If It’s Too Loud, We’ll Give You Earplugs - and More From the Carson Valley Inn

A Calmer Moment from 2018 Bunko for Breast Cancer
If It’s Too Loud, We’ll Give You Earplugs!
It’s just two weeks until the loudest event of the year in our Valley Ballroom – The annual Bunko for Breast Cancer from 5 to 10 PM on Saturday, October 19! Why so loud?  Think of how boisterous it can get with 12  people playing bunco . . . now imagine the frivolity and noise when you have 20 times that many whooping it up in the same room! Happens every year in October and ALL the proceeds benefit the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center. Among their many ways of helping: support to local breast cancer patients in the form of financial assistance for treatment, medication, and other related costs; transportation to and from treatment; and many other programs. Play is open to individuals or teams of 12, and registration must be made online. The 2019 theme is World Cultures-International so dress the part and get in on the early bird pricing good through this Friday, October 4. As for the earplugs – there will be some on every table if the noise is too much for you! And if you are part of an association that conducts fundraisers, call Carrie in our Sales Department at 775-783-6673 to find out about holding your event in our Valley Ballroom!

Our Scary Neighbors!
Yep – we have scary neighbors . . . but we love ‘em! We’re talking about some of the very creative characters at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office – located just steps from our front casino entrance. First some background: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit is one of the best in the state! This all-volunteer unit is ready and equipped to respond at a moment’s notice to everything from rapid-water rescues to complex mountain recoveries to wide-spread searches in rough terrain. One of their major fundraisers is going on every Friday and Saturday through October - Fright Night at the Fairgrounds! This annual attraction is produced each year by Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies and civilian volunteers who donate their time planning, building, decorating and operating the event.  Big scares, screams and fun and excitement for all ages and all for a good cause. So, while we do have some scary neighbors, we hope you’ll join us in helping them scare up some funds for the all-volunteer Search and Rescue Unit! For information, click here and be sure to catch the video trailer above.

Fall Frolicking Steps from Sharkey’s
Build your own scarecrow, coffin races, pumpkin raffle, crafts and much more will be taking place at Heritage Park this Saturday just a half block from our sister property Sharkey’s Casino. It’s all part of the Main Street Gardnerville Main Street Fall Fest and we hope you’ll enjoy the fun . . . plus a quick bite to eat at Sharkey’s Jackpot Café before or after!

From the Sports & Race Book
  • Sports Book Mike’s Musings:
    • Craziest weekend so far: NFL favorites only covered in 5 of the 15 games (2 teams had byes).  Eight of the dogs won games outright, with five of those winning while on the road.  One guaranteed road winner this week, as the NFL returns to London with the Bears vs Raiders.
    • Michigan bounced back last week with a win over Rutgers.  Generally, all Big 10 schools get a bounce with Rutgers, as the Scarlet Knights only average one win a year in Big 10 play.  In a bit of a twist, Rutgers fired their coach after the game, "we lost to Harbaugh?"
    • The long awaited baseball playoffs started this week.  Four teams reached 100 wins this year, so one could make a strong case for any of them or maybe the A's?
    • Hockey puck drops today.  The two teams with the most local interest get things started by playing each other tonight: the San Jose Sharks are in Vegas to take on the Golden Knights. Go team - whichever is yours!
  • Our Pro Pick’em Progressive Jackpot is at $3,047 this week. Pick all 15 NFL winners on our weekly $5 Parlay Card and it’s yours. Each week it is not “hit,” the jackpot climbs based on the collective contest play at the CVI, Sharkey’s Casino, Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino.
  • Football Extras:
    • $2 Coors Light Draft at the Casino Bar or in the Cabaret Lounge during all televised NFL and College Games.
    • A couple of Free NFL Hats given away for each of the teams playing every Monday Night Football Game.
    • Bar Snacks Delivered to Your Seat while you watch or play. Get the full menu and pricing at this link!
    • Poker Room Squares Pool: Earn squares as you play in live poker games during the week. Each week we kick in $160 and the payout is on the Monday Night Football Game – $40 to the winners of the first three quarters and the final score. Any unclaimed quarters roll to the next week and for the October 7 Browns/Niners game it’s $97 a quarter!!
  • Seasonal Action on the board includes NFL and NCAA Football, Major League Baseball Playoffs, NHL Hockey, Canadian Football, WNBA Basketball Championships, Horse Racing and this Sunday’s NASCAR Monster Energy Series Drydene 400 at Dover.
  • Futures Bets on the board include: 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup, 2019 World Series, 2020 NCAA Football Championship, 2020 Super Bowl, 2020 NCAA College Basketball, 2020 NBA Championship and 2020 Stanley Cup.
Fish Tacos in Katie's
Special Days This Week
  • Today is National Walk to School Day and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has asked that “drivers should watch for children walking and bicycling to school and be mindful of school zone speed reductions, as well as varying school start times.” Turns out NDOT has a page on their website specifically devoted to walking and bicycling to school and also has a Walking and Bicycling Summit coming up in early November!
  • Today is Name Your Car Day. We think that’s a bit over the top. But, we are OK with giving some thought to what you’ll name your motorcycle if you are the lucky winner of a Harley here at the CVI on October 30. Someone will win it – might as well be ready with a name!
  • Friday is Vodka Day There are lots of Vodkas these days and we serve a variety at the CV Steak Bar. Our suggestion for Vodka Day (or any day) is the Bently Heritage Source One Single Estate Vodka distilled from oats that were grown on the Bently Ranch in Minden.
  • Friday is also Taco Day. Our suggestion? Enjoy the Fish Tacos in Katie’s with grilled white fish, tangy slaw, rice and beans. It’s one of our six $7.99 Plates served daily from 11 AM to 10 PM.

College Football at the Inn, Uniforms Again this Weekend, A Chance for a Do-Over, More

This Past Weekend Over Take Tahoe
Many hundreds of incredible photos of the USAF Thunderbirds and other performers at the Aviation Roundup were posted on various Facebook pages and Community Forums over the last weekend. However, even the most credentialed local photographer didn't have the vantage point of the person with one of the coolest jobs in the world: the photojournalist assigned to the United States Air Force Thunderbirds team! The above picture is one of over a dozen Reno/Tahoe aerial shots in this posting on the Thunderbirds Facebook page.

College Football – So Many Games!
So Many College Games All at the Same Time!
Turns out there are 130 schools in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAAOn a weekend without byes, that means over 60 games could be going on, many at the same time. This can present two challenges to the average college football fan trying to watch at home: First, and this applies especially if you have action on a few different games: How do you keep track of multiple games at the same time? Fortunately, this is not a problem in our Cabaret lounge where we can be showing a dozen or more different games all happening simultaneously. You can easily watch four or five games at the same time, just depends on how fast your head turns and how quickly your brain keeps up!  Second, let’s say your favorite team is never on conventional TV or cable coverage. If the team you are following has a game available on our satellite service, we’ll do our best to get it on one of the Cabaret Bar TVs! Just check with the bartender and they will futz with the dial while you get started on a $2 draft beer (yes, that special deal is available during all televised college games as well as NFL games!) That same friendly bartender will be glad to order one or more of our Bar Bites for you to enjoy . . . . Just remember where you left your beer when you start scanning seven or eight different games on a Saturday afternoon!
Uniforms Galore This Saturday in Valley Ballroom
More Uniforms at CVI This Weekend for a Great Cause
There were lots of uniforms, flight suits and fit young military folks around the CVI last weekend with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, U.S. Army Golden Knights and the U.S. Navy and Canadian F-18 Tack Demo Teams all staying here for the Aviation Roundup. Expect to see even more of a variety of uniforms and some older and not-quite-as-trim folks at the CVI this Saturday night as Uniform Dress is the theme for this year's annual Bunko for Breast Cancer event in the Valley Ballroom. In addition to military you'll see law enforcement, firefighters, healthcare, construction workers and whatever else the participants' imaginations, creativity and available wardrobes can conjure up! Thanks to an impressive list of raffle prizes, an energetic and enthusiastic volunteer staff at GE, and a worthwhile cause, the event itself is sold out. However you can still help by donating an item or service to be auctioned during the evening (email bunko4breastcancer@ge.com right away) or by making a monetary donation online at www.carsontahoe.com/bunko.  100% of all funds raised at this event are donated to Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center enabling them to sponsor the Casting for Recovery Program as well as purchase mastectomy camisoles, wigs and many other medical necessities.

Food and the “Do Over” Concept
  • Today is Take Your Parents to Lunch Day.  We applaud the many folks we see in Katie's doing this on a frequent basis. For those of us who haven't thought of it in a while, whether it's today or you make plans to do so in the coming weeks, please take your parents to lunch. Naturally we hope you'll choose Katie's here at the Carson Valley Inn, the Jackpot Café in Sharkey's Casino or the restaurant in Bodines Casino.
  • Tomorrow is Pulled Pork Day.  The nice thing about a blog is we can stretch a little. So, while we don't offer pulled pork at CVI, we do at Bodines Casino for just $4.99 including slaw and fries. AND, while not pork, we do offer three different types of sliders on the Bar Bites menu at the Silver Dollar Bar in Sharkey's: Burger Sliders, Turkey Sliders, and Irish Sliders (corn beef). Try ‘em all!
  • Friday is World Egg Day.  Whether you like two eggs over easy or a build-it-yourself three egg omelet, Katie's and our sister properties offers a full variety of egg options with many breakfast items served 24 hours in Katie's. Other egg dishes: Eggs Benedict available at both CVI and Bodines plus the Benedict Bowl at Sharkey's Casino. All 3 properties serve French Toast which is dipped in an egg wash and CVI has the Monte Cristo which is also egg battered. Heck, some of our house-made pastries are also topped with a meringue topping!
  • Tuesday is Mulligan Day. The term started with the concept of taking a "do over" shot in golf  (read the PGA's explanation) but is now used in describing any kind of  do-over in life. So, take Tuesday to rekindle an old relationship, restart a hobby that faded away or face and tackle whatever you want to "do over."  Since we most often use the term Mulligan relating to golf around the CVI, here's a reminder that now is the time to be booking your group’s 2018 golf visit to stay at the Carson Valley Inn and play one or more of the many golf courses in our area. Just give Greg a call at 775-783-6615 and he’ll make it easy!  As to our favorite depiction of a Mulligan? It’s the movie The Best of Times with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. And there’s also the song Second Chance by 38 Special, one of the many groups who have appeared live in concert in TJ’s Corral.
Football and Other Sports Info
Enjoy a Bar Bite and $2 Draft While You Watch Football
  • Our Guys Picks: Greg reversed his previous week’s come back by going 0 -2 last week. This week he’s taking Navy at + 3.5 at Memphis and the Lions at +5 against the Saints.  Alan went 2 - 0 last week and this week likes the Jaguars at -2.5 hosting the Rams and Carolina at -3 against the Eagles. Mike split his picks last week and is especially proud of the Jets win over the Browns in what he referred to as “arguably the game of the day but nobody noticed or cared!” This week Mike likes the Niners at + 9.5 at Washington and Texas at +7.5 vs Oklahoma in the Red River shootout.
  • $2 Draft Beer during all Televised Pro and College football games at the CVI - and our staff will bring your bar bites order to you right at your seat.
  • The Progressive Pro PK'EM is at $3,099 this week. Cards are just $5 each!
  • NFL hats, tee shirts, Budweiser merchandise and other prizes are given away in drawings during Monday Night Football at the CVI. Also, three tickets are distributed each week for the Ultimate Tailgate Party package which will be given away during the Monday Night Football game on December 18.
  • Monday Night Football Grid in our poker room every week – we start with $160 each week and add in any unclaimed prizes from the previous week. This coming Monday we’re giving away $93 for each of the first three quarters and the final score . . . earn entries during live poker games ‘til all squares are claimed.
  • Place Your Bet: We are taking action on the Major League Baseball Playoffs, Horse Racing, Pro and College Football, NHL Hockey and the NASCAR Alabama 500 at the Talladega Speedway this Sunday. Futures on the board include winners for the World Series, 2018 Super Bowl, 2018 NCAA Basketball and Football Championships, 2018 NBA Championship and 2018 NHL Stanley Cup.
  • Sports tickets can be cashed-in at Guest Services when the Sports Book is closed. Horse Race tickets can be cashed only when the Race and Sports Book is open. Winning sports bets placed at any of our three casinos (CVI, Bodines and Sharkey’s) can be cashed at any of the three locations.

19 Bottled Beers at Bodines, Over a Dozen at CVI &
Sharkey's, plenty of draft choices, what's that add up to?

Not Another Beer Day!! Not to be confused with International Beer Day (August 5) or National Beer Day (April 7), today is National Drink Beer Day. Turns out that according to one survey, beer is America’s #1 social drink of choice (can you guess what came in second?), Americans love domestic beer over imported beer by a 2-to-1 margin and some states are more prone than others to have beer as the top drink to enjoy with friends at a bar or other social venue. We started counting up how many different bottled beers and draft beers we have between our two bars at the Carson Valley Inn, the Silver Dollar Bar at Sharkey’s Casino and the Casino Bar and the Sports Bar at Bodines Casino and . . . . well the total was close to one of the numbers in this song!

Bunko for Breast Cancer is coming up Saturday, October 8 and we hope you’re planning to attend this jubilant event with eclectically costumed wanna-be-sports-stars in our Valley ballroom. More information is available on the Bunko for Breast Cancer Web Page or the Bunko for Breast Cancer Facebook PageHowever you choose to get the information, please do get involved in some form or another – All proceeds support the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center!

  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $2986 – pick all 15 NFL games straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours!
  • Chatter around the Sportsbook: Lots of talk, speculation and action on three big college conference games this weekend between undefeated teams. Friday night, Stanford (3-0) battles Washington (4-0), midday Saturday Wisconsin travels to Michigan (both 4-0) and Saturday evening Louisville takes on Clemson (both 4-0).  On the NFL front, the Raiders (2-1) continued to draw more interest (and more bets!) for their Sunday morning game against the undefeated Ravens. You can watch and bet these games plus many more here at the CVI.

Penny Progressive Climbing Faster! “Old hat” to Carson Valley Inn players, we recently (like last week) linked our popular Penny Progressive to Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino. Now 26 slots are feeding the jackpot which is naturally growing at a more rapid rate. Steve Forrester, our “Corporate” Slot Director (he hates it when we give him a title like that) jump-started the idea many months ago based upon comments from our Bodines and Sharkey’s customers who were nudging us with “hey, why can’t we get in on this penny progressive jackpot!?” Centered on the Triple Red Hot 7's theme – one of IGT's most popular games – the jackpot increases based on play. A max coin bet is 90 cents and hitting the jackpot can be a prize in the tens of thousands of dollars. Our last 2 winners have pocketed over $95,000 each . . . but don't wait ‘cause it's hit anywhere from $10,000 on up.  Could mean a new car, new boat, one heck of a new wardrobe or a closet full of expensive new shoes and even the closet remodeling necessary to make room!  Someone playing these machines at CVI, Bodines or Sharkey’s will win . . . it could be you!

Going Bonkers for
Bunko for Breast Cancer
It’s a Bird, It’s Plane It’s a . . . .Bunco? Pamela Litka is like Clark Kent. During the day, she's a mild-mannered Projects Quality Coordinator for the GE plant in Minden. After hours, she turns into a dynamic Bunko for Breast Cancer Volunteers Committee Lead (we’re not sure exactly what that means, but she is such dynamo when it comes to this event that the title must bestow super powers!) Pamela and a group of focused GE employee volunteers spearhead the Bunko for Breast Cancer evening at the Carson Valley Inn every October in our Valley Ballroom. This year it’s on Saturday, October 8. Over the years this event has raised well into six figures for breast cancer care in Northern Nevada.  This is not your normal fundraiser. It is a raucous five hours of 200+ costumed and screaming (mostly female) bunco players who raise more hell – and more money – than any other event that takes place in our Valley Ballroom all year. Oh, and why “bunko” in some cases and “bunco” in others? Guess you’ll just have to stop by on October 8 to find out!

Sports and Race Book:
  • This week you can bet Major League Baseball, Horseracing, NFL and NCAA Football, WNBA Playoffs and Sunday’s New England 300 NASCAR race. Also on the board: futures bets on who will win the World Series, 2016 Season NCAA Football Championship and the February, 2017 Super Bowl.
  • The PRO PK’EM Parlay Progressive is now at $2832 – pick all 15 NFL games straight up on the $5 card and it’s yours!
  • Chatter around the Sportsbook after last weekend’s NFL games: After getting shutout by the Niners in Week 1, the crew in our Sports Book said nobody could get up the gumption to place a bet on the Rams last week. Not only did the Rams cover against Seattle, they won outright! The early trend this week is that no one seems to be ready to bet on the Bears for their Sunday night game against Dallas. Just wondering if there will be a correlation!

No Dancing on the Bus, Please! Actually, we are all in favor of dancing on the bus because the shuttle service between the Carson Valley Inn and the Genoa Candy Dance this Saturday and Sunday is run by the Town of Genoa, not by us . . .  so “they” make the rules! Whether you choose to sit calmly or dance in the aisles, everything you want to know about the Candy Dance is at this link and we suggest you read the specific information about the shuttle at this link.

What - Only One? Sunday is One Hit Wonder Day celebrating those artists who had their one big song . . . and then faded away not to be heard from again. Anyone remember these one-hit wonders: “Come on Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners? How about “Who Let the Dogs out?” by the Baha Men? Or stretching back further, “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” by Steam?  And then there's the infamous "Macarena" by Los del Río – ranked the "#1 Greatest One-Hit Wonder of All Time" by VH1 in 2002. In next week’s blog we’ll announce a November appearance in the Valley Ballroom by a country artist who was on the opposite end of the hit spectrum – he had 15 #1 hits back in the seventies and eighties! Meanwhile, what were your favorite one-hit wonders? Let us know in the comments section below.
