Many of us who work at CVI and walk through the hotel lobby regularly are now allowing extra time . . . Turns out we are having a blast taking pictures of our guests in front of this display. They all start the same: mom is taking a picture of dad and the kids and then they swap. As soon as we come up and say “let us take a picture of all of you,” they can’t wait to jump in and huddle together in front of the fireplace. Not only are we happy to see all the smiles, but we get to experience all the latest smartphone technology! What Would You Do
With A $83,000 Jackpot Win?

Rather than manufacture our own hype, we asked about a dozen Penny Progressive players over the last few days what they would do with the money if they won. While a few answers are unprintable (in a fun way!), the rest ran the gamut and included comments such as “Pay off my bills and take the next day off”, “Buy my dream car”, “Invest for a while then buy a truck and RV”, “Pay off my house”, and “Divide it up between my four grown sons and let them decide how to spend it on their kids. Two of the people we asked have won our Penny Progressive before. When asked what she would do if she won it again, one of them said “I don’t think lightning will hit twice, I’m playing it for the memories!” What would you do? Somebody will get to make that decision as this jackpot can (and eventually will) only be won at one of our four properties; the Carson Valley Inn, Bodines Casino, Sharkey’s Casino or Slot World.

Friday is Bartender Appreciation Day. We asked a half dozen of our bartenders what they would like on bartender appreciation day. Funny thing is, they all were very positive and said they feel appreciated every day. They even like hearing your stories if they aren’t too busy!
Monday is Cookie Day. With all due respect to those of our readers whose grandmothers makes the best darn cookies in the world, we do have a backup plan: large Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, Oatmeal Raisin and Sugar Cookies are baked daily at the CVI and are available at the Katie’s Bakery Counter for $1.50 each or 6 for $6.

Gardnerville Christmas Kickoff, Thursday, November 30: This seasonally themed evening in Heritage Park is just a block from Sharkey’s Casino and includes musical performances by All About Dance Kids & Joyful Noise Children's Choir, Christmas carolers, a musical light show, horse-drawn wagon rides, photo opportunities with Santa and a Fireworks Finale sponsored by Sharkey’s Casino and Beall’s. Be sure to swing by Sharkey’s where we’ll be ready with hot chocolate (and other hot drinks) to go . . . or for a sit-down meal before or after the festivities.
Town of Minden Gazebo Lighting, Friday, December 1: Minden kicks off the holidays with the lighting of the historic downtown Minden Gazebo, music from the DHS Jazz Band and fire pits with S’mores. Kids who bring a canned food item or a donation for the Carson Valley Food Closet receive a goodie bag and a chance to help Santa light the Gazebo! If you wind up parking at or near the CVI, stop by before or after to warm up or see our Christmas decorations.

Parade of Lights, Saturday, December 2: The Carson Valley Chamber’s 22nd Annual Parade of Lights anchors our local Christmas weekend with a steady parade of brightly lit floats traversing Highway 395 from Eddy St. in Gardnerville (very close to Sharkey’s Casino) to Minden Park, just two blocks from the Carson Valley Inn! Come on out and help our community honor this year’s grand marshal Kurt Hildebrand, long-time editor of The Record Courier!

A Few Words About Sports Tickets: Now that the smoke has (mostly) cleared on the opening of Slot World, here’s a handy summary on how sports betting works at our four properties: We are not affiliated with any of the chain sports books; we set our own odds and we determine the hours. So, you can place and collect sports bets any time the Sports Book is open at the Carson Valley Inn or Bodines Casino. At Sharkey’s and Slot World, all sports betting and winning ticket collecting is done at Guest Services. A winning sports bet placed at any of our four casinos can be cashed at any of our four casinos. Horse Race bets can only be placed or cashed when the Race and Sports Book is open at the CVI or Bodines Casino.

Slot World Joins the Family

Slot World Casino on Hwy 50 East in Carson City reopens at 8 AM today as part of our “family” that also includes Bodines Casino in Carson City, the Carson Valley Inn in Minden and Sharkey’s Casino in Gardnerville. Slot World underwent a complete transformation over the last 6 – 7 weeks with just about everything demolished and rebuilt from the air handling equipment, to the floors, walls, ceiling, restrooms, casino, kitchen, restaurant and everything in between! Colorful lighting is evident throughout the casino bringing life and energy. A large bar in the center of the casino provides a gathering place to meet friends, enjoy a cocktail or watch sports on one of the many HDTV flat-screens. “Betsy’s Big Kitchen” is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. serving breakfast, lunch and dinner choices plus weekend dinner specials. Our owner Mike Pegram has a horse scheduled to run in the $500,000 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs Friday – check with the crew at our Race and Sports Book for more information.
Remember the boisterous Bunko for Breast Cancer event held in our Valley Ballroom last month? The evening of costumes, revelry and bunco play raised over $22,500 for the efforts of the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center bringing the total to over a quarter of a million dollars raised by our community through this GE sponsored event over the last 14 years.
Sunday is National Cake Day and we innocently thought this would be a good opportunity to feature one of the many cakes made in our bakery. We went down to the bakery yesterday morning we were politely told by our bakers in unison that unless it was about a pie this week, they didn’t have time for us. After bringing our cake level up to par on Monday, they started concentrating on baking the pumpkin pies necessary to handle all of the Thanksgiving specials served in Katie’s, the many pumpkin pie orders placed in advance by our customers at our Katie’s bakery counter, and the double-digit dozens of pies needed to complete the Turkey Dinners to Go we will be distributing on Thursday morning.
Tuesday is National French Toast Day and with the opening of Betsy’s Big Kitchen at Slot World we now have four locations at which you can enjoy French toast on Tuesday morning – or any morning. Joining Betsy’s (Texas toast base) are Katie’s (our own baked bread) at the Carson Valley Inn, the Jackpot Café at Sharkey’s Casino (brioche bread) and the restaurant in Bodine’s Casino (Texas toast base).

The crew in our poker room got together last week and decided they would start smuggling pizza in on Saturdays . . . So, our poker room now offers Free Pizza for players Saturdays from 6 PM until it's gone - what a perfect addition to the already-available free draft beer for players. Once on a roll, they started tweaking the high hand of the hour promotion and decided that all spins between 7 and 10 PM would pay Double Points on the wheel. The important point is that registration is now open for the 2018 Eagles and Ag Weekend Thursday, January 25 through Sunday, January 28. Most of the social/educational events associated with this annual Gathering of Eagles and Celebration of Agriculture are centered around the Carson Valley Inn. Since moving the event to late January (the weekend before Super Bowl) the eagles and other raptors seem to be more cooperative and the events are selling out in advance. So, we suggest you go onto the Carson Valley Chamber’s website and register for those events that pique your interest. And be sure to call us at 775-783-6629 to make your hotel or motor lodge reservations at special Eagles and Ag rates. Now, back to Bill Chernock: he is the Executive Director of the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and it turns out that his cell phone “dings” every time an Eagles and Ag transaction is registered. Nothing makes Bill happier than to be sitting in a meeting and have the constant dinging as an “announcement” to others that the event is selling well!

We mentioned last week that the KTVN Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive is Friday, December 8 from 6 AM to 6 PM and we learned earlier this week that the Toys for Tots program is tying into all three Food Drive locations. So, in addition to dropping off food and money for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, you can also drop off toys for this long-time U.S. Marines sponsored program. If you absolutely cannot make it by on the day of the Food Drive (or even if you can) you can buy a $10 bag at the Gardnerville Raley’s or drop food at one of these companies gathering for delivery to the CVI location on December 8: Ginger Easley/REMAX, Parigini Orthodontics, Kaia Fit Minden/Carson City, Joe Benigno’s Tree Service and the Nevada Department of Corrections.

We’ll get back to the free pie in a minute. On a more timely matter, Monday, November 20 at noon is the deadline for ordering one of our Thanksgiving Turkey Dinners to Go for up to 10 people. It happens through the Katie’s supervisor who you can reach by calling 775-783-6664. As for the free pie, it’s a frozen pumpkin pie and you can pick one up on Wednesday, November 22 by earning 50 points the same day. Once that happens, you swipe your card at the casino kiosk for a pumpkin pie certificate and swing into Job’s Perk to pick it up. Thaw it for Thanksgiving or the next holiday! Speaking of Thanksgiving, enjoy our regular menu items in both CV Steak and Katie's or feast on one of our Thanksgiving Specials.

Slot World Rounds 4^th Turn onto Final Stretch

While the analogy to a horse race is fitting for our owner, Mike Pegram, it truly does describe what’s going on at Slot World this week - a frantic race to the finish line! If all goes well and all approvals are obtained (there are many) we’ll be opening one day next week. Our walk-through this week was like ducking dodgeballs coming from behind a dozen bushes in every direction. Whatever your notion of Slot World was before, throw it out the door! There are lots of new slots, creative lighting and coloring effects, a very large casino bar, three dozen TV screens, sports betting, a fourth location at which to win our multi-property Penny Progressive Jackpot and much more. A totally new and expanded Betsy’s Big Kitchen will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner plus weekend dinner specials. We could go on, but we hope everyone will come see for themselves. When? KTVN Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive Coming Up

We just set the clocks back last weekend and that’s our signal that the KTVN Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive is only a month away . . . After we get through Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday! The date is Friday, December 8 from 6 AM to 6 PM in our parking area under the electronic marquee sign along Highway 395. Popular KTVN newscasters Arianna Bennett and Ryan Canaday will be returning to the CVI location this year and they’ll be joined by Ky Sisson and a support crew of three. Look for more information in the coming weeks about this incredible day of generosity that benefits the thousands of people in our community served by the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

Free Veteran’s Day Spaghetti Feed This Saturday

Our 7^th Annual Free Spaghetti Lunch for all Veterans and Active Military personnel is this Saturday in the Valley Ballroom. The Douglas High School Jr. ROTC Honor Guard will do the Presentation of Colors at 11 a.m. and Kimora Whitacre will sing the National Anthem. Lunch service will begin immediately after and continue until 2 p.m. Veterans and active military personnel simply present your military ID for entrance, and lunch for you and your guest is on the Carson Valley Inn! If you don't have your ID, just tell the host about your service to our country and they’ll welcome you anyway!

We Survived a Slot World Walk Thru Yesterday!

A couple of us crawled out of the cubicle in which we write this blog and took a tour of what’s going on with the extensive (an understatement) renovations at our newest sister property, Slot World on Highway 50 E. in Carson City.

When we pulled up, there were so many cars in the parking lots that we felt for a moment the place was open and business was booming. Once we got inside, we realized that all those vehicles belonged to the many dozens of tradesmen, slot people, purveyors, delivery people, employees in training and others who just looked like they were doing something important.
We carefully darted between slots, various types of equipment being rolled in, large construction paraphernalia, boxes, crates, and just about every other imaginable piece, part, tool or contraption that goes into making a total renovation happen. While spending more time watching where we were going, we did notice the outline of the large casino-center bar is taking shape and part of the casino was carpeted with slots being placed. The rest of the casino was getting prepped with carpeting stacked nearby and ready to be laid later this week. It was most obvious that the previous interior had been totally demolished and that everything was new!
The only semblance of order (at least by layman’s definition) was the actual dining area of Betsy’s Big Kitchen where a couple dozen of the just-under-100 employees were going through a training session. The rest are training later this week and next week or are shadowing various positions at the CVI, Bodines Casino or Sharkey’s casino.
If you've driven by, you probably noticed that the outside of the building has been painted, most of the parking lot areas have been resurfaced and re-striped, and other signs of rebirth are starting to show – with more to come.
Realizing that the two of us with notepads did not fit into the hurrying and scurrying, we left with a promise to come back early next week, gather more detailed information, and start answering the many questions we’ve been receiving including the most often heard “When will you be reopening?” We actually did get an answer to that one: Look for the reopening of Slot World right before Thanksgiving – if everything goes well. More next week!

Today is National Cappuccino Day and Job’s Perk (open 6 AM to 9 PM) offers this Italian coffee drink traditionally prepared with double espresso and steamed milk foam.
Saturday is National Sundae Day and we have plenty of options in Katie’s starting with our Baby Sundae and continuing on with our full-size selections including the Stuffed Fudge Brownie Sundae, Classic Hot Fudge Sundae, Turtle Sundae and a Banana Split (please, don't get us started on the discussion that went into whether or not a Banana Split is technically a Sundae!)
Sunday is National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day. We enthusiastically send you up to Bodines Casino where we make hand-tossed pizzas to order and cook ‘em in Bodine’s special high-heat pizza oven. Have it any way you like from plain cheese all the way up to the Works Except Anchovies!

Mike looks to continue his roll with Northwestern –4 ½ vs. Purdue and the Georgia Bulldogs –3 at Auburn. Alan will take Colorado St. +5 ½ vs. Boise State and THE U (Miami) +3 ½ vs Notre Dame.
