The meaningless preseason games are over; the blah, blah, blah speculative chatter of the sports-talk radio and TV shows is winding to a close and the waiting is over . . . the 2019 NFL Football Season starts this week! Here’s a rundown of everything football related going on at the CVI this season:

Sports Book Hours: The CVI Sports Book hours vary by day and season. During Football, we open at 9 AM Monday – Friday and 8 AM Saturday and Sunday. The Sports Book closes at 6 PM or, on nights with key prime-time College or NFL football games, at the start of the second half.
Poker Room Squares Pool: For starters, our Poker Room is now open Mondays starting at 4 PM during Monday Night Football season and our Squares Pool is back! Earn squares as you play in live poker games during the week. Payout is based on the Monday Night Football Game - $40 cash to the winners of the first three quarters and the final score. Our entire community won big as a result of last Thursday’s Battle of the Badges Blood Drive at the CVI! Here is part of the note we received the next day from our Donor Services Rep at Vitalant: “We wanted to send the biggest THANK YOU! I’m excited to share your results from yesterday’s blood drive! We had such a great turnout of donors that we had to go back to Reno and get more supplies half way into the drive. 108 donors stepped up and gave the gift of life! Those donors gave a total of 126 units of blood! Those vital units will help hospital patients in the northern Nevada and northern California area. That deserves to be celebrated! We cherish your partnership and how you’ve embraced this life- transforming mission. I am excited to announce the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department won the Battle of the Badges with 62 votes.” Our thanks goes out to all who donated or just stopped by to say “hi!” We appreciate your support!

On a sad aviation note, we offer our thoughts this week to the family of Al Haynes who passed away in late August at the age of 87. Captain Haynes told his incredible story of the United Flight 232 crash in Sioux City, Iowa to overflowing audiences in our then Valley Ballroom twice in the CVI’s early years: in March of 1993 (sponsored by Minden Rotary) and February of 1996 (sponsored by the Aviation Association of Douglas County). Some of us were here for those presentations and they were riveting!

Active Labor Day Weekend for Sports Fans

NFL Preseason: to make sure all teams start out on an even playing field (corny, huh!) when the regular season starts next Thursday September 5, the NFL crams all of the Week Four preseason games into this Thursday. 16 games are on the board and we’ll do our best to show as many as possible.
NCAA College Football: Over four dozen major college games are on the schedule (and open for wagering) over the next four days starting with the UCLA Bruins at the Cincinnati Bearcats at 4 PM Thursday and ending with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish visiting the Louisville Cardinals just 100 miles south on I71 at 5 PM on Monday.
Additional seasonal action on the board includes Major League Baseball, Canadian Football, WNBA Basketball and Horse Racing. We’re also taking bets on this Sunday’s NASCAR Monster Energy Series Southern 500.
Futures Bets on the board include the 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup, 2019 World Series, 2020 NCAA Football Championship, 2020 Super Bowl, 2020 NBA Championship and 2020 Stanley Cup.

A Friend, Nohema, Glenda & Michael Toasting Lightning Strikes!

Lightning Strikes Again!

Early this spring Glenda and Glenn moved to our area and we’ve gotten to know them as their new home is being built. They recently sustained a few “lightning strikes,” none of which caused any damage. About two weeks ago the Major Jackpot on the Lightning Link slot bank near the Cabaret along the Hwy 395 wall hit Glenda for under a thousand dollars – more like a bee sting. The big bolt came from the Grand Jackpot on the same slot bank when it struck Glenda for $11,718 last week. It was Glenn who shared this jackpot news with Julie in our Marketing Department. She was skeptical at first ‘cause he told it like one of the fishing stories that often is “spun” after Glenn has been out fishing with CVI’s MOD Malcolm and bartender Matt. In this tale, Glenn’s wife Glenda got the two fish (the money) and Glenn got to tell the story!!

Battle of the Badges Blood Drive Thursday

Historically blood donations drop by as much as 20% or more during the summer months. The Northern Nevada, Northern California area needs about 150 units of blood a day and you can help make sure that we have a safe blood supply for patients in our community by donating this Thursday at the CVI! The Battle of the Badges Blood Drive runs from 10 AM to 6 PM and the folks from Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services) will have their bloodmobiles set up in our west lot along Hwy 395. All donors receive a Free Battle of the Badges T-Shirt while they last and you can make an appointment by clicking here or simply show up, tell ‘em Buffy sent you, and they’ll squeeze you in!

We’d like to claim we wined and dined an influencer and this was the result. However, unless we’re missing something, we can’t trace the origin back to anything we did. So, whoever suggested these folks look at Katie’s, thank you!

Tedi Burger & Friends Kicking It Up at the Minden Moo Last Weekend

We, and a lot of you, had a fun time at the Minden Moo last Friday and Saturday as we celebrated the Carson Valley Inn’s 35th Birthday. Our thanks go out to all who participated in the Mechanical Bull Riding competition, Horseshoes Tournament, Western Dancing, Justin Lee Concert and other events. A special thanks to Coors and to the 4H members and their parents for helping Saturday night. Concertgoers’ generosity resulted in adding over $800 to the Douglas County 4-H Leader’s Council fund for those always-present unexpected expenses.

Thursday is Burger Day. We like the simplicity of this statement attributed to New York restaurateur and Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer: “At the base level, a burger is a piece of meat and a bun with something on it. It’s simple but it seems to make a lot of people happy.” We serve a variety of burgers at all four of our properties seven days a week and we’ll admit that we don’t adhere to Mr. Meyer’s simplification approach. You say you’d like to volunteer to help in our community but you’re not sure where to go or who to call? The 2019 Leadership Douglas County Class is making it very easy to consider all the possibilities with 40 organizations scheduled to be at the first annual Volunteer Expo Douglas County this Thursday, August 22 from 3:30 -7:00 PM at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center. Admission is Free and it’s a great opportunity for adults and children to learn where and how they can help!

Bunko for Breast Cancer Getting Close

Your chance of winning Bunco is 1 in 12. In the United States, a woman's chance of being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer is 1 in 8. These odds, and the women and men it affects, is the reason why BHGE has hosted Bunko for Breast Cancer since 2004 donating over $300,000 in support of the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center. The annual event takes place in our Valley Ballroom every fall and it’s now just two months away on Saturday, October 19. Whose side are you going to take, the Fire Department’s or the Sheriffs? It’s all part of the fun associated with the Battle of the Badges Blood Drive next Thursday, August 29. Every day in the U.S., patients in hospitals, surgical centers and emergency treatment facilities need approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells. You can help make the sure blood needs of our community are covered by signing up to donate right here at the CVI next Thursday. Football junkies (oh, that is so many of us!) take note: The NCAA football season officially kicks off this Saturday when the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors host the Arizona Wildcats at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu and – 4,600 miles away in Gainesville – the Miami Hurricanes visit the Florida Gators at “The Swamp.” Only two games, but that means Football is Back and you can bet them at CVI!
Additional seasonal action on the board includes Pre-Season NFL Football (yawn), Major League Baseball, Canadian Football, WNBA Basketball and Horse Racing. The NASCAR Monster Energy Series is off this week.
