A Moo for You, TJ's as a Battlefield, Big Bucks for Boys & Girls Club, $83,057 Winner, More in CVI Blog

You’ll Love TJ’s Corral as a Battlefield!
One of Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo’s most iconic hits is Love is a Battlefield and you’ll hear this and many more of the duo’s classics when they perform live in TJ’s Corral on Wednesday, July 31!  Ticket sales have been brisk and we anticipate a sell out so please don’t delay. The status on our other concerts: Dwight Yoakam on July 26 is already sold out. Martina McBride on August 4 is close to being standing room only tickets. Loverboy on August 9 will wind up our traditional concert schedule unless something unexpected comes along. Tickets and more information for all concerts are available at This Link and be sure to check next week’s blog and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for additional concert news.

Moo . . . at 35!
There’s a headline that probably needs some explaining!! Here it is: The Carson Valley Inn is celebrating our 35th Birthday on August 16 & 17 with the Minden Moo – a two-day celebration honoring the long heritage and rich history of ranching and agriculture in the Carson Valley! You’ll enjoy food, beer, line dancing, live music, a mechanical bull riding contest, a horseshoe tournament, farmer’s market and a display of antique tractors and other ranching vehicles from local ranchers and collectors. And wait, here’s the best part: on Saturday night we’ve added a concert and video recording session by the Justin Lee Band at what we promise will be a price you just can’t beat! Get all the details on the Minden Moo by clicking here!

Mike Tice with Some Douglas Athletes Last Month
Boys & Girls Club Scores Over $200,000!
Thanks to the generous support of many Carson Valley residents and businesses, plus a significant donation from Carson Valley Inn owner Mike Pegram, over $200,000 was raised June 28 – 30 for the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada, Carson Valley Branch.  The majority of these funds will go toward the building of a new permanent facility for the youth here in the Carson Valley.  Monies were raised during the Mike Tice Charity Weekend For the Kids in several ways including sponsorships, the  Music/Food/Brewfest and the purchase of foursomes and fun contests associated with the golf tournament. More was raised through the live auction and special raffle at the awards dinner plus direct donations from locals and people across the country. In its nine years this event has raised over $1.2 million for the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, Carson Valley Branch. We’re almost there . . . THANKS to all who participated in any way!

Job Fair, Out with the Old, Mini Pies, More

Job Fair September 11
We’re actively hiring for all four of our properties, the Carson Valley Inn in Minden, Sharkey’s Casino in Gardnerville, and Bodines Casino and SlotWorld Casino in Carson City. We have both part-time and full-time positions available and we’d like to talk with you at our Job Fair on Tuesday, September 11 from 3 to 7 PM in the CVI Convention Center.  Not trained in the area in which you have an interest? No problem. If you have enthusiasm and an outgoing personality, we’ll train you for the job!

Part -Time: Perhaps you’re back in school and want a part-time job that fits your schedule? Perhaps your kids are back in school and you’d like to work a few hours a day?  Perhaps you are retired and miss the social interaction that working with the public provides?  Perhaps you have a full time job and would like part time work to subsidize your income or save for a special project or purchase?

Full-Time:  This is your opportunity to investigate our growing company for positions in all hospitality industry areas including food and beverage, hotel, casino, accounting, administrative, and more. Many of our current supervisors and managers started in entry-level positions – that’s what happens in a growing company and we would like to tell you more!

Department representatives will be at the Job Fair doing interviews and will be extending job offers to successful applicants.  Want to shortcut the process?  Stop at the Carson Valley Inn HR Department any time between now and September 11 or click on this link and download a fillable PDF job application. You can save it, complete the info, print it, and bring it with you to the Job Fair (or before if you wish).

Will 38 Special be "Caught Up in You"
on Friday, September 21?

“Caught Up In You” is one of 38 Special’s classic songs, first released on the band’s Special Forces album in 1982. Written by Don Barnes, Jeff Carlisi and Jim Peterik, this is just one of the group’s many hits you’ll hear in TJ’s Corral on Friday, September 21 when 38 Special closes out our 2018 concert season. You can buy tickets on our website or in person at the Hotel Front Desk.

This week, it’s the Banquet Department’s turn as new carpet is being installed in both the Valley Ballroom and West Wing of our convention center. We’ve also done quite a bit of updating in most of our hotel rooms in the last few months and we’ll be putting the finishing touches on many of the rooms (and posting pictures) as soon as business slows down this fall. We have a few other surprises coming this winter and you’ll read about it here in our weekly blog.

Christmas in July? Are We Your Best?

Creedence Ticket Sales Robust
Stu Cook and Doug "Cosmo" Clifford
Great concert by Trace Adkins last Saturday . . . and lots of last minute calls from fans wanting tickets after the concert was Sold Out. So, let’s get this out on the table: while it’s still over three weeks until Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford bring Creedence Clearwater Revisited into TJ’s Corral on Sunday evening, August 12, we are getting close to selling out the available seats. If you were a music fan in the late sixties and early seventies, you don’t want to miss out on the chance to experience the rock hits of CCR right here in Minden! We checked and there are still rooms available that night in both our Hotel and Motor Lodge so plan on making a night of it! Purchase concert tickets through our website which allows you to view the seating layout map and select your seat. You can also buy tickets in person at the Hotel Front Desk. Reservations for the Hotel, Motor Lodge and RV Park can be made on our website or by calling 775-783-6629.

Not Your Usual Christmas in July Blurb
We’ve all seen them . . . The Christmas in July Celebration headline followed by some type of a sale or push to get you to do something that usually gets handled in December. This isn’t one of those situations. What we do suggest is that you give some thought to whether you’ll be trying to organize a Christmas Party for your company, association, club or other organization. When December rolls around, we turn on the Christmas flair for parties held here at the Carson Valley Inn. Our banquet rooms have Christmas trees, wreaths and other holiday touches. The linens are holiday colors . . . and there’s Christmas background music. We even have specially themed buffets during December with entrées and ingredients appropriate to the Christmas season. And if you’re holding your party here at the CVI, we offer your guests a special room rate on the night of your party so there is a safe haven for those who choose to imbibe. Sound like something you should be looking at now or that you anticipate getting tasked with at the last minute? Then “get on it” by calling Carrie at 775-783-6673. We have plenty of weeknight availability in December… unfortunately all the weekends are already booked. However, here’s a thought that started to catch on during the last two years: if you’d rather not try to work your Christmas party around all of the other business and family events of December, why not give a little broader definition to the event and plan a celebration dinner in early January when we do have some weekend availability.

Speaking of Christmas . . .
Unless you jumped onto Prime Day on Amazon.com earlier this week you probably haven’t even started, or even began thinking about, your Christmas shopping. That’s OK, and we’re not suggesting you start buying stuff now. We are planting this seed: when it does come time to start Christmas shopping, wouldn’t it be nice to have a small stash of money already set aside? A perfect way to start your “stash” is with a part-time job at the Carson Valley Inn. Perhaps you’re soon heading back to school and will be available afternoons or evenings? Perhaps your kids are heading back to school and you’ll be available during the day? Or, perhaps it’s just time to buckle down and “get a job!”  Whatever your reasoning, please consider applying for one of these open positions at the CVI!

But It's Still July and It's Hot!
Did reading about Christmas cool you down during the triple-digit heat of this week? Probably not – didn’t work for us either! So consider this: our air-conditioning works great, we have plenty of cold beer at both of our bars and the frozen smoothies in Job’s Perk are a real chiller. This combination is a perfect reason to stop in at the Carson Valley Inn and beat the heat!

Are We the Best?
Lots of activity going on as local businesses jockey for position to win various categories in The Record Courier’s Best of Carson Valley 2018. To borrow a term from Febreze, you’d have to be “Nose Blind” to not have noticed at least some of the many ads, signs, social media posts, emails, and other pleas from Carson Valley businesses and organizations asking for your vote. Frankly, we don’t believe in that approach so we simply invite you to go to this link, read the brief instructions, select a category and get started. If you think we deserve your vote in a particular area, we’ll graciously accept  it with our thanks!

Sip ‘N’ Savor
We just have to give a shout out to our sister property Sharkey’s Casino as they always seem to be one of the centers of the frivolity during the Main Street Gardnerville Third Thursday Wine Walks! This Thursday will be no exception as the event takes on a Sip ‘N’ Savor theme which means that in addition to the wine and other beverages to enjoy at the various businesses, there will also be food trucks and food caterers strategically located along the way. The event runs from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM and all the details are at this link.

This Week in the Casino
  • Ladies’ Night Tonight: Join us from 5:30 to 8:30 PM with a Green Flower Night Lite for the first 150 ladies and Shelly Camp Gift Baskets as hot seat prizes.  Also tonight: games, raffles, a weekly drink special and free bingo.
  • Progressive Cash Giveaway Friday and Saturday:  Join us at 6, 7 and 8 PM when we hold drawings for cash, FreePlay and chances for the Progressive Cash Giveaway Jackpot.

This week you can  also bet The Open (British Open Golf Tournament), Major League Baseball, WNBA, Canadian Football League, the NASCAR Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Horseracing at all the other tracks. Futures include winners of the World Series, NASCAR Monster Energy Series, the NFL Conference Championships, the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2019 NCAA Football Championship and the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament!   Not that we and many or our customers are anxious, but College Football starts on Saturday, August 25 and the first NFL Game is Thursday, September 6!
  • Speaking of Horse Racing: Mike Pegram's colt Once On Whiskey won last Saturday's Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby!
Hot Dogs, Tequila and Creme Brule!!
  • Today is Hot Dog Day and July 26 (that's next Thursday) is Chili Dog Day. By our own admission, Job's Perk is not equipped to handle the talents and associated volume of Hot Dog Eating Champion Joey Chestnut! However, we do serve both Hot Dogs and Chili Dogs every day in "The Perk" and you can enjoy them as loaded or as simple as your appetite and tastes dictate!
  • Thursday is Daiquiri Day. You can't think Daiquiri without thinking Rum; and you can't think Rum without thinking Jimmy Buffet; and you can't think Jimmy Buffet without thinking Margarita; so just skip down to Tequila Day below!
  • Sunday is Crème Brule Day. Heavy cream, egg yolks, vanilla . . . all baked, topped with caramelized sugar and served warm. Now, hold that thought for the next time you want the perfect finale to a dinner in CV Steak!
  • Tuesday is Tequila Day. Tequila comes in everything from the "best suited for blended drinks" to the "seriously, how much is one bottle!" and many in between.  We've sat through presentations and tastings on the upper crusts of tequilas . . . but for today we suggest you just try whatever sounds appealing from this list of 35 Tequila Drinks More Exciting Than a Margarita! How many can the CVI bartenders make? Well, if you go there, please don't mention that you read about it in our blog . . . they all like us blog writers now and we'd like to keep it that way!
In Our Restaurants
  • Wednesday is Italian Day in Katie’s – three specials for $6.99 each served from 11 AM to 10 PM! The Friday and Saturday night special in Katie’s is Roasted Prime Rib & Fried Shrimp for $14.99 served from 4 PM.

Sports BBQ, Craps Carousel, Get Your Foot in Our Door, More

One of the Ten Best Steakhouses in Nevada!
CV Steak in the Spotlight
We’ve always touted CV Steak as one of the best values in northern Nevada – and that’s certainly been supported by our customer comments whether in-person, by email, on social media, through online reviews or the old fashioned comment cards. We received another vote of support recently when Best Things Nevada ranked CV Steak #5 on their list of The 10 Best Steakhouses in Nevada! Puts us in some pretty good company when you consider the many high-end steak houses in Las Vegas alone.

Winnie Won – Wow!
Okay, so it’s not as exciting as the million-dollar Wheel of Fortune winner or the three $10,000+ Lightning Link jackpot payouts we mentioned in our blog last week. However, Winnie’s $4500 payout on one of our Triple Play Poker machines was fun to see because she’s in here all the time and is one of those “how can you not love her” regulars. We even saw some of her personality come out a couple of nights later when we ran into her entering CV Steak with some family for dinner. One of us flippantly said to her “congratulations, we hear you’re buying tonight!” She never missed a beat with her retort, said with a gleam in her eyes and a wink, “As a matter of fact, I am!”

Play Craps for a Quarter?
Yep, $.25 is the minimum bet on the new Shoot to Win Craps™ Carousel at our sister property Bodines Casino. This player-initiated CRAPS game recreates all the betting zones of the traditional table game. With an easily understood HELP menu and BET screens, all players ranging from beginner to expert can enjoy this popular game. If playing live craps is somewhat intimidating to you, these new slots are a great way to learn the game without anyone poking you to move faster. And as you get more comfortable, we welcome you to join us here at the CVI for live craps on Thursday thru Saturday evenings. Because we know you’ll probably ask, we checked with Steve Forester, our corporate slot guru, and asked him when we might have one of these flashy Craps Carousels here at the CVI. His answer, “it’s coming!”

Support DHS Sports Programs at the BBQ this Saturday
Looks like the weather will be quite nice for the Douglas High School Athletics Memorial Dinner happening in TJ’s Corral this Saturday, from 4:30 PM to 7 PM. The event is a combined effort of Block D, the DHS Athletic Department and the DHS All Sports Boosters and the whole purpose is to raise money for all the DHS sports programs. Tickets are just $25 for a generous BBQ buffet with all the trimmings and you can purchase tickets from members of any of these teams: Football, Cross Country, Tennis, Volleyball, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer and Girls Golf.

Get Your Foot in Our Door

  • Today is Tourism Day.  Thanks to the many out-of-town visitors who stay at the Carson Valley Inn and dine in our Valley’s restaurants, buy gas, partake in the many events and recreational activities in our area and generally bolster our economy!
  • Thursday is Drink Beer Day.  No, we're not going to list all of the different beers we have available by the bottle and on tap at the various bars at the CVI, Bodines Casino and Sharkey’s Casino . . . But we kinda did just remind you about the possibilities!
  • Sunday is the start of October and with it a number of "National Months," one of which is National Pizza Month. Just another quick reminder that the fresh-made, hand-tossed pizza at Bodines Casino is the best!
  • Sunday is International Coffee Day. Bringing it back to something we can get our arms around: stop by Job’s Perk and enjoy one of our many coffee specialty drinks.
  • Monday is Name Your Car Day another reminder that there can be a holiday for just about anything all thanks to the proliferation of the Internet and social media. It got to the point recently that one writer decided to use “Talk like a Pirate Day” to write this article about made-up holidays.
  • Really not trying to bury this one, but it needs to be mentioned: Saturday is the last day for the Carson Valley Airporter shuttle service between the Carson Valley and the Reno Tahoe International Airport. The transportation grant use to help fund the service was not renewed due to low ridership.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge
The RYE Brothers tonight through Saturday, NFL Football on Sunday and Monday and The Novelists Tuesday and Wednesday. The Rye Brothers are a “power-pop” country act, mixing contemporary country music and rock n’ roll guitar driven songs. The Novelists acoustic duo provides cliffhanger storytelling, dual lead singing personalities and their signature harmonies.
