Sister's Comedy this Week, Food Drive Next

Sister About to Get Out of Control!
Sister's Christmas Catechism / The Mystery of the Magi's Gold is nuttier than "The Nutcracker," more 'kicks' than "Radio City's Christmas Spectacular" and funnier than "A Christmas Carol."  Don't miss out on the holiday comedy hijinks as Sister goes head-on with many of the truths and old wives tales about nuns and how they terrorized the students back in the “old days.”  She also tackles many of the idiosyncrasies of church in general in a way that will have you laughing and, unless you are a proponent of participation trophies, not be offended! The two nights of Sister’s Christmas Catechism  are this Thursday and Friday - come either night as the shows are (supposedly) the same. Tickets are $22 and are available at the hotel desk or you can order by phone at 775-783-6606 and pick ‘em up at the door.  

Food Drive Almost Here . . . so the crew at Channel 2 huddled in front of a studio camera (no smartphone selfies for this bunch) and issued the above video invitation to the KTVN Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive coming up on Friday, December 9 from 6 AM to 6 PM at the entrance to our RV Park. Santa will be arriving by Care Flight helicopter (weather permitting) at 9:30 AM and hanging around until mid-afternoon, East Fork Fire Protection District will have various pieces of equipment and personnel on hand throughout the day, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office brings over some of their specialty vehicles, and volunteers from the Nevada National Guard, United States Marines and Nevada Department of Corrections will be helping out. All money and food donated locally goes to the Carson Valley Community Food ClosetAnd all blood donated (yep, there’s a Blood Drive from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) goes to help those who need this often-life-saving assistance during the upcoming holiday season. Please stop by!

Let’s Talk Christmas:

  • Christmas Parties are Making a Comeback in our improving economy and you will see quite a few of them during December in our Ballroom space, Picon Room and the Private Dining Room in CV Steak. We bring this up because there may be still be room for your company if you don’t need a prime night . . . and now would be a good time to think about what you might want to do for next year as those prime nights go fast.   • Christmas Decorations are all up here at the CVI and at our sister properties Sharkey’s and Bodines..  Eileen and her crew did all-new decorations in the Casino and Katie's this year . . . we hope you’ll check out the holiday spirit in all three properties!
  • A Toys for Tots box is located inside our hotel entrance – feel free to drop off a new unwrapped toy on your way in to check out the decorations.
  • A Christmas Village and more are depicted in our Candy Cane Lane drive-by Christmas display which you can enjoy nightly by pulling in to the entrance between our big sign and the Carson Valley Market. Tune your radio to 89.9 and listen to music while you watch the elves and other characters!

Sister Explains How It Is, Thanksgiving Weekend at the Inn, A Helicopter in our Parking Lot and More

A Nun - In a Casino?? Don't worry, it's OK as Sister explains in the video above. Sister’s Christmas Catechism is filled with humor that appeals to every denomination. If you happen to be connected in any way to Catholicism, you will especially appreciate the “hey, that’s too close to home” humor in these shows. The “older” generation may have experienced some of the situations and “nun torture” first hand. The younger generation has certainly heard about such “Sisters of Terror” war stories – they fall into the “when I was a kid I walked uphill both ways to school in the driving snow” category! Whatever your denomination, we guarantee you’ll see plenty of humor in Sister’s Christmas Catechism,  two nights of comedy on Thursday and Friday, December 1 and 2. The show is the same both nights – at least it starts out with that intention. Tickets are $22 and are available at the hotel desk or you can order by phone at 775-783-6606.

Every year, this event takes on a life of its own and it’s all for the good of our community, specifically for the many Carson Valley recipients of the services offered by the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. And if you’re one of the “regulars” who help out whenever we have a blood drive here at the CVI, you can schedule your donation time now.  Come on out, make a food or monetary contribution, and join in the spontaneity!

  • Groundbreaking on the original (and much smaller) Carson Valley Inn was 33 years ago this past weekend!
  • This sequence of numbers has a name: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, and so forth. And today is the day the world honors the man who brought this to our attention in 1202! Might also be a soothing (and lucky) rhythm you can replicate in your mind while trying to hit our Penny Progressive Jackpot!

Share Your Christmas - But Some Catechism & Thanksgiving First, Please!

Share Your Christmas at the CVI on Friday, December 9!  Hard to believe the annual KTVN Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive is only three weeks away!  Raley’s Gardnerville is making donations easy with their $10 grocery bags. Channel 2 has information on their website and so does the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, the recipient of all the Minden location donations. What can you bring? It’s all on the list on this page. Who is anchoring the event? KTVN’s Arianna Bennett, Ryan Canaday and Zac Mooney who have all been at our location before and certainly “know the drill!” Join us on December 9 from 6 AM to 6 PM.

What the Heck is Sister’s Christmas Catechism? It's "CSI: Bethlehem" in a holiday mystery/comedy extravaganza from the authors of Late Nite Catechism. Join the fun (or be part of it!) as Sister takes on the mystery that has intrigued historians throughout the ages - whatever happened to the Magi's gold?  We know Mary used the frankincense and myrrh as a sort of potpourri - they were in a barn after all. And now, 2000 years later, thanks to the recent passing of State Question 2, it can be more than potpourri!  Anyway, back on point:  Retelling the story of the nativity, as only Sister can, this hilarious holiday production has Sister employing her own scientific tools and, assisted by a local choir as well as a gaggle of audience members, creating a living nativity unlike any you've ever seen. With gifts galore and bundles of laughs, Sister’s Christmas Catechism  is a “Howling Day of Obligation” you won’t want to miss!  Sister’s Christmas Catechism runs on two consecutive nights, Thursday and Friday, December 1 and 2. Speaking of Nativity Scenes: Turns out Sister’s advance list of demands and props is extensive (what are we supposed to do, slap her hands with a ruler and say no?). These two we don’t have on hand so, if you can help us by loaning us the following for a few days (Nov. 29 – Dec 3), Sister promises to bless you with a few tickets for her show: One (1) Small Nativity Set.  A painted set is preferred and, please note, it is best that it not be an expensive set. • One (1) LARGE Lawn Nativity Set.  Let us know by sending us an email and we’ll have one of the altar boys give you a call.

Dump Him or Her, Choose Us! We're willing to bet most of our readers didn't know this Thursday is Unfriend Day. Heck, we'll even bet most of our readers, including us until we found this, didn't even know there was such a day! And if you can honestly say you have heard of it, did you also know that comedian Jimmy Kimmel founded Unfriend Day in 2014?   • Both CV Steak and Katie’s are serving their regular menu plus Thanksgiving Specials on Thursday, November 24. Due to the holiday, on Thanksgiving Day the following will not be available: the Thursday Burgundy Beef Tips special in Katie’s and the Sunset Menu and Sushi Special in CV Steak.
  • If you would rather have us do the cooking and you and the family dine at home, we are offering a limited number of our special Thanksgiving Dinner to Go for up to Ten by advance order. This feast includes a fully-cooked 18-20 pound turkey plus all the trimmings - mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans amandine, cranberry sauce, a pumpkin pie, rolls and butter all for $89.00 plus tax. Orders (until we sell out)must be placed by Tuesday, November 22 at noon . . . But we do have a limit to how many orders we can take so please don’t delay.
  • Pumpkin Pies and Pumpkin Cheesecakes are made daily in our bakery through December. Place your order for these or any of the goodies on our "take 'em home" bakery menu at the Katie's Bakery counter.

Dead Girl Walking is one of 14 songs in TG Sheppard's Legendary Friends and Country Duets album featuring duets with artists such as George Jones, the Oak Ridge Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lorrie Morgan, Ricky Skaggs, Merle Haggard, Engelbert Humperdinck, Willie Nelson, Conway Twitty and more. What makes this song so special to TG? It’s a duet with his wife Kelly Lang, his special guest at the TG Sheppard Concert this Saturday night in the CVI Valley Ballroom!  A recent inductee into the North American Country Music Hall Of Fame, Kelly Lang's career continues to grow at a rapid pace. She was recently invited by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees to perform "Islands In The Stream" in honor of Kenny Rogers, at his recent Country Music Hall Of Fame induction. Kelly and Barry also performed together at the Grand Ole Opry. Kelly has performed with, and had her songs recorded by, some of music's biggest legends spanning throughout all genres of music. She has made numerous appearances on the biggest music shows in television history and her songs can be heard on radio waves throughout the world. Every Veteran and Active Military Person Has a Story – some have many. Some are light hearted – some are gut wrenching. We invite you to share these stories with each other and with us at our annual Free Veterans Day Spaghetti Lunch this Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Valley Ballroom! This is the sixth year for the Carson Valley Inn's free Veterans Day Spaghetti Lunch which includes fresh tossed salad with choice of ranch, Italian or thousand island dressings; spaghetti with choice of marinara sauce or Bolognese (meat sauce); garlic bread and assorted cookies.  The bond of service to our country brings hundreds of neighbors and community residents to this event each year. Some have not met but do so at this lunch. Others have formed friendships at this event in previous years. You all definitely have commonality in your patriotism and we look forward to seeing you Friday!  Simply present your military ID and lunch for you and your guest is on the Carson Valley Inn!  Don't have your ID? Just tell us about your service to our country or give us "that look."  We’ll know and we'll welcome you right in!

Even a Busy Elf Deserves a Rest! She moves at “Mach 2 with Her Hair on Fire” so don't get in her way! We're talking about Eileen Knox, our mild-mannered (sort of) Executive Office Manager most of the year, and faster-than-the-speed-of-light Christmas decorator during November. Eileen and her "helpers" from our Engineering department will be scurrying around the Inn setting up interior decorations over the next few weeks as they turn up the Christmas spirit for full effect by Thanksgiving weekend. As for this picture, even the busiest of elves sometimes hides in a remote back-of-the-house stairwell just to catch a brief rest!

Sometimes it Pays to Scream and Yell! And as you remember us reporting in this blog in October, screaming and yelling are the quiet part of the annual Bunko for Breast Cancer event held in our Shannon Ballroom each Fall. The many volunteer employees at our local GE plant who produce this event reported earlier this week they raised $15,785 for local breast cancer causes this year. In our opinion, that is something to scream and yell about!

  • CV Steak and Katie’s will be serving their regular menu plus Thanksgiving Specials on Thursday, November 24. Due to the holiday, on Thanksgiving Day the following will not be available: the Thursday Burgundy Beef Tips special in Katie’s and the Sunset Menu and Sushi Special in CV Steak.
  • If you would rather have us do the cooking so you and the family can dine at home, we are offering a special Thanksgiving Dinner to Go for up to Ten by advance order. This feast includes a fully-cooked 18-20 pound turkey plus all the trimmings - mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans amandine, cranberry sauce, a pumpkin pie, rolls and butter all for just $89.00 plus tax. Orders must be placed by Tuesday, November 22 at noon . . . But we do have a limit to how many orders we can take so please don’t delay.
  • Seems like nothing is more “Thanksgiving” than pumpkin pie, so here’s a reminder: Pumpkin Pies and Pumpkin Cheesecakes are made daily in our bakery through December. Place your order for these or any of the goodies on our "take 'em home" bakery menu at the Katie's Bakery counter.

    • This Week:  Allen said, “Definitely not my Eagles.” He is picking the favored Steelers (-2½) over the Cowboys. Mike decided to come out from his “hide behind the obscure games” stance and likes underdog Arkansas (+7) to cover or beat LSU and favored Stanford (-3½ ) over Oregon. 

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  The RYE Brothers fill our stage through Saturday night, we show NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and George Pickard is here next Tuesday and Wednesday. The Rye Brothers are a “power-pop” country act, mixing contemporary country music and rock n’ roll guitar driven songs. Led by Paul Justin & Justin Foutz, who trade off on the lead vocals and guitar licks. Cheaters, a Campaign Cash Stop, Chocolate, Thanksgiving, More


Cheaters In a Casino??? Actually it's just a song about cheaters - Last Cheater's Waltz is just one of the #1 songs from TG Sheppard’s “Three Quarters Lonely” album . . . and this great cheating song in classic country waltz style is just one of the many hits TG will be performing during his special acoustic concert in the Valley Ballroom on Saturday night, November 12.  TG is bringing his special guest and wife Kelly Lang and tickets are just $25 at the hotel desk or call 775-783-6606. A Confusing Confluence of Special Days: We're not sure if or how this all ties together but this Thursday is Men Make Dinner Day, Housewife's Day and Sandwich Day. We read through the information in each of these three links and, frankly, we're quite confused. Not sure if a sandwich is allowable under the Men Make Dinner Day rules . . . And if the man is actually the "housewife" in a particular situation, it really gets confusing. Our suggestion: forget the “rules” and come in to Katie's for lunch (have one of our sandwiches) and come back for dinner in CV Steak for the Sushi Special or whatever helps you feel you’ve covered all three “Days” in an acceptable (to you) manner!

If you were here Monday and wondered who won the Halloween Costume Contest: First place daytime winner was Mundi Hamilton who was dressed as a gypsy.  Second place for daytime was Cara Hallert who was creatively dressed as a piece of luggage.  For our evening contest, first place winner was Jackie Halter dressed as a Scarecrow and second place honors went to Alexis Turner who was dressed as a Zombie.

Mike picked two under-the-radar games and took favorite Kansas State (-6½) over Iowa State and Connecticut to cover against East Carolina (-7). Well . . . Kansas State won, but only by 5 (almost, Mike) and East Carolina whooped Connecticut . . .  so both picks go in Mike’s “that’s why I don’t quit my day job” column!
    • This Week:  Allen likes the Raiders (-1) to cover and beat the Broncos and “his” underdog Eagles (+2½) to cover or beat the Giants. Mike is still sticking to the college games and picking underdogs Arkansas Razorbacks (+5) over the #10 Florida Gators and Iowa Hawkeyes (+7½) over the #18 Penn State Nittany Lions.
