Food Trucks this Weekend, Eddie Money Info, June Events Listings, More

Eddie Tickets the Easy Way: The Boys and Girls Club Board members are staffing a "booth" this weekend at two community events so that you can pick up your Eddie Money Concert tickets in-person: the Community Concert in Minden Park this Friday evening and then again at the Food Truck Festival at the CVI on Saturday.  Speaking of Eddie Money . . . he was a New York City Police Officer for two years before moving to Berkeley, California in 1968 where he began performing at local clubs (remember that question we posed in last week's blog posting?). Next week, we'll tell you how this concert is financially structured to make it the largest fundraiser of the year for the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada Carson Valley Branch.

Food Trucks this Saturday: Cold beer, hot food and decadent desserts are all on the menu at the Carson Valley Food Truck Festival this Saturday in the Carson Valley Inn north parking lot and TJ's Corral. Foodies will enjoy everything from gourmet specialties to all-American standards plus desserts and other treats. Among the scheduled participants are Battle Born, Brothers BBQ, Bubba Bob's, Hot Dog Rod, Island Ice, Los Caporales, Shanghai Express, Shalala Ice Cream Truck, St. Lawrence Pizza, Nevada Nosh Food Truck, Taster's Paradise and more plus Goodi's Fresh Squeezed Lemonade!
  • Our outside bars will be selling cold beer, wine, sodas and water and we'll have two shaded eating areas with tables and chairs, of course!
  • The Blues Monsters will be providing Free Entertainment on the TJ's Corral stage from 1 to 3 p.m. and again from 5 to 7 p.m.
  • To sweeten the pot, drawing tickets will be distributed randomly at the Food Truck Festival for drawings inside the casino at 3, 5, 7 and 9 p.m. for up to $5,000 Cash!
June Events: There's quite a lot coming up at and around the Carson Valley Inn during June and we've assembled a list of events you may want to mark on your calendar. Let us know if you find these lists useful.

Triple Crown This Year? More Concert News

2 Down, 1 to Go: How sweet to watch Steve Coburn weep with absolute joy and elation after California Chrome won the Preakness Stakes last Saturday. We wish Douglas County residents Steve and Carolyn a place in history on June 7th when California Chrome runs in the Belmont Stakes for the first Triple Crown since 1978!  We'll have all the TVs in our place tuned in and we'll all be Crooning for the Chrome with some tee shirt giveaways, too. In case you missed it, be sure to check Chris Murray's column in the Reno Gazette Journal on the Ten Things You Don't Know About California Chrome!

TJ's Corral News and Info:
  • The Oak Ridge Boys Were Great!  Thanks to over 1000 gracious and enthusiastic fans and supporters, The Oak Ridge Boys Concert sold out and "The Oaks" certainly did not disappoint! They did all their hits plus a rockin' (southern style of course) rendition of the Allman Brothers' Ramblin Man! Be sure to keep tabs on our upcoming concerts and we hope to see you often at TJ's Corral!
  • Food Truck Festival Next in TJ's Corral: Saturday, May 31 brings our next Food Truck Festival to TJ's Corral and the adjacent parking lot area with a variety of Food Trucks, beverages to wash it all down and free live entertainment with The Blues Monsters.
  • The Bluebird Café – as seen on many episodes of the ABC hit show Nashville – is the real roots
for Dustin Lynch who appears live in TJ's Corral on June 13. He rented an apartment behind the Bluebird Café’s back parking lot and literally walked to the Bluebird several times a week to listen and learn about the mysterious art of creating songs from some of Nashville’s most important writers.
  • Eddie Money means Real Money on June 21 for the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, Carson Valley Branch . . . and we'll tell you how it all works next week!
  • One of our 2014 concert artists appearing in TJ's Corral is a former New York City Police Officer. We'll reveal the identity next week!

As Always, Interesting Tidbits and News:
  • Game On! Chef Patrick's Game-On Fridays special in CV Steak this Friday is Braised Wild Boar Shanks: two boar shanks braised and slow cooked with a Bourbon boar sauce for $26.00. The Game-On Friday special also includes tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato.

  • The NBA Conference Finals are Thundering along at a Heated Pace Spurred on by . . .  well NBA fans can see where this was trying to go! Anyway, bet the games in our Sports Book, watch 'em in the Cabaret Lounge or at the Cabaret Bar, and enjoy our variety of bar bites munchies right at your seat!
  • Cover Up Continues: but just for a few more days as we finish resealing our parking lot this week. It's a section at a time so we'll always have plenty of parking. Thanks for your patience.
  • Bear Claws: We have a few regular visitors who call in to order the Bear Claw pastries we bake fresh at the CVI and sell in Job's Perk! Want to check availability on any given day? Call Job's Perk at 775-783-7736.
  • What's Happening? As promised a couple of weeks ago, we're working on a June Calendar of area events (with links to more information) and we'll have that in next week's Wednesday blog posting.

Another Facebook Winner: Liz Miller won two tickets and an overnight stay for the Dustin Lynch Concert in TJ's Corral on June 13. How, you ask? It was a very simple "contest" on our Facebook Page that went up last Friday. If you are into Facebook (if you aren't, be careful about getting hooked!), be sure to check our page, "Like" us, and watch for up-to-date reminders on our casino promotions and other news . . . plus our occasional easy-to-enter giveaway contests.

The Oak Ridge Boys are SRO, B. J. Thomas Concert tickets on sale, Minden-Tahoe Airport, more!

In this week's blog posting: The Oak Ridge Boys are Standing Room Only for Thursday, B. J. Thomas Concert tickets are now on sale, Minden-Tahoe Airport in our spotlight, more!

Concert Notes:
Video Image of Grassy Seating Area
  • The Oak Ridge Boys Concert has sold out for the regular and VIP seating BUT – we have opened up a limited number of SRO (Standing Room Only with a seating option) tickets for what promises to be a truly electrifying Carson Valley Event this Thursday!! Bring a blanket, sit on the raised grass area along the back of TJ's Corral - or stand if you wish - and you'll have a pretty darn good view! The grassy area is over 4,000 sq. ft. (see the video above) and it's the same distance from the front of the stage as it is from home plate to first base on a baseball diamond. Did you know that professional baseball players cover that distance in about 4.5 seconds! But, before we digress further (wait- isn't digressing part of the idea behind a blog?), here's the important part: SRO tickets are $30 plus processing fee and they are only available by calling our Events Center Hotline at 775-783-7766.
  • Tickets are now on Sale for the B.J. Thomas Concert on Thursday, July 10. Once again, our blog readers are getting this information first . . . so we suggest you check our blog posting every Wednesday morning for a heads up on the latest news from the CVI!
  • Kudos to the folks at Getaway Reno Tahoe who were most gracious in letting CVI's Bill Henderson write a guest blog for them. He talks about the summer concert lineup, the new TJ's Corral and – well heck, just read it – fairly short!
  • Dustin Lynch's (June 13) Where It's At and Chris Young's (August 2) Who I Am With You continue to trend up on the iTunes Top 100 Country Songs and Billboard Top 100 Country Hits.
  • Speaking of Dustin Lynch, we'll be running a contest on our Facebook Page starting this Friday to giveaway two tickets for the Dustin Lynch Concert including a hotel room for concert night. It's free to enter, so check it out!!
 Everyone Loves Airplanes . . .
. . . and our local Minden-Tahoe Airport (KMEV in airplane jargon) has just about the best general aviation access and services a pilot could expect. Sure helps the tourism economy, too, providing guests for our hotel whether here on business or pleasure. In early June, the airport will be hosting a 3-day visit by the Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour with the opportunity to tour or take a ride (for a fee, of course) in a B-17 (see the modern-day tail gunner at the left), B-24, B-25 or P-51. Later in June KMEV will be the site of the Minden 18 Meter Nationals Glider Competition – just one of the many national or international soaring events held locally.

As Always, Interesting Tidbits and News:
  • Mike's horses:  Fiftyshadesofhay rallied to take the one-mile Grade 2, $250,000 Ruffian Stakes at Belmont Park on Sunday. Last we heard, none of Mike's horses are running this weekend, but we'll all be rooting for California Chrome in Saturday's Preakness Stakes!
  • Game On! Chef Patrick's Game-On Fridays special in CV Steak this Friday is a Rabbit Stifado – a flavorful, slow cooked rabbit stew served with Orzo pasta – just $25.00! As with all CV Steak entrees, the Game-On Friday special also includes tableside-tossed salad, vegetable and your choice of potato - au gratin, baked, or a one-pound, twice-baked potato.
  • Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge: George Pickard  performs tonight, The Vegas Road Show appears Thursday through Saturday and Brian Andrews takes the stage Sunday through next Wednesday. Here is a link to the schedule for the next couple of months.
  • Pardon Our Dust: OK, so it's sealer and not dust. If you drive by this week and wonder what's going on in the west parking lot (between the CVI and the RV Park), we're having the lot re-sealed – half today and the other half on Sunday. This project will not affect the available parking for Thursday night's concert and we'll be sealing other sections of the lot next week.
I Turned $25 into $$650 in just 3 Hours! Sure sound like one of those too-good-to-be-true "come on" claims . .  but turns out someone really did exactly this last night here at the CVI. Richard L. finished first in our monthly blackjack tournament and turned his $25 entry fee into winnings equal to half the $1,300 prize pool. The rest of the money? 30% and $390 went to Rich R. for finishing 2nd and 20% ($260) to David B for 3rd. Pretty simple deal and you can take a shot for yourself in next month's Blackjack Tournament on Tuesday, June 10.

Mother's Day, The Oak Ridge Boys Ticket Update and More

Mother's Day specials Sunday, The Oak Ridge Boys tickets going strong, Dustin Lynch and Chris Young both in the Top 20 and, as always, some miscellaneous useful info and reminders!

Mother's Day is this Sunday and we sure hope you have your plans in place. Just in case, here's a friendly reminder that both Katie's Country Kitchen and CV Steak are serving all their regular menu items at the regular prices . . . plus, both restaurants are offering a couple of additional  Mother's Day dinner specials. We put it all on one simple flyer and hope you'll stop by! For CV Steak reservations, call 775-783-6650.

Concert Notes:
  • What a great night for our opening concert last Thursday! Michael Martin Murphey and his band certainly didn't disappoint the crowd and the weather was top notch! Thank you to the so many of you who expressed your appreciation for our new venue  during the evening!
  • The Oak Ridge Boys Concert tickets are selling very well and we are moving toward a sell-out.  Sales had been fairly steady, but took a surge after last Thursday's concert and have been strong since. So, now is the time to get your tickets!
  • Top 20 Country Hits: Dustin Lynch (June 13) and Chris Young (August 2) are trending very well on the iTunes Top 100 Country Songs list this morning. Chris is at #17 with Who I Am With You and Dustin's Where It's At is #18.
Mike's Horses:
  • You've heard it from us before: horse racing is an iffy business and you "never know" until post time. We saw that last Thursday morning when Mike Pegram's horse Hoppertunity was scratched from the Kentucky Derby due to a foot issue that left a doubt in Trainer Bob Baffert's mind about the safety of running in the Derby. The colt is also out for the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes after undergoing minor surgery for a foot spur earlier this week.
  • We offer our hearty congratulations to Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, owners of California Chrome for their Derby victory! Steve and his wife Carolyn are residents of Douglas County and we're thrilled that the Derby winner had such strong local ties!
  • Mike and his partners Karl Watson and Paul Weitman were able to celebrate on Saturday when their four-year-old filly Midnight Lucky led wire-to-wire in winning the Grade 1 Humana Distaff in the 7th race at Churchill Downs. Ridden by jockey Rosie Napravnik, this was the fourth win in five starts for Midnight Lucky.
  • Shakin It Up, who Mike owns with Dennis Cardoza, came in 2nd by a head in the 9th Race, the Grade 2 Churchill Downs.
Random Stuff:
  • Thanks for the feedback on the May events we listed in last week's Blog posting. We'll try to do it again towards the end of May for June.
  • We are now open 7 nights a week in CV Steak: through the summer and into the fall. Helps with the "limited dining choices in our area on Monday nights" dilemma.
  • Wow, another month has gone by and our monthly Blackjack Tournament is this coming Tuesday evening. $25 gets you in and ALL the entry fees are paid back out in prize money. In this event, it helps a little to be somewhat good at blackjack . . . helps a bunch more to be lucky!
  • Facebook Winner: MaryJane Shaw won the Dinner for Two in CV Steak this past week. Check our Facebook Page early next week for our next giveaway – never a cost to enter. Oh, and watch next Wednesday's blog posting for a heads up.
  • National Travel and Tourism Week runs through May 11 – a perfect reason for us to offer our thanks to the many tourists who visit the Carson Valley Inn each year – we appreciate your business!
