First Concert Saturday, Summer Fun Clay Shoot, Graduation, More

Granger Smith or Earl Dibbles, Jr?
Find Out Saturday Night
Granger Smith Concert Saturday! The kickoff to our TJ’s Corral season is Saturday when the Granger Smith Tour rolls into Minden . . . with the Frankie Ballard Concert following just 5 nights later on Thursday, June 2.  Tickets for these and some of our other 2016 TJ’s Corral Concerts are available either online or at our hotel desk.  This being the first concert of the year we’d like to answer some of the commonly asked questions and remind concertgoers of our few guidelines:  If you have tickets to pick up, the Box Office opens at the TJ's Corral entrance at 4 p.m. on concert nights. Our TJ’s concerts go on rain or shine, warm or cool. The desert weather tends to cool down as the night goes on so bring what you need when you come in ‘cause there’s no re-admittance into the concert area after your ticket has been scanned. Also, a friendly reminder that pets, lawn chairs, drones, and outside food/drinks may not be brought into TJ’s Corral . . . and both smoking and vaping are allowed in designated areas only. If you have questions, or need handicap assistance with seating, please call us prior to 4 p.m. on concert nights at 775-783-7766.

Finally – A Summer Shoot! Many of the clay shooting enthusiasts who have attended our February shooting outing over the years have asked us to put something together in the summer. So, we have our first Summer Fun Shoot ready for sign ups! The event is August 7 – 9 with 300 targets spread over two days of shooting, a reception on arrival night and a traditional family style Basque dinner at the JT on the final night. The details are at this link . . . check it out and join us!

Lots happening this weekend: In addition to the Granger Smith Concert on Saturday night we also have quite a bit going on in the casino this weekend. Friday drawings are at 8 and 10 p.m. plus Inn Club members earn 4X points from 4 p.m. to midnight.  Saturday we’ll have 70 hot seat drawings between 2 and 8 p.m. with a guaranteed $100 winner every time – that’s $7,000 total for the day. Sunday, the May Grand Prize Drawings in our $100,000 Giveaway are at 3, 5 and 7 p.m. with $5,000 Guaranteed!  Monday is the final Salute to Our Troops kiosk swipe - $1 for every INN Club member swipe will be donated to The Nevada Military Support Alliance. We wrap up the month on Tuesday with our May Scratcher Giveaways at 6 and 8 p.m. with the chance to win up to $5000!

Beatles Tribute in Minden Park Friday Evening
Beatles in the Park Friday: Carson Valley Inn has been helping sponsor the GE Family Concert Series since its inception many years ago. The first of five concerts on the 2016 schedule is this Friday night in Minden Park when Paperback Writer – a Tribute to the Beatles performs starting at 6:30 PM. Produced by the Douglas County Parks and Recreation department, the concerts are free to the public thanks to the generous support of GE, the CVI and the many other Carson Valley businesses that contribute annually to preserve our small town heritage and atmosphere.

Graduation Week – Who’s Turning 50? Congratulations to all of the graduates of  Aspire Academy High School (tonight in TJ’s corral) and Douglas High School (Thursday night at the DHS Athletic Field).  We wish you the best of success and happiness as you enter the real world. Enjoy life every minute as it goes by fast . . . consider this: the energetic high school graduates in 1984 who turned 18 that summer and were the first to have jobs at the Carson Valley Inn when it opened in early August . . . are turning 50 this summer! Were you one of those 1984 DHS graduates who worked at the CVI in the summer of 1984? Post a note in the comments section below and let us know what you’re up to these days!

Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: Jonathon “JB” Barton entertains tonight, the Voodoo Cowboys take the stage Thursday thru Saturday, The Nighthawks are here Sunday and Monday and John Palmore returns Tuesday and Wednesday.  Playing together since 2009, the Voodoo Cowboys have appeared at most major casino venues in Nevada.  Not the cryin' in your beer type country band, they are the life of the party with their dance-inducing, hard drivin' country music and rock n roll. The group has rocked crowds on numerous stages around the world, as well as sharing stages with such rock and country stars as David Nail, Little Texas, Ron Keel, Toby Keith and many more. The Nighthawks perform a wide variety of styles covering artists from Alan Jackson to ZZ Top, including great classic country tunes and expert performances of classic rock songs.

May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month. We are acutely aware of the danger that wildfire presents to the residents of many areas of Carson Valley and our surrounding communities – especially Lake Tahoe to the east and Alpine County and the extended Sierra Range to the south. We have partnered with the multi-agency committee that sponsors this movement the last few years and are pleased to do our part again this May. Please take a few moments to visit the Living With Fire website.

Wine and Hamburgers – How’s That Work for You?
  • Today is National Wine Day - not to be confused with National Drink Wine Day which is in February. We're starting to think all it takes is an INN Club Card and the influence of a couple of glasses of wine for anyone to declare their own "National" day of just about anything. To pursue your dream of infamy, we suggest you slip into CV Steak, pick one or two selections from the wine list, sit back and start planning your very own "National Day!"
  • Saturday is Hamburger Day. Not being inclined to reinvent the wheel this week, we’ll go with the following which we had in this blog last year on Hamburger Day . . . Because it all but still stands and it’s all good information and it represents our  recommendations in order from traditional to more adventurous: The Bodines Restaurant Double Cheese Burger with beer-battered French fries is our north sister property's biggest seller.  The Cheese Burger is also Katie's biggest seller, but we suggest stepping it up a notch with the Smoke House Burger(double bacon, cheddar cheese and hickory BBQ sauce). Next up the gastrointestinal delight ladder are two from Sharkey's Jackpot Café: The Drunken Burger (includes one well shot or domestic draft beer) and the Volcano Burger (stuffed with ghost pepper cheese and chorizo, topped with more ghost pepper cheese and spicy secret sauce). And for a most-un-traditional and "bet-you-can't-eat-the-whole-thing" experience, go for the Gourmet Hamburger (aka The French Disaster) in CV Steak.

Granger Smith Closer, Progressive Slot Attitude, Wine Walk, More

Granger Smith (r) and lead guitar player
Todd Howard (l)  having too much fun!
Granger Almost Here – Clay Walker Tickets Now Available! What type of person says “Drinking rum before 10 am makes you a pirate, not an alcoholic.” and also utters “Every day be thankful for the nights that turn into mornings, friends that turn into family and dreams that turn into reality.”? It’s Granger Smith, and his current tour is inching closer to the Carson Valley where the Granger Smith Concert kicks off  the 2016 TJ’s Corral Concert Schedule on Saturday, May 28. And here’s even more concert news (it pays to check our new blog every Wednesday morning): Tickets went on sale this morning for the Clay Walker Concert in TJ’s on Friday, July 15.

Ready for you to Hit the Jackpot!
How Progressive Are You? Hold on, we’re not talking politics here (we just don’t) – we’re talking about Progressive Jackpots. Would you believe almost half of our slots have progressive Jackpots of some type? Guess that makes us pretty progressive, huh!!
  • Our bank of Penny Progressive slots garners a lot of attention as the jackpot climbs – as it is doing now at over $49,000! No other casino is tied to this one so the jackpot will be won by somebody playing right here at the CVI. Sure would be great to have it hit this coming Monday as that just happens to be Lucky Penny Day.
  • Most if not all of our video poker slot banks have a progressive jackpot game option. Popular spots are the CV Steak and Casino bars (both offer a dollar and a quarter progressive) and any one of a handful plus other locations in the casino.
  • We also have a number of “singular” slots that have their own progressive jackpot and some of them are at respectable levels. A few of these are Gold Pays ($9,000+), Gold Stacks ($8,800+) and Fa-Dao-Le ($10,000+). The beauty of these and our other “one-of” progressive slots: the jackpot can’t be won by the person playing next to you!
  • Some of the other progressive jackpots are hooked to 4-5 machines at the CVI. Examples are the Wave Machine, Lightning Link ($11,000+), Penny Train ($9,900+), Hotshots ($34,000+), 88 Fortunes $15,000+), Buffalo Stampede ($25,000+) and Quick Hit Platinum ($9,900+)
  • The statewide jackpots produce the really big bucks – some enough to give you reason to really celebrate Be a Millionaire Day this Friday. These “system” machines are tied together with a number of other casinos throughout the state and they can be “hit” at any participating casino. We’ve got the IGT “majors” (click links for current amounts) including Megabucks or the Wheel of Fortune progressives ($.25 Jackpot or $1 Jackpot or $5 Jackpot) plus the Aristocrat Big Bang Theory currently sitting at over $540,000!
  • One more thing: all of these jackpots reset to a lower number when they “hit.”  And, with our luck, one of ‘em may have hit after we finished writing this yesterday!
Sign up for the Wine Walk at the Town of
Gardnerville Offices or Big Daddy’s Bike Shop
Wine Walk Thursday: The first 2016 Thirtsy Third Thursday Wine Walk is this Thursday evening with a patriotic theme and we invite all the wine walkers to wander into Sharkey’s as you are passing by and show us your “red, white and blue.”  Sharkey’s Silver Dollar Bar is almost within arm’s reach of the highway 395 sidewalk entrance to Sharkey’s . . . A great place to fill your commemorative glass with the beverage of your choice! Be sure to register at either the Town of Gardnerville Offices or Big Daddy’s Bike Shop starting at 4:30 PM and enjoy the various stops as the activities continue until 7:30 pm.

Greg can swing you through a great
outing for your golf group!
Today is Golf Day - and we hope you are either playing golf today or planning a golf outing to the Carson Valley! The Carson Valley Inn is headquarters to over 100 golf groups every year ranging in size from 8 to over 100. We make it easy by setting up your hotel rooms and your social functions and – most  importantly – arranging your starting times for as many days of golf as your group would like.  Find out more about what we can do for your group by calling Greg Enholm at 775-783-6615. If it’s golf related, Greg has either done it, seen it, or heard about it! And if you ask Greg what the weather will be like on the day your group is planning to be here, just watch out 'cause he's likely to give you his standard answer, which just happens to be true today: 75 and sunny!

Join Us in Thanking . . .
  • Saturday is Armed Forces Day. We salute and thank the 1,300,000+ active members and 811,000+ people in the reserve components of our military branches: the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. We appreciate the safety you provide for the residents of our country!
  • During May we are showing our support for the Nevada Military Support Alliance by donating $1 for everyone who swipes his or her player card at the casino kiosk at the CVI (every Monday), Bodines Casino (every Monday) and Sharkey’s Casino (every Saturday).  This organization’s mission is “to organize and promote the recognition, support and appreciation of Nevada’s men and women of our Armed Forces, veterans and their families.”
  • Saturday is also National Waiters and Waitresses Day.  We thank and recognize the 100+ employees who serve your food in Katie's and CV Steak . . . . that number jumps to almost 200 when you consider Sharkey's Casino, Bodines Casino and the many bartenders and slot hosts at all three locations who make sure your drinks are delivered.  It's not always an easy job and we hope you'll join us in giving them extra kudos on Saturday!
Graduation Day Cakes! Put this one at the top of your priority list!! (Kidding, but it may just bail you out of a dilemma). We’ve had a few requests, so our bakery is taking orders for Graduation Cakes and Cupcakes. Just stop by the bakery counter near the Katie’s cashier and let us know what size and the preferred school colors. Our bakery crew said they are especially ready to accommodate the Douglas High School graduates with themes of orange and black.

Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: Bill Wharton entertains tonight and Just Us takes the stage Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Early next week in the Cabaret: John Palmore on Sunday, Jonathon “JB” Barton Monday and Stew Stewart Tuesday.  Just Us is a unique group of musicians who decided to blend together the sounds of the Motor City and Oakland, CA to develop "Sweet, Grown & Sexy" sounds - music from the 60’s to the present.  Aladdin handles lead vocal and percussion. He is joined by Les Carter on vocals and drums, Phil Weaver on vocals and guitar and Fred Williams on bass.

Mike Tice Charity Golf Details, Food in Every Direction, More

First TJ’s Corral Concert Getting Close! Granger Smith kicks off our 2016 Concert Schedule in TJ’s Corral on Saturday, May 28 and Frankie Ballard follows 5 days later on Thursday, June 2!  We hope you’re getting as excited as us to get the outdoor concert season started!  Granger’s new lyric video (above) for "If the Boot Fits" from his “Remington” album will get you in the mood and give you a taste of his drivin’ country sound! And for a quick tease of our Eli Young Band Concert on August 14, check out the 20-second clip below from their April performance at the two-day Off The Rails Festival in Texas.

Mike Tice Charity Golf Tournament Opportunities: What started off as a private event five years ago has slowly developed a local almost “cult” following which has created more and more requests to join in this “quite energetic” gathering of Coach Tice’s extended circle of friends. In response, Coach Tice – in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada – has opened the doors this year to even more local participation. Tickets and information are now available for the Decades Concert on Saturday, June 18 in TJ’s Corral (you had to be there last year to understand this was one of the highlights of the summer!), an optional Spaghetti Dinner before the concert, and various packages for participating in the Charity Golf Tournament and Awards Dinner on Sunday, June 19. This event has raised in excess of $400,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada Carson Valley Branch over the last few years with the total topping $100,000 the last two years. Buying tickets for the concert or getting involved in the golf tournament is easy at this link. If you have questions or want to donate or participate in a manner not covered, please call Katie Leao at (775) 882-8820.

The Penny Progressive is inching closer to $50,000!

Catching Flights in Reno Just Got Easier
New Schedule – Early Departures for Early Flights: The Carson ValleyAirporter has revised their schedules to provide early morning departures from the Carson Valley Inn so that passengers can catch the early bank of flights heading east. They have also instituted a late departure for those catching the 11:59 p.m. Jet Blue flight to JFK which is perfect for a long spring weekend in New York City . . . but not on one of our concert weekends, please! Here is a link to departures from CVI to the Reno Airport and another link to departures from the Reno Airport to the CVI.

Food – In Every Direction and Plenty of Choices!

  • Today is Eat What You Want Day and we offer a full realm of possibilities starting here at the Carson Valley Inn with the 24-hour convenience of Katie's, nightly dinner in CV Steak and a variety of snacks and other offerings in Job's Perk. A mile south,  The Jackpot Café in Sharkey's Casino is perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner. And 12 minutes to the north from here, the Bodines Casino Restaurant offers yet another variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner choices including cooked-to-order pizza in a special pizza oven . . . the perfect segue into National Pizza Party Day! Celebrated on the third Friday in May each year (this Friday!) National Pizza Party Day is a perfect reason to stop by Bodines and enjoy a fresh-made pizza in Bodines Restaurant or at the casino bar!
  • Seems a week doesn't go by that we don't mention something about all the fresh bakery products and make at the Carson Valley Inn. We'll start with this Friday which is National Apple Pie Day - one of our specialties serve either by the slice and Katie's or by the whole pie at the Katie's bakery counter. Sunday is Chocolate Chip Day and we sell a pretty hefty size chocolate chip cookie at the bakery counter – 6 for $5! And to wrap up the whole subject of baked goods and put a bow on it: Tuesday is World Baking Day.
Would you fly this to 90,000 feet?
Local Soaring Again Garners a National Spotlight: Tucked away in a private hangar at the nearby Minden-Tahoe Tahoe Airport is a project that, if all goes as planned, will soon blossom into international headlines. The Perlan Project hopes to break the world altitude record set by the Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” when it flew 85,069 feet above the surface of the earth. Unlike the high powered SR-71, the Perlan II is . . . a pressurized glider! Last weekend a group of dignitaries from major sponsor Airbus were in town along with national and international media to review the progress. Here are just a couple of the international postings in the Daily Mail in the UK and the Bangkok Post. The Perlan Project is just one example of some of the many interesting projects and businesses headquartered at the Minden-TahoeAirport.

Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: George Pickard entertains tonight, Melissa Dru takes the stage Thursday Friday and Saturday and Bill Wharton performs Sunday through Wednesday.  Singer and songwriter Melissa Dru has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Melissa and her band cover a wide mix including classic rock, R&B and a bit of country; everything from Pink Floyd to Patsy Cline. A natural performer and entertainer, Melissa will delight you with her unique vocal style and sense of fun. Don't miss this popular songbird in action!

Clay Walker Concert Added, Temptations Tickets for Sale, Much More

Rumor Has It . . . we’re talking the Clay Walker #1 Hit which preceded both the movie and Adele song by the same name. And it’s no rumor – Clay Walker has been added to the TJ’s Corral Concert lineup – bringing us to seven concerts so far!  Clay is a multi-platinum recording artist with eleven #1 Hits and 32 billboard singles. You can hear all your favorites when he takes the TJ’s Corral stage on Friday, July 15.

The Legendary Motown
Sounds of the Temptations
Temptations Tickets On Sale: Tickets are available on our website for The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards concert on Saturday, July 30.  Dennis Edwards was the first new Temptation to enter the group after their “classic five” heyday when he replaced David Ruffin as the lead singer in July of 1968. He is a true legend in the recording industry and The Temptations Review Featuring Dennis Edwards continues to deliver the authentic Motown sound to audiences around the world in live performances.

Concert Tidbits:

$7,000 Guaranteed – Every Saturday – Plus More!  We mentioned the May promotions last week and here’s more: we have drawings on Friday nights at 8 and 10 p.m. when you can win up to $500 on the spot! There are 70 Hot Seat Drawings every Saturday between 2 and 8 p.m. with 70 guaranteed winners of $100 – $50 Cash to put in your pocket and $50 in Free Play to multiply perhaps! That’s $7,000 every Saturday and you’re eligible just by playing in the casino using your INN Club card – and you can win more than once each week! It’s all part of our $100,000 Guaranteed Giveaways Promotion running through June 30 as are the Grand Prize Drawings on May 29 and June 30. We also have 4X Points in the casino on Fridays from 4 p.m. to midnight, Ladies’ Nights on Wednesdays and more.

Boston Crème Pie for Mother’s Day Week: our regular readers and customers already know that we fresh-bake most of our desserts, cookies, brownies, breads and other goodies every day in the CVI bakery. If you have attended a morning event in our convention center, you might’ve even been tempted by the bakery smells wafting down the hall. Many of these goodies are sold at the bakery display counter adjacent to the Katie’s register. Joining the list of our regularly available items through this Sunday is a limited supply of freshly baked Boston Cream Pies. These three-layer beauties are just $12 and remember, the supply is limited! And if you are in the pondering mode, why do "they" call them "Boston Creme Pie" when this item is actually a cake?

Buffalo Gold Lands at CVI: We say it that way because it almost looks like a glowing space ship has landed in our casino next to the new Roulette games we mentioned a couple of weeks ago. The new Buffalo Gold carrousel has the popular Aristocrat games with a new Gold bonus feature that activates with a 20-credit ante bet. We know this sounds like gobbledygook hype, so just stop by and give it a try . . . . Right next to the table games area . . . you can’t miss it! This is just another example of our progressive approach to updating our slot offerings . . . a great segue into an upcoming story (next couple of weeks) on all the progressive jackpots available at the CVI . . . probably quite a few more than you'd think!

Monique in the Cabaret Lounge This Weekend
Free Cabaret Lounge Entertainment: Jonathon “JB” Barton entertains tonight and Thursday, Monique and the Moon Lighters take the stage Friday and Saturday and George Pickard performs Sunday through Wednesday.  Formerly known as Mo'z Motley Blues band, Moni (Monique's nick name) & The Moonlighters have their musical foundation in blues, but also incorporate many other sounds and styles to produce a rockin' rhythm and blues funky dance band experience!

Interesting & Helpful Tidbits and News
  • Mike’s Horses: Toews On Ice won the William Walker Stakes at Churchill Downs last Saturday. Read the story here. How are you trying to pronounce the first word in this horse’s
Toews On Ice Gallops to Victory Again
name? Hint: Think Jonathan Toews, center and captain of the Chicago Blackhawks.  On Sunday, Fantasy Of Luck won the fifth race at Los Alamitos. Whew – we can finally talk horses again with Mike after a few months of dancing around the subject because, as we’ve mentioned before, owning race horses is not for the faint of heart!
  • Sports and Race Book: This week you can bet Major League Baseball, Kentucky Derby Weekend Horseracing, the NBA Playoffs, the NHL Playoffs and Saturday's NASCAR GOBOWLING 400 at Kansas Speedway.
  • Ladies’ Night Tonight: The first 150 ladies who sign up for Ladies’ Night tonight receive a Logo Pen Planter and the first colorful flower pen . . . with a different flower pen to come the remaining Wednesdays in May. Also tonight: a ladies-only drink special, raffle, games and hot seat drawings for Chocolate Shoppe Mother’s Day Baskets.
  • Monthly Blackjack Tournament Tuesday: Our monthly Blackjack Tournament takes place in the pit area on the second Tuesday of each month – all of the $25 entry fees and any rebuys ($1,275 last month) go to the prize pool that is distributed among the top-three finishers. Pretty simple event and any of the dealers can fill you in on how it all works.
  • Elk Friday, Prime Rib Saturday, King Crab Sunday in CV Steak:  Our Friday special in CV Steak is Elk Game Tips sautéed with mushrooms and Cabernet Demi, served over peppered Pappardelle pasta for $26.00. Saturday night’s special is Garlic Studded Prime Rib for $26 and Sunday's special is one pound of King Crab Legs for $32. All three specials are served with fresh vegetable, choice of rice or potato (au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked), tableside tossed salad and warm demi-loaf of bread
Because We Feel Like Mentioning It:
  • May is Hamburger Month. It would take you ‘til National Hamburger Day on May 28, at one per day, to try all the hamburgers available on the menus in Katie’s and CV Steak (the Gourmet Burger!) at the CVI, Bodines Restaurant, the Jackpot Café in Sharkey’s and the various Bar Bites menus.
  • Today is Firefighters Day. We tip our hat and express our sincere appreciation to all the staff and volunteers at the East Fork Fire Prevention District.  Thanks for all you do for the safety of our community!
  • Friday is Beverage Day. At first there was just water and milk. Now, just think of how many different kinds and flavors of beverages (and beers!) exist!
  • Friday is also National Tourist Appreciation Day. With 149 Hotel rooms, 74 Motor Lodge room and 59 RV sites to fill, we are truly appreciative of the business we receive from tourists, business travelers, and those visiting our area overnight for any reason. Thank You!!
  • Monday is Lost Sock Memorial Day (remember, we don’t make this stuff up!) We wonder why "they" just don't celebrate this on June 1 which is Go Barefoot Day. (Makes sense, doesn't it?)
