Kandy Kane Craft Fair Friday – Sunday

The 20th Annual Kandy Kane Craft Fair fills our Valley Ballroom this Friday through Sunday - A great opportunity to stock up on gifts and seasonal decorations in one convenient location! You’ll have the opportunity to purchase items such as ornaments, lamps, holiday décor and treats, jewelry, scarves, purses, sports items, wood toys, quilts and much more. Admission is free and hours are 9 AM to 6 PM Friday and Saturday and 10 AM to 4 PM Sunday. For more information contact Kandy at 775-721-7154.

Holiday With A Hero Saturday

The focus of Carson City’s Holiday With A Hero will be at SlotWorld Casino this Saturday when the First Responders of Carson City will be “staffing” Betsy’s Big Kitchen, but that’s just the beginning of the story. All restaurant receipts for this Saturday from both SlotWorld and Bodines will be donated to the Holiday With A Hero program. These funds will be used to help the program and its 300 volunteers insure that over 250 kids in Carson are provided with a $100 Gift Card - and the story gets even better. In December each recipient is accompanied by a First Responder as his or her personal shopping aide as the full group descends on the Carson City Walmart to pick out one item of need and, in many cases, gifts for other family members.

Or, an incredible sweet from The Chocolate Shoppe. These and the other local participating Carson Valley businesses would welcome your visit!

So much for the nay-sayers discounting the Niners for not beating a decent team. The Monday Night graphic said that the Niners will be the first team in the Super Bowl era to play three consecutive games against opponents with at least an .800 winning percentage: Packers, Ravens and Saints. After the Ravens performance Monday night, Niners fans gotta still be leary.
Did you know: the Detroit Lions are playing their 80th Thanksgiving Day game? The Cowboys are up to 52. Apparently, the University of Michigan started up the tradition of Thanksgiving Day football back in 1885.

Roem Baur Band Thursday thru Saturday: Multiple award-winning touring songwriter and San Francisco resident Roem Baur has been featured on the main stage at Super Bowl 50, NBC’s The Voice, and at CES & SXSW conferences. A classically trained opera singer, he answered the call of rock n’ roll shortly after college. After winning Bob Weir’s (The Grateful Dead) national “Road to TRI” contest, Baur and his band were invited to record a live EP in Weir’s personal studio, the product of which can be found on Roem’s YouTube page and has since propelled him to a whole new era of rock fans.
NFL Football Sunday and Monday Nights: We suspend live entertainment on Sunday and Monday nights during the fall so the featured night NFL games can be enjoyed on the big screen.

If you were fortunate enough to order one of our Turkey Dinners to Go prior to us selling out, we’ll see you just inside the hotel entrance on Thanksgiving Day at your assigned pickup time between 10 AM and 1 PM. If you have a reservation in CV Steak, enjoy your dinner and thanks for "filling us up" on Thursday! If you’re planning to have Thanksgiving Dinner in Katie’s or at the Jackpot Café in Sharkey’s, you can choose from our regular menu or our traditional Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner Special with all the trimmings for $14.99. Katie's and Jackpot Café seating is on a first-come basis. Whatever your plans on Thanksgiving Day, please stay safe!

The annual KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive is coming up on Friday, December 7 in our west parking lot along Highway 395. Yesterday we received the above picture from KTVN which is their “reveal” of the crew we’ll be living with from 6 AM to 6 PM that day: Ryan Canaday on the left, Angela Schilling in the center and Arianna Bennett on the right. With Zac Mooney as the Minden location producer, there’s no telling what antics will happen as all four have “been here before” and have a history of unusual spontaneous antics! Reminder: all food and cash donated on December 7 serves our locals through the Carson Valley Community Food Closet!

Cake Day - We Have You Covered

35 Years Ago Today was the official groundbreaking for the Carson Valley Inn on Monday, November 21, 1983. Then Governor Dick Bryant was on hand as was former Governor Bob List and a host of local dignitaries.
Today is Tie One On Day which you already knew about if you read our blog two weeks ago. Good reminder to decorate your CVI Apron and wear it to Ladies Night next Wednesday, November 28 for our Apron Decoration Contest! And none of this will make sense if you did NOT read our Blog of November 7, 2018!
Friday is Espresso Day. As Mark Helprin put it, “The voodoo priest and all his powders were as nothing compared to espresso, cappuccino, and mocha, which are stronger than all the religions of the world combined, and perhaps stronger than the human soul itself.” However you interpret this, we can help you enjoy your espresso the way you like it in Job’s Perk open daily from 6 AM! And since Friday is also Eat a Cranberry Day, order a Cranberry Muffin in Job’s Perk to go along with your espresso drink of choice!
Monday is Cake Day. We’ll tempt you with these choices which are all available at the Katie’s Bakery Counter: Chocolate Fudge Cake, Carrot Cake and Pumpkin Cheesecake. These and our many other house-made cakes and pies are a much easier and faster solution to dessert than making it yourself!

Our Guys Picks were a week of perfection and imperfections. The amazing Alan went 2 & 0 last week, the other three guys were a pathetic 0 & 6. These losers couldn’t pick a winner in a one horse race! Yet, they will keep throwing darts in hopes of hitting the board. This week Mr. Perfect will look to continue his roll with the Lions +4½ against the Bears and the Redskins +7 ½ at the Cowboys. Greg looks to restart his winning ways with the Patriots -9½ at the hapless Jets and the Seahwaks +3 ½ at the Panthers. Steve is taking the Falcons +13 at the Saints and the over 60 in this same NFC East showdown. Mike is picking two of the biggest rivalry games in college football, the Michigan Wolverines -4 at Ohio St. and Washington St. -3 in the Apple Cup against Washington.
The Progressive Pro PK'EM jackpot has risen to $3,843 for whoever pick this week’s 15 winners or props straight up on a $5 Cards (play as many as you wish). Any ties are split.

Slot World Joins the Family

Slot World Casino on Hwy 50 East in Carson City reopens at 8 AM today as part of our “family” that also includes Bodines Casino in Carson City, the Carson Valley Inn in Minden and Sharkey’s Casino in Gardnerville. Slot World underwent a complete transformation over the last 6 – 7 weeks with just about everything demolished and rebuilt from the air handling equipment, to the floors, walls, ceiling, restrooms, casino, kitchen, restaurant and everything in between! Colorful lighting is evident throughout the casino bringing life and energy. A large bar in the center of the casino provides a gathering place to meet friends, enjoy a cocktail or watch sports on one of the many HDTV flat-screens. “Betsy’s Big Kitchen” is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. serving breakfast, lunch and dinner choices plus weekend dinner specials. Our owner Mike Pegram has a horse scheduled to run in the $500,000 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs Friday – check with the crew at our Race and Sports Book for more information.
Remember the boisterous Bunko for Breast Cancer event held in our Valley Ballroom last month? The evening of costumes, revelry and bunco play raised over $22,500 for the efforts of the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center bringing the total to over a quarter of a million dollars raised by our community through this GE sponsored event over the last 14 years.
Sunday is National Cake Day and we innocently thought this would be a good opportunity to feature one of the many cakes made in our bakery. We went down to the bakery yesterday morning we were politely told by our bakers in unison that unless it was about a pie this week, they didn’t have time for us. After bringing our cake level up to par on Monday, they started concentrating on baking the pumpkin pies necessary to handle all of the Thanksgiving specials served in Katie’s, the many pumpkin pie orders placed in advance by our customers at our Katie’s bakery counter, and the double-digit dozens of pies needed to complete the Turkey Dinners to Go we will be distributing on Thursday morning.
Tuesday is National French Toast Day and with the opening of Betsy’s Big Kitchen at Slot World we now have four locations at which you can enjoy French toast on Tuesday morning – or any morning. Joining Betsy’s (Texas toast base) are Katie’s (our own baked bread) at the Carson Valley Inn, the Jackpot Café at Sharkey’s Casino (brioche bread) and the restaurant in Bodine’s Casino (Texas toast base).

Our Guys Picks: It can’t get any worse for Greg going 1 & 5 the past three weeks. He will continue to ride the Cleveland Browns (2 – 8 against the spread) and take them +8 ½ at the Bengals and the Arizona Wildcats as a pick’em at ASU. Now on to the winning picks! Mike will take Bama –4 ½ at Auburn and the Washington State Cougars +9 at Washington. Alan will continue his hot streak with the Chargers as a pick’em at the Cowboys and the Giants +7 ½ at the Redskins. After 11 weeks, both Mike and Alan (the Sportsbook guys) are 13 & 9 and Greg (the Sales guy) is 7 & 15.

Denver Saunders tonight, The Kid and Nic Show Thursday thru Saturday, NFL Football on Sunday and Monday and Patrick Major Wednesday. Vocalist/guitarist Denver Saunders will have you dancing, laughing and even singing along. Kirk and Nicole Tracy have been performing together since 1977. Their Kid and Nic Show keeps the crowd dancing, singing and laughing along as they perform pop, rock, dance, oldies, current and classic country, 80's hits, Latin, funk, swing, blues, jazz and reggae. The show also features some fun "theme" medleys of songs from movies such as Grease, The Blues Brothers and Animal House. Patrick Major’s style includes his own mix of original guitar and vocals combined with rock classics from the last four decades.

Tonight’s special in CV Steak is the CV Steak Mix Grill, a combination of our Filet Mignon, a Dijon and molasses Marinated Pork Tenderloin Medallion and Herb Marinated Lamb Chop for $26. This Friday, it's Alligator Tenderloin Medallions: three sautéed medallions with a garlic caper wine sauce for $28. Saturday night’s special is Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sunday's special is one pound of King Crab Legs for $32. These specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato – au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked – tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread.

The crew in our poker room got together last week and decided they would start smuggling pizza in on Saturdays . . . So, our poker room now offers Free Pizza for players Saturdays from 6 PM until it's gone - what a perfect addition to the already-available free draft beer for players. Once on a roll, they started tweaking the high hand of the hour promotion and decided that all spins between 7 and 10 PM would pay Double Points on the wheel. Who is Bill Chernock and why do we want to make his phone ding? We’ll get back to that. The important point is that registration is now open for the 2018 Eagles and Ag Weekend Thursday, January 25 through Sunday, January 28. Most of the social/educational events associated with this annual Gathering of Eagles and Celebration of Agriculture are centered around the Carson Valley Inn. Since moving the event to late January (the weekend before Super Bowl) the eagles and other raptors seem to be more cooperative and the events are selling out in advance. So, we suggest you go onto the Carson Valley Chamber’s website and register for those events that pique your interest. And be sure to call us at 775-783-6629 to make your hotel or motor lodge reservations at special Eagles and Ag rates. Now, back to Bill Chernock: he is the Executive Director of the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and it turns out that his cell phone “dings” every time an Eagles and Ag transaction is registered. Nothing makes Bill happier than to be sitting in a meeting and have the constant dinging as an “announcement” to others that the event is selling well!

We mentioned last week that the KTVN Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive is Friday, December 8 from 6 AM to 6 PM and we learned earlier this week that the Toys for Tots program is tying into all three Food Drive locations. So, in addition to dropping off food and money for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, you can also drop off toys for this long-time U.S. Marines sponsored program. If you absolutely cannot make it by on the day of the Food Drive (or even if you can) you can buy a $10 bag at the Gardnerville Raley’s or drop food at one of these companies gathering for delivery to the CVI location on December 8: Ginger Easley/REMAX, Parigini Orthodontics, Kaia Fit Minden/Carson City, Joe Benigno’s Tree Service and the Nevada Department of Corrections.

We’ll get back to the free pie in a minute. On a more timely matter, Monday, November 20 at noon is the deadline for ordering one of our Thanksgiving Turkey Dinners to Go for up to 10 people. It happens through the Katie’s supervisor who you can reach by calling 775-783-6664. As for the free pie, it’s a frozen pumpkin pie and you can pick one up on Wednesday, November 22 by earning 50 points the same day. Once that happens, you swipe your card at the casino kiosk for a pumpkin pie certificate and swing into Job’s Perk to pick it up. Thaw it for Thanksgiving or the next holiday! Speaking of Thanksgiving, enjoy our regular menu items in both CV Steak and Katie's or feast on one of our Thanksgiving Specials.

Slot World Rounds 4^th Turn onto Final Stretch

While the analogy to a horse race is fitting for our owner, Mike Pegram, it truly does describe what’s going on at Slot World this week - a frantic race to the finish line! If all goes well and all approvals are obtained (there are many) we’ll be opening one day next week. Our walk-through this week was like ducking dodgeballs coming from behind a dozen bushes in every direction. Whatever your notion of Slot World was before, throw it out the door! There are lots of new slots, creative lighting and coloring effects, a very large casino bar, three dozen TV screens, sports betting, a fourth location at which to win our multi-property Penny Progressive Jackpot and much more. A totally new and expanded Betsy’s Big Kitchen will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner plus weekend dinner specials. We could go on, but we hope everyone will come see for themselves. When?
