20 Must Do's in 2020, From Our Slots to Your Pocket, Beet This, More from the Carson Valley Inn

June in the Carson Valley

20 Must Do's in 2020
Our friends at Visit Carson Valley posted a blog last week enticingly headlined “Ultimate Carson Valley Bucket List: 20 Must Do’s in 2020.”  Whether you’re looking for a new travel bucket list, or simply want a fun challenge as a Carson Valley local or past visitor, this assembly of 20 suggestions presented in no particular order is sure to have a few that pique your interest. Our favorite? Why #19 of course!

Chris & Diane Won $10,491.90
From Our Slots to Your Pocket!
The headline of this short article sounds like typical casino marketing hype but for two lucky winners in the last few days it was a true statement!
We had a lucky local win $33,933.66 on the HUGE Buffalo Stampede machine and we respected the request to not use their name or picture. The money still went in their pocket!
Chris Heidemann jumped right in for a picture after he won $10,491 on our Spirit Link game. He and his wife Dianne came up for the night from Camino for their 16th Anniversary. They had a very nice dinner in CV Steak with his parents Sig & Lila Heidemann who live locally and have been long-time friends of the CVI. Chris’ Spirit Link jackpot followed earlier slot wins the same evening and he plans to use his winnings to help pay for his new trailer/dirt hauler. We didn’t ask, but we sure hope he picked up the dinner tab for his parents!

Are you next? Our Penny Progressive Jackpot is over $26,000; the Grand Jackpot on the new Dragon Link carrousel is above $10,000; the Grand Jackpot on our FuNan FuNu bank of four slots is over $31,000, The two Fort Knox slots have a jackpot topping $16,500, the Hot Shot Progressive is above $22,000 and our three banks of Lightning Link slots have major Jackpots of $10,700 to $13,900. And there are more!!  Bottom-line: There is still lots to win at the CVI!

Emily with Calamari, Alix with Beet Salad
Beet This!
We had so many favorable comments on the Ahi Poke Tuna in last week’s blog that we asked the chef to put together one of his favorite combinations. Off the top section of our menu he chose the Roasted Red & Golden Beet Salad - a tasty blend of the two earthy beets, baby mixed greens, pickled red onions, crumbled goat cheese, candied walnuts and balsamic reduction. For an entrée, he prepared the Crispy Seared Panko Crusted Calamari Steak in clarified butter and added a lemon and brown butter caper sauce.

When It Hits 65° in Late February
With the temperature forecast to hit the mid-sixties today, we just have to put in another plug for our Spring Stag Golf Tournament on the last week in April and our Group Golf Packages available anytime during the April - October Carson Valley “golf season.”
And since golf is one of the major events in the Mike Tice Foundation Charity Weekend For The Kids at the end of June, we invite you to check out the participation and sponsorship packages. Some of the other major events surrounding the weekend include a special private Happy Hour prior to the Charlie Daniels Band concert on Friday, June 26 and a revamped Carson Valley Summer Fest on Saturday afternoon and evening, June 27. All the information is available on this page and we hope you'll jump in and help raise funds to build a permanent facility for the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada Carson Valley Branch!

CVI is Best, Candy Dance Weekend, Tourism Day, More from Carson Valley Inn

The Record Courier’s 2019 Best of Carson Valley
The Record Courier’s 2019 Best of Carson Valley Awards Luncheon is this Friday in our Valley Ballroom and we received special permission from The Record Courier to announce a few of our awards a day early (thanks, Tara!): The Carson Valley Inn was voted #1 Best Casino and #1 Best Lodging . . . and CV Steak topped three categories: #1 Best Dinner, #1 Best Place to Take a Date and #1 Best Steak!  We appreciate these votes of confidence and encourage you to check all of the winners coming out in this Thursday’s issue of The Record Courier!

Candy Dance This Weekend
This weekend the Town of Genoa will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Candy Dance, originally conceived in 1919 by Lillian Virgin Finnegan. Attendees can experience the picturesque setting of Genoa from 9 AM to 5 PM Saturday and Sunday while enjoying over 350 arts, crafts and food vendors from around the country. This recent story in Edible Reno-Tahoe gives the background. All the details on parking, Genoa road closures and other logistics are at this link! We suggest you read carefully if you are planning to attend the event or head to one of the Genoa Lakes golf courses this weekend.

Plenty From the Sports & Race Book
  • Mike P’s Horses: those of you who have been around the CVI the last few years know that our owner Mike Pegram is “into” race horses (OK, so “into” is an understatement). Was a good week last week with both 2-year old filly Quality Response and 3-year old colt Speed Pass winning at Los Alamitos. This weekend, Mike’s 4-year old colt McKinzie is listed as a probable starter in the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita. And remember our standard caveat: with horse racing, changes can and will occur so we’ll all know for sure at Post Time!
  • Sports Book Mike’s Musings:
    • The favorites only went 6 -10 against the spread this week and six underdogs won their games. The Dolphins almost covered and almost had a lead in their game with the Cowboys (only down 10-6 at halftime).
    • As a Michigan fan, I get to look forward to more suggestions about Coach Harbaugh.  I'm a fan of his, so it will take a scandal to turn me.   He's kind of wacky, but seems like a decent guy.  He is certainly a "Michigan Man."
    • After the Niners won at home last Sunday despite five turnovers we got wondering what the most turnovers a home team has had and still managed to win. Turns out it’s seven in the Super Bowl era . . . if you believe what you find on the internet!
    • Speaking of the Niners and turnovers at home, they had 6 (3 interceptions and 3 fumbles lost) in a home game at Candlestick Park on January 10, 1982. They also won that game when Dwight Clark made The Catch to win the 1981 NFC Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys! The final score was 28 – 27, the over/under was 42 and Dallas was favored by 3 points!
  • Our Pro Pick’em Progressive Jackpot is at $2,917 this week. Pick all 15 NFL winners on our weekly $5 Parlay Card and it’s yours. Each week it is not “hit,” the jackpot climbs based on the collective contest play at the CVI, Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino.
  • Football Extras:
    • $2 Coors Light draft at the Casino Bar or in the Cabaret Lounge during all televised NFL and College Games.
    • A couple of Free NFL Hats given away for each of the teams playing every Monday Night Football Game.
    • Bar Snacks Delivered to Your Seat while you watch or play. Get the full menu and pricing at this link!
    • Poker Room Squares Pool: Earn squares as you play in live poker games during the week. Each week we kick in $160 and the payout is on the Monday Night Football Game – $40 to the winners of the first three quarters and the final score. Any unclaimed quarters roll to the next week and for the September 30 Bengals/Steelers game it’s up to $115 a quarter!!
  • Seasonal Action on the board includes NFL and NCAA Football, Major League Baseball, Canadian Football, WNBA Basketball Playoffs, Horse Racing and this Sunday’s NASCAR Monster Energy Series Roval 400. What? Roval? Yep – kind of a hybrid course that is partially road racing and partially oval course acing. Still scratching your head? So were we so we found this posting from a year ago that explains it!
  • Futures Bets on the board include: 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup, 2019 World Series, 2020 NCAA Football Championship, 2020 Super Bowl, 2020 NCAA College Basketball, 2020 NBA Championship and 2020 Stanley Cup.
Tourism Day is More Than Just One Day
Friday is Tourism Day. If you are reading this as a visitor to Carson Valley, we invite you to visit us in the land of everyday legends! As the folks at Visit Carson Valley like to say, Don’t just drive through it, drive to it! Click to read their brief article on 5 Reasons to Get Out of Your Car in Carson Valley this October . . . and of course we encourage you to stay for a night or two at the Carson Valley Inn!  If you are a “local,” remember we are all tourists at some point – either venturing out of our area for new sights and experiences . . . or discovering an attraction in our own backyard that previously eluded us.

We'll Do All the Cooking AND Clean Up the Mess!
A Few More Special Days This Week
  • Today is Cooking Day. We stand opposed – here’s why: If you click on the link the cleverly worded description of this manufactured day includes, “Start with getting in your kitchen and finding out what tools you have available, and start figuring out what you can prepare.” We say balderdash . . . sounds like way too much work! The CVI approach: Come into Katie’s or CV Steak, we’ll do all the figuring out and work, you just enjoy a good meal!
  • Saturday is Drink Beer Day. We thought we were being pretty clever when we went around and asked a few admitted beer drinkers how they were going to celebrate what we were sure would be a special day to them.  The answer, while worded slightly differently in each case, was fairly universal, “We don’t need a special day, every day is beer day!” So, it is with pleasure that we offer a wide variety of beer – either bottled or on tap – every day at CVI!
  • Monday is Thunderbirds Day which marks the date when the original Thunderbirds made its debut on British TV. We’re not into any of that, but we are into the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and look forward to their return to the Aviation Roundup at Minden-Tahoe Airport just over a year from now on October 3 & 4, 2020!
This Week’s Promotions Lineup
  • Ladies’ Night Wednesdays: The fun runs from 5:30 to 8:30PM including a Free Bamboo Phone Stand for the first 150 ladies (over 100 include FreePlay), Tupperware Baskets as hot seat prizes. The ladies will also enjoy 3 free Bingo Games, 4 free Raffles and a weekly Drink Special.  Bonus tonight - It's Couples Night with extra prizes for the plus-one crowd!
  • Free Bingo Thursdays: Free Bingo Games in the casino every hour from 11 AM to 7 PM. Just be gaming with your INN Club card when we hand out tickets and play bingo with us for free cash and FreePlay Prizes.
  • Point Multiplier Fridays: Watch your benefits roll up quickly with Four Times Points all day every Friday in September.
  • Harleys and 7.5 Million Points Friday and Saturday: We’re giving away 3 Harleys this fall – one each at CVI, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino.  In the process, we are also giving away a total of 7.5 Million Points at our four properties in weekend drawings. Over 150,000 Free Points are given away each Friday and Saturday night at the CVI based on your order of finish including 50,000 Free Points to the first place finisher! Drawings run from 7 to 8:30 PM.
  • Point Party Sunday: You’ll be earning anywhere from 2X to 10X Points from noon to 7PM with the point multiplier changing every half hour. We guarantee the 10X Points will run for 30 minutes at least twice every Sunday.

  • Reckless Envy Thursday thru Saturday: The versatility of Reckless Envy might just bring a heartfelt ballad such as Chris Stapleton’s version of “Tennessee Whiskey,” an authentic version of “Barracuda” by Heart, an entertaining rendition of Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” a guitar driven ZZ Top classic such as “Tush” or a dance song like Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” The group includes Billy James Lassi (founder of the Midnight Riders) on lead vocals and acoustic guitar; accomplished violinist Virginia Bowman (Tahoe Symphony, Reno Philharmonic and Lubbock Symphony Orchestras) on fiddle, keyboard, lead and harmony vocals; and Keith Lindsey on lead guitar and vocals.
  • NFL Football Sunday and Monday Nights: We suspend live entertainment on Sunday and Monday nights during the fall so the featured night NFL games can be enjoyed on the big screen.
  • Kid and Lisa Tuesday and Wednesday: Kid & Lisa are a musical power couple that spans a wide range of popular genres, from soul to blues to pop to standards and beyond. Kid is known as the guitarist for world-renowned Blues band Rick Estrin & The Nightcats and has worked with Elvin Bishop, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Charlie Musselwhite and Keith Richards to name a few. Lisa Leuschner Andersen hit the big time in 2004 as a finalist on American Idol and is a high-demand freelance vocalist in the Bay Area.

Martina McBride Added to TJ's Concert Schedule, More from the Carson Valley Inn

Martina McBride Added to
2019 Concerts in TJ’s Corral
Martina McBride has joined the 2019 Concert Lineup in TJ’s Corral and she will be performing on Sunday, August 4.  Martina is a multiple Grammy® nominated country icon whose incomparable vocals have kept her at the top of the charts garnering six No. 1 hits and twenty top 10 singles. Selling more than 18 million albums to date, McBride has earned fourteen Gold, nine Platinum, three Double Platinum and two Triple Platinum certifications. McBride has been honored with more than 15 major music awards, including four wins from the Country Music Association and three Academy of Country Music Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year.  Tickets for Martina’s concert will go on sale as soon as we pin down all the details – look for an announcement in next Wednesday’s blog.

Meanwhile, tickets are available now for our other upcoming concert and events including Sister's Easter Catechism on April 20, Easton Corbin on May 24, Uncle Kracker on June 29, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on July 4 and Dwight Yoakam on July 26.  We’re working on two or three more 2019 concerts and events for TJ’s Corral so look for announcements in this blog which is updated every Wednesday morning at 7 AM.

A Tesla Charging Outside of TJ's Corral
Charge Your Tesla Here!
It is now more convenient than ever to drive your Tesla on overnight trips to the CVI because you can be all charged up before the trip home. And if you are passing through and need a boost, you can load about 100 miles in about the time it takes to have lunch in Katie's and a little fun in the casino. All this is possible thanks to the very recent addition of four Tesla Destination Charging Stations which are located on the south wall of TJ’s Corral.

Rick Started with This . . .
He Turned Trash Into Cash!
Rick Lane was in town last weekend to join his family for his grandmother’s Celebration of Life. A fun-loving bunch not strangers to our casino, the group was in on Saturday night and Rick’s name was pulled in one of the hot seat drawings between 6 and 7:30 PM. He looked over the various Costco gifts available and latched on to the box of Kitchen Trash Bags. Further examination revealed the box also had the ticket he needed to move onto the 7:30 PM festivities for the weekly rent giveaway. Rick and 10 other finalists chose a special chocolate gift and the one Rick picked was the winner! He was given the choice: take $5,000 Cash and call it a day or spin the wheel for a chance at up to $7,800. The picture is worth five thousand words!
And Turned it into This!
Special Days
  • Today is Ravioli Day. Here are two options:
    • Stay home and roll out a part of your pasta dough very finely on your worktop, fill with a filling of your choice, seal with a top layer of pasta, and then boil for 2-3 minutes. Serve with a tomato or cream-based sauce for a hopefully lovely and memorable meal and a definitely messy cleanup!
    • Or, come in to CV Steak and enjoy our Porcini Mushroom Ravioli either as a Starter (that’s fancy talk for Appetizer) or as an Entrée. It’s an easy choice for us: See you in CV Steak tonight!
  • Thursday is French Bread Day. We don’t make French Bread in our bakery, but we do bake the incredibly delicious Sourdough Baguette’s served warm in CV Steak every night and they are the perfect accompaniment to the Porcini Mushroom Ravioli appetizer or Entrée!
  • Saturday is Puppy Day. Everyone loves puppies and you’ll definitely smile when you watch this short 1-minute video from SG Gaming promoting their OMG! Puppies! video slots. And of course you can play one of these slots here at the CVI – any of our casino floor personnel can lead you to the spot!
  • Monday is Waffle Day. Celebrate this one any day of the week ‘cause waffles are available daily in Katie’s from 7 to 11 AM.
  • Tuesday is Spinach Day. We know most of our readers would rather have something (anything?) other than spinach, but we do have to touch all bases. Our suggestion? Order the Spinach Salad in Katie’s and spring for a few extra bucks to add the Grilled Chicken and Avocado options!
Basketball’s Maddest Week!!
  • The NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament . . . the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament  (CIT). . .the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) . . . So many acronyms, over 100 teams, dozens of games and hundreds of thousands of cheering alumni! It’s all crammed into what is collectively referred to as March Madness over the next couple of weeks. With over four dozen 65-inch screens around our Cabaret Lounge, Casino Bar, Table Games Area, CV Steak Bar and Poker Room, we can pretty much cover any game that’s televised. And very few can resist the temptation to put at least a few dollars on their alma mater or favorite team because there is no better boast than telling your college buddies that you put your money where your heart was whether your team wins or loses!
  • Ever wonder what the historical odds are of a particular seed winning in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament? Our friend Bill Chernock, Executive Director of the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, had this info in his update to members yesterday and we are sharing it here as he presented it:
No. 1 seed vs. No. 16 seed: 135-1 (99.26%)
No. 2 seed vs. No. 15 seed: 128-8 (94.12%)
No. 3 seed vs. No. 14 seed: 115-21 (84.56%)
No. 4 seed vs. No. 13 seed: 108-28 (79.41%)
No. 5 seed vs. No. 12 seed: 89-47 (65.44%)
No. 6 seed vs. No. 11 seed: 85-51 (62.5%)
No. 7 seed vs. No. 10 seed: 84-52 (61.76%)
No. 8 seed vs. No. 9 seed: 69-67 (50.74%)
  • In Addition to College Hoops: There are plenty more sports to watch and wager with the continuation of NBA Basketball, NHL Hockey, Alliance of American Football League games, the NASCAR STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway, Spring Training Baseball and Horseracing.

Sometimes Skis are Better Than Wheels!
We think this wagon would’ve had a much better chance if those big wooden wheels were two big wooden skis! However, had that been the case, this artistic image might not have been one of the winners in Visit Carson Valley’s most recent #WHYCV photo contest! And speaking of skiing, with the brief blast of additional snow today conditions should be quite good this weekend at Heavenly Lake Tahoe and Kirkwood, the two Vail Resorts so easily accessible to guests at the Carson Valley Inn. Stay at the CVI where rates are more reasonable and it’s easier to get around . . . and then drive to these two resorts when you’re ready to ski!

The Denver Saunders Duo is a stripped down performance of the band “The Well Dressed Mannequins.” Denver Saunders (vocals/guitar) and Jarom Horner (6-String Bass) are known for inspiring dancing, laughing and sing-alongs wherever they play.
In a scene so often dominated by technology and gimmicks, Arizona Jones prefers to do it the old fashioned way - live and personal.  When they put their rockin' spin on classic R& B hits from the 60's and 70's, you never know who'll be singing louder, the audience or the band. They play the hits from Aerosmith and Amy Winehouse to Wilson Pickett and ZZ Top.
Rock River is Buddy and Kim from the Buddy Emmer Blues Band presenting an evening of blues and other music!
Jeff Campbell is a vocalist,  impassioned  songwriter  and  lifelong  musician . . .  an emotional,  evocative  poet  with  a  rock  lover’s  heart!
