickets on our website or in person at the Hotel Front Desk.

  • Over 40 HDTVs, the full NFL package, and the just about every major college game combine to  provide plenty of viewing opportunities in the Cabaret Lounge, Cabaret Bar, pit area, poker room and CV Steak Bar. Add in the HDTVs at Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino and our combined football and other sports viewing possibilities exceed 100  screens!!
  • Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer - as much beer as we can fit in an 16 ounce cup - during  all NFL games at the CVI. Want to munch while you watch? Our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM is back and it’s been expanded to all four properties with a special $5 parlay card each week. Pick all 15 games straight up and the Jackpot is yours! The “pot” starts at $2,500 and it works very similar to a slot progressive: The amount climbs each week based on the number of cards bet until it hits! Play as many cards as you wish and remember, the jackpot can only be won at one of our four casinos!
  • Special Giveaways for Monday's Raider's/Rams Game:  We have an assortment of Raiders hats and t-shirts to give away during this Monday's Raider's/Rams game which is scheduled to kick off at 7:20 PM. We’ll continue with Raiders and Niners merchandise giveaways whenever either of these teams is playing on a Thursday or Monday night. Watch for Greg when he’s distributing drawing tickets.
  • A $160 Monday Night Football Grid is on tap in our poker room every week and you can obtain squares by making various hands during the week in live poker games. Check the details on this page and get in on the $40 payouts for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters and for the final score. This week’s squares are for the early Jets/Lions game scheduled for 4:10 PM.
  • Our Guys Picks:  the last few years Mike and Alan from our Sports Book and Greg from the Sales team have picked two games (college or pro) each week to see who can come up with the best record at the end of the year.  All three guys agreed to jump in again this year and Steve Forester also joined in so let's see how they do.  Alan is going with two NFL underdogs this week: the Texans +6 ½ at New England and the Jets +6 ½ over the Lions.  Mike chimed in with Rutgers +36 at Ohio St. and the Minnesota Golden Gophers -2 ½ against Fresno St.   Greg kicked off his season taking the Eagles +2 ½ at Atlanta and Da’Bears +8 ½ at Green Bay.  Steve joins the fray with the Saints -9 ½ at Tampa Bay and the Browns +5 vs. the Steelers.
  • Bet Here/Collect There! Sports tickets can be cashed-in at Guest Services when the Sports Book is closed. Horse Race tickets can be cashed only when the Race and Sports Book is open. Winning sports bets placed at any of our four casinos (CVI, Bodines, Sharkey’s and SlotWorld) can be cashed at any of the four locations.
  • What’s On The Board: This week you can bet NCAA and NFL Football, Major League Baseball, WNBA Championship Games, Canadian Football League, Sunday’s NASCAR Big Machine Brickyard 400 and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship and the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Just for Fun
  • Friday is Beer Lovers Day.  Arnold Schwarzenegger is credited with having said, “Milk is for babies. When you grow up you have to drink beer.” So when with the kids, order milk for them in Katie's. When here without them, enjoy a beer at our Casino Bar, CV Steak Bar or at your seat while gaming!
  • Sunday is Grandparents Day.  Here's a shout out to all of the grandparents who frequent the CVI! How about all of us with grandparents grab a couple of cupcakes at the Katie’s Bakery Counter and give ‘em to grandma and/or grandpa just to show your appreciation!

Craps the Easy Way, Concerts Selling Out, Wine Walk on Longest Day, Coffee Carafes, More

Craps the Easy Way!
Craps is one of the most exciting casino games and, as a bonus, is the table game with the most favorable odds for the players. For some, it’s an adrenaline rush they totally understand. For others, it’s a something you watch from a few steps back because you’re either intimidated or haven’t had or taken an opportunity to learn in a non-intimidating environment. Wherever you fall in the spectrum, we now have the solution: our giant Craps machine just inside the front casino entrances ready for you to play 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Play for $1 (where can you do that on a live game!) or up to $200. Jump in while the game is already in action, grab a couple of friends and start your own action, or play on your own when no one else is around. As for learning the game, stop by when no one’s playing and use the various buttons on the left side to learn all about the rules, odds, and how you win or lose on any type of roll. Play the Pass Line, Field, Hard Ways or – for those who want to venture to the dark side – the Don’t Pass Line!

Clint Black Next in TJ’s Corral
A Few Standing Room Tickets
Remain for Clint Black June 29
Clint Black is next up on the TJ’s Corral 2018 schedule and the Friday, June 29 concert has less than 50 Standing Room tickets remaining. As a reminder, feel free to bring a blanket (no chairs) and relax on the slightly elevated grass area behind the seating section. If you’ve been to a TJ’s concert, you already know the grass area is pretty darn close to the stage. Following Clint, Ted Nugent rocks the TJ’s stage on Wednesday, July 4; Trace Adkins rolls in on Saturday, July 14 (limited tickets remain) and Creedence Clearwater Revisited  wraps up the season (unless we add something that falls in our lap) on Sunday, August 12. Purchase tickets through our website which allows you to view the seating layout map and select your seat. You can also buy tickets in person at the Hotel Front Desk.

Wanna Work Part Time?
Or Full Time But Want Afternoons Free?
  • Are you sort-of retired but still want to work a couple of days a week to stay socially connected and earn a few extra bucks?  Or, perhaps you are only available 4 hours a day and want to work during those free hours to maintain your sanity or save for a special purpose? Maybe you have restrictions on how much you can earn and a full time job would bust the limit? Whatever your situation, if you want to jump in on a part time basis we might just be able to accommodate your schedule! While we are looking to fill a number of full-time positions, some of our openings could also be perfect for reliable part-timers.
  • Here’s a possibility for anyone knowledgeable or experienced in baking . . . but you want or need the afternoons free: Our Baker’s Assistant position starts in the wee hours and you’re off for the day by noon . . . perfect for enjoying the outdoors, spending time with the kids, etc.
  • Check at this link for info on all of our open positions and feel free to call our HR folks at 775-783-6663 with any questions or to throw your hat into the mix for full or part time!
This Week’s Activities and Events
Swim a Lap, Workout, Soak!
  • Thursday is Daylight Appreciation Day which is a fancy way of saying the “longest” day of the year. Means there will be plenty of daylight for this month’s “Thirsty Thursday Wine Walk” in Gardnerville. Sip ‘n’ Show is this month’s theme and be sure to show us your official wine glass when strolling through Sharkey’s.  Demont and his crew have a Free Sharkey’s T-shirt for all official wine walk participants during this week’s event.
  • Thursday is also World Music Day. Enjoy your favorite genre and “mark” the day by latching onto tickets for one or more of our four remaining concerts in TJ’s Corral!
  • Saturday is Swim a Lap Day. If that’s your thing, and you’re a guest in our Hotel, Motor Lodge or RV Park, jump into our indoor pool on the second floor and get started! Complete your workout on one of the treadmills or the multi-station weight machine in the adjacent fitness room and then wind down with a soak in one of the hot spas while taking in the mountain views.
  • Next Wednesday, June 27 is the All-American Blood Drive here at the CVI from 10 AM till 6 PM. The Bloodmobiles will be parked in our lot along Hwy 395 near the big electronic sign and you can get on the schedule by calling 800-696-4484 or click here to schedule online.
So Says Brittany M
Thanks, Brittany M! We don’t know what brought you here a couple of weeks ago, or what you thought you’d find in Minden, NV, but we’re sure appreciative of your kind remarks as posted on TripAdvidsor: “I stayed at the Carson Valley Inn with my 70 year old grandmother. My expectations were low for this trip. A casino/hotel in a small town? Cheap rooms? What am I getting myself into!? The room was clean. The beds were comfortable. The towels were well stocked. The water pressure in the shower was amazing! Every employee we encountered was friendly and accommodating. The casino staff went above and beyond to make my grandmother happy. Nohema, was working in the casino. She was gracious and friendly even when my grandmother was not. Taj was a fantastic cocktail waitress that made sure we were happy and my grandmother was well taken care of. The staff made this trip so enjoyable for us, and I hope to return soon. Thank you to all of the staff at the CVI for making sure we had a wonderful trip!” We hope you’ll visit again soon and enjoy our community again!

At the Sports and Race Book
  • This week you can wager on the World Cup Soccer matches, College World Series games, Major League Baseball games, WNBA games, Canadian Football League games, the NASCAR Toyota/Save Mart 350 at the sorta-nearby Sonoma Raceway and Horseracing.
  • Futures include winners of the World Cup Soccer, World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship and the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament!
  • If we are so big on the World Cup matches, why do our numerous electronic boards at our Sports Book offer a meager, “Please Ask About World Cup Lines?”  It finally gives us a chance to talk about soccer.  Also, our system does not display 3-way lines very well.  What is a 3-way line? That's a good question to ask the staff at the Sports Book!

Cliff & Dave tonight, The Kid and Nic Show Thursday thru Saturday, Rock River Sunday and Monday and Hans Eberbach Tuesday and Wednesday. Cliff and Dave is powerhouse singer/gospel drummer Cliff Porter and southern-fried singer/guitarist Dave Berry, often seen fronting the band Jelly Bread, providing an evening of  sultry R&B, funk and swinging rock ’n’ roll. Kirk and Nicole Tracy’s Kid and Nic Show keeps the crowd dancing, singing and laughing along as they perform pop, rock, dance, oldies, current and classic country, 80's hits, Latin, funk, swing, blues, jazz and reggae. The show also features some fun "theme" medleys of songs from movies such as Grease, The Blues Brothers and Animal House.  Rock River is Buddy and Kim from the Buddy Emmer Blues Band presenting an evening of blues and other music!  Vocalist and songwriter Hans Eberbach sings for the band Joy & Madness, an evolution of vintage soul sound with modern classic pop sensibilities.

Nevada Coach at CVI, Incredible Soaring Video, Mother's Day Dining, Hockey and TJ's, More

Wolf Pack Football Coach Here Tuesday,
Come Meet Him!
The Nevada football team finished strong last year winning two of their last three games. So, what will the 2018 season bring? Who are the strong recruits or returning players expected to make a difference? What about the new coaches and what they bring to the table? What’s the outlook for senior quarterback Ty Gangi and the two hot sophomore receivers in the Spring Game, Elijah Cooks and McLane Mannix? What did coach Norvell glean from the 2017 season that he hopes will pay dividends for this year?  Get the answers to these questions and any other questions you’d like to ask when The Wolf Pack Caravan with Coach Norvell comes to the Carson Valley Inn on Tuesday evening, May 15.   Admission is free and light refreshments will be served starting at 5:30 PM with the program scheduled from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. If you plan to attend, please give Holly a heads up at 775-682-6961. If you decide to drop in on the “day of,” feel free to do so!

A Hockey Rink Would Fit Inside TJ’s Corral,
So What?
Hockey fans already know this story and sports fans who don’t usually follow hockey are starting to take note: the Vegas Golden Knights, an NHL first-year expansion team that didn’t exist last season, won the NHL Pacific Division, has handily made it past the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs and they’re going on to the Western Conference Championship Round. With more Nevada eyes now on hockey, we’ll take this opportunity to give you an idea of how close to the action you are at a concert in TJ’s Corral.

A hockey rink will just fit inside the audience area of TJ’s Corral. If you’re sitting on the scorekeepers bench at center ice, the distance you see straight across to the other side of the rink is about the distance from the front of the stage to the back of the audience area on the raised grass. The “nosebleed seats” in TJ’s Corral (we really don’t have such a thing, but we are talking about hockey so it seemed appropriate) would be from the scorekeepers bench (front of the stage in TJ’s) to the far corners (Boards) of the hockey rink (standing in the grass area as far from the stage as possible). If you’ve ever sat or stood center ice against the glass at a hockey rink, you know that’s pretty darn close.

Now that we’ve established there really isn’t a bad seat in the house, here’s a reminder of what’s coming up: The Righteous Brothers: Bill Medley & Bucky Heard kick off the concert season on  Friday, May 25 with their romantic sounds that defined the sixties and seventies and have continued to stand the test of time. Country is the theme for the following three concerts with Travis Tritt on Friday, June 1; Granger Smith Featuring Earl Dibbles Jr. on Saturday, June 16; and Clint Black on Friday, June 29. We then switch to rock with Ted Nugent on Wednesday, July 4; back to country when Trace Adkins visits on Saturday, July 14; and wrap it up with more classic rock with Creedence Clearwater Revisited on Sunday, August 12.

Your best and fastest bet for purchasing tickets for any TJ’s Corral concert is through our website which allows you to see the seating layout map and pick your seat(s) for one or more concerts in one transaction. You can also purchase tickets in person at our Hotel Desk. Back to the Vegas Golden Knights and another tie to TJ’s Corral: the team has already sold out its season tickets for the 2018/2019 season. The analogy? A couple of our concerts just have a few tickets left so please consider this a friendly nudge!

Mother’s Day is Sunday
We Still Have Room for You!
So many times we get down to a few days before a holiday and we are pretty much “sold out” of available reservations for dinner. However, with the addition of so much more capacity due to our Champagne Brunch, we still have room for you for Mother’s Day this Sunday. Please join us at our Champagne Brunch in the Valley Ballroom from 10 AM to 2 PM (call 775-783-7768 for Brunch reservations) or Mother’s Day Specials plus the regular dinner menu in CV Steak (call 775-783-6650 for CV Steak reservations.) In Katie’s we’re serving the regular menu plus a Seafood Omelet from 7 to 11 AM and Grilled Salmon Oscar from 11 AM until 9 PM.

Soaring Above the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe
Soaring or gliding . . . call it what you may, but definitely put it on your bucket list and be sure to make it happen here in Carson Valley. Soaring NV at Minden-Tahoe Airport (5 minutes from CVI) offers a variety of soaring experiences with spectacular views of the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. Many Carson Valley Inn hotel guests have come back marveling about the visual sensation. The 360° video above gives you an idea   . . .  but sitting in the front seat and being able to see over a hundred miles in any direction in almost complete silence is something you just have to experience!

Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker
Actually, we’re up to snuff on the butcher, baker and candlestick maker openings here at the CVI. However, we are looking for cooks, a banquet steward, coffee bar attendant, front desk clerk, marketing coordinator and a few other positions. See all the openings at this link and consider applying for one of these positions. We can honestly tell you there’s never a dull day at the Carson Valley Inn! Oh, and as long as we're being honest, we do not, nor never did we, employ a candlestick maker . . . even back when candles were allowed on the tables in CV Steak and at banquets!

Stay Up All Night, Eat What You Want!
Are we really suggesting that you abandon all restraint? Only marginally, read on.
  • Today is Third Shift Worker’s Day and we salute the CVI employees who stay up all night keeping the Carson Valley Inn open for those of you who wander in during the wee hours of the night. Thanks also to the law enforcement, fire department, paramedics, doctors, and others who work graveyard shift and are there for us when we need them!
  • Ironically, Thursday is Stay Up All Night Day. We suppose this is no cause for celebration for those who work the third shift and we applaud whoever came up with this day for their highly complex recommendation as to how to best celebrate the occasion . . . And this straight from the page at the link above: “The best way to celebrate this night is to stay up all night.” Whew - we never would’ve figured that out on our own!
  • Friday is Eat What You Want Day and our only guess is that this “special day” was instituted for those who simply want to continue the overindulgence of last Sunday’s No Diet Day.
  • Sunday is Top Gun Day which we only mentioned because it reminds us how absolutely incredible it was to have Kenny Loggins perform Danger Zone in TJ’s Corral last summer!
  • Tuesday is Chocolate Chip Day. This one’s a no-brainer: go directly to Job’s Perk or the Katie’s Bakery Counter, buy one or more chocolate chip cookies, consume immediately or at your pleasure!

Chris Twomey’s roots are deep into a genre of folk-rock . . . from 2Me to The Diva Kings to Dad's LPs to whatever is next.  Jo Mama conveys the same high energy whether they are playing funk, Latin, blues, swing, rock, country or calypso.  The group features Paul Covarelli on guitar and vocals, drummer Bill Heise lays down the back beat, Rocky Taterelli horns in on smokin' sax and Nancy Barker rounds it out on keyboards and vocals.  Carolyn Dolan can dive into powerful R & B, deliver a smooth jazz standard or a gentle country ballad.  Roem Baur is a multiple award-winning touring songwriter and classically trained opera singer who ultimately answered the call of rock n' roll.

Merle Haggard Selling Fast, Free Chevy Sonic Saturday, Dubai World Cup, More

Free Car Saturday Night! We've been promoting it all month and now the time has come: this Saturday night we are giving away a free Chevy Sonic or a cash option in our grand prize drawings which will be held at 6 and 8 p.m. in the casino. Don't have a Golden Ticket yet for the free car drawing? Stop by this Friday for drawings at 5, 7 and 9 p.m. for more chances to win! And if you happen to be going to Bodines casino this coming weekend, don't fret – we're giving away a Chevy Sonic up there also! Special thanks to our most cooperative friends at Michael Hohl Motor Company who helped with this promotion.

Silver Wings – One of Merle's Classics!
Tickets are selling quite briskly for the Merle Haggard Concert on Friday night, May 1. Might want to make sure you get yours before too long 'cause this one is trending towards an advance sell-out! Tickets for the Gary Allan Concert on June 4 will go on sale sometime in early to mid-April.

Sharkey's Update of Sorts: We had a great walk-through with the architect on Tuesday of this week. Some of the visions he's been explaining to us are now starting to show themselves and we're getting pretty excited about the look, feel and ambiance associated with the rebirth of Sharkey's. We'd like to share more, but things are happening so fast and furious that our visit was cut a bit short with a half kidding, half serious comment from the general contractor as he walked by us, "Grab a hammer or a paintbrush or move along!!"

Job Opportunities This Friday: Our HR folks will be at the Spring Carson Valley Career Job Opportunity Fair this Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the CVIC Hall in Minden. We're still looking for food servers for the soon-to-open Sharkey's and we have about a dozen positions open here at the Carson Valley Inn. Stop by and look us up!

Forty to Qualify for Free $2000 Poker Tournament: Players in our poker room have been moving up and down rungs on our poker ladder as we get closer to the March 31 cutoff when we determine the top 40 players to participate in the free poker tournament on April 11 with $2000 in cash prizes. The points you earn in the poker room help you climb up the ladder. And, with some of our poker room promotions providing wheel spins which can give you extra points, you never know who's going to suddenly move up on the ladder, move on to the ladder, or drop to a rung below the cutoff. The standings are posted and last we checked at least 15 people sitting below the 40 cutoff could easily move into a qualifying spot with a little more play time or one spin of the prize wheel. Come on in and check it out! (More Poker info for the ladies below)

California Chrome and Secret Circle in Dubai: This Saturday the horse racing world turns its attention 8000 miles from the Carson Valley when the world’s richest day of racing unfolds at Meydan Racecourse and the Dubai Racing Club.  Richest day? Try this: Nine races with total prize money of just short of $30 million! Mike Pegram's Secret Circle is scheduled to run in the $2 Million Dubai Golden Shaheen and Steve Coburn's 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome is slated to go in the feature event, the $10 Million Dubai World Cup.  Interested? Read on:
  • We will be showing the races on the televisions in our cabaret bar.
  • You can bet the two races with local connections at the Race and Sports Book at the CVI.
  • The first race starts at 5 a.m. Saturday. The Golden Shaheen is not until the 6th race and the Dubai World Cup will not start until 8:00 a.m. or after, best we can figure. Anyway, we'll be open before the Golden Shaheen starts.
  • For more about the richest day in racing click here.
Imagine this Phone Conversation: Think the Dubai World Cup races are an instant path to riches for winning horses from the USA? That big prize money for each race is distributed to the various finishers, it isn't winner take all. The trainers, managers, jockeys and handlers all get a piece of the winnings. The owners need to get to Dubai and back (Southwest doesn't fly there for $199 each way!), they'll need a place to stay (sure makes the CVI look like a bargain) and dining out in Dubai is . . . well, you would long for the prices in Katie's or CV Steak. Then there's this call:
  • Other End: Good Morning, Federal Express, may I help you?
  • You: Yes, I'd like to ship my prized thoroughbred from southern California to Dubai and back, first class of course, and can you arrange boarding for the week he is there?
  • Other End: Sure, (pause) . . . that total will be $$$$ - no make that $$$$$ - including pickup and delivery and all fees.
  • You: Gulp!
The August Aviation Roundup is More Than Airplanes: Don't you think this little guy had his day made when he met one of the Thunderbird pilots at the Minden-Tahoe Airport earlier this week! A memory for a lifetime. Their advance visit to Carson Valley on Monday was most productive and you can catch more in this story posted by Joey Crandall of carsonvalleytimes.com and this story posted by Shane Murphy of The Record CourierBe sure to mark August 22 & 23 on your calendars for the 2015 Aviation Roundup!

Ladies Poker Tournament Sunday: Our monthly ladies poker tournament is this Sunday, March 29 so that we don't conflict with Easter next week. The fun starts at 3 p.m. when Sharon gives free poker lessons for all the ladies. If you've played just a little, or are somewhat nervous about participating in a tournament, stop by starting at 3 and Sharon will have you tuned up and ready to go by the time the tournament starts. Under the direction of Derek Johnson, the Ladies-Only No-limit Texas Hold'em Bounty Tourney starts at 4 p.m. with the usual friendly assistance by Dean and Roberta. We hope you can join us!
