Christmas Abounds, New December Katie's Specials, New Carpet, More

Minden Park Gazebo Lights Up This Friday
Just Two Blocks from CVI
Christmas Kickoff Weekend!
The next three nights will be filled with Christmas Kickoff traditions within walking distance of either the Carson Valley Inn, Sharkeys Casino or both! Since many people stop in before or after these events for dinner, a cocktail or to warm up, here’s a quick rundown: Thursday evening is the Gardnerville Christmas Kickoff at Heritage Park just across the street from Sharkey’s Casino. Friday evening is the Minden Park Gazebo Lighting just two short blocks from the Carson Valley Inn. And Saturday evening is the annual Parade of Lights that connects our two properties as it traverses south on Highway 395 from Heritage Park to Esmeralda Street in downtown Minden. And if you’re near Genoa on Friday or Saturday, be sure to check this link for information on the Town of Genoa’s Friday evening festivities and Saturday morning Breakfast with Santa.

Disney and Christmas Combine at CVI
Disney and Christmas Collide
 in CVI Hotel Lobby
  • Today is French Toast Day. No need to mess up your kitchen because Katie's serves French Toast (4 slices from our house-baked demi loaves) or Super French Toast (add in 2 eggs any style and 3 slices of bacon or 3 sausage links). Either way, we own the cleanup!
  • Saturday is Eat a Red Apple Day. It's great in concept, but practically speaking we suggest a slice of apple pie in Katie's or take-home a whole apple pie from Katie's Bakery Counter. Alternatively, order the Apple Bread Pudding for dessert in CV Steak.  Granted you’d have to consume a bunch of bread pudding to get a full apple equivalent, but “tis the season!”
  • Sunday is Fritters Day. The most popular fritter is an Apple fritter and, as luck would have it, we make ‘em right here in our Bakery and sell ‘em in Job’s Perk. Not a fritter fan – grab an Apple Danish!
  • Monday is Walt Disney Day. Can't make it to Disneyland or Disney World on Monday? No problem, just come by the Carson Valley Inn and check out the Disney-themed Christmas tree in the hotel lobby! Look carefully – lots of subtle Disney touches in addition to the obvious!
  • Tuesday is Dice Day. If you like to watch them roll perhaps you'd like to learn a little more about the game Craps? Our giant craps slot just inside the casino entrance is perfect: you can watch, play without others looking at you, or study the many help screens!

Wear yours tonight and you qualify for prizes in two different ways:

KTVN's Jamie Hays Interview with Food Closet Chairman Don McRoberts
Share Your Christmas Food Drive Almost Here!
Thinking about what to donate at the upcoming KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive? Here’s a link to the 2018 Most Wanted Items. Can’t decide which way to go? We asked Sarah Sanchez, Director of the Carson Valley Community Food Closet (recipient of all CVI location donations) for the “top five.”  She came back with these six: Jelly, Soup, Canned Fruits and Veggies, Heat and Eats (chili, ravioli, etc.), Boxed Mixes (rice-a-roni type items) and Baking Items (flour, sugar, baking soda, etc.).  You’ll notice that perishables are not on the long or short list . . . those are purchased by the Food Closet all year from the Northern Nevada Food Bank . . . so money is also a welcome donation! We’ll see you here on Friday, December 7 in our west parking lot from 6 AM to 6 PM!

Pardon Our Carpet Fuzz
Starting next week we will begin re-carpeting our casino, a project we have scheduled on Monday through Thursday over the next two weeks. During this time, slots will be moved around to accommodate the process and your favorite slot or table game may be unavailable for a few hours. Of special note: the front casino entrance will be closed off from 4 AM to noon this coming Monday to facilitate this project. Please don’t interpret that to mean we are closed . . . . It’s all part of our ongoing process of renewing, refreshing, refurbishing and remodeling the CVI!
Football and Other Sports at the Inn
  • Our Guys Picks!  Another pathetic (sorry, but the word fits) week for "Our Guys."  Greg went 2 & 0 and the other three were a collective 0 & 6.  According to one of the quartet, “We are thankful there are only four weeks left of this abhorrent exercise of awful hypothesizing!”  So, without further ado here are the Week 12 picks: Greg will take UCF -3 against Memphis and the Jets +9 ½ at the Titans.  Steve is sticking with betting against the Saints which has been a loser the past three weeks . . . give him the Cowboys +8 and the over 53 in the same game.  Mike sticks to the college route taking the Texas Longhorns +7 ½ vs. Oklahoma and Boise St. -2 ½ against the Fresno Bulldogs. Alan loves the Raiders +15 against the Chiefs and Appalachian St. -17 ½ against Louisiana Lafayette.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM jackpot is inching close to four thousand dollars as $3,973 is in the pot for whoever picks this week’s 15 winners or props straight up on a $5 Card (play as many as you wish). Any ties are split.
  • Monday Night Football Poker Room Grid:  $330 is available for this coming Monday’s Redskins/Eagles game: That’s $82 and change for the first three quarters and the final score. You must be present to win and any unclaimed winnings roll to the following week. Check the details on this page.
  • Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI.
  • On The Board This Week: NCAA and NFL Football, NBA and NCAA Basketball, NHL Hockey and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship, the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2019 Stanley Cup and the 2019 NBA Championship.
This Week in the Casino
  • Ladies’ Night Wednesday: See the article above.
  • Poker Room Drawings Friday: You have an entry in the drum for every poker tournament you entered during November. Drawings are at 6, 7 and 8 PM for cash and more! This promotion continues in December and all the details are in our Poker Room.

  • Ladies Only Poker Tournament Sunday:  It’s the first Sunday of the month . . . Time for the ladies to gather for the monthly Ladies Only Poker Tournament starting at 4 PM.
  • Guaranteed FreePlay Monday: Use your card while playing and you are the guaranteed winner of $7 - $10 in FreePlay for each 250 points you earn Monday up to 1,250 points! The FreePlay downloads automatically to your account with accompanying graphics and sounds!
In Our Restaurants
  • Wednesday is Italian Day in Katie’s – three specials served from 11 AM to 10 PM! The Friday and Saturday night special in Katie’s is Roasted Prime Rib & Fried Shrimp for $14.99 served from 4 PM.
  • Thursday’s special in CV Steak is the CV Steak Mix Grill, a combination of our Filet Mignon, a Dijon and molasses Marinated Pork Tenderloin Medallion and Herb Marinated Lamb Chop for $26. This Friday is Elk Tenderloin Tips sautéed with mushrooms and cabernet demi, served over peppered pappardelle pasta for $28. Saturday night’s special is Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sunday's special is King Crab Legs for $28. These specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato – au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked – tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread.
Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Jeff Campbell tonight, After Dark Band Thursday - Saturday, NFL Football Sunday and Monday nights and Steve Lord next Tuesday.  Jeff Campbell is a vocalist,  impassioned  songwriter  and  lifelong  musician . . .  an emotional,  evocative  poet  with  a  rock  lover’s  heart! The high energy of the After Dark Band will have you up and dancing and singing along with the guys in this award-winning band from the Gold Country and Hwy 88 corridor. With a great variety of rock and roll, country, blues and R & B, their “must not miss” show is filled with the songs you know and love and the energy of the group creates a party just waiting for you to join in. Happy Thanksgiving, Craft Fair Here this Weekend, Share Your Christmas Coming, More

Happy Thanksgiving
We join you in giving thanks for all that we enjoy by living and doing business in the incredible Carson Valley! If you were fortunate enough to order one of our Turkey Dinners to Go prior to us selling out, we’ll see you just inside the hotel entrance on Thanksgiving Day at your assigned pickup time between 10 AM and 1 PM. If you have a reservation in CV Steak, enjoy your dinner and thanks for "filling us up" on Thursday! If you’re planning to have Thanksgiving Dinner in Katie’s or at the Jackpot Café in Sharkey’s, you can choose from our regular menu or our traditional Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner Special with all the trimmings for $14.99.  Katie's and Jackpot Café seating is on a first-come basis. Whatever your plans on Thanksgiving Day, please stay safe!

And Then There’s Black Friday
No, the headline is not a lead-in to some off-the-wall, have-to-be-here-at-4 AM promotion we are doing the day after Thanksgiving. We’ll leave it at this: as darkness descends this Friday the skies will definitely not be “black” around the Carson Valley Inn. . . Just drive by our property and you’ll see what we mean!

But First, Free Pumpkin Pie Today
We make this one pretty easy: start by using your INN Club card while playing today. As soon as you earn 50 points today, swing by one of our casino kiosks and swipe your card for a pumpkin pie certificate. Then, before you leave today, stop by Job’s Perk to pick up your pumpkin pie. It’s frozen when we give it to you . . . thaw it out for dinner tomorrow or keep it in the freezer for another holiday season pumpkin pie emergency!

Shenanigans and Antics Coming Soon from this Trio!
And Jumping Ahead Two Weeks to
Share Your Christmas
The annual KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive is coming up on Friday, December 7 in our west parking lot along Highway 395. Yesterday we received the above picture from KTVN which is their “reveal” of the crew we’ll be living with from 6 AM to 6 PM that day:  Ryan Canaday on the left, Angela Schilling in the center and Arianna Bennett on the right. With Zac Mooney as the Minden location producer, there’s no telling what antics will happen as all four have “been here before” and have a history of unusual spontaneous antics! Reminder: all food and cash donated on December 7 serves our locals through the Carson Valley Community Food Closet!

And Then Back to This Weekend
for
Kandy Kane Craft Fair
Lots of different Christmas crafts will be available during the Kandy Kane Craft Fair in our Valley Ballroom this Friday (9 AM to 6 PM), Saturday (9 AM to 6 PM) and Sunday (10 AM to 4 PM).  Admission is free and you’ll have the opportunity to purchase items such as ornaments, lamps, holiday treats, jewelry, scarves, purses, sports items, quilts and much more.  Stock up on gifts and seasonal decorations in one convenient location!

Some Special Days of Note
Cake Day - We Have You Covered
  • 35 Years Ago Today was the official groundbreaking for the Carson Valley Inn on Monday, November 21, 1983. Then Governor Dick Bryant was on hand as was former Governor Bob List and a host of local dignitaries.
  • Today is Tie One On Day which you already knew about if you read our blog two weeks ago. Good reminder to decorate your CVI Apron and wear it to Ladies Night next Wednesday, November 28 for our Apron Decoration Contest! And none of this will make sense if you did NOT read our Blog of November 7, 2018!
  • Friday is Espresso Day. As Mark Helprin put it, “The voodoo priest and all his powders were as nothing compared to espresso, cappuccino, and mocha, which are stronger than all the religions of the world combined, and perhaps stronger than the human soul itself.”  However you interpret this, we can help you enjoy your espresso the way you like it in Job’s Perk open daily from 6 AM! And since Friday is also Eat a Cranberry Day, order a Cranberry Muffin in Job’s Perk to go along with your espresso drink of choice!
  • Monday is Cake Day.  We’ll tempt you with these choices which are all available at the Katie’s Bakery Counter: Chocolate Fudge Cake, Carrot Cake and Pumpkin Cheesecake. These and our many other house-made cakes and pies are a much easier and faster solution to dessert than making it yourself!
Football and Other Sports at the Inn
  • Our Guys Picks were a week of perfection and imperfections.  The amazing Alan went 2 & 0 last week, the other three guys were a pathetic 0 & 6.  These losers couldn’t pick a winner in a one horse race!  Yet, they will keep throwing darts in hopes of hitting the board.  This week Mr. Perfect will look to continue his roll with the Lions +4½ against the Bears and the Redskins +7 ½ at the Cowboys.  Greg looks to restart his winning ways with the Patriots -9½ at the hapless Jets and the Seahwaks +3 ½ at the Panthers.  Steve is taking the Falcons +13 at the Saints and the over 60 in this same NFC East showdown.  Mike is picking two of the biggest rivalry games in college football, the Michigan Wolverines -4 at Ohio St. and Washington St. -3 in the Apple Cup against Washington.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM jackpot has risen to $3,843 for whoever pick this week’s 15 winners or props straight up on a $5 Cards (play as many as you wish). Any ties are split.
  • Monday Night Football Poker Room Grid:  Only one of the $60 squares was claimed earlier this week so it’s +$180 for a total of $320 for this coming Monday’s Titans/Texans game: $80 the first three quarters and $80 for the final score. You must be present to win and any unclaimed winnings roll to the following week. Check the details on this page.
  • Enjoy $2 Domestic Draft Beer during all NFL games at the CVI.
  • On The Board This Week: NCAA and NFL Football, NBA and NCAA Basketball, NHL Hockey, the Sunday Canadian Football League 106th Grey Cup pitting the Ottawa Redblacks against the Calgary Stampeders and Horseracing. Futures include winners of the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship, the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 2019 Stanley Cup and the 2019 NBA Championship.

  • November Scratcher Drawings Tuesday at 6 & 8 PM: Be sure to use your INN Club card whenever playing in the casino and you may just qualify for our monthly scratcher drawings!

A Refreshing New Look and Feel - Plus More Functionality!
106 Down, 43 to Go
If it seems like you're constantly seeing, feeling or sensing something new around the CVI it's probably ‘cause it's true! Sometimes these changes make our blog with a short article . . . like our recently installed new carpeting in the Valley Ballroom and the major makeover in the Poker Room. Sometimes they happen so quickly we miss them ourselves . . . like the new HD A/V Screen/System for those many lunch and seminar presentations in our convention rooms.  Anyway, we recently completed the remodeling of 106 of our hotel rooms. Highlights include new carpet, bedding, bed skirting,  lamps (brighter lighting), larger 43 inch HDTVs, and a plethora of USB ports . . . plus new wallpaper, paint, artwork, chairs, tables and improved bath grab bars. According to Matt Carter our Director of Hotel Operations,  “I think this remodel gives our guests a much brighter, colorful and uplifting atmosphere!”  While this project was going on, our IT folks tore into the walls every few rooms and put in a large network of transmitters that now give upgraded Wi-Fi service – with increased bandwidth – in every hotel room . . . upload and download speeds that rival what some folks have at home! What about the remaining 43 rooms and suites you ask? It's on the schedule for late winter when we finish up this project.

Winter Sporting Clays Weekend
It's actually a pretty long weekend starting on Thursday evening, February 21 with a reception reuniting old friends, meeting new friends and generally celebrating the camaraderie developed over the last 32 years of this February gathering. Stacks of clay targets get most of the laughs over the next two days as the group visits Walker River Resort on Friday and then the private Carson Valley Clays Club on Saturday. The weekend package also includes lunch both days and a Saturday banquet with lots of prizes, a few surprises and plenty of stories (you should have been here the year the clays were coming out at mach 2, upside down and on fire!). Sound interesting? Get all the details at this link and be sure to sign up early as this event does sell out!

Hans Eberbach tonight, Arizona Jones Thursday - Saturday, NFL Football Sunday and Monday nights and John Palmore next Tuesday and Wednesday. Vocalist and songwriter Hans Eberbach sings for the band Joy & Madness, an evolution of vintage soul sound with modern classic pop sensibilities. He also fronts his own band HANS! and the HOT MESS a band that represents his original singer/songwriter/electronic soul work. In a scene so often dominated by technology and gimmicks, Arizona Jones prefers to do it the old fashioned way - live and personal. They put their rockin' spin on classic R&B hits from the 60's and 70's and perform top songs from Aerosmith and Amy Winehouse to Wilson Pickett and ZZ Top . . . and many artists in between.  Musical director for the late "LOUIS ARMSTRONG," John Palmore is an accomplished singer and keyboardist who has worked with Jackie Wilson, Mary Wells, ZZ Hill, Wilson Pickett, Joe Simon, Percy Sledge, The Platters and other "name" artists.

We Had No Idea If It Was a Good Idea
But We Tried it Anyway . . .
What If We Did a Joke Contest?
When our social media folks told us they were going to run a joke contest to help promote this Saturday’s comedy show, we cringed! Anyone who pokes around at all on social media knows you’re likely to see or read just about anything!  One of the criteria was “keep it clean” and, by gosh, everyone did! A variety of jokes were posted on both Facebook and Instagram and the winner – Andy Guerrero – was chosen by random drawing. To read his and some of the other jokes, take a look at the comments on this Facebook posting . . . A few of them are “not bad!” Keep reading our blog (new every Wednesday morning) to stay up-to-date on the pertinent happenings at and near the Carson Valley Inn! If social media is also to your liking, here are the links to our Facebook page, Twitter account, and Instagram account.

“Tie One On” Day Isn’t for Two Weeks
But We’re Getting You Started Tonight!
We know what you’re thinking when we in the casino business say Tie One On Day . . . it’s gotta be about excess drinking.  Turns out it has nothing to do with drinking and unless you happened to have stumbled on this earlier in your life or taken a clue from the picture above, we’re thinking you didn’t see this one coming: Tie One On Day is about aprons!! So here we go with an explanation: at tonight’s Ladies’ Night, Julie and Kim – pictured  above – will be giving out white aprons with the Carson Valley Inn logo. Everyone receiving one of these aprons is invited to decorate it in whatever creative fashion you can imagine . . . And then wear it when you come in for Ladies’ Night on Wednesday, November 28.  Everyone who wears their decorated CVI apron on November 28 will be eligible for prize drawings . . . and we’ll also be giving out prizes for the best decorated aprons. The key is to get started by attending Ladies’ Night tonight and picking up your free CVI apron. And as for Tie One On Day, it’s actually Wednesday, November 21, the day before Thanksgiving. We invite you to click on any of the three links earlier in this article (each is different) to find out more! And whatever you do, don’t giveaway your CVI apron on November 21!

32 Years Ago This Week Here at the CVI
With no advance fanfare or publicity, Retired General Chuck Yeager spoke to the California Flying Farmers annual gathering at the Carson Valley Inn 32 years ago this Thursday!  The attendance for the event was already pushing the limits of the CVI ballroom and the organizers of the meeting insisted on absolutely no advance mention of Yeager's upcoming appearance. At the last minute, a few members of the press were invited in for what turned out to be an incredibly fascinating presentation on the technology of flight followed by the general signing copies of his just-published book, Yeager: An Autobiography. Chuck Yeager was the first man to break the sound barrier on October 14, 1947. 71 years later to the day, on October 14, 2018, spectators at the Aviation Roundup saw Blue Angel #5 fly right to the edge of the sound barrier as he made his 700+ mph Sneak Pass maneuver right down the crowd line just feet above the ground at the Minden-Tahoe Airport.

Cappuccino, Pizza and Chicken Soup
  • Thursday is Cappuccino Day and the weather is finally getting cool enough to enjoy one of these frothy and whipped coffee drinks in Job’s Perk!
  • Monday is Pizza With The Works Except Anchovies Day. This special observance came into existence to protect people who foolishly and naively choose to order their pizza with "the works," never thinking for a moment that there’s a madman out there perfectly willing and capable of putting anchovies on a poor innocent pizza. If you read our blog regularly, you know where we’re heading: toward the pizzas churned out daily in the specially made brick pizza oven at our sister property, Bodines Casino. We asked Bodines manager Tom Forrest how they prevented people from accidentally getting anchovies when ordering a pizza with “the works.” He laughed and simply stated, “can’t happen here, we don’t even have anchovies on the property!”
  • Monday is Chicken Soup for the Soul Day. Ideally we’d be doing a segue into a chicken soup special in Katie’s  . . .  But sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way so try this one:  on Monday we’ll be serving Chicken Tortilla Soup for the Body in Katie's!

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
Patrick Major tonight, Reckless Envy Thursday - Saturday, NFL Football Sunday and Monday nights and Hans Eberbach next Tuesday and Wednesday. Patrick Major’s style includes his own mix of original guitar and vocals combined with rock classics from the last four decades. Whether playing tunes from James Taylor to Dave Matthews, or his own compositions, he displays an unequaled emotion with all. The versatility of Reckless Envy might just bring a heartfelt ballad such as Chris Stapleton’s version of “Tennessee Whiskey,” an authentic version of “Barracuda” by Heart, an entertaining rendition of Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” a guitar driven ZZ Top classic such as “Tush” or a dance song like Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” Vocalist and songwriter Hans Eberbach sings for the band Joy & Madness, an evolution of vintage soul sound with modern classic pop sensibilities. He also fronts his own band HANS! and the HOT MESS a band that represents his original singer/songwriter/electronic soul work.
