Temptations Saturday - in Both TJ's Corral and Our Bakery Counter

The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards
Saturday in TJ's Corral caption
I Wish It Would Rain In TJ’s Corral Saturday Night! Do we really want it to rain Saturday night during the The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards Concert? Of course not – and it won’t! “I Wish It Would Rain” will be one of the 20+ top-ten hits of the Temptations you just might experience in TJ’s Saturday. This popular Motown legend also had 20 top-ten albums, numerous TV appearances, and songs that are embedded in the memories of anyone who listened to pop or R&B music in the mid-sixties through the nineties and – thanks to long-time member Dennis Edwards – even into today. Edwards was the first new Temptation to enter the group after their "classic five" heyday, when he replaced David Ruffin as lead singer in July 1968. With his rougher gospel-hewn vocals, Edwards led the group through its psychedelic, funk, and disco periods. Two of the Temptations songs he appears on, "Cloud Nine" (1968) and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" (1972), won Grammy Awards. Edwards was the lead singer on many of the other Temptations hits including “I Cant’ Get Next To you”, “Ball of Confusion”, “Psychedelic Shack” and “My Girl”. Dennis Edwards has received 7 Grammy Awards, 14 Gold Records, has sold over 100,000,000 recordings worldwide. Nostalgia, history and memories of years many of us remember well . . . all on stage in TJ's Corral this Saturday at 8 p.m.  Don't miss it!

Next Up in TJ’s Corral
The Eli Young Band and Randy Houser concerts are next in TJ’s Corral. The guys in the Eli Young Band seem anxious to get here as you see in the video above. They even got “pretty darn close” on the correct pronunciation of Nevada! Tickets start at $59 for both concerts and they are available on our website, at the hotel desk, or by calling 775-783-6606.

TJ's Corral and Valley Ballroom Country Alumni all on One Stage Tonight
More than a dozen country legends are showing their support to the families of the recently slain Dallas police officers in a Stars Behind the Stars benefit concert in Fort Worth tonight. Among those who have performed for audiences at the CVI are Tanya Tucker, the Oak Ridge Boys, Collin Raye, Johnny Lee, Moe Bandy and T.G. Sheppard, who will also serve as host of the event.

Imagine Yourself on a a 180-Day Around the World Cruise
180-Day Around the World Cruise – Want In?
Imagine spending six months on a luxury cruise ship visiting virtually every exotic port of call in the free world! And imagine doing this in a penthouse suite with 24-hour butler service, unlimited access to the private terrace in the spa club, a laptop computer with wireless Internet access for your use,  all your meals and much more! You could jump on a reservation for the January 6, 2017 departure with Oceania Cruises  tomorrow if you won the CVI Penny Progressive Jackpot at its current level of $94,500+ (as of last night).  Wait, you want to bring your spouse along? Hmmm, better hit that jackpot twice or you’ll have to move down to an inside stateroom so you both can go! As a reminder, our Penny Progressive Jackpot will hit here at the Carson Valley Inn . . . it’s not tied to any other casino!

Catch this "power-pop” country act in the Cabaret Lounge thru Saturday
Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: The Rye Brothers are in house tonight through Saturday and Patrick Major takes over Sunday through Wednesday.  The Rye Brothers are a “power-pop” country act, mixing contemporary country music and rock n’ roll guitar driven songs. Led by founders Paul Justin & Justin Foutz, who trade off on the lead vocals and guitar licks, the Southern California based quartet is rounded out by a solid rhythm section consisting of Jacob Delott (bass, backing vocals) and Jeff Sorenson (drums, backing vocals).   Click here for the upcoming lineup of free entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.

Temptations, Lexus for Pennies, Superheros and More

My Girl, Just My Imagination, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Ain't Too Proud to Beg, The Way You Do the Things You Do - these are just some of the many Temptations hits from the late sixties and early seventies you’ll hear when The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards takes the stage in TJ's Corral on Saturday, July 30. Can you guess which three of these made the top six in a Reader's Poll of the Ten Greatest  Motown Songs by Rolling Stone?  Reserved seating tickets are $39 and $49 and are available on our website, at the hotel desk, or by calling 775-783-6606. For even more of a trip down memory lane, check out this article about the upcoming Temptations Review concert posted by our friends at Tahoe OnStage! Additional 2016 Concerts in TJ’s Corral include The Eli Young Band and Randy Houser!

Picture this . . . you come out of Katie’s and were given $7.77 in change after paying your bill. You take it as a “sign,” make a right turn, and head to the Penny Progressive to play the $5 bill.  You push the button for your 5th “max coin” bet at 90 coins and all the "Triple Red Hot 3X" symbols line up. The bells start ringing, lights start flashing, the jackpot stops progressing and before you register the reality of the moment the person next to you shouts, “%$#*&!! - you just won the jackpot!” People start showing up and soon you’re faced with the decision we’d all welcome, “Will that be cash or check?”  Fast forward about a week. You took the check, paid 20% Federal Income Tax (sorry, one of the harsh realities) and drove up to Dolan Lexus in your old car. A couple of hours later you drove home in a brand new and totally loaded 2016 Lexus RX 350 F Sport. You paid for the car, registration, sales tax, transfer fee, first year of insurance and all that other nonsense . . . . and still had enough left over to stop by the CVI and buy drinks for all who would stop to listen to your story.  Sound farfetched? According to our friends at Dolan Lexus it’s entirely possible based on the Progressive Jackpot of over $87,000 as of last night.  Want in?

You just had to be there! If a picture is worth 1000 words, then the video photo collage above from the Clay Walker concert has a five-figure word value! Clay's showmanship was as dynamic and exciting as we've seen at any of our concerts in TJ's Corral . . . and our thanks go out to the many fans in attendance who posted their Clay Walker Concert pictures on our Facebook page.

Superman, Batman and Spiderman Walk Up to the Silver Dollar Bar in Sharkey's Casino and order one of the many draft beers on tap. Soon their presence attracts some of the fairer sex including Wonder Woman, Super Girl, Bat Girl and, although not apparent to all, The Invisible Woman. If this sounds like we are building a verbal picture of a comic book version of the bar scene from a Star Wars movie, it isn't.  It's actually a somewhat embellished projection of what might actually happen this Thursday when the monthly Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk in Gardnerville takes on a Superhero Theme.  Be sure to register starting at 4:30 PM at either the Town of Gardnerville Offices (across the street and ‘bout a block down from Sharkey’s) or Big Daddy’s Bike Shop near the Minden/Gardnerville line.

Not Just Another Cow in the Field with Mountains in the Background Picture! Matt Carter, our Director of Hotel Operations, captured this picture in the calm before the storm of our Carson Valley Inn/Bodines Casino/Sharkey’s Casino Employee Picnic last week. It was a full and festive day with hundreds of employees and their families enjoying eight hours of food, games, rides, music and more. We also throw a creative Christmas Party for all our employees with gifts for all the kids (hundreds of 'em), crafts, pictures, and quite the holiday buffet! Add in the generous benefits program (getting harder to find these days, especially in a Casino) and you'll find that working at our properties is not just another job in a casino!  Here’s a great way for you and your family to get in on our upcoming picnics and Christmas Parties . . and for you to enjoy working for a creative and successful owner: check out the job opportunities available on this webpage or just stop by the HR office “just down the hall” from our hotel registration desk. And we do know that the picture depicts a bull rather than a cow.

Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: Bill Wharton is on stage tonight, the After Dark Band takes over on Thursday through Saturday and Jonny Smokes is here Sunday through Tuesday. The high energy of the After Dark Band will have you up and dancing and singing along with this lively group of guys from the “greater Rio Vista” area! Their repertoire is filled with the songs you know and love and they seem to always create an instant party in the CVI Cabaret Lounge.  While carrying the label of "One Man Band," this moniker fails miserably to even begin to define the high tech and energetic live experience of a Jonny Smokes show. Turned loose upon a stage filled with beautiful instruments and modern equipment, Jonny enthusiastically delivers a high tech one man exhibition as he consistently performs over 150 solo shows every year in the western United States and throughout Europe. Click here for the upcoming lineup of free entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge.

Clay Walker, Sporting Clays, 2 Highlighted Golf Courses, More

Clay or Clays – We’ve Got ‘em Both!
Clay Walker live in concert in TJ's Corral this Friday  . . .  and Sporting Clays at Walker River Resort in three weeks - it kind of ties together and after all, this is a blog and that gives us license to weave subjects together as we see fit!

  • Clay Walker brings a full vault of country treasures including 4 RIAA Platinum Albums, 2 Certified Gold Albums and 11 #1 hit singles.  Clay's effect on his fans was recently captured by one of our TJ’s Corral Facebook Page followers who so aptly stated about his hit “Fall” (video above) which reached number 5 on the U.S. country singles chart, "Fall is my favorite song. I heard it and I could of sworn it was written for me and what I was going through. He became my favorite.”  Our friends at Tahoe Onstage provide more insight into Clay in this article which includes a link to Clay’s 2015 single, Right Now.  Reserved seating tickets for this Friday's Clay Walker Concert are $39 and $49 and are available online, at the hotel desk or by calling 775-783-6606.  Additional 2016 Concerts in TJ’s Corral include The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards, The Eli Young Band and Randy Houser!
  • As for the Sporting Clays, we still have a few spots open in our Summer Fun Shoot. Unlike our February Shooting Weekend, this one is limited in size and includes a cocktail gathering on Sunday evening, sporting clays on Monday at Walker River Resort  and Tuesday at Carson Valley Clays, lunch both days, and a family-style Basque dinner at the JT Restaurant & Bar on Tuesday night. All the details are at this link and we hope you’ll check it out and join us!
Great Golf Course News!
This week we shine a spotlight on two of the dozen golf courses played by the 100+ golf groups that headquarter at the Carson Valley Inn each year.

Knaughty Pine Bar at Genoa Ranch
  • The Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes recently opened their new Knaughty Pine Bar and new Pro Shop in a much more accessible location just east of the original and now-empty large clubhouse. Head Golf Professional Chris Detsch, PGA, and his staff have nestled into this cheerful new home and the renewed energy is contagious!  The Ranch Course is home to both the Friday practice round and the Saturday competition round for our annual Mixed Scramble which is coming up on the weekend after Labor Day. We hope you'll consider joining in on what has to be our most fun-filled golf event of the year! The two Genoa Lakes courses continue to be our most-often-requested and we enjoy a great working relationship with the staff, ownership and, unfortunately for this writer, that pesky forced carry on hole #12 at the Lakes Course!
  • Meanwhile, Thunder Canyon Golf Course has been sold and is now operating as
Hole #16 at Toiyabe Golf Club
Toiyabe Golf Club. The club’s new owner, Stan Jaksick, former president of the acclaimed Montrêux Golf and Country Club in Reno will be transitioning Toiyabe from a private club to a semi-private club - opening it up to public play while still accommodating the existing members. Fortunately for us and the many groups that stay with us and play this course, they will continue to be very group friendly. A new fleet of golf carts is already in place and a special crew has been retained to start on a list of on-course enhancements to the already top-shelf track!
  • If you are part of a group of golfers and would like to look into one of our group packages, we're booking now for the remainder of 2016 and all of 2017. Hop on the phone and call Greg Enholm, PGA our Golf Sales Manager at 775-783-6615. Greg will be glad to match your needs with our services. He makes it really easy by arranging the hotel rooms, tee times, group dinners and more . . . including, if you ask nice, a tip or two on your swing!
Someone Will Win this Progressive Here at CVI
Pokémon Go Creatures or Pennies? Someone asked us if the Carson Valley Inn was a “location” for any of the “creatures”  or experiences connected with the new Pokemon Go online game released just a little over a week ago. Our answer: Heck, we don’t know – we’re still trying to figure out how the Golden State Warriors blew a 3 – 1 lead to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA basketball finals!  Our advice: let those who so choose spend their time using their smartphone to chase the Pokemon Go virtual reality while you concentrate on the Penny Progressive slots along our South wall because the jackpot is now over $80,000!! Oh, seems Bodines Casino is a hiding place for some of those virtual critters and Sharkey's is a Pokemon gym . . . but remember this is coming from someone still fixated on the now-history NBA Championships!

Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: Jonathon “JB” Barton is on stage tonight, the Voodoo Cowboys take over for the weekend on Thursday through Saturday and Bill Wharton is here Sunday through Wednesday. Playing together since 2009, the Voodoo Cowboys have appeared at most major casino venues in Nevada.  Not the “cryin' in your beer” type country band, they are the life of the party with their dance-inducing, hard drivin' country music and rock n roll. The group has entertained crowds on numerous stages around the world, as well as sharing stages with such rock and country stars as David Nail, Little Texas, Ron Keel, Toby Keith and many more. Imagine a Screen 15 Times the Size of an IPhone 6! We’ll take the guesswork out of it for you – that would be about 84 inches in diameter and from top to bottom it would be almost 6 feet tall. Want to see what it looks like? Check out the new Behemoth sized Buffalo Stampede slot machine that grabs your attention quickly as you first walk in the front Casino door. It’s a penny machine (remember, that doesn’t mean you can actually play penny coins) with a $27,000+ jackpot and climbing. The video above (check the size of the man's head, lower left,  vs. the screen size) depicts only a minor stampede . . . the bonus round stampede definitely gets your attention when an almost life-size buffalo comes at you in full “Snort” mode with bass-enhanced sound, rumbling you in the over-sized bench that easily seats two! Speaking of penny slots . . . keep an eye on the “come on it’s gotta hit soon” Penny Progressive Jackpot along the Hwy 395 casino wall – now over $75,000!
