Share Your Christmas Food Drive Friday

Now in its 25^th year, The KTVN Share Your Christmas Community Food Drive has been happening at the Carson Valley Inn since 1999 which was the first year the event was expanded outside of Reno and Carson City  The major source of funds and food for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, the Food Drive will fill our west lot and RV Park entrance with activity from 6 AM to 6 PM this Friday. Some pertinent info:

• Well over 150 volunteers will be working throughout the day to unload, weigh, sort and box tens of thousands of pounds of food which then all go to the Food Closet’s off-site warehouse.
• This year’s KTVN Channel 2 crew is Arianna Bennett, Ryan Canaday and “Ky the Traffic Guy” Sisson. 
• Santa will arrive by CareFlight helicopter at 9:30 a.m. and will be here for pictures until early afternoon.
• Two United Blood Services Bloodmobiles will be accepting donations from 11:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 800-696-4484 or visit www.BloodHero.com (Sponsor code: Share).
• Emergency vehicles light the way before dawn and at dusk and the National Guard boomboxmobile (our term, not theirs) will pump out holiday music during the day.
• All unwrapped toys donated at the Food Drive will go to Project Santa Claus.
• Stop by anytime between 6 AM and 6 PM to drop off your donation – no matter how big or small!

Three Santas Crawled Up to Sharkey’s Silver Dollar Bar . . .

We’re not saying that this did or didn’t happen during last year’s Santa Crawl in downtown Gardnerville. And we really don’t have any control over what people do when they don Santa Claus outfits. But we do know that if past years are any indication, there will be plenty of seasonal merriment and Santa impersonators this Friday when participants in the Ninth Annual Gardnerville Santa Crawl pass in front of, next to, behind and through Sharkey’s Casino!  Before you start calling us out on the headline, remember, it’s all in fun as part of the season that includes a 38-year old song titled “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer,” so let’s not take things too seriously! And this event is for two good local causes: Austin's House & the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, both of which can use the seasonal assistance! Bring a $10.00 donation to the JT Basque Bar & Dining Room, Battle Born Wine, Overland Restaurant & Pub, Buckaroos, The French Bar or Nevada Ugly and you’ll receive a participation ticket. You can then enjoy drink specials from 7 to 10 PM Friday at any or all of the participating businesses. Sharkey’s drink special is a Jägermeister concoction including Jaeger Spice and Apple Cider with or without Whipped Cream for just $1.  There are also raffle prizes and a Best Costume Contest. Lucky Boy and Lucky Girl at CVI

Already very popular at our other three properties, a bank of Fu Nan Fu Nu™ video slots appeared on the CVI casino floor this week near the giant Roulette game. Featuring traditional Chinese art and sounds, “Fu Nan” (Lucky Boy) and “Fu Nu” (Lucky Girl) offer 243 ways to win.  Also added this week, housed in the Big Red cabinet near Katie’s entrance: a bank of the classic Colossal Diamonds 3-reel, 1-line games with a top award of $6,000. Stuffed Fudge Brownie Sundae

• Friday, December 8 is Brownie Day. The supposed textbook says the best way to celebrate Brownie Day is to “hunker down over a big ol’ slice of brownie and indulge in this favorite.” We say: our 4’ square chocolate brownies make a great base for the Stuffed Fudge Brownie Sundae in Katie’s . . . or take ‘em home from the Katie’s Bakery Counter for $1.99 each or three for $5.
• Saturday, December 9 is Pastry Day. The sign above marks the way to Candy Cane Lane, our musical and visual celebration of Christmas “performing” nightly in our West parking lot through December 31. Drive through before or after dinner, cocktails, or gaming at the CVI . . . and tune your car radio to 89.9 FM for the accompanying music.

On the Sports Front

• Our Guys Picks:  Our trio bounced back into the respectability column last week picking a collective 4 out of 6. This week, Mike is taking Army +3½ against Navy and the Raiders +4 at the Chiefs. Greg follows Mike’s lead with Army +3½ and the Vikings -3 at Carolina. Alan looks to maintain his season lead with the Eagles +2 at the Rams and  over 46 in the Redskins-Chargers game.
• Enjoy $2 Draft Beer during all Televised Pro and College football games at the CVI - and our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.

Food Drive Friday, Christmas Day Dining Specials, What Happened to Our Pool, More

Food Drive and Blood Drive Friday . . . We’ve pumped this the last few weeks so here are the basics: The KTVN Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive is Friday from 6 AM to 6 PM at the entrance to our RV Park and the Blood Drive runs from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM.  Santa will be arriving by Care Flight helicopter at 9:30 AM and in the video above we caught the Care Flight crew (great at their profession, not necessarily at singing) getting his Blue Sleigh ready in fair weather a few days ago at the Gardnerville base. If weather grounds the Blue Sleigh Friday, Santa will arrive by Red Sleigh from the East Fork Fire Protection District. Please stop by!

Christmas Day Dinner at the Inn:  CV Steak and Katie's are serving their regular menus plus Christmas Day Specials. CV Steak will open at 4:30 pm and Christmas Day specials are a Garlic-Studded Slow-Roasted Prime Rib of Beef served with your choice of giant baked potato, garlic mashed potatoes, twice-baked potato or au gratin potatoes for $29; and Stuffed Fillet of Sole, stuffed with crab, shrimp and scallops and served with béarnaise and wild rice pilaf for $28. Christmas Day reservations are strongly recommended (basically a must) by calling 775-783-6650. Katie's is offering a Traditional Roasted Turkey Dinner from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Christmas Day with  giblet gravy, sage stuffing, fresh mashed potatoes, glazed yams, green beans Amandine, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, soup or fresh garden green salad, fresh bread and creamery butter all for $14.99. And yes, Katie’s will also be serving the usual Sunday Chandler Chicken Dinner Special on Christmas Day.

• There are a total of 15 Christmas Trees in the Carson Valley Inn including  themed trees such as Frozen, Disney, Cowboy and Wine! Why a wine-themed Christmas Tree? Santa made us do it after reading this Food and Wine article about pairing wine with cookies!
• All the Christmas decorations around the Carson Valley Inn are original creations - most if not all by our chief elf, Eileen Knox!
• The old-fashioned wooded theme Christmas Tree at Sharkey’s (see slide movie above) is 9 ½ feet tall, it took 2½  hours to create the top and 4 ½ hours to decorate.
• A Toys for Tots box is located inside our hotel entrance – feel free to drop off a new unwrapped toy on your way in to check out the decorations.
• Candy Cane Lane – our drive-by Christmas display – is lit up nightly through December. Pull in at the entrance between our big sign and the Carson Valley Market. Tune your radio to 89.9 and listen to music while you watch the elves and other characters! 

What Caused This in our Indoor Pool??

No, We Didn't Find A Baby Ruth Bar Floating In Our Pool!  We kicked around whether this headline would offend anyone and decided anyone over 45 would totally get it; anyone under 35 wasn't even born yet . . . and it's hard to offend them anyway.  That left the 35 - 45 age group so, for you, we are referring to the classic "Doodie!" scene from the 1980 movie Caddyshack.  We took the picture a few days ago as workers were totally refurbishing the surface areas of our indoor pool and installing a new UV filtering system  . . . one of the many "behind the scenes" updates and improvements happening every year at the CVI.  It’s all part of  Mike Pegram's ongoing commitment to making sure we have the maintenance, furnishings, equipment and other tools to keep the CVI up-to-date and moving forward. As for the pool project, it will be finished in the next day or two and the pool will be open for our guests this weekend!

Let's Talk Sweets (seems like we do that a lot!): Tomorrow (Thursday) is Brownie Day and we make them every day in our bakery and you can buy ‘em at the Katie’s Bakery Counter.  Friday is National Pastry Day and - you guessed it - we also make pastries every day in our bakery and they are for sale at the Katie’s Bakery Counter or Jobs Perk. Wait, it keeps going: Saturday is Gingerbread Decorating Day and Monday is Gingerbread House Day. No, we don’t make gingerbread in our bakery but catch this: We have put together a few gingerbread houses and will have them available at our Employee and Family Christmas Party on Monday afternoon. One of the many kids’ activities will be decorating these gingerbread houses. And when they’re all done, we're taking them down to the Brookdale Gardnerville Assisted-Living Facility so their residents can enjoy them - probably for the first day or two by looking at them . . . but within a few days we imagine they will be devoured!

• This Week:  Alan likes the Buccaneers at -2½ over the Saints and the Giants at +3½ over the Cowboys. Mike picked Navy at -6½ over Army and the Steelers at -2½ over the Bills. He wanted to pick the Saints, but has too much respect for Alan after last week’s results! Greg in our Sales Department has been watching these weekly picks from the sidelines and jumped in this week with the “overs” (46½) on the Chief-Raiders game and the Falcons at -6 over the Rams. 

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Steve Lord performs tonight, Justin Lee entertains Thursday, the John Dawson Band takes the stage Friday and Saturday, there’s NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and George Pickard appears next Tuesday and Wednesday. Justin Lee is an up-and-coming musician who has gone from playing in a cover band with his buddies to performing on the same stage as acts like The Band Perry, Parmalee and Jake Owen and he has performed at Night in the Country, Nevada’s largest country music festival. The John Dawson Band is a Reno based group of five fun-lovin' guys who like to play music and entertain with a variety of modern country and classic rock. Sister About to Get Out of Control!

Sister's Christmas Catechism / The Mystery of the Magi's Gold is nuttier than "The Nutcracker," more 'kicks' than "Radio City's Christmas Spectacular" and funnier than "A Christmas Carol."  Don't miss out on the holiday comedy hijinks as Sister goes head-on with many of the truths and old wives tales about nuns and how they terrorized the students back in the “old days.”  She also tackles many of the idiosyncrasies of church in general in a way that will have you laughing and, unless you are a proponent of participation trophies, not be offended! The two nights of Sister’s Christmas Catechism  are this Thursday and Friday - come either night as the shows are (supposedly) the same. Food Drive Almost Here . . . so the crew at Channel 2 huddled in front of a studio camera (no smartphone selfies for this bunch) and issued the above video invitation to the KTVN Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive coming up on Friday, December 9 from 6 AM to 6 PM at the entrance to our RV Park. Santa will be arriving by Care Flight helicopter (weather permitting) at 9:30 AM and hanging around until mid-afternoon, East Fork Fire Protection District will have various pieces of equipment and personnel on hand throughout the day, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office brings over some of their specialty vehicles, and volunteers from the Nevada National Guard, United States Marines and Nevada Department of Corrections will be helping out. All money and food donated locally goes to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. And all blood donated (yep, there’s a Blood Drive from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) goes to help those who need this often-life-saving assistance during the upcoming holiday season. Let’s Talk Christmas:

• Christmas Parties are Making a Comeback in our improving economy and you will see quite a few of them during December in our Ballroom space, Picon Room and the Private Dining Room in CV Steak. We bring this up because there may be still be room for your company if you don’t need a prime night . . . and now would be a good time to think about what you might want to do for next year as those prime nights go fast. The Carson Valley Visitors Authority and Carson Valley Times are kicking off #WhyCV – a photo, video and written word storytelling contest – in a few weeks and they’ll be looking for your best version of why Carson Valley has carved out that special place in your heart.  Prizes include an iPad, a GoPro, smartphone camera lenses, and a variety of gift certificates to the best in local dining. So why are we telling you now if submissions aren’t accepted until December 28? Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge:  Jamie Rollins performs tonight, The Nighthawks entertain Thursday through Saturday, NFL Football on the Big Screen in the Cabaret on Sunday and Monday nights and Steve Lord appears next Tuesday and Wednesday.  The Nighthawks are a local (Gardnerville/Wellington) country and rock band specializing in popular dance tunes from the 60's and 70's. The group performs a wide variety of styles covering artists from Alan Jackson to ZZ Top, including great classic country tunes and expert performances of classic rock songs. A guitarist with dynamic vocals, Steve Lord is a main stage West Coast performer who presents an evening of oldies, country, pop, blues, jazz, soul and rock 'n' roll.
