Nevada Coach at CVI, Incredible Soaring Video, Mother's Day Dining, Hockey and TJ's, More

Wolf Pack Football Coach Here Tuesday,
Come Meet Him!
The Nevada football team finished strong last year winning two of their last three games. So, what will the 2018 season bring? Who are the strong recruits or returning players expected to make a difference? What about the new coaches and what they bring to the table? What’s the outlook for senior quarterback Ty Gangi and the two hot sophomore receivers in the Spring Game, Elijah Cooks and McLane Mannix? What did coach Norvell glean from the 2017 season that he hopes will pay dividends for this year?  Get the answers to these questions and any other questions you’d like to ask when The Wolf Pack Caravan with Coach Norvell comes to the Carson Valley Inn on Tuesday evening, May 15.   Admission is free and light refreshments will be served starting at 5:30 PM with the program scheduled from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. If you plan to attend, please give Holly a heads up at 775-682-6961. If you decide to drop in on the “day of,” feel free to do so!

A Hockey Rink Would Fit Inside TJ’s Corral,
So What?
Hockey fans already know this story and sports fans who don’t usually follow hockey are starting to take note: the Vegas Golden Knights, an NHL first-year expansion team that didn’t exist last season, won the NHL Pacific Division, has handily made it past the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs and they’re going on to the Western Conference Championship Round. With more Nevada eyes now on hockey, we’ll take this opportunity to give you an idea of how close to the action you are at a concert in TJ’s Corral.

A hockey rink will just fit inside the audience area of TJ’s Corral. If you’re sitting on the scorekeepers bench at center ice, the distance you see straight across to the other side of the rink is about the distance from the front of the stage to the back of the audience area on the raised grass. The “nosebleed seats” in TJ’s Corral (we really don’t have such a thing, but we are talking about hockey so it seemed appropriate) would be from the scorekeepers bench (front of the stage in TJ’s) to the far corners (Boards) of the hockey rink (standing in the grass area as far from the stage as possible). If you’ve ever sat or stood center ice against the glass at a hockey rink, you know that’s pretty darn close.

Now that we’ve established there really isn’t a bad seat in the house, here’s a reminder of what’s coming up: The Righteous Brothers: Bill Medley & Bucky Heard kick off the concert season on  Friday, May 25 with their romantic sounds that defined the sixties and seventies and have continued to stand the test of time. Country is the theme for the following three concerts with Travis Tritt on Friday, June 1; Granger Smith Featuring Earl Dibbles Jr. on Saturday, June 16; and Clint Black on Friday, June 29. We then switch to rock with Ted Nugent on Wednesday, July 4; back to country when Trace Adkins visits on Saturday, July 14; and wrap it up with more classic rock with Creedence Clearwater Revisited on Sunday, August 12.

Your best and fastest bet for purchasing tickets for any TJ’s Corral concert is through our website which allows you to see the seating layout map and pick your seat(s) for one or more concerts in one transaction. You can also purchase tickets in person at our Hotel Desk. Back to the Vegas Golden Knights and another tie to TJ’s Corral: the team has already sold out its season tickets for the 2018/2019 season. The analogy? A couple of our concerts just have a few tickets left so please consider this a friendly nudge!

Mother’s Day is Sunday
We Still Have Room for You!
So many times we get down to a few days before a holiday and we are pretty much “sold out” of available reservations for dinner. However, with the addition of so much more capacity due to our Champagne Brunch, we still have room for you for Mother’s Day this Sunday. Please join us at our Champagne Brunch in the Valley Ballroom from 10 AM to 2 PM (call 775-783-7768 for Brunch reservations) or Mother’s Day Specials plus the regular dinner menu in CV Steak (call 775-783-6650 for CV Steak reservations.) In Katie’s we’re serving the regular menu plus a Seafood Omelet from 7 to 11 AM and Grilled Salmon Oscar from 11 AM until 9 PM.

Soaring Above the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe
Soaring or gliding . . . call it what you may, but definitely put it on your bucket list and be sure to make it happen here in Carson Valley. Soaring NV at Minden-Tahoe Airport (5 minutes from CVI) offers a variety of soaring experiences with spectacular views of the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. Many Carson Valley Inn hotel guests have come back marveling about the visual sensation. The 360° video above gives you an idea   . . .  but sitting in the front seat and being able to see over a hundred miles in any direction in almost complete silence is something you just have to experience!

Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker
Actually, we’re up to snuff on the butcher, baker and candlestick maker openings here at the CVI. However, we are looking for cooks, a banquet steward, coffee bar attendant, front desk clerk, marketing coordinator and a few other positions. See all the openings at this link and consider applying for one of these positions. We can honestly tell you there’s never a dull day at the Carson Valley Inn! Oh, and as long as we're being honest, we do not, nor never did we, employ a candlestick maker . . . even back when candles were allowed on the tables in CV Steak and at banquets!

Stay Up All Night, Eat What You Want!
Are we really suggesting that you abandon all restraint? Only marginally, read on.
  • Today is Third Shift Worker’s Day and we salute the CVI employees who stay up all night keeping the Carson Valley Inn open for those of you who wander in during the wee hours of the night. Thanks also to the law enforcement, fire department, paramedics, doctors, and others who work graveyard shift and are there for us when we need them!
  • Ironically, Thursday is Stay Up All Night Day. We suppose this is no cause for celebration for those who work the third shift and we applaud whoever came up with this day for their highly complex recommendation as to how to best celebrate the occasion . . . And this straight from the page at the link above: “The best way to celebrate this night is to stay up all night.” Whew - we never would’ve figured that out on our own!
  • Friday is Eat What You Want Day and our only guess is that this “special day” was instituted for those who simply want to continue the overindulgence of last Sunday’s No Diet Day.
  • Sunday is Top Gun Day which we only mentioned because it reminds us how absolutely incredible it was to have Kenny Loggins perform Danger Zone in TJ’s Corral last summer!
  • Tuesday is Chocolate Chip Day. This one’s a no-brainer: go directly to Job’s Perk or the Katie’s Bakery Counter, buy one or more chocolate chip cookies, consume immediately or at your pleasure!

Chris Twomey tonight, Jo Mama Thursday through Saturday, Carolyn Dolan and Big Red Sunday and Monday and Roem Baur Tuesday thru Thursday. Chris Twomey’s roots are deep into a genre of folk-rock . . . from 2Me to The Diva Kings to Dad's LPs to whatever is next.  Jo Mama conveys the same high energy whether they are playing funk, Latin, blues, swing, rock, country or calypso.  The group features Paul Covarelli on guitar and vocals, drummer Bill Heise lays down the back beat, Rocky Taterelli horns in on smokin' sax and Nancy Barker rounds it out on keyboards and vocals.  Carolyn Dolan can dive into powerful R & B, deliver a smooth jazz standard or a gentle country ballad.  Roem Baur is a multiple award-winning touring songwriter and classically trained opera singer who ultimately answered the call of rock n' roll.

Kenny Loggins Next, Clare Dunn Speaks Out, Wine and Burgers Get Their Day, More

Aaron Watson featuring special guest Clare Dunn Concert on Friday, June 16: Clare Dunn says this about her playful pop rocker “Move On” from her title album: “It’s just a fun little ditty about a girl wanting a guy to put the move on her. There’s nothing wrong with the girl making the first move, but I personally am too shy to do it. This was just an experience that I went through, just trying to give this guy a hint.” Catch her personality in the video above and read more about this exceptionally talented singer/songwriter in  this first-person interview article posted by Tim Parsons of Tahoe OnStage after interviewing her extensively by phone a few days ago.

More Concert and Event Updates
  • The Lee Brice Concert last Saturday was incredible – perfect weather, a full house, exceptional sound (their sound guy is world-class) and energy over the top! Plenty of pictures were posted on social media and our album is at this link on Facebook. If you are a Facebook user, please like, follow and extol the virtues of both the Carson Valley Inn and TJ’s Corral. If you are not a Facebook user, please don’t take this as our encouragement for you to start . . . It can be addicting, time-consuming and infuriating . . .but also informative, entertaining and just plain fun!
  • Kenny Loggins Concert on Friday, June 9: We added a few more tickets earlier this week but they are selling fast. Please, if you’re planning to attend, don’t wait too much longer.
  • Also coming up in TJ’s Corral:
Hear Coach Norvell's Plan
for 2017 Tonight at the CVI!
Hear Nevada Football Coach at CVI – Tonight!
Nevada Football coach Jay Norvell will be in our Sierra Room tonight to share his vision for the Nevada Football new-look offensive and defensive schemes for the 2017 season. The Nevada Coaches’ Caravan will also include basketball coaches Eric Musselman and Amanda Levens as schedules permit for the Wolf Pack hoops coaches. Doors open at 5:45 PM and after a brief presentation starting just after 6, the coaches will be available for questions. The “Coaches’ Caravan” is free and open to the public. A courtesy RSVP to Holly Aycock at (775) 682-6961 is requested if you read this in time – otherwise just show up and get the inside story first hand!

Our Wine Selection in CV Steak is Stellar!
Thursday is National Wine Day so we started asking some questions about the wine list in CV Steak and our own Jean-Michel Labadie was quite informative. “CV Steak opened in 2010 which by anyone’s definition turned out to be the high point of the recession.  We were close to some of the world's finest wine areas located in central and northern California, so we started featuring those wines and monitoring what people ordered, liked and requested.” As time went on it became obvious that, other than a few Champagne, Reisling, Pinot Grigio and other specialty wines, California varietals are what our customers wanted. To this day, most of our Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Meritage offerings are from either Napa Valley or other nearby wine areas. “The California wines we offer are as good as any wines available internationally and we offer over two dozen of our 70+ selections by-the-glass.”  Enough talk – time to stop by CV Steak for dinner or even just an appetizer and let us help you pair a wine or two to your food choices.

Read About Our Favorite Burger
at Each of Our Three Locations
.
Sunday is National Hamburger Day and we offer them in different configurations in Katie’s, The Jackpot Café in Sharkey’s Casino and the restaurant in Bodines Casino. Our favorite if we have to pick just one? Well first consider that the Carson Valley Inn is the big brother casino and both Sharkey’s and Bodines are our sister casinos. Having established that family hierarchy, we offer the following "favorite" at the risk of aggravating big brother and one of the sisters: we like the Volcano Burger at Sharkey’s stuffed with ghost pepper cheese and chorizo, topped with more ghost pepper cheese and spicy secret sauce! But, these two are both a close second: The Bodines Restaurant Double Cheese Burger with beer-battered French fries and Katie’s Smoke House Burger - double bacon, cheddar cheese and hickory BBQ sauce. Here’s the best part: you can take your time over a few days and experience them all! Get a myriad of interesting burger facts in this article.

Hans Eberbach tonight, Arizona Jones Thursday thru Saturday and The Novelists acoustic duo Sunday thru Tuesday. Vocalist and songwriter Hans Eberbach has released a solo album, “Up Is The Only Way Out” and he also sings for Joy & Madness and fronts his own band HANS! and the HOT MESS a band that represents his original singer/songwriter/electronic soul work. In a scene so often dominated by technology and gimmicks, Arizona Jones prefers to do it the old fashioned way - live and personal. And when they put their rockin' spin on classic R&B hits from the 60's and 70's, you never know who'll be singing louder, the audience or the band. They play the hits from Aerosmith and Amy Winehouse to Wilson Pickett and ZZ Top . . . and many artists in between. The Novelists acoustic duo provides cliffhanger storytelling, dual lead singing personalities and their signature harmonies.

Nevada Football Coach at CVI, Thanksgiving Dinner for 10 to Go, Community Food Drive, More

Raise Your Hand if you and your family of four have been invited to someone's house for Thanksgiving dinner and told you don't have to bring anything, the complete dinner will be provided, they want you to come early to watch football and not even participate in the preparation. Hmm, not very many hands went up. Now, raise your hand if you're still trying to  figure out what to do about Thanksgiving dinner and you really don't want to go through all the shopping, cleaning, cutting, slicing, cooking etc. but, you'd still like to have a nice home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner served for your family and friends on your dining room table and leftovers the next day! Aha, a lot more hands went up! As you might imagine – because we never would've brought it up if this weren't the case – we have a solution: order one of our Thanksgiving Turkey Dinners To Go for up to 10 people for just $89 and all you have to worry about is inviting a few friends, setting the table, serving the food, and cleaning up afterwards. Sound a lot simpler? You bet it does! How can you get such a deal? Click here and a flyer tells you how!

Tough Game Last Week Coach.  While the Nevada Wolf Pack didn’t make it into the “Win” column last Saturday at Wyoming, the stage is still set for their game against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors this Saturday. Two days later – that’s this Monday, October 26 – Wolfpack Coach Brian Polian will be holding his weekly Blitz Lunch in our Valley Ballroom and all Pack fans are invited to attend. If you have been to one of these luncheons you know they’re pretty informal, always informative, and certainly affordable at just $17.  Coach usually brings one of the key players and always brings some “behind the scenes” explanations of the game film he shares with the audience. No reservations are necessary, just show up when we start gathering at 11:30 a.m. Lunch is buffet style and Coach’s presentation immediately follows lunch.

CV Steak Garners Quite a Nice Review! Local resident Michele Armstrong publishes a blog under the title Small Town Living in Nevada and she paid us a visit in CV Steak last week. Follow her story about enjoying our Escargot, 14 oz. Rib Eye Steak, Surf N Turf, Nevada Grill and all the trimmings!

Burger Wars: Vote once each day thru this Thursday (that’s tomorrow!) in the 2015 Burger Wars poll being conducted by carsonvalleytimes.com. The Volcano is our entry from the Jackpot Café in Sharkeys Casino. This is the way to go if you’re looking for the good old-fashioned cowboy spicy hot taste in a burger.  The Gourmet Burger is served in CV Steak and it comes in two versions: The French Disaster and The American Disaster. You can read all about them and cast your vote on this page.

Disney Characters Run Amok in the CVI Valley Ballroom! What is this . . . a sensationalist headline from The Enquirer?  Well, there's some sensationalism and a lot of truth because it pretty well describes what you'll see Saturday night in our Valley Ballroom when the 15th Annual Bunko for Breast Cancer kicks in right around 6 PM. Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center is the beneficiary as over 200 costumed and boisterous enthusiasts play bunco, scream, party and generally push the limits of sanity. The event is graciously organized and enthusiastically run by the many volunteers at the Minden GE plant. It’s still not too late to get involved in the evening’s play  . . . call Sheila at 775 215-1626 or Pamela at 775-215-1001.

Share Your Christmas: Christmas . . .  already?! Don’t act surprised – it’s already happening in many stores. We can’t escape it, so join in by grabbing your phone, tablet or paper calendar and marking Friday, December 11 for the annual KTVN 22nd Annual Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive.

Race and Sports Book:
  • This week you can watch and bet Horseracing, Major League Baseball playoff games, NFL and College Football, and Sunday’s NASCAR CAMPINGWORLD.COM 500 At Talladega Speedway.
  • The PRO PK’EM jackpot is up to $3,495 on this week’s progressive parlay card. Remember, pick all the games straight up and you win!
  • Games our sports book crew is following with interest this weekend (in addition to our “local” teams): Cal vs. UCLA Thursday, Utah vs. USC Saturday, and Patriots vs. Jets and Cowboys vs. Giants on Sunday.

The Blues Monsters
Cabaret Lounge Entertainment – No Cover, No Minimum – Free! George Pickard performs tonight; entertainment takes a night off on Thursday so we can show the 49ers - Seahawks game. The Blues Monsters are in Friday and Saturday nights, NFL Football is on Sunday and Monday Nights and Jonathan "JB" Barton appears next Tuesday and Wednesday. The Blues Monsters are a red-hot rockin' blues band performing a powerfully unique combination of R&B, funk, jazz, and Chicago-style blues – this one is a "don't miss." Whether paying respects to the masters of traditional blues, or rockin' out other tunes, The Blues Monsters get the whole house up and dancing! The Forty Niners and Seahawks are struggling NFL teams and, believe it or not, the winner is guaranteed at least a tie for 2nd in the NFC West Division.

Lee Rocker's Big Bass, Quarterback Club Returns, HI-Flying Motorcycles, A Point Well Taken, More

Concert and Events Notes

  • My What A Big Bass You Have!! And that big bass belongs to Lee Rocker, founder of the Stray Cats! Lee and his rockabilly band are the featured act at the Austinpalooza to benefit Austin’s House this Saturday in TJ's Corral and all ticket sales go directly to Austin's House. Buy your tickets on line in advance or at the gate and catch five bands with in-and-out convenience from 2 to 10 p.m.
  • What about the High-Flying Motorcycle Acrobatics you'll see during our 30th Birthday Celebration on Sunday, August 24? The video above shows a similar event in Las Vegas and we know this will whet your appetite for the Free event in our parking lot. Also on tap a week from Sunday: Free entertainment with the Blues Monsters in TJ's Corral plus free games for the kids and more.
  • The Charlie Daniels Band Concert on Friday, August 29 is totally Sold Out – Thank You for making this concert a big success so far in advance!

Hey, It's Me on the Sign!  Donna was playing "my machine" (one of our Quick Hit Platinum Slots in her case) when the bells and whistles started going off.  She knew she had won something and thought she had 8 "Quick Picks" which would have been about a $3,000 payout. Even thought the Jackpot light was flashing she still counted the Quick Picks three times and came up with 9 each time – just what it took to trigger the top jackpot of $13,647. Donna told us she had won a few $1,000 jackpots before on the Quick Hit Platinum and had been joking to friends about hitting the Big Jackpot. Well, she did! Per Donna, "I am extremely excited that when I was driving through the Valley it was MY name that was up on the big sign!"

Getting to the Point! Points – seems every casino talks about the benefits of earning points. We have an impressive list of ways you can redeem your points here at the Carson Valley Inn: free play; dining in CV Steak, Katie's or Job's Perk; accommodations in our hotel, motor lodge or RV park; gas, diesel or merchandise at the Carson Valley Market; cakes and pies at the Katie's Bakery Counter . . . and more.

But here's another point of view on earning points at the CVI: There are many benefits you can realize without actually using or redeeming your points.  In other words, you get the benefits and You Keep the Points! There are dozens of examples over the last few months – here are just a few:
  • Every one of our concerts (Valley Ballroom and TJ's Corral) has seats reserved for INN Club players who receive invitations based on recent points earned. No points are "charged" for these concert tickets.
  • A variety of special buffets are held each year for INN Club players who received invitations based on recent points earned. No points are "charged" for these feasts.
  • Themed parties (Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, etc) are held each year for INN Club players who receive invitations based on recent points earned. No points are "charged" for these feasts.
  • Just about every month we have one or more days when we giveaway tee shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, hats or something - just for earning a minimum number of points that day. You get the item and You Keep the Points!
  • Many of our promotions have giveaway drawings each week and you accumulate drawing entries based on points earned . . . but no points are "charged" for these giveaways.
  • A monthly mailer is sent to INN Club members based on recent points earned. These mailers have a variety of offers such as food credits, overnight stays, free play and more . . . and all of these offers can be redeemed with no points "charged!"
Are we suggesting you play in the casino more? No - we always encourage our guests to enjoy gaming as entertainment within your comfort level and your means. We are suggesting that whenever you play at the CVI (table games, slots and poker room) you always use your INN Club Card. The point is – your points do add up to so much more at the Carson Valley Inn.

Free Entertainment in the Cabaret: Popular soloist Steve Lord appears tonight and is then joined by some of his favorite musician friends for a special treat on Thursday. The John Dawson Band takes over the stage on Friday and Saturday – these five fun-lovin' guys entertain with a variety of modern country and classic rock. Dale Poune is in on Sunday night and Johnny Smokes entertains Monday through Wednesday. If you Johnny last time you already know this is an act well worth seeing. While carrying the label of "One Man Band," this moniker fails miserably to even begin to define the high tech and energetic live experience of a Johnny Smokes show.

As Always, Interesting, Helpful and Occasionally Even Useful Tidbits and News:
